Re: [Elecraft] KXV3 RXA board vs KXV3A

2010-02-09 Thread Stan Rife
The RXA mod had nothing to do with the transverters. It increased the isoation
of the receive antenna on the KXV3 board.

Jeff, you need to get the KXV3A, and there is an upgrade purchase price that
gives you a break and you have to send your old KXV3 back to Elecraft.

Jeff,

I am not certain what you are referring to as a KXV3 with the KXV3 RXA
board.  If you are referring to the RX Antenna, I believe that always
has been a part of the KXV3.  If there was a different KXV3 RXA version,
would someone please inform me.
Yes, the KXV3A is required to install the K144XV - the A version has
the switching for the K144XV, and the non-A version does not.  I would
say you need to order the KXV3_UPGR so you can be prepared when your
K144XV arrives.

Thanks for the help guys, but the resolution you suggested is not what I used.
I was putzing around with it after I sent the email and happened to push hold
the VOX button and that seemed to reset something...I don't know exactly what
happened. Maybe turning the VOX on off unlinked the VFOs somehow.

I think some strange commands got sent over the serial link while I was using
K3BSR. Can't say for sure but I don't recall ever pushing the SUB button until
I noticed the problem. I did turn the SUB on off a couple of times but the
VFOs still appeared to be linked.

It seems to be ok now, so all is well that ends well.

OTOH, I think my Al-1200 is very well built. Ameritron isn't really MFJ.
A few years ago, I requested that my name be put on the KPA800 waiting list.
I hope it's still there. It's gonna be a great DXpedition partner for

Re: [Elecraft] Split while using Diversity

I've been trying to decide whether or not to ask this question, because I
didn't want to appear too dumb. What exactly is the advantage of diversity
receive? Is it for weak signal work specifically? Can someone give me a quick
run down on  this? I've never had a rig that would do this before, so I am not
familiar with the concept.

I admit to not keeping up with the K3 feature list and manual. Go ahead and

That's it. I just tried it. I wasn't holding the SUB button long
enough.
When it displays DIVRSTY, VFO B tracks VFO A as before. But when you
activate SPLIT, you can tune VFO B to a different transmit frequency but
both receivers are still tuned to the original frequency. When you turn off
SPLIT, the VFO B display returns to the original frequency. Thanks for the
clarification.

To
activate SPLIT, the only way to actually change my transmit frequency
is
to turn the VFO B dial thus loosing my diversity.

Using the A/B button allows me to listen to the original frequency on
either receiver but not both. And transmission will occur on VFO B
requiring me to swap back before transmitting again. That's a
problem.

The only way I see this working is to use XIT instead of split. I'm
just
not a fan of XIT. So am I missing something?

73,
Mike K2MK

That's basically how I operated this past weekend. But I think I
realized
that I was missing something. Those in the know can correct me. It has
to do with the blinking second decimal point, which confused me. At
times, I saw A blink, B blink, and A and B blink. I believe that there
are two methods to achieve diversity. First is the way that Mike
described and that I generally did over the weekend. You enable the SUB
by pressing SUB. You press RX ANT to get AUX. Then you tap AB twice
to
get both the receivers to be the same frequency and filter settings. Then

you press and hold SUB for a second to link. In this case, I believe the
second decimal in VFO B will blink, indicating LINK. However, there is
another method for achieving diversity. If you press and hold SUB for two

seconds, first you will see LINK and then DIVRSTY. I believe in this
case, the second decimal in VFO A will blink and the settings indicated on

VFO A will control both receivers and set the sub antenna to AUX. This
allows you to use VFO B for SPLIT or a temp register. Is this
 interpretation correct???

That's ok...it's good to check to see if I am nuts or not. hi hi

Yes, listening to SSB on 20m this evening and actually there is not
much noise on the band, for a change. Listening to several QSOs and
turning the NR on causes a drop in audio...but then again, it always
has. I haven't tried it on CW.

Hate to ask the stupid question but do you have a signal in the passband
when you activate it? If so are you using it on a CW or SSB signal when
you notice this level reduction?

My AF is on high range and running at 9 O'clock position.

The NR audio level seems much improved and balanced between engaged
and not engaged, perhaps even a little too loud with NR engaged. I
 like it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 V2.20/1..88

2008-07-24 Thread Stan Rife
Yes I did. I wound up with SLP set to 8 and Threshold at 5. I just
changed the threshold setting to 6 and I think it made some difference.
The audio with NR on is considerably louder than with previous versions
of the firmware. I can really tell a difference on CW. So I think I'm ok.

I had an adjacent signal just below where I was listening and with
the threshold set to 5 it may have been causing a little more pumping
that was causing the AGC to reduce the audio a little. Actually I'm not
sure if the lower setting of the threshold creates a stronger AGC action
or not. Listening to some different signals around the band revealed
that I do have a little more audio with the NR on than I did with past
versions of the firmware.

Everything went hunkydory.

Set the SLP at 8 and Threshold at 6 and works great! The NR button works
differently now The weak signal pops up out of the noise (the noise is
abated) and I can copy the station. I am listen on 40 CW. Adjusting the Noise
Reduction parameters even help farther.

There is not reduction of audiobut the signal just pops out.

Great job for Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Autoinfo 1

I set Autoinfo to Auto1 and it did not seem to cause the K3 to send
out RS-232 data without being polled. My impression is that this is what
this option was supposed to do. I may be out in left field on this, and
if so someone bring me in out of the rain please. :-)

I am trying to get the K3 to send data out for the SteppIR antenna
to read without having HRD running. There are times when I would like to
just peruse the bands without wanting the software running, but have the
SteppIR track the frequency. Has anyone done this successfully?

Seems logical to me. If you are using ALC to control your amp drive it might be
beneficial to see the rig's ALC action on CW. I suspect without an amp ALC line

My four dual function knobs move from side to side a bit and I suppose they
could be described as gritty when turned. I hadn't considered it a problem.
They do the job.

I did have a faulty internal shield and a faceplate for the KIO module that
was stencilled on the wrong side. Elecraft sent replacements which arrived
in about a week. Fortunately neither of these were show stoppers. I agree
it's frustrating, but mistakes happen. I still would rather have had the
experience of assembling the K3 than avoid these minor issues by having it
ready built.

[Elecraft] K3 Front panel rattling washer

2008-04-29 Thread Stan Rife
I also have the rattling washer on the headphone jack. I have been
working with tech support taking measurements and checking different
things. No joy so far. Everything checks out as far as the assembly goes. I
just seem to have about .050 more clearance between the shoulder of the
headphone jack and the FP sheet metal than is normal, and the washer
rattles. I think that .050 causes the FP/DSP assembly to be a little
more difficult to get the bottom screws in when installing it on the
radio than if everything were fitted properly on the FP assembly. I have to
press pretty firmly on the bottom of the FP assembly to get the bottom
screws started in the 2D fasteners.

I think one possible fix would be to use .050 shorter standoffs
between the DSP board and the FP board. That would cause the shoulder of
the headphone jack to be close enough to the FP sheet metal to keep the
washer from rattling, and would also allow the connectors on the FP
assembly to not seat quite as far down on to the mating pins of the
connectors on the RF board, therefore allowing the screws for the front panel
 mounting to line up easier.

I belive that, at least in my case, the mating connectors for the FP
and RF board are bottoming out and not allowing the sheet metal to move
far enough back to line up properly, thereby causing me to have to
apply more pressue to get the screw holes lined up.

One caution here, is that when the clearance between the DSP and the
FP boards is reduced by .050, it MAY cause contact between the front
of the DSP board and the back of the FP board. The clearance looks
pretty minimal in some places as it is.

I may try this as a LAST resort, but I am going to continue to work
with K3 support to try and find the real cause of this. I may send my
front panel back and let Gary look at it so he can figure this thing
 out.

whistle, the lower the whistle from the monitor audio, and of course the lower
I whistle the higher it is in frequency from the monitor audio. It's
disconcerting to say the least and leads me to believe there is something not
right.

#2, I cannot get the VOX to work. With the VOX gain set as low as 1 or 2, any
amount of mic gain causes it to go in to transmit and will not unkey until I
turn the mic gain down completely (3 or so). I can turn the mic gain completely
down, as well as the compression, put it in VOX mode, turn the mic gain up to 2
or 3 and it keys right away. this is with the VOX gain set at about 2 or 3 as
well.

I pulled the front panel off and checked for bent pins, as Gary suggested.
Did not find anything wrong.

  Anyone have any idea??

Re: [Elecraft] Question for Optivisor users

2008-03-07 Thread Stan Rife
I think mine came with a #2 lens Mike. Focal distance is around 8 and still
gives good magnification. I find it very comfortable as far as the distance and
power. I thought I might try one that would get me a little farther away, but I
am happy with the present lense so it hasn't been something that I thought I

[Elecraft] KRX3 option question

2008-03-06 Thread Stan Rife
  This from the K3 manual:

The sub receiver also has the same filter options as
the main receiver. Up to five crystal filters can be
installed in the sub receiver, as well as a generalcoverage
  L-C band-pass filter module (KBPF3, pg.
42). The sub also includes an I.F. noise blanker.
There are three main modules associated with the
KRX3 option: the sub receiver itself; a KSYN3
synthesizer; and a second I.F. DSP. All three must
be installed and enabled before the sub receiver can
be used. For information on installing and
configuring the sub receiver, refer to the KRX3
  option installation manual.

If I am interpreting this correctly, in addition to the KRX3, I have to have
a second KSYN3 board and a second I.F. DSP. I don't see these as purchase-able
options on the order page. Also, it appears that I would have to have an
additional KBPF3 if I want the sub receiver to be general coverage...that is,
in addition to having the main receiver as general coverage to begin with. I
don't see having both receivers with general coverage capability. That seems a
bit too redundant, and expensive. I will more than likely just have the sub as
the general coverage receiver.

Does the cost of the KRX3 include the second KSYN3 second IF DSP?

[Elecraft] K2 headset jack

2008-01-22 Thread Stan Rife
I plugged in my headset and used it the other day. When I unplugged
it I had no audio from the external speaker jack, which is what I am using
with an external speaker. Even when I unplugged the external speaker I still
have no audio. The only way I can get audio now is the plug something in to
the headset jack.

What happens to these headset jacks? Is there a contact breaking off
in there? It was never intermittent and always worked fine up until this
incident. I'll have to replace it I am sure, I am just curious because I
know several people have had trouble with this jack. It seems the life span
on them is only a couple of years or so, at least for those of us that have
the problem.

I believe this indicates that you have set the H/W NB threshold or width
to too high of a value for your current noise or signal levels, which
has the noise blanker activated a majority of the time. This will
usually cause an unacceptable amount of intermodulation from adjacent
signals.

Reduce the threshold or width setting to eliminate the flashing.

Chris,
I installed a KNB2 in my K2 a few months ago. I didn't think it worked until
I tried the scratching of Q21 as recommended.

With the top off and background noise coming from the speaker, I toggled
from NB1 to NB2 to OFF while I scratched the case of Q21. It worked. I saw a
definite difference.

With the NB on I then toggled between both threshold levels and heard the
difference also.

Give this technique another try. Use a small screwdriver to scratch with.

Good luck.

John N2YC

I've never been convinced that my KNB2 worked as planned. I have the K2 open
today to install the K160RX, and decided to work on the KNB2.

I found the archive messages about scratching Q21. I can only get any
noise out of this with the pre-amp on - don't know if that's as expected or
not. No setting of the NB changes the audio through the headphones.

I can tap Q21 and get a pulse on my scope, or rub the case back and forth to
get something a little more continuous (but still hard to capture on the
scope - despite being quite evident in the headphones).

Some of the time, my pulses just die at the output of R8, which goes to
ground via L1. I'm not sure exactly what I do differently when the pulse
gets past - perhaps just how hard I'm tapping?

If I have the NB turned off, the signal stops at pin 4 of U1 - I see pulses
there, but not at pin 1.

If I have the NB turned on, pin 4 is biased and pin 1 is biased even higher
- but I don't see the pulses at either pin.

I cancelled my order and asked for my deposit back. To bad Elecraft can't
ship their premier product out the door in a timely manner. And yes I've
been a big fan after building a K2, K1 and KX1.

So now I'll Xmas shop for a new rig! It won't be a K3 - to bad.

Jason, with respect, this is not bitching.

All people are asking for is honest and realistic communication from
Elecraft.

Lies and broken promises are fuelling discontent. People have contacted
Elecraft directly and are constantly being fed rubbish.

This is yet another email which needn't have been sent if we were kept
properly informed.

Honesty first, radio whenever. Chris G3SJJ

or were in the first run, or second run, didn't pay deposits, etc,
etc, etc, Ad nauseam, are entitled to a unit by unit run down of
 radios going out the door.

I've also noticed that the most vocal production and inventory
specialists aren't in any hurry to cancel their orders. What's the
word I'm looking for...? Never mind it would probably get me
 booted off the list.

A sign of the times we live in I suppose.

The intemperate attitude of some people around here is starting to get a bit
irritating.

Believe me, there are a lot more people who are unhappy about being kept
waiting than you would know from this reflector. And some of the language
used in expressing this dissatisfaction privately is sometimes a lot more
blunt than has been used here, too. So let's have less of the insults,
please.

I'm sure Elecraft *is* doing the best it can to fulfil the outstanding
orders. Unfortunately the best it can do seems to be falling a little short
of what was promised. Two estimates of when my own order would ship have
come and gone and now it looks like I'll have to ask for it to be postponed
until the new year so that I will be here to receive it. And you wonder why
*I* am frustrated?

People are not cancelling their orders because they still want this radio,
the reports of those lucky few who have received them are good, and because
having waited this long it would be stupid to bail out now when there
appears to be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Even though the
glimmer seems to be getting closer with appalling slowness.

As Dave W7AQK said, venting is one way of relieving the frustration of
waiting. It's human nature. These shipping discussions are only going to be
replaced by technical ones when more people have actual K3s to discuss and
fewer people are kicking their heels waiting for them. You'll just have to
get used to it.

Almost every ham rig is released and publicized long before
 the radio hits the market.

That's true to some extent but other than the Icom 7700 and
perhaps the TenTec Orion, I don't know of any that received
such extensive promotion so far in advance of delivery in
real quantity. In particular, I can't think of any where the
manufacturer encouraged significant deposits or full payment
up-front and then missed the first delivery target for those
pre-paid orders by more than 90 days.

I understand the temptation to announce a product at a large
trade show (hamfest) even though deliveries are in the
future. I understand the desire to provide an attractive
availability date. I even understand problems involved in
ramping up production when the initial prototype is complete
and working. However, to accept orders (particularly with
payment at the time of order or with significant deposits)
for products that are not in production and can not possibly
be delivered in a timely manner and then fail to provide
realistic schedule updates is questionable - and a sure way
to alienate potential customers.

Don, the long wait is not a problem, even though they have had $1372 of
my money for 7 months and not even a personal thank you or apology.

*The real problem is the constant lies and broken promises coming out of
Aptos, together with the lack of explanation, in fact, virtual silence*.

Those of us who placed early orders did so on the basis of the trust
built up between Elecraft and its customer base.

That trust has been severly damaged, not by the delays but by the
breakdown of communication.

Many of us had planned various activities involving our K3s. For me
initially it was a small Low Power Field Day in July, then it was IARU
Region SSB Field Day in September, then it was an SO2R effort in RSGB
21/28MHz Contest in October, then it was lending it to our G5W effort in
CQWW, and this weekend it was supposed to be a dual mode, multi op
effort in ARRL 10m contest. Each event was planned on the basis of what
proved to be mis-information from Aptos. Mid January sees an RSGB
contest that I have excelled in over the years. As early as May 14 this
year, when I placed my order for a K3/100 plus sub receiver, I began
planning for the 2008 event. Even at this this stage I cannot be sure of
having my K3, and only in the past week have I had to accept I won't
have the sub-rx. The way I found out was an un-announced change on the
shipping date.

Again going on the scant information, I have delayed arranging a
pre-Christmas trip out of the country to be around if or when my K3 is
delivered. I am still not sure whether it will be shipped. One person
was recently told that his order placed 6 July would be delivered by the
end of this year!! Numerous people have been told two weeks for several
times. The way I view it at the moment is that shipping came to a halt a
week ago, yet not a word.

This is not the efficient, honest and friendly service we have become to
expect from Elecraft. They have produced a really fantastic product and
our hearts go out to the team struggling to meet the rightful demand,
but lies and unbroken promises are not helping them or us.

Many years ago whilst in sales and marketing of thick film hybrid
modules into the defence industry I received a telephone call late one
evening from the manufacturing director of a very major defence
contractor. His modules were 3 weeks late and no warning or expalanation
had been given. If we had told him he could have re-scheduled. I was
given huge roasting and needless to say didn't sleep much that night. I
did however keep my customers well informed after that.

Some honest and realistic information would have prevented this email
and most of the preceeding ones

Don Wilhelm wrote:
By my count, it does look like there are now at least 30 K3s being
shipped per week over the past 2 week period, judging from the serial
numbers that have been posted on the wiki.

That means that Don Rasmussen's projections are overly pessimistic.
By my estimate (again judging only from the serial numbers accounted
for), serial number 225 should ship well before Christmas, and they
should have shipped SN 250 before the first of the year. I don't know
how many are in the 1st batch, but most have figured it is less than 250.

The folks at Aptos are working hard to hone their production
capabilities and get these first orders shipped. It has been a long
period of overtime for all of them. I will get my K3 in due time I am
certain, and I am certainly not going to bug them about it - whining
about it will not hurry the process and may even slow it down.

I think it's just that a few folks need to vent a little after the

output is picking up nicely. I think over 50 K3's are going out now
each week--maybe more. So everyone needs to hook up their Valium
drip and take a deep breath. Things will settle down soon.

Arrogant? Whining? Twits? I don't see any arguments there for why it is not
legitimate to voice one's frustration over optimistic delivery estimates and
broken promises.

But thanks to your reasoned reply I have now decided to consider cancelling

And at this point I wonder why I need a hobby pursued by people who can

I can see people saying he should talk, he's a beta tester and has had his

Anyway, as a beta tester -- although I don't work for Elecraft and don't

to what is going on at Elecraft than others. And I can say that I see
problems being solved, big improvements made, and processes smoothed out as
the experiences of the early users are factored in.

The fact is that unless a huge meteorite lands in Santa Cruz county,
everyone is going to get their K3s, and they are going to be good radios.

That's correct. I forgot about Dave Benson's method. And I'm sure
Lisa could fit that in to her daily schedule. I mean, she can't be that

I haven't ordered my K3 yet (still saving up my pennies), but I follow
every bit of info here religiously. I really don't understand this
competitive sensitivity to numbers of K3s ordered/shipped and who's
haven't shipped yet. Dave Benson (Smallwonder Labs) has for a long time
listed every order not yet shipped on his website - by name and order
date. He does this even though he may be way behind in shipping. It
takes some time, but if Dave can do it (I think he's pretty much a
one-man operation), I would think Elecraft could. Perhaps they could do
it by this recently discovered invoice number if that is something
everyone gets when they order??? Would save a lot of anxiety among the
natives, and reduce traffic here.

The KBPF3 mounts on the KRX3 just as it does on the RF board. The KRX3 is
basically the RX portion of the RF board that mounts above the RF board,
with enough space to clear the boards plugged into the RF board (KBPF3,
KNB3, etc.).

A KBPF3 can mount on either or both of the RF board and the KRX3
simultaneously in the same K3.

The Web version has low-res pictures and that makes it smaller. If it helps
any I built my K3 from that version of the assembly manual and the pictures
are sufficiently detailed to determine what you're supposed to do.

There are two places where the pictures are of a different (older? newer?)
version of the RF board (figs 56 and 58), but it's completely obvious what
they're trying to show you (the important components were in the same
location on my board as in the picture; it was two nearby components that
were different). Fig 57 shows the components in the location that matched my
board.

There are pictures of a couple connectors that need to mate when you're
attaching the front panel assembly to the RF board assembly that have plenty
of resolution but the connectors themselves were harder to see on my boards
than they were in the pictures (Fig 54). And it doesn't matter anyway
because that step is difficult no matter what pictures they show you.

There are some pictures very early in the process of locations of standoffs
that aren't very helpful (figures 7 and 9) but it's because they don't give
enough context, not because they aren't of sufficient resolution. If you
refer back to the location of the mixer board and noise blanker board in
figure 1 it will give you a clue where the standoffs go.

Don't forget to check the site for an update after you get your K3. The one
in the box (or the one you printed out today) may be older than the one on
the Web site. Also don't forget to apply the errata.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 #36 Up and Running

Well I managed to get the K3 up and running last night. Passesd all
tests first time.
The build took me around 8 hours but I did not hurry.
I think its a must to sort out the hardware into containers, not only
does this aid assembly time it reduces the risk of errors.

I invested in an ESD mat for this build I thought it was about time...
Im sure I destroyed an ADC when building my K2 some years ago Im sure
this was due to static.

I was a little concerned after installation of the Noise blanker board
as it did not sit level to the RF board.
I thought that the standoff I had installed was a little short.
Measuring it it was correct as per the manual . Removing the board got
me a little worried as there appeared to be a pin missing from J77and
the hole in the socket was filled!
I thought that somehow the pin had broken off.
Phone call to Elecraft Tech Help releived my worries here.
Not all the pins are present and used on a lot of the connectors of the
boards in the kit.
The reason it was not sitting as it should non the sscoket was that the
unused pin had been cut and left a little long. Filing this down cured
the problem.

The siting of the front panel board on the panel itself took me 45 mins
I think I was a little timid it did not seem to want to go all the way
at the mic socket end.
the LEDS were lining up OK but after a while it just slipped into place
everything looking perfect. It is a tight fit but then it has to be. Be
patient here!

The three TMP cables connecting the KREF3/RF BOARD/ KSYN3 boards were
diffficult to insert in their respective sockets mine were a very tight fit
1 cable had been crimped over the plug end itself but I managed to
reshape this using pliers and insert it without damage to the cable or
the socket. you have to get them perpendicular to get them in easily and
applyiny an even pressure

It was an enjoyable build to see those boards coming together but I have
to admit not nearly as enjoyable as the K2/ K1.
Anderson POWERPOLE CONNECTORS SOLDERED The smell of flux, that brings
back memories.

Power up!
This worried me hiss from the speakers. Antenna connected. No signals.
Dont be alarmed you have to get into the menu system and set the filters
per mode this brought things to life.
The audio sounds suberb... CW and SSB. I have the 2.7Khz SSB and 400Hz
CW filters.

Updated the software today using a serial cable. Took a few minutes, no
problems.

Im not going to get much time if any to play today but from impressions
so far this rig oozes quality from the received audio point of view.
A quick play with the DSP on SSB signals last night was impressive you
will see what I mean when yours arrives.

Thats it so far.
Worth the wait?
Certainly looks like it.
Thank you Wayne Eric and all at Elecraft .

Rowland G4APO

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] K2 Navigator Interface

2007-11-07 Thread Stan Rife
I made my own cable. I used the 1/8 stereo plug for the RCV audio, and I
believe I use a 1/8 mono for the TX audio because I have one of the Heil
microphone adapter cables that breaks out the Keying and TX audio ckts to
seperate 1/4 1/8 jacks accordingly. Made it pretty simple versus having to
wire up a mic plug and switch that out all the time. I use a series of 1/8
1/4 (RadioShack) Y adapter cables and have my Heil headset hooked up all the
time as well as the audio cables from the Navigator. Actually I have to disco
the TX audio plug from the headset to eliminate the open microphone on TX while
using the Navigator.

I used stereo and mono cables from Radio shack that were already made up. I
just cut them in half and used which ever half had the right connector on it
and soldered them all in to a DB25 male connector. Turned out kind of
professional looking. That is probably the expensive route to go, but it still
didn't cost the 48 bucks that US Interface wants for a made up cable. Since I
was using the Heil microphone adapter cable, I would have had to modify their
cable anyway.

I was also thinking about the reckless abandon look of the mess of torroids
on the boards. when I hand crafted my K2 I made sure things were nice and
neat so I could say with pride that I built that. If someone looks inside my

I suppose it makes no difference in the operation of the radio, but my god,
don't those board assemblers have any pride in their work?

I guess it's a matter of taste. I like something that looks like it was
crafted with the care of human hands instead of everything being lined up
perfectly by a heartless robot. It's amusing to me to think that the sales
person that took my order for a K3 could be the same person who may have
wound my toroids. It makes me feel like I'm getting a custom radio. I think
the K3 looks really beautiful.
Mine is a May 1st purchase so it can't be long now.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3s Start Shipping!

The first production K3s started shipping today! (Oct 9th) :-) We
worked overtime last week and through the weekend to get everything in
order. We had the usual last minute glitches (missing hardware we
thought we had received, MORE toroid winding in Aptos, minor PCB
assembly errors, documentation snafu's etc.) but we were able to resolve
everything in time for shipping today. Whew!

Here's a picture of Lisa with the first K3/100 kit of this batch going
out the door. :-)
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/Lisa%20with%20K3%20a%20sm.JPG

After today's batch of K3s we will pause shipping for two days to let
the dust settle and to make doubly sure we have everything in proper
order. We will continue testing and packaging the K3 kits tomorrow and
Thursday. We'll resume shipping on Friday and should continue shipping
on a daily basis, Monday-Friday, after that. This week we are beginning
with the kit versions of the K3. Mid next week the first built K3s will
begin rolling out the door.

The rest of this week we will be contacting those of you that will be
shipping over the next two weeks. Due to the very high number of orders
that we received the first day at Visalia and via FAX/Internet (actually
the first couple of weeks!) we will not be shipping all the first day
orders on the first day, or two, or three. :-) But we are working hard
to get everyone's K3 out the door quickly. Initial shipment rates will
of course start out in small groups and slowly accelerate to more units
per day as we ramp up. But our top priority to to make sure we get you a
complete and quality product. Please be patient with us. We're just as
anxious as you to get your radio on its way.

The K3 Operating manual is complete and I'll be posting it and the K3
option manuals to the web by end of day tomorrow. I'll post a note here
when they are on-line.

Now, where is that champagne...

Eric, I'm glad I saw this KAT100 thread. I wanted to ask if the KAT100 will

BUT, if you are trying to fit everything into one K2 package with the
KPA100 as the top cover on a K2, then neither the KIO2 nor the KAT100

I have had good luck with the fence wire that I use. It is Aluminum
wire and seems to hold up good. I have a 20M dipole up now that is made with
it. It has not been up very long. But I have used this same wire for ground
radials for my vertical and it holds up nicely, except when I or the dogs
trip over it and break it. It does not have much tensile strength as you can

RF travels on and/or near the surface of a conductor.
The plating on fence wire tarnishes / corrodes rapidly

Re: [Elecraft] Re: filter selection

2007-05-05 Thread Stan Rife
I'd like to add that, I personally, was initially confused by all of the filter
selections and was totally ignorant on the subject of roofing filters. But
after reading a lot of the posts and asking some questions, I think I have a
handle on it enough to make an informed decision for myself on what I might
need as far as these filters go.

Like Wayne stated, these various selections are an end result of what
different people like, and have requested in the past. So now these options are
available. One person might like 200hz, and another 250hz. It may be somewhat
intimidating to the un-initiated (me for sure), but this list and Elecraft have
always been here to clarify and answer our questions. I hardly believe that it
will intimidate anyone to the point that they will not buy a K3.

And if anyone thinks that it is unecessarily complicated, that is their
opinion, but in the end I doubt that it will affect your paycheck any.

wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Bill Tippett wrote:

My point is that you introduce unnecessary complexity with the vast
number of roofing filters. 400 vs 500, 250 vs 200, etc.

We're providing a range of options so the customer can decide which
they want. We may add supplemental information to the order form to
make decisions easier, but we're not likely to reduce the number of
filters offered.

As one example here are Elecraft's own specs for the 400 8-pole versus
 250 8-pole:

Filter 6 dB BW 60 dB BW

 KFL3-400K 435 Hz 935 Hz
 KFL3-250K 370 Hz 785 Hz

The reason we offer both of these INRAD filters is that they're both,
historically speaking, very popular. I agree that the frequency spacing
of these filters could be clarified in their literature, but again, we
offer them because our customers asked for them, and we're passing
along the model numbers used by INRAD.

We offer our own narrow filter (200 Hz) for those who really want to
maximize rejection of unwanted signals in CW and data modes. Such
narrow bandwidths have been very popular over the years, including in
the K2.

In my opinion these filters are redundant and unnecessarily complicate
the ordering process. 65 Hz difference in 6 dB BW is hardly worth
bothering with, especially since both are 8-pole and their IMD/BDR
performance is likely to be identical.

As I explained above, this is a somewhat anomalous historical
situation. If INRAD would like to create alternative filters with
different specs, we're open to offering them.

It's your decision of course but I'm a believer in keep it simple.
I would offer only the best filter for a given BW, predetermined by
Elecraft and based upon actual IMD/BDR measurements inside the K3.

Eventually we'll have such measurements. For now, we're not about to
limit anyone's personal choice.

We'll also provide great leeway in letting customers change their order
if new information causes them to rethink their filter complement.

Wayne

just 100 watts and no bells and whistles. The 2.7 roofing filter comes with the
unit, so you would have a workable unit after building it.

So, the price comparison I put out last weekend was...well...wrong! Wrong on so
many levels.

I did not understand roofing filters at time and considered them IF Filters. I
was informed by very nice people that not all five filters would be needed. So,
that was a bogus assumption on my part.

Also, I looked at the price from a full blown perspective. What I like about
Elecraft is that you can put in the pieces when you can afford them. Not like
other companies who do not offer that kind of flexibility.

So...sorry about the poor email

Hmmm... I just went back through my reflector mail as well as the published
Omni-VII literature, and I can't find anywhere it says 6 dB per S-unit. I
could have swore that I read that. Could be I assumed it, though... That
used to be one of the standards in days gone by... LONG gone by...

Just did the math based on S9 = 50 uV, and if you figure 1 uV for S0, you
get 3.775 dB per S-unit, pretty much what you said. If you use 6 dB per
S-unit, a 0.25 uV signal (nominal minimum detectable) would be between an S1

and an S2. Is this right? On the face of it, it doesn't seem so -- but if
you go by the old-time verbal strength descriptions for the S scale, an S1
is a barely perceptible signal. Neglecting any atmospheric noise floor for

the moment, a barely perceptible signal in a modern HF receiver would be
about 0.25 uV, so by these lights, maybe the 6 dB per S-unit isn't so far
off.

Maybe 5 dB makes the most sense, since this places the minimal detectable
signal near S0, and anything above that would move the S-meter (including
the atmospheric noise floor). I think that would be my vote.

We do agree on 50 uV = S9. Whether the S-meter compensates for the
preamp and attenuator is an interesting subject; we might provide a
menu entry to turn this on/off.

state of pre-amps or attenuators switched in/out.

The KPA800/1500 amplifiers will work with any rig, including the K2 and

everyone informed of progress.

We plan an external speaker/power supply unit for the K3 someday, as

The K2 may benefit from some of the K3's hardware and firmware,

RE: [Elecraft] Signal Generator

2007-04-25 Thread Stan Rife
Check at Fair Radio. I bought a surplus military signal generator
for less than 200 bucks (160 or 180). The one I purchased is a URM-25D. It
does AM and CW modulation (no FM). They said it worked...and it did, but the
output was kind of flaky. I sent it off to a place in Washington state that
refurbished the unit and made it work like new for 60 bucks. They did a
bunch of circuit mods and replaced a lot of components that had deteriorated
with age. The shipping ate me up though, as the unit weighs around 50 pounds
packaged for shipment. It should last me a LONG time.

Al,

I cannot comment offhand about any low cost commercial signal signal
generator that would suit your requirements, but if you are prepared to
homebrew there are many low cost options. If you did
homebrew and if you needed to know the output level from the generator when
using it, you would need to measure RF voltage with good accuracy when
calibrating the generator feeding a 50 ohm load. Also I would suggest in
this case that you purchase rather than build a step attenuator capable of
introducing at least 60db of attenuation. It is possible to build a good
step attenuator, but you would require
good test equipment to check its performance, also its enclosure and its
internal shielding partitions have to be built in addition to the
'electronics'.

On the other hand if you only require a generator which can produce a stable

but tuneable unmodulated carrier in the 40 - 15m bands, and you are not
interested in the actual value of its output level (which could be adjusted
during use), a homebrewed generator can be very simple. Other than a
receiver with frequency readout test equipment is not essential, although
having a DMM is a good idea.

Please contact me off-list if you would like to discuss this further.

Check out Jack Smith's website for a fairly simple method of
determining the sensitivity of your K2. There are some readings that Jack
took of his K2, and also readings that I took on my K2. I've provided a link

you might want to take a look at.

Paul,

I do not have 10 meter specific MDS measurements handy. I can measure 2 K2s
sometime in th efuture if it is necessary, but it will be after I get the
workbench cleared.

If you have the equipment, measure the RX VFO injection level to the mixer
(TP1) - it should be +7 dBm for good mixer performance. Assuming the mixer
presents a 50 ohm load to the VFO signal and your measurement does not
interfere with the loading, you should see a 500 mVrms voltage at the mixer
port or 1.416 volts peak to peak on a 'scope. In-situ measurement is not
the best for this, substitution would be better, but you can draw some
conclusions based on the in-situ measurement if the input impedance to the
measuring device is high enough (you will be measuring in the 23 to 24 MHz
range, so be certain the instrument is capable of accurate readings at that
frequency (a 150 MHz 'scope with 150 MHz 10X probe should give good
measurements).

If the 10 meter VFO input is sufficient, you should be getting full benefit
from the mixer, and there is nothing short of reducing the losses in the
bandpass filters, T-R switch, and Low Pass Filter that will improve the MDS
on 10 meters. If you find the mixer input level low, it can be adjusted by
changing the resistors on the U2 buffer, but check all bands so you don't
overdrive the mixer if you change the level. If the VFO level changes
between bands, look for some frequency dependency in the VFO ALC circuit.

My reasoning: - beyond the mixer, the K2 response should be the same from
band to band, the only thing that will make changes on one band and not
others is between the antenna jack and the mixer.

Don W3FPR

 -Original Message-
I do own the XG2 and have performed MDS measurements on my K2 using the
XG2 and also a milspec signal generator I have. The numbers agree very
closely with published specs ON 20 METERS. On ten meters I measured an
MDS of -124 dbm (preamp off) and -130dbm (preamp on). IMHO, an MDS less
than -130 dbm is not acceptable for weak signal reception. Which means
to me that on 10 meters the preamp is absolutely required.
snip...
I just want to know if my K2 is healthy
 or not.

I think the K2 is a masterpiece of 'elegant simplicity' and my intent is
not to knock the rig. I've had more fun since the my kit arrived than
I've had since the heathkit days.

Nope, none whatsoever... the MOSFET at the T-R output of the KPA100 is
more than adequate to key just about any T-R line which offers a POSITIVE
DC voltage less than about 200VDC and 5A... UNfortunately, it will NOT

73,

Tom Hammond N0SS

For negative voltage keying I found that
using the the circuit by K4IQJ from May 1989 QST,
http://www.arrl.org/members-only/tis/info/pdf/sstrans.pdf worked well
between a Heathkit SB200 and the K2. I built it on a Sunday and the
only high voltage P-channel enhancement mode MOSFET available at the
local Fry's electronics was an NTE2381 which is overkill. I deleted
the zener diode that K4IQJ included to protect the transceiver since the
diode protector in the MOSFET of the K2 is rated to handle the full fault
current from the SB200 (You should verify this yourself before doing
what I did. That is, I believe, [but haven't tried it!] that you can
stupidly connect the SB200 to the K2 directly and the K2 will survive.)

The circuit is simple; I built it into a small plastic box that sits
behind the SB200. The K2 keys (to ground) a 1K ohm resistor connected
to the positive terminal of a 9 volt battery whose negative terminal
connects to the gate of the FET. A 470K ohm resistor connects from
the gate to ground. The source is grounded, and the drain and ground
connect to the SB200. K4IQJ included a 15 volt 1 watt zener from the
gate to ground, to clamp the voltage on his rig if the MOSFET failed,
and suggested using an IRF9610, IRF9612, IRF9620, IRF9630 or IRF9632
for the MOSFET.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 frequency drift

2006-12-24 Thread Stan Rife
I don't really see, or notice, any drift in my K2. I'm sure it does
a bit, but it must be a small amount, and negligible for my purposes

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 frequency drift

Kevin,

The RA resistor on the thermistor board is intended to compensate for drift
AFTER warmup - such as drift that might occur due to the additional heating
when the KPA100 is transmitting. I do not believe it would be fruitful to
attempt to compensate for the initial warmup drift that one may find in the
K2 - and you may wind up overcompensating and find the drift after a warmup
period would be greater - it would not be good to have a K2 that does not
drift when first turned on and then begins to drift after some warmup
period.

Or perhaps better said, the thermistor board provides compensation for the
PLL reference oscillator. There are many more components involved in the
initial warmup drift - the BFO is one.

It would be interesting to try, but would take a lot of controlled test
conditions to verify the results.

The K2 PLL Ref Upgrade manual gives some information on typical drift i.e.
5 to 20 Hz per 15 degrees F on 20 meters. It also explains how changing RA
on the thermistor board can better compensate for the drift. Since your
drift is consistent, I think you should be able to reduce it by adjusting
 RA on the thermistor board.

And I think Elecraft will continue to be well supported as well.

The test may be eliminated, but all the reasons that CW is popular will

countries that phased out their own testing requirements in past years.

It's fun for many of us, of course. But it's also characterized by
generally simpler equipment, and offers a higher signal-to-noise ratio
than voice modes for a given power level or amount of signal
processing. This is why it's appropriate for gear that we carry on
backpacking trips and for emergency use, and of course for QRP gear in
general.

CW has a standardized shorthand (including Q signals and common
abbreviations) that transcend language barriers. And it's a digital
communications mode, yet it doesn't require a computer or specialized
interfaces. There's an immediacy to CW communications that makes it
feel quite personal -- just as if you're talking, which of course you
are.

Then there's my personal favorite: When I'm out camping in some remote
location, late at night, I can put on my headphones and make two-way
contacts with faraway places -- without disturbing anyone sleeping
close by. (There's something about surfing the ionosphere, with all its
propagation modes, odd noises, and unexpected surprises, that you just
can't duplicate using the internet.)

Elecraft will continue to strongly support both CW equipment and CW
operation.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 problems

2006-12-11 Thread Stan Rife
What were your results when completeing each stage of the build?
Were the alignment requirements met at each one of those stages? If they
were, then you should at least have a good receive on each band. I don't
know what would have changed so drastically that you now have no receive at
all...not to mention the transmitter.

I would probably start at the beginning and do each stage of the
realignment again, and if you come to an alignment step that does not meet
expectations, start your trouble shooting at that point.

Well I have K2 #5846 with all components in the enclosure, but it's
not doing what I hoped for.

Have been trying to align it and this is what I am getting. 80 meters
no receive or output. 40 meters 20 watts out and no receive.
30 meters 10 watts out and very weak receive.
20 meters 1 watt out and no receive.
17 meters no output and no receive.
15 meters no output or receive.
12 meters no output or receive.
10 meters no output or receive.

The output measured with a heathkit meter, which is very close to
being accurate, but not calabrated. On the first power up before
begining alignment I had a very weak recieive on 15 meters.
The signal source for tuning it is another transceiver with output
 set to 5 watts.
At one time I had a good receive signal on 40 meters but lost it in
 tuning the other frequencies.
I think the problem is in the receiver, but don't know where to
start looking. Have checked for cold solder joints several times.
 Anyone have any ideas?
 Thanks

[Elecraft] Noise source on 30 20 meters

2006-12-09 Thread Stan Rife
Thanks to Leigh's (WA5ZNU) suggestions, I found the source of my
noise right here in my own shack. It was a noisy (switching) wall wart power
supply for my D-Link 7 port USB hub.

Jeff (WB5GWB) said he was also having some major noise at his QTH,
and he found that his DSL router was causing some serious EMI for him. He
was also unable to operate because of the noise.

Thanks for all the help from those who responded. I appreciate it
greatly. Jeff and I discussed how we procrastinated getting around to
actually searching for the problem because of how difficult we thought the
task was going to be. The thought of walking around the neighborhood for
hours on end with an EMI sniffer, and having to call the power company to
come out and investigate, or maybe have to deal with a not so friendly
neighbor...it just seemed like too much trouble.

[Elecraft] 30 meter S-meter reading

2006-12-09 Thread Stan Rife
I recalibrated my S-meter and now the constant 2 bar reading on 30m
is not present any longer. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time that I have
had to recalibrate the S-meter in the 2 1/2 years since I built my K2. Has
anyone else had to recalibrate their S-meter occasionally? Is something (AGC
voltage) changing in the circuitry to cause this, and is it something I need
to be concerned about?

[Elecraft] 30 meter gain

2006-12-08 Thread Stan Rife
My K2 seems to have way too much gain with the preamp on for 30
meters, OR I have a bad EMI problem here. The noise level stays at 10 to 20
over S9 with it on, and it is not useable with the noise floor that high.
With the preamp off, the S-meter seems to sit around S3. Is this normal for
30 meters on the K2? I seem to remember the manual stating that the preamp
was not needed on the lower bands. I thought 30 meters was considered one of
the high bands (with 20m) and so I had left the preamp on for 30.

I have really been plagued with a lot of noise here in the past
several months, and I am trying to figure out if I have an EMI problem here
locally. My noise level has been very high most of the time lately on 20
meters. Only occasionally is it low enough that I can use that band. I am
thinking that the problem is present on 30 meters as well, but just can't
remember what the preamp setting is for that band. I seem to remember that
the preamp was on all the time for 30 meters, but I am just not sure now. At
this hour there are no sigs on 30m to tell what my receiver is doing with
the preamp off.

My antenna is a Butternut HF9V vertical that I have had for a couple
of years. This evening I strung up a 20 meter dipole just to see if it would
make any difference. I see a little improvement on 20 meters, but the noise
is still S7 to S9 and 30m is just as noisy as ever with the preamp on.

Also, do any of you notice these noise waves that float across the
bands? I don't know what the official name for them are (if there is one),
and that is the only thing I could come up with. They appear to be about 6
to 8khz wide.
