Re: [Elecraft] K4 Ethernet connection
An access point will do the job, it can be set up as a simple bridge between WiFi and wired ethernet, and you can place it as far away from your transmitting equipment in the shack as possible and run a cable to a wired switch that provides access for your cabled equipment. It's very worthwhile to use shielded cat5e/cat6 cabling and grounding all switches etc. when in an RF rich environment such as your shack. 73 Thomas OZ5TN (aka M0TRN, AF7BE) On Wed, 9 Sep 2020, 19:29 Joseph Trombino, Jr, wrote: > Howdy Gang. > > Need someone with a bit of wireless experience to give me some assistance. > > Currently my Verizon home wireless phone router is not co-located in my > shack. > > There is an Ethernet jack on the router that I’ve used to install new > firmware in my Flex radios but I have to carry and power-up the Flex at the > router location which is very inconvenient. > > If my K4 ever gets here (grin) I will need a wireless device that can > receive WI-FI from my router and provide an Ethernet jack to hose up to the > K4 in my shack. > > So, WI-FI to Ethernet device is needed. > > Does such an animal exist, if so, any recommended models to look for? > > Many thanks for any assistance. > > Stay safe and healthy. > > 73, Joe W2KJ > I QRP, therefore I am > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to tho...@horsten.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K4 Remote Question
I'd always say use wired ethernet (with shielded cable) in or near the shack, a WiFi router or access point there is fine for things like your phone and tablets, but for radios, logging/controlling PC's etc. it's way too unreliable when you start operating. It's so annoying when your WiFi router crashes and reboots in the middle of a contest or even just disconnects intermittently whenever you transmit on a certain band, etc. If you must use wireless, I'd recommend having a WiFi bridge or access point as far away from your transmitting equipment, coax etc. as possible and use cables from there to the rest of the shack. 73, Thomas OZ5TN (aka M0TRN, AF7BE) On Wed, 9 Sep 2020, 17:31 Pete Meier via Elecraft, wrote: > The K4 has an eithernet port for remote operations. Re: [Elecraft] 9:1 Balun
Many manual ATU's consist of a variable capacitor and a tapped inductor. It's a matching network but also works as an "on-the-fly" switchable balun. The difference is the location. The ATU typically sits at the rig end where a balun sits at the antenna feedpoint (and so may present the coax with a better matching impedance, plus acts as a choke reducing common mode current). You can have a remote-controlled automatic ATU at the feed point in which case you'll always have a perfect match for your coax. Great for a stealth multiband in the attic, but it's an expensive and clunky solution for portable operations. 73 Thomas OZ5TN (aka M0TRN, AF7BE) On 1 February 2017 at 02:35, Kevin - K4VDwrote: > One thing I think would be great to have, especially built in as part of an > antenna tuner, is a switchable BALUN. Re: [Elecraft] 9:1 Balun
There's quite a lot of interesting theory in the thread, but I think for practical purposes my original answer still covers it, under the premise we're talking QRP with a short feedline of RG58 (a few yards). Small autotransformer baluns like the LDG 4:1 I use (I haven't tried the Elecraft one but I assume it's similar), are just really practical because they have screw terminals for the LW and the counterpoise. It's pretty easy to build your own if you really want to, but what happens inside that box is not likely to have a huge effect on the QSO's you manage. For portable ops, rearranging the long wire/counterpoise a bit is likely to improve your signal more than switching from a 4:1 balun to a 9:1, or none at all. 73, Thomas OZ5TN (aka M0TRN, AF7BE) On 1 February 2017 at 01:02, kev...@coho.netwrote: > We have all learned to say, "Yes Dear." and carry on. > > 73, > > Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] 9:1 Balun
Depends on your random wire and what band(s) you want to use. For some bands the 9:1 "balun" (not used as a true balun in this case, since both the coax and the random wire are unbalanced by nature) will step the feedpoint impedance down to something that's a better match for the 50 ohm coax, limiting coax losses. It can also allow your ATU to tune up on frequencies otherwise outside its range. Use the "balun" with a counterpoise or earth. In some cases the 4:1 or 1:1 balun may be a better choice, or even connecting the wire directly to the coax center conductor (and counterpoise to the shield). All depends on QRG and wire length. If the ATU can tune it up, you're good to go, if not, change one or more parameters until it can (wire length, balun ratio, counterpoise length and orientation). Re: [Elecraft] Suggested key/paddle for CW for a the K3 and others (not expensive)
Hi Cliff, If you are not aspiring to be a speed demon (40WPM plus), Iambic keying is the most comfortable and it is very easy to learn. So get a dual lever paddle. You say not too expensive, that rules out my favorite, Begali Sculpture, but there is a reason that the Bencher BY-1 is considered the standard dual-lever paddles by a lot of people, and that is that it's relatively cheap (and widely available used), and performs relatively well. It's not a Begali by any stretch of the imagination but it's still precise enough and has a decent enough feel that you can comfortably roll along at 25-30WPM without getting fatigued or annoyed. So go for one of those, preferably pick it up used for $30 or so, and do not try a Begali first or you will not want to touch a Bencher again, but then again, the Bencher is perfectly good for what it is. There are many other paddles around, I've tried a Vibroplex once and found it far too clunky and with a sluggish feel, but maybe that was just that one (it was a single-lever as well) - definitely wasn't for me. The KXPD3 for the KX3 is great as well for what it is - it is far better than a Bencher IMHO, and in a much smaller form-factor, of course using the KX3 as a counterweight and not suitable for use with a K3 or any other rig. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 4 January 2013 21:40, Clifford Hynds vk2...@gmail.com wrote: HI, OK this is probably a hard question but I am looking at something other than a straight key to try my hand at CW again. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Quick survey: Need a 0-dBm transverter interface module for the KX3? (KXXV3)
Hi Wayne, I think it's a great idea, but the major appeal would be if you also could offer an ultra-portable KXXV transverter series to go with this. My thought is something maybe half the size of the KX3, with room for several transverter modules, like 2m, 70cm, 4m, etc. Ideally with 5W+ output on all of those, and ideally with EXT Power (also in the KXXV3) from the KX3 so you'd just have to hook up a single power supply to the KX3. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 25 September 2012 03:06, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: Hi all, We've had a couple of requests for a 0-dBm transverter I.F. module for the KX3. Normally the lowest power level the KX3 can put out is 0.1 watts, so the I.F. module would drop the signal by 20 dB. Such a module could easily be designed, but there's one catch (I'll get to that). A composite RF detector on the module would provide accurate measurement of the RF output signal level from about -10 to +2 dBm, probably). The KX3's normal TUNE power display in watts would change to milliwatts and dBm rather than watts and SWR. (The K3 does the same thing when a KXV3 module is in use.) An SMA connector on the right side panel would serve as the transverter I.F. input/output. There would *not* be both RX and TX jacks, so all external transverters would have to have their own T/R path switching. We would provide a DC voltage on the SMA output jack (some transverters use this for signaling). We also plan to do transverter band switching via the GPIO signal on the ACC2 jack. This could control Elecraft XV-series transverters. The other pin on the ACC2 jack is a keying output which many transverters also need. Note that the XV-series can use a 0.1-watt I.F. signal, so technically a KXXV3 is not needed in that case. But the KXXV3 would allow you to keep an HF antenna connected to the BNC antenna jack while transverters are connected to the SMA jack. It would also provide better control over the drive level on bands where you've selected the 0-dBm output. The KX3 has up to 9 programmable transverter band displays, and a choice of 40/20/15/10/6 meters as the I.F., selected on a per- transverter-band basis. 10 meters is used for most trnasverters. Here's the catch: The only place such a module could go would be the same place where we plan to mount the 2-meter transverter, so the two would be mutually exclusive. Please let me know if you could definitely use a KXXV3. If there's enough interest we'll add it to the list of future options. 73, Wayne N6KR Yahoo! Hi Gary, The point is not to widen the SSB but to use the FM crystal filter to limit it. The DSP does the actual shaping of the TX signal which will still be the same width regardless of whether you're using the 6kHz filter or the 12.5kHz FM one. These were posted on the KX3 group (join if you are not there already, most of the KX3 talk goes on there). Anyway, for those of you who haven't seen it, I'm copying the two updates below: Hi all, I received the field tester upgrade kit this morning. It took about 10 minutes to install. The only problem was the size of the screw hole in the PCB was a bit tight, but I didn't need to drill as long as I carefully tightened each of the mounting bolts one turn at a time (this is a known problem and will be fixed in the final version). The kit consists of a new PCB with stainless steel fixed contacts, new contact screws with rounded ends, and two alternative springs to choose from with lower tension than the original. I selected the lowest tension spring and set the contact spacing at three quarters of a turn from the inner (fully closed) position. The paddles feel completely different. I tried sending some of the text from the upgrade instructions and didn't have a single missed dit or dah, and both the spring resistance and the crispness of the action is improved by an order of magnitude. I wouldn't say it rivals my Begali Sculpture but it is much closer to that feel than it was before. Now I just hope it stays that way, I guess with a portable rig, dirt on the contacts will be a bigger issue than for a home key, but out of the box, no complaints at all, thanks to everyone at Elecraft, you've done a great job. I did a video of my upgrade, but unfortunately my phone ran out of memory after 5 minutes, so the most interesting bits didn't get recorded. Maybe I'll post it anyway just to show the unboxing and the kit content. WX for the weekend is looking like we're in for a bit of Indian summer, with full sunshine and 27C, so I hope I'll be able to get some outdoor operating done with the KX3, maybe a WFF activation on Sunday. I'll report back after a while and see how it goes. 73, Thomas M0TRN After posting my first impressions just after the upgrade, I've used the upgraded KXPD3 for several real QSO's and I wanted to give an update. My KXPD3 already had the PCB mod performed which had greatly reduced the intermittent contact problem. So I didn't expect the upgrade to make that huge a difference (only compared to the unmodified PCB which was pretty horrid in this respect). But I actually find that the upgrade kit does far more than that. It takes the key and transforms it from a sub-Bencher feel to a near-Begali feel. To get reliable operation on the paddles before, the contact spacing needed to be over 1mm. I think the main reason was the shape of the end of the contact screws. Per the suggestions previously made on this list, I'd tried filing down the ends of the contact screws to get them more rounded, but I hadn't done a very good job at it. The new contact screws are stainless steel and already rounded from the factory. Also the contact posts are now stainless steel as well. Finally, the spring tension was too high for comfortable operation at a very low spacing. So the spacing needed to be at least 1mm or so for the key to be workable. It's probably down to a combination of all the upgraded materials, including the lower tension contact spring, but the key works perfectly now with sub-mm contact spacing. I am using a spacing of about 0.3-0.5mm, which corresponds to about three quarters of a turn of the contact screws, and have locked them in that position. This, in combination with the lowest tension spring, gives an unsurpassed feel that I have only before experienced in my Begali Sculpture. I can now send clean code at 35 WPM with these paddles, something that was unthinkable before. Although most of my QSO's are at 25 WPM, it is nice to be able to send QRQ when the opportunity is there, and that's now possible with the KXPD3. The only thing I am missing slightly is individual tension adjustment of the left and right paddle. Since I use paddles with my left hand (but in a default configuration with dits on the left), I tend to use my Sculpture with a slightly higher spring tension in the left paddle. But in such a tiny key I wouldn't expect that. In short it's now a paddle that works extremely well and where the precision label is 100% justified. To be honest I thought that was stretching it a bit in the original incarnation of the KXPD3. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 18 September 2012 00:26, Robert Vargas (KP4Y) k...@yahoo.com wrote: How did field testing of the KXPD3 paddle

Any terminal program should do, like Telix, if you have a standard serial port (I don't think there's any USB serial dongle drivers for DOS). Read the programmer's manual for the commands. Re: [Elecraft] I/O output level
It would be easier to just hook up the KX3 to the PC with the Phones jack to Line In on the PC. Then the KX3 has already demodulated it for you. If you use DATA mode then it will be a raw USB or LSB chunk ready for use in your favourite digimode program. If you still want to listen to the KX3, use a splitter and an external speaker and/or headphones. By the way, the KX3-PCKT cable kit from Elecraft has all the cables you'll need for either of these options, and is very reasonably priced (DX shipping is only $10 but you have to ask them to use USPS 1st Class). 73, Thomas M0TRN On 15 September 2012 22:25, jmb-f5...@orange.fr jmb-f5...@orange.fr wrote: Thanks for the fast reply, OM. Thanks for the answers Joe. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GPIO input to switch output power with external amplifier on?
First off I'm pretty sure Elecraft wouldn't mind if we built this. In fact I'm guessing if they had a cleaned up for publishing document with the protocol specification, Wayne would post it here. I'm guessing they don't, and it would be a lot of work to get it into a clean, publishable version - and the engineers are quite busy with KX3, KAT500, and other things. From a legal standpoint, there is nothing wrong with reverse engineering such a protocol and publishing the result, as long as there wasn't any misappropriation of trade secrets (e.g. using an unauthorized, leaked Elecraft document as a starting point). But monitoring the communications on the bus and from there working out the protocol, and implementing your own version, is a perfectly legal thing to do, and is in fact a protected right. The only exception would be DMCA-related, where you are not allowed to reverse engineer a protocol that's specifically designed to protect copyright - many do not like that law one bit, and it does not apply everywhere, but in any case a case like this falls way outside the scope of the DMCA. So it's perfectly legal to do :) 73, Thomas M0TRN On 4 September 2012 15:10, Stewart stew...@twinwood.me wrote: Raises some interesting questions... Can a unique protocol be protected ? Re: [Elecraft] Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Win-Test is my choice for contesting. In the latest contest I used my KX3 (novelty value and wanted to try a conetst in QRP), and I missed the automatic keying with DTR/CTS, but on the other hand had fun sending everything with the paddles. However, I think all of the programs you mention support the Win-Key keyer, which also uses serial port commands and has a protocol where you can query the buffer state and clear it. I think (and this would be one for Wayne to answer) that it would be easy enough to add a K(X)3 command in the firmware to allow you to query the buffer state and/or stop sending the remaining buffer. If so, it would be possible to add rig-controlled keying to these contest-loggers and/or write a generic Win-Key emulator that would present as a virtual serial port and handle the commands to the K(X)3. It would be great for the KX3 and even for the K3 as the CTS/DTR keying has a severe disadvantage in that Windows isn't a real-time operating system and sometimes the program will hang for a few milliseconds, resulting in a dit turning into a dah (or a pause), this could be avoided entirely by having the rig control the timing (as with the Win-Keyer). Wayne is probably extremely busy with KX3 stuff at the moment but an entry on the TODO/IDEAS list would be appreciated ;) 73, Thomas M0TRN On 9 August 2012 21:14, Joe Subich, W4TV li...@subich.com wrote: For Windows contesting packages, they are in seniority order, Writelog, N1MM Logger and Win-Test. Re: [Elecraft] Unhappy With Your KX3?
Hi Olli, Agree that it is marketed as a multi-purpose rig and it does it damned well too. With external powered speakers I would expect it to be excellent and that's my experience with it too. If it doesn't play well with the external speakers how can it play well with headphones. With just the internal speaker, sorry but did you actually look at the size of that thing, considering its size it actually performs really well, but not to hook up external speakers when used as a base station rig is IMHO just foolish, the internal speaker is fine for operating outside on the terrace table or out in the woods (in relatively quiet surroundings), but if you have it in your shack then what's the big problem hooking up external speakers and getting *excellent* audio with stereo FX and dual watch. The K3 has a much bigger speaker (surprise surprise) but even that misses the stereo (essential with the sub receiver) and it's got *nothing* on my AudioEngine A2 speakers, which I use for both my K3 and KX3 in the shack. In general I find it nicer to operate with speakers than with headset but for portable operations a headset is sometimes the most practical, and also at home if there are other people in the house doing noisy things or not appreciating the sounds from the rig. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 4 August 2012 11:59, Oliver Dröse dro...@necg.de wrote: Hi Jim, well, I would not agree on that points with you. As I would expect from any other radio, too. But the KX3 does the job okay in the (quiet) shack, as long as you don't expect it to provide sound loudness like a stereo system. ;-) 73, Olli - DH8BQA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Eric, 60 days, down from 6 months (I ordered mine on Dec 28 and received it in early July), you guys have done a great job in this roll out given the extreme demand. Imagine there's already more than 1000 KX3's out there. Still, you've managed to keep up top notch customer service, I've had replies to my queries within a day both times I contacted your crew (parts team). It's just a mind-blowing rig and you have a mind-blowing company, but I wouldn't be surprised if the lead time goes back up once the official reviews start hitting the masses, with the influx of orders bound to be generated from that. Wayne, Glad to hear it. This was my gut feeling when I got my kit, and I decided not to follow that part of the assembly guide and leave the grille in place. Now I'm glad I did! I'll follow whatever recommendations you come up with for the remaining vibrations, but on my unit it's not much of an issue, and only occurs at a very narrow range of frequencies. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Ken, I'm a bit sorry to (mostly) agree with your points. The Elecraft folks are certainly better rig designers than key makers. I'll say that the paddle is usable up to maybe 25 WPM and above that it becomes too erratic. The contact spacing needs to be far wider than what I'm comfortable with to avoid spurious contact, and it needs to be beaten much harder than what I'm used to. On the other hand comparing it to my Begali Sculpture is not fair. But I did write to Piero and ask if he'd make a paddle for the KX3, this was before the posts in this group, and he replied that he already was working on a prototype - I'm already signed up for it. But it would be nice if the Elecraft key could be modified to make it a little better with close contact spacing. Not sure if it's doable, but I'm open to any suggestions. So far, I'm planning to try rounding the contact screws like suggested by Wayne, and clean them up with DeOxit. Let's see how far that goes towards helping this issue. As I haven't been able to do more portable than back garden operations (weather only turned good this weekend!), so far I've mostly taken my Begali Sculpture out in the garden with me, but it won't be going with me on longer trips. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 24 July 2012 18:17, Ken Lopez kjlo...@earthlink.net wrote: Steve, and All, I have similar problems with my KXPD3. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Wayne, When you sent out the field test firmware I reported back to you an issue that seems very similar to this - although at the time I was certain it was a firmware issue. But looking at it now, it could well be this issue I was having as well, and it was just random that it hadn't shown up before I loaded that new firmware. After that first incident where it was very bad, I didn't have it come back at that strength. but I've seen a few missed/delayed dits and dahs with the KXPD3. So quite possibly it's this. Would you recommend filing off/rounding the ends of the set screws? Or take them out and clean them with deoxit, or both? 73, Thomas M0TRN On 23 July 2012 18:28, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: I discussed this with Wayne a few weeks ago and he suggested that I try cleaning the contacts. Some other keyer manufacturers who use cup-point set screws as contacts flatten (or round off) the screw ends using a fine file. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Remove plastic film on display?
Does this apply to the kit version? I'd have thought it was in place to protect the LCD in transit and during handling while assembling (until it's installed and the bezel takes over that protective role). In the factory built version it'd be very fiddly to remove it, but in the kit it's easy enough to remove although due care should be taken and a note to that effect in the assembly manual might be helpful. 73, Thomas On 9 July 2012 23:00, Ron D'Eau Claire r...@cobi.biz wrote: The film is supposed to have removed at the factory for just that reason. [Elecraft] [OT] Bluetooth and RF
Hi guys, I know it's a bit off-topic but there are so many knowledgeable people here that I thought I'll try asking. I've built a multifunction CW keyer with a straight key, paddle, and keyboard input, that uses an AVR microcontroller. Currently I'm using PS/2 for the keyboard input as it's easy to implement in the AVR (and a cheap $2 adapter allows the use of USB keyboards). But for taking on the road with my KX3 (which is stuck in customs since Monday but should hopefully be with me soon), I'd like to use an ultra-compact Bluetooth keyboard, of the type used with smartphones. I am considering doing this by adding a Bluegiga WT12 Bluetooth module (which has an UART interface that can talk to the AVR). Before I begin on this I'd like to know how well Bluetooth can be expected to work in a RF-filled environment (at up to 10W but with the antenna very close, as in portable operations). It'd be a shame to get everything built only to find out that the Bluetooth connection dies every time I transmit. Has anyone got experience with this and/or other comments/ideas? 73, Thomas M0TRN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Vic, You may say this and it may be true in theory, but if you have a 400Hz filter and are listening on an otherwise clear segment of the band with a single relatively weak signal in the centre of the passband, try widening from 400Hz to 450Hz, in my case switching to the 2.1kHz filter. If you still believe there is no reason for the narrower filter, IMHO you need your hearing checked [no offense intended]. Or try telling the K3 that it's really a 500Hz filter and do the same from 500 to 550Hz, same effect. Personally I have not had any need for anything narrower than 400Hz, although I would love a 200Hz filter if there was room for 6, but my lineup is FM, AM 6kHz, 2.7, 2.1, 400, so I don't have room for any more. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 5 July 2012 16:51, Vic K2VCO k2vco@gmail.com wrote: The ONLY time you need a narrower filter is when there is a signal that is about S9+20 or greater that is outside the DSP bandwidth that you have selected but still within the bandwidth of the selected filter. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 order number to time/date conversion
Guys, There's been a lot of questions about how to convert the order number to a time/date. Re: [Elecraft] CW Key suggestions ?
Jim, Can only second that, I love my Begali Sculpture. It replaced my first paddles, a Bencher, which fades rather in comparison. Incidentally, I took it with me on a trip to Denmark with my FT817, but only that one time, after that I've travelled lighter :) When I get the KX3 I will take that and use the built-in paddles, the Begali Sculpture is really not suitable for portable operations but it is just such a great key you feel like taking it along in spite of its weight. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 25 June 2012 23:38, Jim Lowman jmlow...@sbcglobal.net wrote: The Sculpture is a beautiful piece of machine work, and the feel is a dream. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Ultimate compact KX3 carrying case received -- perfect match for radio accessories!
Sounds great, I ordered one. Will probably get it before the KX3, but according to the Shipping Status page I am immensely close, nobody between the date posted and my order number on the spreadsheet... Wonder if it will hold my LiPol battery. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 20 June 2012 22:19, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: I ordered a Think-tank Strobe Stuff bag from Amazon (about $45). It just arrived, and in my opinion this is the ideal bag for anyone who wants to carry a KX3 and accessories in the smallest possible form- factor. You could even use this bag for Ultra-light HF Pack operation (pedestrian mobile). Just strap it on and deploy the whip out of the top of the bag. There's a way for mic and headphone cables (and a trailing ground wire) to emerge from the bag while it's fully zippered shut. (I also need to write some new firmware that allows you to hold both mic buttons together to switch their function from VFO control to volume control :) The LowePro Edit 140 bag, which I also have, and Rose Kopp's KX3 bag, both have a lot more space when you need it. But sometimes I like to travel really light. Here's a rough dimensional comparison (HWD) of the two camera accessory bags: Edit 140: 6 x 11 x 7.5 (total volume, about 500 in^2) Strobe Stuff: 4 x 9.5 x 4.5 (about 170 in^2) The Strobe Stuff bag is much smaller, but still holds everything you need for a complete station: KX3 MH3 mic backup mini-mic (3 long, hinged, with 3.5 mm plug) KXPD3 keyer paddle ear buds spare set of 8 AA cells (or a 4-cell, 14-V Li-Ion pack) antenna and ground wire (two 25' lengths of Wireman #26 silky) two 1 stainless-steel hex nuts (for tossing wire into a tree) 20-m two-piece telescoping whip (in case there isn't a tree) BNC L BNC-to-binding post adapter (for use with the wires) I put the KX3 and the antenna wire in the main pocket, spare batteries in the small accessory pocket on the bottom of the bag (4 x 4 x 1), and everything else in the large accessory pocket (4 x 10 x 1). The Strobe Stuff bag has a few other features: - The small zipper pocket at the bottom normally holds a rain fly that can be pulled out and secured over the entire bag to keep it dry. But I pulled the rain fly out in favor of the external battery pack or spare AA cells. - At the top of the bag there's a small fabric loop you could use for hanging or carrying, and two smaller loops that could serve as strain relief points for wire. - On the back there's a T-shaped fabric strap with lots of velcro that conceals a hinged strip of very sturdy plastic. This strip reinforces the fabric strap, so the bag can be attached securely to a belt or backpack. The strip also seems to function as a tilt-stand for the bag if deployed at an angle. This probably has some utility when used with camera strobe lights. I'll be testing the bag this weekend (Field Day). 73, Wayne N6KR Yahoo! [Elecraft] [OT] Account of DJ6SI's arrest and maltreatment in Greece for ham operation
Hi all, I was planning to go on holiday to Greece this autumn/fall and operate with my KX3 from an island hotel. But after reading shocking Baldur's story I have changed my mind. I'll find another holiday destination. I'm forwarding this report, from The Daily DX, with the permission of Bernie McClenny. Just in case anyone else has plans to go to Greece and operate, I would suggest you take precautions (e.g. by contacting the Greek authorities in advance, or choose another country to operate from). Bernie asked me to mention that a majority of the SV ops are outraged by this incident, and it should not reflect badly on the Greek Amateur Radio operators. I can only agree that Greek ham operators (and the Greek public in general) are among the friendliest people I've encountered. As for how it reflects on the Greek authorities, judge for yourself. 73, Thomas M0TRN *Source: [The Daily DX] Vol. 16 No. 114 - June 12, 2012. Copyright (C) Berline McClenny, used by permission.* __ DJ6SI – Report on the arrest in Kos, Greece By DJ6SI, Baldur Drobnica Translated by DF3CB, Bernd Koch __ I booked a holiday trip break of one week on the island of Kos in Greece in May this year. I took a HF station with me to give some DXers new band points or even a new country. I could install a G5RV with the permission of the hotel management. After three days, at 01 in the morning, my XYL DL6KCD and I were woken up by an attorney and five police officers in civilian clothes. My wife is suffering from Alzheimer and has three bypasses. I was accused of conducting radio communications without a Greek radio license. The second accusation was that I could also watch other frequencies with my transceiver, a FT-890AT. My objection was rejected that I operate legally on base of the CEPT regulations. The hotel manager printed the CEPT list which is available on the website of the DARC and handed the printout out to the attorney. The paper was ignored, folded and put into the pocket. My transceiver was confiscated together with the power supply and the headphones with the remark that it had to be checked by a specialist. They also tried to confiscate my notebook which I tried to defeat because the notebook was not related to the transceiver that had to be checked. Two mobile phones, cameras and the log book were also confiscated; we were handcuffed and taken to the police station. The handcuffs were so tight that they cut into my flesh and draw blood. I was taken to a hospital where the wound my on hand was treated. In absence of a prison cell, the police wanted to put me into a drunk tank but the attending physician declined that. So I had to spend four hours at the police station sitting on a chair. My hint that I had to see my un-oriented wife was rejected by saying that she is enclosed in the (hotel?) room and being closely guarded from outside. After long discussions I was then escorted by two police officers to visit my wife at the hotel, medicate and dress her. Personal care and showering, was rejected. Back at the police station a protocol was created. Then we were driven to the courthouse. It was now 11AM. I was photographed and fingerprinted in the courtyard of the courthouse. Then we waited again until 4PM under police protection, when I was presented to the attorney who explained me the charges in a two- minute talk: transmitting without permission, having a radio with frequencies other than intended for amateur radio operators and the hindrance in handing out my notebook. I was commissioned to the court for the next day at 12:00. I had to wait until 16:00 until a judge and an attorney came. The judge told me that he had no translator and appointed a new proceeding for the next day at 12:00. When I objected that we had to fly back the next day, he explained: “this is your problem”. Finished. I called the German Embassy in Athens on the morning of the next day and got the notification of the German-speaking lawyer on Kos. We met an hour before the opening hearing. My luck was that he was once interested in amateur radio. I handed him the documents that were kindly printed out by the hotel management had kindly printed for me: CEPT regulations of the DARC and this also in Greek language. The hearing was very noisy and the objection of the attorney, he would turn to the European Court, the judge adjourned the hearing, let me go back to Germany and decreed that the lawyer could attend the next hearing alone. My wife and I had not taken any food for sixteen hours; it was not even offered us. I had no way to sleep for 34 hours. All this as a consequence of an anonymous tip that I had been working without authorization and that I could hear other transmitters. The prosecution referred to a charge on a law dating back to the year 1929! I

Re: [Elecraft] UK Re-seller
If I was to make the journey all the way to WS I'd probably end up picking up something. But I can't see anything wrong with going to look at something in a shop and then buying it off the Internet, I do it all the time, if they charge a lot more than online. If there's a small premium, it's worth it for getting the item immediately, but if they are making a 30% profit or so, no thanks. I don't think there's anything wrong about doing this at all. What I've done successfully in the past though, is go to a store that has something I want, confront them with the online price, and end up getting a good deal from the shop (a bit more than the online price but getting the item straight away). 73, Thomas M0TRN On 30 May 2012 12:32, David Christ radio...@mchsi.com wrote: This is considered bad form in the bicycle world and I assume it is the same in the Ham world as well. Hi all, I also used the 4.51 firmware during the WPX test. Settings as default except THR 10 and SLP 8. I worked a lot of weak stations (BA, JP, VK etc.) near louder ones, from 15m down to 40m, and around a hundred EU stations on 80m. On 15 and 20m with PRE on, on 40m with PRE off and on 80m with ATT on, and with the RF gain mostly turned all the way up except on 40 and 80. Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K3 in the UK?
I'm also going to keep dealing direct with Elecraft, although I'll keep an eye on the prices from WS. But think about it this way, Elecraft starting to have regional distributors around the world is enabling them to grow much bigger because they can reach a more mainstream market segment who are not comfortable with buying online from abroad. For those who have access to a Linux command line with Perl installed you can do the conversion in this oneliner: Just insert the first 8 digits of your order number (with the dash removed) instead of the example of 22084064. E.g. if your order number was 2209-4362-1234 you would use 22094362. Then run: perl -e 'use POSIX qw(strftime); print strftime(%a, %d %b %Y %T %z\n, gmtime(22084064*60));' The output will be in UTC and look like this: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 03:44:00 + 73, Thomas M0TRN On 25 May 2012 05:31, Edward R. Hi Barry, You might want to try a different HDMI cable with better shielding, like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Quad-Shielded-High-Speed-Cable/dp/B002C1BHIO I haven't tried it myself but they claim it's quad shielded.. [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers
Hi, I like to alternate between operating with headset and speakers and find the K3's built-in speaker inadequate (plus I want stereo). So I purchased a pair of Audioengine A2 speakers (black, and with the corresponding desk stands, wonderful little speakers I must say and they look GREAT next to the K3 - judge for yourself: http://goo.gl/KErTo) Now the problem is that I have been running with AGC=LOW since it gives me a comfortable range in the headset. The speakers have a volume control on the back, so I thought I could adjust that to get a volume that was similar in the headset. The problem is that with a low enough AF volume setting on the K3 that the headset isn't blasting my ears out, and the speakers volume set to give a similar level to that of the headphones (about 66% of their max), the speakers give a very noticable very low frequency bassy click once a second anytime the K3 is turned on. It's like thump, thump, thump at one second intervals. This is loud enough to be noticeable when the speakers and the headphones are at about the same level for the real audio. If I turn the speakers' gain down and turn the K3's AF knob up, I get FB loud enough audio without hearing this problem, but with a low enough volume in the headset for it to be comfortable, I have to turn the speakers up where the thump gets noticable to get rid of it again. I'm powering my K3 from a car battery that is in turn hooked up to a smart charger. This has never caused me any problems in the past, but it would seem that this artifact comes from the smart charger somehow, as soon as I disconnect it the problem goes away and I can have the speaker volume all the way up to max without hearing it. As I said I've never had any audio (or other) problems before from having that battery charger connected. Any suggestions for what to try next would be appreciated. 73, Thomas M0TRN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers
Hi Art, I totally have that problem as well, but I was more bothered by the other one for now so that's why I wrote about it. It would be amazingly nice if you could have the MON level track the AF level. In fact, it would be a killer feature. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 15 May 2012 22:41, Arthur Burke aburk...@gmail.com wrote: My speaker approach was a pair of formerly rear speakers in a surround sound system - SONY in this case. Having stereo speakers provides (most of the time) the same effect as stereo headphones - when the sub-rx is on, DX from the left side and pileup from the right side - although it's easier to work through the pileup with phones. My problem is not with the speaker/phone volume, but with the monitor (sidetone) volume. When it's set more-or-less normally for speaker use, it's much too loud for use with the cans on. My daily (and therefore also for DX) logging program is DXLabs. Commander provides a host of User Defined Controls - one of which I use to alter the monitor level - significantly lowering it before slapping on the headphones. Then, the second push, when I'm finished, restores MON to the old level. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers
Hi Dwayne, I already use the macros, I have PF2 set to toggle SPKR+PH on/off so I can turn the speakers off when I'm wearing the headset (PF1 is set to enable/disable ESSB, and could be considered a spare since I hardly ever use ESSB). But the problem is that in CW I like to operate with both speakers+headset, so I can put the headset on if I hear something interesting and want to copy it better (over the noise of the linear and other ambient noise). For stronger signals, I just have the QSO with the speakers and not the headset. Of course for SSB I need to wear the headset if I don't have the desk mic out, but then SSB is only about 10-20% of my QSO's. When I get my desk mike out again, I think I will reprogram PF1 to switch between the front mic/headset as you suggest. Actually if I can find a solution to the speaker noise problem, I think everything will be ok. The only other thing is what Arthur mentioned and I elaborated on, the MON level. It is hard to send CW if the MON tone is too low, and I adjust the volume up/down to accommodate the situation (ambient noise) when I'm on the speakers, but MON doesn't follow. So if MON could be made to track AF, I think I would have close to the perfect setup for my operating style! 73, Thomas M0TRN On 16 May 2012 00:21, Dwayne Rohmer djcaroh...@ntin.net wrote: Thomas, You might want to consider using a macro to adjust the monitor level? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] New order, do I need a KAT3
Hi Tony, I don't have the ATU in my K3 and I am quite happy without it. I have mostly resonant antennas (2.0:1 on the bands I use without ATU) and do have a manual external tuner that I can put in for the other bands. If you are using a remote ATU at the antenna feed point there's no need to have the KAT3 as long as the SWR seen at the rig stays below 2.0:1 (ideally 1.5:1), beyond that the K3 protection circuitry scales back the power. If you're planning to use the K3 for portable operations then getting the ATU is probably a good idea. Then you can just hook up any wire antenna, possibly fed with balanced feeder and a balun, and you'll probably be able to get a good match on all bands. For that reason, I'm getting the ATU in my KX3, but I don't think I'll add it to my K3. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 14 May 2012 04:46, Tony BenBrahim tony.benbra...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, I am ordering a K3 and was wondering if I need a KAT3, given that I will be running an auto tuner at the anternna feed point? Re: [Elecraft] New K3 Firmware: Improved AGC (great for pile-ups as well as general operation)
Wayne, It's hard for me to do a before/after side by side comparison since I only have one K3 and the band conditions change all the time, but after using the 4.51 firmware for a couple of days, it seems to me that APF is maybe slightly less effective than it was before. Maybe it's because the overall clarity of the weak signals is generally improved, or else the AGC changes somehow interact with the APF in a detrimental way? I'm generally using the 400Hz filter for CW and adjust the passband down to about 250Hz for best readability on weak signals, engaging APF at that setting previously made most weak signals much louder, now it seems to make that much difference only on a smaller subset of signals and only when the band is relatively quiet. It could well be down to random band condition changes before and after the upgrade, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 14 May 2012 05:14, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: K3 beta-test firmware revision 4.51 (with DSP rev. 2.76) is now available. The combination of these changes can greatly improve signal clarity in pile-ups and other high-noise or dense-signal situations. Many operators have also reported improved effectiveness of noise blanking. With this release, NR and Auto-Notch can be used at all of the new threshold settings. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM receive question
Hi Stefan, You can listen to AM (in AM/AM-S) mode with the 2.7kHz filter FB. But the wider rx that the 6kHz filter provides gives a very noticeable improvement in audio on the broadcast stations. My K3 (bought second hand) came with 2.7kHz filter and no general coverage RX filter, since I am also interested in SWL I ordered both the 6kHz AM filter and the general coverage filter, I have to say it makes a huge difference for AM listening with those two installed (obviously the further you get away from the ham bands, the greater the difference for RX sensitivity). Listening to talk radio with the stock 2.7kHz filter is tolerable, but after installing the wider one I find myself listening a lot more to the shortwave broadcast stations. Needless to say the audio is great, I'd say acceptable from the built-in speaker but with my added Audioengine A2 desktop speakers it makes for a classy listening experience. But try with the stock filter and judge for yourself, you can always order the wider filter later, installing it is easy. Depending on how much of a priority shortwave listening is to you, you may or may not decide to get it, it's perfectly acceptable quality in AM-S mode with the 2.7kHz filter for voice transmissions. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 14 May 2012 20:53, kf4ueo sa_sch...@me.com wrote: I am contemplating the purchase of a K3 and want to SWL also. The only way they will come anywhere close to the KX3 performance is by pirating large portions of the KX3 hardware design and firmware. If that's the case I hope they don't succeed. Re: [Elecraft] [QRP-L] The Chinese KX3
Jim, What exactly is absurd about the add on costs that Elecraft charges, in your opinion ??? That's the statement that sticks out to me as being absurd in your mail. You buy the accessories you want/need and add it up. The total KX3 price after doing that doesn't seem absurd to me. Not extremely cheap either, I'd agree, but most certainly not absurdly expensive. There are Chinese knock-offs of many product categories. Generally, the Chinese versions are reasonable value for money but the equation generally does include a much lower build quality and feature set and a much lower support level. To take the Wouxuns for example, they are great rigs for the price, but the more expensive ones from Yaewoodcom do have a definitive edge on quality and how well they are thought out. It's just questionable if they are worth paying so much extra for, and personally I'm happy with my Wouxun. But for something as primary to my ham operating as my main portable HF rig, I won't settle for such a compromise. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 13 April 2012 21:55, James Rodenkirch rodenkirch_...@msn.com wrote: If - IF - they can produce a similar product at a reduced cost, including the absurdity of the current add on costs that Elecraft charges, good for them! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter questions
Dave, 1. I prefer the 2.1 filter for SSB, 1.8 can potentially give a slight edge when the bands are extremely crowded, but generally speaking I use the 2.7 and narrow down to 2.1 if there is much QRM, remember that with the DSP you can go as low as you want, so it only makes a real difference if the interfering signal is way stronger than the one you want to copy. So in the end I swapped my 1.8kHz filter for an extra 500Hz filter for the sub receiver. 2. I haven't tried the 2.8kHz 8-pole filter, it has sharper edges than the 2.7k one and some people prefer it. I have the 6kHz 8-pole filter as well (for ESSB/SWL broadcast listening) and if the transmitting station is using a wide TX filter for SSB it sounds better with that in. Again, the DSP does a lot of the work so I don't think there is that much difference between the 2.7 and 2.8 filters, if I was to buy a new rig I'd probably opt for the 2.8 one, but not a strong preference. I think the main difference is slightly sharper edges on TX, and negligible on RX. 3. I have found the 400Hz filter perfectly adequate for CW and digimodes. A 1kHz filter would be much more useful, and I will probably get it eventually, but the 250Hz filter doesn't seem that useful to me. 400Hz gives enough of a context to make a weak CW signal stand out particularly when APF filter is on. For digimodes, I've copied a few PSK31 signals that I could not copy with 400Hz because it was drowned out by a very strong signal elsewhere in the passband, but I've never had this happen with a signal that was less than 400Hz away, remember you can adjust the width and center frequency independently and the K3 chooses the best crystal filter for the job, so you can move the rx window left or right to avoid any interfering strong signal close to the one you want to copy. All in all I'm very satisfied with my filter lineup which is: Main RX: FL1 - None yet (KFL3B-FM 13kHz FM filter on order, for operating FM on 10m and with transverters in the future) FL2 - KFL3A-6K (for AM/ESSB receive (and rarely used ESSB TX)) FL3 - 2.7kHz 5-pole filter FL4 - KFL3A-2.1 (for SSB and digimodes) FL5 - KFL3A-400 (for CW and digimodes) Sub RX: FL1 - None FL2 - None FL3 - 2.7kHz 5-pole filter FL4 - None FL5 - KFL3A-400 I wish I had room for 1 more filter, so I could have the 1kHz filter for use with wider digimodes and a wider PSK31 passband. Most of the time for PSK31 it is not necessary to go down to the 400Hz filter to copy the weakest signals, but 1kHz would be better when the bands are crowded. I don't think a 250 or 200Hz would confer any real advantage. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 27 March 2012 01:48, Dave (K7DRT) dtull...@earthlink.net wrote: I am still studying the K3 and the various options I use. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter questions
I haven't looked at the spec for the 1.8 filter but I second what Dave was saying, the specified filter bandwidths are (I think) -3dB and the curve is obviously not completely straight down, so there is still signals outside the passband. I have told my K3 that the 400Hz CW filters are really 500Hz, which means the 2.1kHz filter only kicks in when I move above 500Hz, which allows me a slightly wider passband e.g. when calling CQ, this works extremely well for me, and from looking at the waterfall the extra 50Hz on each side are getting through the filter well enough. I'm sure operating the 1.8kHz filter as a 2.1 one would work as well, although I never tried it myself, it might actually be a better setup than the 2.1 filter for contest use. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 27 March 2012 19:12, k.i...@comcast.net wrote: I am pretty sure the DSP filter is effective only if it is narrower than the roofing filter. To get this combination of DSP=2.1 and crystal=1.8, one has to install the 1.8 filter as if it were a 2.1, so it switches in at DSP=2.1. This installation setup is most easily done using the K3 Utility. In practice, normalize, then use high cut until the filter switches in. To me, the audio sounds best using that technique. WPX SSB is traditionally the worst-case QRM-fest, and the 1.8 filter was just the ticket for dealing with it. That will be my intent, anyway (objectivity). This email is a first cut. Read on. My personal opinion is that this is the coolest amateur transceiver ever designed, built, or dreamed of. Perfect size, perfect weight, VERY respectable performance. You can *really* take the KX3 with you, and you’ll really want to. Mine’s going everywhere with me, including the workplace! I know my engineering staff will demand to see how Wayne and crew fit it all in, and how well the KX3 works. After one day using this unit, I've reached the conclusion that the KX3 is basically ready for initial production. As is usual for a 'young' rig from Elecraft, firmware is still a work in progress. This should be no surprise to anyone on this list. The hardware is at near-100% shape, IMHO. There are a few minor issues - mostly features not yet implemented. And I mean minor. If I weren't an engineering manager in the consumer products industry I would not have noticed any of them. The electronics seems solid, and I've done a bit of lab testing for MDS and selectivity. Most of my testing has been on the air though. My lab testing shows MDS better than -136 dBm, but my signal generator can't extend any lower. No problems with rejecting out of band signals (away from the roofing filter's coverage). On the air: I've had about fifteen CW QSOs, using between 1 and 12 Watts output power. The antenna is a homebrew multi-band vertical, ground mounted. Four of these Qs were on battery power. No differences were found between operating on external and internal power, except for the output power limitations due to batteries. One Q was with an extremely weak QRP station in New Mexico. The APF helped with this, to the point that I could not have pulled him out without the feature. With APF engaged, his signal was 539 with rapid fades to 319. He was running 0.5W and I was running 3 W. Great ragchew, with very few repeats. Except for Navy-Marine Corps MARS, I'm mostly a CW op. Several SSB contacts went successfully after a false start: I had to finagle the MH3's input connection a bit (a virgin socket seating issue). I set the MIC and CMP values by listening on a second receiver and built in MONitor, giving MIC=18 and CMP=10 as the best combination. Audio reports using the MH3 and this setting were excellent - clear as a bell and good presence”. Output using the internal speaker is adequate, though not amazingly loud. Some of that is probably my 55 year old ears and too many rock concerts when I was younger. The frequency response seems relatively flat and lows are surprisingly well-represented. Distortion is low ( 2% THD the way I hear it). The FOC and NA contests run this weekend were an interesting environment for first-time ops on the KX3. Lots of strong signals, many in excess of S9+25. A majority of the QSOs mentioned above were near strong signals and with the roofing filter in place I had pretty good luck ignoring the big guns while working weak signals. I have to admit this is completely subjective, however years of experience with the K3 also tells me that the KX3 has similar characteristics in this regard. The best example from on-air testing was the NM CW station I mentioned above. His signal was marginal, meaning the APF was essential for pulling him out of the band noise. At the same time, 3 to 4 KHz up was one of those big guns thumping away. I could even hear key clicks from the contester, but only a tiny amount of blocking from his signal on the KX3. That's what I mean by similar to the K3. It's not identical though. I found instances where a little bit of a strong station's signal was near- or in-band, and as you would expect some pretty severe blocking occurred. I'd recommend everyone make sure they have the roofing filter on the essentials list for purchase. In many ways the roofer makes the KX3 what it was meant to be. One thing

Re: [Elecraft] KX3- laptops for I/Q
Brian, Some laptops are good, some are bad. This varies even between laptops even with the same chipset, because the support chips differ. I've found that of all the laptops I've tried, only a HP 8440 had a really good chipset for SDR sampling up to 92kHz. Consider getting an external USB soundcard like the E-MU 0202, which works great on any laptop, or even the SDR Widget (still in the process of building mine, but the performance data is amazing even at 192kHz, beating any built-in or external sound cards on the market for this application!) You probably won't get any decent 192kHz sampling in any laptop. To get the noise level acceptable at this sampling rate, very careful design considerations have to go into it, which would conflict with the space constraints etc. of a laptop. I guess I can start haunting the computer re-builders for an oldie with the guts and a slot and PCMCIA soundcard I want and hope to keep it going. [Elecraft] [K3] Remote control protocol documentation
Hi Elecraft list, I have read about the new K3 remote protocol (that's supported natively in the latest firmwares of the K3), and I want to implement my own remote control solution. However I haven't been able to find any documentation on the remote protocol anywhere (implemented in Linux with software on a Beagleboard acting as the backend to a GTK+ frontend emulating the user interface on another machine in the network). Does anyone know if this documentation exists, and if not, when it will be released? Apologies if there is an early beta/draft version of the protocol documentation somewhere and I've missed it. If it's not out there, can someone in the know provide me with a copy? 73, Thomas M0TRN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Remote control protocol documentation
Don, I was under the impression that a new protocol had been implemented in the firmware, providing better performance and features for remote control applications compared to the existing command set from the K3 Programmer's Reference. The approach of continuously polling all values and attempting to emulate panel key presses by translating them into the corresponding commands is not very efficient for this purpose, and it's not possible to achieve 100% synchronization and correct mapping of keys to functions. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 30 January 2012 13:34, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Thomas, If you are referring to the recent support for RemoteRig, the description of that function can be found at the Elecraft website - search on RemoteRig. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Remote control protocol documentation
So the new REMOTE mode of the K3 uses the normal K3 commands from the Programmer's Reference to talk to the remote K3? I was sure I'd seen somewhere that a better protocol had been devised for this. Can anyone with such a setup verify if that's the case, possibly by snooping on the link? This is not directly related to RemoteRig, as far as I understand it will work by hooking up any 2 K3's with, for example, a null-modem cable or two serial ports on a PC virtually connected together. 73, Thomas On 30 January 2012 13:48, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: There is no new protocol that I am aware of, just the RemoteRig support implementation. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/30/2012 8:37 AM, Thomas Horsten wrote: Don, I was under the impression that a new protocol had been implemented in the firmware, providing better performance and features for remote control applications compared to the existing command set from the K3 Programmer's Reference. Re: [Elecraft] K3 won't PTT in data...
Mike, While in data mode, press Menu, dial to MIC SEL, ensure it's set to Line In not RPL or FPL (right or front panel), now the mic should definitely not be live and if it is (and triggers VOX), you have a problem with your rig and it needs to be fixed before you use data modes again. The selection is remembered separately for the DATA modes and SSB. No matter how loud I scream into the microphone I cannot activate VOX whilst in data mode. If the mic was live in data mode it would be appalling, you'd be putting background noise splatter in the PSK31 passband, for example! 73, Thomas On 26 January 2012 19:15, Mike n...@nf4l.com wrote: Data|AFSK A uses SSB mode internally, so the mic is live, I suppose. Re: [Elecraft] K3 spurious radiation?
From the SoftRock Lite build guidehttp://www.wb5rvz.com/sdr/sr_lite_ii/02_lo.htm - I guess this could explain what we're seeing: Sub-harmonic Sampling Alan, G4ZFQ points out that on the 30m, 20m, 15m receivers, the Local Oscillator produces a signal that is 4/3 times the desired center frequency as opposed to the 4x the center frequency output for the lower band models. Subharmonic works like this:- The LO outputs a 13.5MHz signl that goes to the dividers /4, resulting in 1 3.375MHz square wave ( rich in odd harmonics) being fed to the mixer. At the mixer, a strong 3rd harmonic is present on the clock inputs, along with the fundamental of 3.375 MHz. The 3.375 fundamental multiplied by 3 yields the third harmonic of 10.125MHZ. The Bandpass filter (BPF) performs the essential function of severely attenuating any signals centered around the 3.375MHz fundamental frequency and first harmonmic, but allows 30m signals centering around the third harmonic of the 3.375MHz LO output. The result is that the mixer is dealing with signals in the passband, centering on 10.125MHz, as though the dividers were passing a fundamental frequency of 10.125 to the mixer. BPFs are all that stop Softrocks from working on unwanted frequencies 73, Thomas M0TRN On 24 January 2012 13:08, John/K8AZT k8azt...@sbcglobal.net wrote: I have not been monitoring this mail list much recently so I apologize if this subject has been discussed previously. Re: [Elecraft] K3 spurious radiation?
Hi John, I had this happen to me a few days ago where I was calling CQ on 7.015 and was spotted on 14.0614 by Tim KQ8M's skimmer. I emailed KQ8M to ask him if there was a problem with his skimmer. He replied that he wouldn't rule out that the problem was in his Rx setup, but it was tuned to 20m. Now I was running through the linear and an ATU, and I can't see any logical relationship between the two frequencies, so I'm leaning to the theory that his receiver was the culprit, although I did find it very strange. I think a lot of RBN skimmers use SoftRock receivers, and I'm guessing that if his VFO was tuned to 14.050 using the 2nd harmonic of a 7.025 fundamental, it would kind of fit, but I'm still surprised that my 300W signal to an inverted V was 6dB over the noise on the wrong band in Ohio, 3800 miles away on the other side of the Atlantic... I'm not sure exactly because I don't know what receiver he was using, but it did have me puzzled and when I saw John's post I thought I'd mention it.
