I sent this a little earlier today: Oliver, I have Windows 7, so hopefully this
will apply to your OS. Go to the lower right of your screen. If you have the
standard configuration, there will be a system tray. Left click on the "up
arrow" to bring up the hidden icons. Right click on the Norton Icon, which is a
yellow check mark with a green one within. Click on "Disable Auto Protect". It
will give you a protection warning pop-up, and lets you select the duration of
disabling the Auto Protect. 15 minutes is generally enough time. Download the
file, and install as usual. Norton is a bit aggressive these days. '73 de JIM

Re: [Elecraft] Tracking Upgrades with the K3 Utility?

2016-09-23 Thread Bruce Beford
Unfortunately Bob, It's not feasible to have the K3 utility track and report
all of the possible mods that may have been made to an earlier K3. Some of
them involved simple component changes or additions that would not be
visible to any firmware or software.

To keep track of this on my early K3, s/n 559, I printed out the mod
instructions or the option install instructions and noted the rig s/n and
the date it was installed or the mod performed. I have these going back to
2008 of all the updates I have done on this rig. I know it is a bit late for
that for you, but. You could download all the updates that have come out
since your rig was produced, and do the same- just note the date that each
update was verified as done.

Just a thought.

Re: [Elecraft] DSP/Audio upgrade for K3

The FAQ for the K3s indicated that these K3S DSP boards "May be available
later in 2016..." for use as a retrofit to the K3. I think key word there
being "may". I would expect that once production needs are fully met and
excess becomes available they will be offered as an upgrade for the K3. I
also expect it will be fairly expensive, as this is not just a simple update
to the original K3 DSP board as the older upgrade was.

this newer board would be made available to K3 owners as an upgrade."

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 musings

2015-04-10 Thread Bruce Beford
Interesting wish list for a fantasy KX2, Jay.

But- I don't believe there is any way they could add all those additional
bands (with the filtering components required), plus higher output power on
internal batteries, plus an extended range auto-tuner and still fit within
the same size box. Elecraft has some great design folks, but... you'd have
to give on that size requirement to stand a chance of ever seeing the
others. If you admit it would take a larger box, then you are close enough
to the KX3 to not make it worth the development costs.

I think so... (a dream). I have a K1 now, and have had a few of them in the

remember the VFO calibration for all the bands, across the boards you have.
The only time this is an issue is if you have two different modules with the
same band, like 40/30/20/15 on a 4 band board, and 40/17 on a 2 band board.

I'm not sure how you want this measured, so here's a couple of measurements

Using the PX3CBL cable kit that comes with the PX3, the maximum separation
between the two units is about 8 inches.(from the right of the PX3 to the
left of the KX3)
Measured from the outside edges (that is, with the PX3 on the left of the
KX3), the maximum distance between the left edge of the PX3 and the right
edge of the KX3 is 21.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you would like different dimensions

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Feature Request?

2014-12-09 Thread Bruce Beford
Fairly obvious that an external sensor will be needed, probably the same (or
similar) sensors to what is used for the W2 wattmeter. Also, since there is
no current corresponding input on the P3, an option board will be required
for that. (Strictly speculation on my part, but fairly obvious to me)
Availability and pricing TBD.
73,
Bruce N1RX

Obviously, the sensor would have to be purchased.
I do not know whether additional P3 option boards will be necessary or
not.

[Elecraft] FW: P3 Feature Request?

2014-12-09 Thread Bruce Beford
No. Obviously. There is no TX output path sampling built into the P3. This
can be seen by studying the manual. There has always been however, a large
empty hole in the back of the P3 labeled sensor. Therefore (obviously)
space left for a future sensor.

It only does this when you try to transmit beyond the band edge. I believe
what Alan (an others) have asked for, is a beep when tuning the VFO beyond a
band edge, while receiving.

This has been discussed many times in the past. Some people want it for
their particular country's band plan, other for their particular license

In addition to the other suggestions you have received (assuming still no

Early on, I had the same problem after installing a 250 Hz filter. the
problem ended up being a coupling cap on the circuit board with no solder on
one end. I was able to find it, and touch it up myself. Mine was a fairly
early unit (s/n 559).

[Elecraft] Possible solution: K1 with a strange XFIL problem...

2014-09-22 Thread Bruce Beford
Yes I had this exact problem on one I repaired in July of 2012. It was
traced to a short between the RIT/XIT switche to a trace on the board, where
the switch lead had been bent over by the original builder before soldering.

I corresponded with Don Wilhelm about this. Though he didn't provide the
solution, our conversation led me to the tests that found it. Copied below
is a repost of my last message to Don, after I resolved it. I don't recall
if I posted this to the reflector or not. In any event, It may help someone
in the future. I have a photo of the offending switch pin connection, if
anyone wants it.
Bruce Beford, N1RX

Hi, Don.
You may recall that I posted recently to the list about a strange problem
with a K1. I resolved it today, and wanted to share the results with you.
Here's a copy of my original post:

OK, folks.
Time to put on your thinking caps...
I just purchased a used K1. Has NB, ATU and 4 band board, set for
7/10.1/14/21 MHz. All appears to be operating normally, except...
When cycling through the crystal filter bandwidths from FL1-FL3, once FL3 is
reached, all buttons become unresponsive. The VFO readout still works, but
the MCU will not respond to any key presses. The filter does actually switch
to the narrowest setting, based on the audio response. Cycling the power
returns the rig to normal operation (on FL1), and all works fine again until
trying to use FL3.

About the only other anomaly I notice is what seems to be a louder pop in
the speaker when switching in RIT or XIT than I remember from my last K1. I
have not yet begun any troubleshooting (except for a full reset). Just
thought I would poll the collective wisdom here before digging in. Actually,
I'll be getting ready for Lobstercon over the next couple of days, so I
don't know how much time I'll be able to commit until after the weekend.

You and I both suspected a problem with the MCU, as there should no other
circuitry involved, except the DAC and EEPROM. You also suggested perhaps
replacing those ICs while in there.

Fortunately, I have a friend who allowed me to borrow his working K1.
Swapped the entire Front Panel board, mine works fine with his board. I then
took his MCU chip and put it in my board, still have the problem. So, the
problem was on my FP board, but not the MCU.

One thing I did notice was a ticking noise in the audio with no antenna
connected, almost like ignition noise in a vehicle, when using my board FP
board but not when using my friend's. The ticking would disappear when I
went to FL2. Ahh, another clue...

I then decided to remove the DAC from my board and see what happens. Lo, The
unit would now switch properly, FL3,FL2,FL1 and back to FL3 OK. Of course,
it was not actually switching the filter bandwidth with the DAC out. I now
had a pretty load, almost moterboating noise in the audio.

I decided to ground what was the XFIL/TONE output pin of the DAC (pin 1) to
see if it would quiet the audio. It did, BUT- it activated the RIT! Wait a
minute- there should be no connection between the two but, there was.
Upon extra careful inspection, I found that one lead on the RIT/XIT switch
was not inserted through the board by the original builder. It was bent
over, and was contacting pin 5 on J1 (the XFIL/TONE signal). The
moaterboating I heard was actually the MCU driving the LCD pin and polling
the input for the switch. This was not noticeable when the DAC was holding
this line at a steady DC voltage.

So, what was happening was when the DAC output it's lowest voltage for FL1
(about 1.6 volts), it would tickle the input pin on the MCU for the
WPM+/FILTER switch. I believe the MCU would think the switch was being held
in, therefore no other switches would work, until the unit was powered off.
An original symptom (which I didn't recognize at the time) was when I noted
that the RIT/XIT button seemed to generate an audio pop when used. That's
because it was grounding the XFIL/TONE signal line.

I reworked the switch connection, and all is fine now. I have attached a
photo of the offending pin (not a good shot, but shows the connection in
question). I thought you might like to hear about this one.

Thanks for being a sounding board, Don. I appreciate it.
73,
Bruce, N1RX

Has anyone on this list used a P3 panadapter with the K2 transceiver? Is

 Thanks, Tom KG7CFC

It is not directly plug compatible, as there is no IF output port on a
stock K2. Even with a modified K2, the P3 cannot achieve the same level of
integration that it has with the K3. To study up on a couple of different
ways to accomplish an IF output on the K2, you can read up here:

Re: [Elecraft] OT KX3 - Yahoo Group

2014-07-30 Thread Bruce Beford
Sadly, The KX3 Yahoo group has taken a very bad turn. It was originally
started, when the KX3 was initially announced, by a very responsible group
owner who had a very lenient moderation policy. Unfortunately, he has turned
the day-to-day operation over to two other moderators that prefer to remain
anonymous. They have instituted a Draconian zero-tolerance policy of any
mention of either commercial products, or links to any other resource pages.
They claim to want all KX3 related material to be copied to the Yahoo Group,
rather than links to other sites. This is unworkable, as only those who
actually own the information can post it there. It also make maintenance of
updates unworkable. For instance, I posted a link to a website that was
still maintaining an archive copy of NaP3 software (N8LP), after development
of NaP3 ceased. For this, I was placed on moderation (unannounced and
unexplained).

Unfortunately, the implementation of these new policies has resulted in the
banishment of many, often without explanation. Sad to say, this once very
useful Group is now much less so.

Bruce/N1RX

From the Elecraft email reflector:

Just thought I would pass along my recent experience on the KX3 Yahoo
Group.
Yesterday I received a heatsink from KB8UHN. I posted on the KX3 Yahoo
Group that I received a heatsink from KB8UHN and it was a quality product
and about half the price of other heatsinks.

About an hour later I get an email from the moderator telling me I'm
banned
from group for promoting products. I replied Sorry did not know your
rules, you would think a warning? He did not respond to my query.

Johnny Siu VR2XMC told me he has been banned from posting on the group for
agreeing with my post about the heatsink.

So be careful on the KX3 Yahoo Group. Somehow I will suffer through this
 traumatic banning.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] UPS for K3

2014-07-21 Thread Bruce Beford
Is it overkill to power my Astron RS-35 power supply that runs my K3 from
 a UPS?

In my opinion, yes- it's overkill. I personally would probably use the
Astron to float a deep cycle or SLA battery on it's output. You might also
want to investigate adding a PWRgate or similar Schottky diode matrix to the
mix. This would provide not only the protection against abrupt power failure
that you seem to seek, but also provide some additional operating time in
the event of power fail. Those UPS units are designed to run for only a
handful of minutes, while a computer system shuts down.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 4 band version gone? (Hand SMT---Never)

2014-07-20 Thread Bruce Beford
While I understand this mindset; I for one, am grateful that there are
SMT-based kits available. I enjoy building both thru-hole and SMT based
projects. In many cases, thru hole equivalents are not available for some
components. I have built many all-SMT projects, notably those offered by
KD1JV,ad formerly NJQRP (now Midnight Design Solutions), among others.

No, they are not for everyone. But- I am glad they are offered for those of
us who can and do enjoy building them. It is not nearly as difficult as some
seem to believe it to be. Different techniques are required, that's all. In
many cases, a much more compact package, or an otherwise impossible project
is the result.

Bruce/N1RX

I have to agree with Mike, especially with the assertion about SMT
components being intended for robotic assembly.

Imagine all of the troubleshooting calls and e-mails that Elecraft would
get if Joe Ham had to populate circuit boards with these miniature
components. Too much room for error.

While I'd prefer a through-hole kit where soldering was required
(although I hate winding toroids!), like the K1 and K2, if the KX3 had
even one SMT device, I would not have purchased one.

2014-07-17 Thread Bruce Beford
Thanks for taking the time to reply with the details, Wayne. It's a shame. I
(and many others) feel the K1 has some advantages over the KX1, such as the
analog VFO, higher output power, and 4-pole filtering. It's internal antenna
matching unit also offers more tuning range than the KX1. I have also built
a 160m/80m 2 band board for mine.

I have built and own all the Elecraft rigs, and each has provided great
enjoyment, each has it's strong points.

Time marches own, it would be wonderful if a 4-band redesign solution could
be found, using modern components. Perhaps a pre-built, pre-tuned SMD based
board. But, I imagine the potential sales volume would not justify the
costs. Too bad.

Hi Bruce,

The 4-band module requires extremely low-temperature-coefficient trimmer
capacitors because of its narrow-band pre-mix and RF band-pass filters. The
last source for these exotic trimmers dried up recently. A redesign using
higher-TC trimmers might be possible, but the filters would end up being
triple-tuned, which would force the use of SMD components throughout, and
tuning the filters would then be very difficult without a spectrum analyzer.

Sales volume for the K1 has decreased in recent years due to the KX1 (which
is smaller and has a DDS VFO), and the KX3 (which covers all bands, all
modes, with up to 12 W output and has a much more capable auto tuner, nicer
user interface, etc.). So the cost of a redesign wouldn't be recovered.

That said, for the time being we're continuing to offer the two-band version
and the other options (KAT1 ATU, KBT1 battery pack, etc.). The K1 is one of
our full kits, and has a bit of a fan club of its own.

We'll update the website to reflect the change in option availability.

[Elecraft] K3: Repair Broken Power Pole

2014-05-31 Thread Bruce Beford

The two screws in the middle of the right side panel hold the low voltage

The plastic housing of the black power pole that is captive to the radio

the right side panel off, removing all the perimeter screws, but there
are two in the middle of the side panel, and six years after building
these radios, I don't remember what I can remove without having a
problem. This radio is my spare, minimal stuff in it. K3/100, no tuner,
no 2nd RX.

Suggestions?

[Elecraft] [OT] Elecraft's Linux utilities - somewhat OT, or maybe not

2014-05-27 Thread Bruce Beford
I don't believe people load Linux just so they can spend time getting a
computer to run Elecraft utilities. The use of Linux appears to be more of a
philosophical endeavor than a strictly performance one. It's not too often that
I hear someone say that they run Linux because they can't get a similar app on
Windows.

Windows runs on around 90% of the worlds desktops and laptops. OSX something
less than 9%, Linux (all distros) less than 2%. One of the reason for Window's
dominance is the (generally) simplified user experience, coupled with the broad
software/comparable hardware availability. The two sides feed on and promote
each other. i.e. a larger installed base of OS users makes for an attractive
market for software/hardware creators. Of course, it also makes it a fertile
hunting ground for malware creators, too...

including control of all the parts of my K-Line. Download, install, and

It took me over an hour to get a simple WiFi printer operating on Linux
Mint 17 this afternoon (driver issues). Took me less than five minutes
on the Win 8.1 machine. I use a network for my printers and all the
computers share the same printers - Windows and Linux.

Having said all that, I cannot imagine spending a bunch of time getting
Linux up and running with the K-Line software much less having faith in
its ability to correctly operate/update the K-Line.

I am not trolling, I really would like an honest answer as to why Linux

Re: [Elecraft] Activity in ancient 15-meter novice band (21.1 MHz)

2014-05-25 Thread Bruce Beford
Yes, 15M was also my favorite band as a Novice.

It may be ancient but it's still active, and still an official band
segment for Novice/Techs (21.025-21.200 MHz). The same goes for the
Novice/Tech segment of 40M (7.025-7.125). There is a lot of activity at the
top end of the old Novice segment of 40M. You can often find relatively slow
code CW QSOs from 7.120-7.125.

Stop in and work these stations! There are many who frequent these segments.
I know many FISTS and SKCC members who hang out in these areas. Some other
folks are working on getting their code speed up. Not because they _have
to_, but because they want to. I know a few lifetime Novices, that are
active, but have no intention of upgrading.

Yes, there are still Novice class licensees. The FCC does not issue new
Novice (or Advanced) class licenses, but they can still be (and often are)
renewed.

Latest statistics from the FCC:

Total

Thanks to the PX3 panadapter and the CQ WW CW contest, I just made my first
QSO in at least three decades in the legacy 21.1 MHz U.S. Novice-license
segment. I didn't expect activity to spread upward that far, but sure
enough, blips appeared on the PX3 above 21.1, and I was able to make a quick
QSO with WK1Q using 12 W (KX3 barefoot).

This brought back a lot of memories. 21.1-21.15 was my favorite place to
hang out back in the 1970s, when I was crystal-controlled on transmit, using
a Heath HW-16. In those days I had a home-rolled 2-element 15-meter yogi
made from 1/2-inch steel pipe and 2x4s. Must have weighed 40 pounds.
Fortunately, my patient stepfather knew that getting that antenna up would
keep me out of trouble (I was 15 at the time).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 issues - new modules installed - 250 Hz filter, DVK, KXV3A

2014-05-23 Thread Bruce Beford
Hi, Mark.
Most of these error messages relate to the second RX. I assume you have the
second receiver, and had to remove it, in order to install the 250 filter in
the main receiver. If that is the case, you may not have gotten the 2nd RX
module properly reseated on the main board.

Another error you report, TXF, relates to the transmit filter selected for
the particular mode. Did you use the K3 utility to confirm and reconfigure
your filter settings after installing the new options? Also, did you
activate the new options in the menus, and then power cycle the radio?

All the error messages are listed in the back section of the K3 manual. I am
sure with some re-inspection, reseating, and configuration verification with
the K3 utility, you will be able to get it right.

Good luck,

[Elecraft] K2 led backlight assmbly

2014-05-21 Thread Bruce Beford
Some time ago, I had a K1 that needed a repair, including the backlight.
Instead of ordering a part from Elecraft, I was able to use two sub-mini
yellow LEDs that I had, and positioned them so they illuminated the edge of
the original diffuser. The same technique could be applied to the K2.

I have since sold that K1 along. So... If you ever see a K1 with an amber
backlight instead of the standard green, that's probably the one I modified.

When you switch bands on the K3, is Band Data available to the user ?
Is that data written down anywhere, that I can get to ?

Reason I ask, is I want to investigate building an interface between the K3
and the SPE 1.3K-FA Amp to facilitate automatic bandswitching on the Amp.

Is there something that I'm doing wrong to not be able to copy them on CW?

More info might help, Jim.
Band, Freq, filter width settings? For example: Is it possible you are
hearing CW at a relatively high pitch while in SSB, and when you switch to
CW, it is just outside the (narrower) filter width?

Around hear, you mostly here CW with SSB at the lower end of 40M. There is
an age old Canadian SSB net that meets right about 7.055, where there is
also a lot of CW activity...

Re: [Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?

2014-05-10 Thread Bruce Beford
Jim,
The KX3's internal tuner will not do anything while you are using the
KXPA100. The tuner is bypassed when the amp is in use. For an antenna
tuner to do it's job, it must be positioned between the final amplifier
and the antenna feedline. Or, (even better) at the feed point of the antenna
itself. Therefore, the internal tuner of the KX3 is only in use when running
the KX3 barefoot.

As to the amp or the panadapter, unless Jim is an

Since the PX3 is not shipping until July (I've

Re: [Elecraft] Making a Signalink cable for the K3's 8-pin mic

2014-05-10 Thread Bruce Beford
With all due respect, you already received the answer here. Yes, you can
connect the Signal Link to the front panel mic connector. Just pad the audio
output of the SL to a mic level, instead of line level. Also, you won't be
able to get audio output from the K3 back to the SignalLink via that jack.
The RX audio of the K3 is not available there (see the manual). So you would
need another cable from line out on the back for that anyway.

So... it would be easist to just patch it in via the back (via your rack of
signal shaping/mixing gear), as has been suggested.

I knew this was going to turn into why do you need all that audio gear

[Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle?

2014-05-04 Thread Bruce Beford
From what I have read thus far, VHF is still the best bet for this
application. I have not yet heard how far these riders are spread out. If a
5W HT doesn't cut it, then perhaps adding a 30-50W amp would be more
appropriate than going HF. Also, look at the antennas in use on the bikes,
and their placement and adjustment. That means everyone on the ride needs to
understand how to properly install and operate the equipment, and it's
limitations. The bike with the lowest gain antenna/lowest power  would seem
to dictate the effectiveness of what it sounds like you are trying to do.

I still don't think outfitting 'x' number of bikes with HF is the answer.
But, I've been wrong before. It's an interesting problem.

good luck,

You don't need to be a EE to figure this out. All (S)VGA cable are
straight-thru, in the sense that none of the pins are cross connected.
However, a standard (S)VGA cable does not have all 15 wires connected from
one end to the other, and often the ground pins are wired together.

A simple Google or Bing search of SVGA pinout will show you what I mean.

Agreed, BUT- You do NOT want DB15 connectors. These cables use HD15
connectors, not DB15. DB15 has two rows of pins. HD15 (high density) has 3
rows.

And VGA or SVGA should be removed from the discussion -- they
describe a computer video data interchange format that needs fewer than
15 conductors, but uses DB15 connectors as a standard to differentiate
 it from other computer cables.

Hi Bruce. I was looking at the PX3 case today. It's not very deep and the
current P3 won't fit in there. And Eric did confirm that.

Some people have cut the stock P3 sides, top and bottom shorter to achieve a
similar profile.

In many cases, it would be nice to have the P3 in a case footprint similar
to the PX3. Perhaps with the sheet metal design work already done for the
PX3, this would not be cost prohibitive. Possible?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 mini ?

2014-02-23 Thread Bruce Beford
And now might be a good time to remind folks that the K3/0 mini is not a
radio by itself... It is a control panel, for a real K3, just like the now
available full-sized K3/0. It is to be used to control a remote K3.

Bruce, N1RX

 Alan,
The K3 mini prototype was at Dayton last year too. It has the same
front panel as the K3, but is not nearly as deep as the K3/0.

I seem to recall this was reported some time ago. IIRC, for that particular
op, it ended up being slightly loosened hardware on the main heat sink assy.
I would check all hardware (internally and externally) and see if anything
has loosened up, through thermal cycling.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote P3

2014-01-20 Thread Bruce Beford
Unlikely. I don't know how practical it would be, even if you _did_ use a
computer at the remote end. Some folks set up a webcam to view the P3
display, I believe. This would be very bandwidth intensive, to get anything
approaching a real-time rate and good resolution. Controlling the P3 would
be another matter entirely.

Bruce N1RX

Then the question morphs into the following: If setting up a remote
K-line without a computer at the remote end, is there any way to control a
 P3 and view its output?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Power Plug

2014-01-19 Thread Bruce Beford
Dan,
One place in the manual that the size of this plug/jack is mentioned is on
pages 3, 5, and 7 which give the description of the connections to the
device. Referencing figure 1, item 2 is given as Two wire power cable with
a female 2.1 mm coaxial connector (supplied). This is the same 2.1mm
ID/5.5mm OD coaxial power connectors used on most Elecraft equipment.

73,
Bruce N1RX

Thanks, Don. Several different coaxial plugs fit the jack, but wanted
to make sure my friend purchased the correct size. Unless I am blind, I
could not find this kind of information in the manual. An oversight, I
 guess.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 transverter offset

2014-01-14 Thread Bruce Beford
David-
The latest list of unimplemented features can generally be found in the
errata for the latest version of the manual. This can be downloaded from the
Elecraft website, in the manuals and downloads section. Unfortunately, the
transverter offset is not currently listed in the latest errata (it should
be). This particular missing parameter was discussed as recently as last
September-October on the KX3 Yahoo Group.

Of course, the latest features are released in beta versions of the
firmware, and then later in the full production releases. Whether you choose
to run beta firmware is entirely up you, based on your needs. I have always
installed the latest betas, and have never been sorry...

As has been said earlier, I am sure this will be corrected soon, as
development of the internal transverter is proceeding apace, and more people
have been using the KX3 with external transverters. This should help move
this issue higher up the firmware priority list.

It will get implemented, have no fear.

Bruce, N1RX

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power cal

2014-01-12 Thread Bruce Beford
Not enough info.
Are you running an audio based mode? i.e. JT65? If so, then it is very
likely that you are not setting the audio levels properly to drive the
K3(s). If the audio level is not set properly, the K3 will try to increase
system gain to reach the desired output, resulting in the symptom you
report.

Bruce, N1RX

I have 2 K3's and both have this same problem .
In transverter mode the drive for a downeast 2 meter transverter
That I use for EME,  The power comes up slow.
I also have a HomeBrew 630 meter transverter the same problem.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Full SDR

2013-12-31 Thread Bruce Beford
Many people seem to be either forgetting, or missing the point of Leif's
article (referenced below). The entire thrust was in the context of using an
HF transceiver as an IF rig with VHF/UHF/SHF transverters. Band noise on
those higher freqs is low enough that transmitted phase noise can be an
issue. This is especially true when running high power.

His summation was that the Flex-1500 is marketed as being perfect for
driving microwave transverters. His article outlines why this may not be
true. The FLEX SDR radios are not as objectionable on the HF bands, where
atmospheric and other noise dominates.

Bruce, N1RX

Based upon the published test results I've seen, if
everyone used FLEX SDR rigs nobody would enjoy SDR rigs ... or any
other rigs for that matter. Check out
 http://www.sm5bsz.com/dynrange/dubus313.pdf for the details.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Full SDR

2013-12-31 Thread Bruce Beford
For those, the noise from a Flex at 100w, at -77 dBc (which is -27
dBm), can be quite substantial. Recall that S9 is approx -72 dBm. A
Flex is transmitting wideband S9+45 noise.

OK, I'm not a Flex user. But, I don't agree with your math. I am not trying
to defend the transmitted phase noise performance of the Flex products,
but... Your math is flawed.

Assume 100w transmitter is delivering +50 dBm to an antenna. (100W is 50 dB
greater than 1 milliwatt) Also assume you are at a receiving station, and
hearing this station at S9+30 dB, on a receiver calibrated to 6dB/S unit,
S9=50uV at 50 Ohms, or -73dBm for S9. Your receiving the fundamental signal
at -43dBm (S9+30dB). With the transmitted phase noise 77dBbelow the carrier,
it would be received at -120dBm, or about S2.

Granted, it would be 10 dB stronger (abt S3.5), if you were receiving the
fundamental transmission at S9+40dB, etc. But... the Flex is not
transmitting wideband S9+45 noise.

Let's not blow this out of proportion.
