[Elecraft] K3 vs KX3 AFX
The KX3 DSP has a special effects (AFX) mode by which higher tones go to one ear while lower tones go to the other. The K3 does not. Is there a reason why the K3 can not have this choice? [Elecraft] K3: listening to both rcvrs
for what it may be worth... For my pair-of-K2's in SO2R, I have routed the audio in such a way that I have a balance control with the audio from the two radios. I call it a mixing control. I find that optimum is achieved when the full strength audio is in one ear, and that same audio is present, but weak in the other ear. I reason that when the audio goes to one ear only, the content must get to the other hemisphere of the brain within brain circuitry. When it is routed to both ears, now both hemispheres get the information for interpretation at the same time. Making it strong in one ear and weak in the other, reversed for the other channel, lets me know which rcvr I am hearing, while brain interpretation is at full speed. and so, Wayne... I think that there must be a firmware way either by routing to a panel pot, or probably more simply in a menu, by which the operator can select either complete channel isolation, or both channels to both ears, but with one ear X DB down from the other. (I can't say how much down is best, but I find that it is enough when I can barely notice it. All of a sudden copy is MUCH easier). Give it a thought because of the above, I, at least, am quite convinced after a lot of usage with a pair of K2's in SO2R, that is a much better arrangement for copying CW from the two channels. with much appreciation for this fine radio, 73, Fd - KT5X K2 # 0700 K3 # 0144___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KRX3
My KRX3 kit arrived this weekend, and built it yesterday. Installing it took quite a few hours, but instructions were clear and it installed without any issues. Draping small coax links were annoying as they have to be plugged in to the module, then find a residence that doesn't prevent the module from dropping down and plugging in. I did find two small errata items to report, but nothing that would prevent following directions so to speak. The sub receiver worked right off. there are firmware items that one must take care of before it is going to respond, but instructions are clear. Think through the filters you will want as taking it apart to install new filters in either the sub receiver or the main receiver is more work than you will prefer to do. However, I am seeing posts that suggest many owners still think that need a roofing filter as narrow as the IF DSP which I doubt very much. I suspect some folks are filling up their slots when it is very much unnecessary. the difference between a 500 and a 200 cycle roofing filter at a spacing of 2 khz is nil, at a spacing of 1 khz is almost undetectable. At a spacing of 500 hz, only a signal that is 40 db over nine is effected, and even that one, if the signal has clicks which it probably does, the narrow roofing filter isn't going to make any difference. The diversity is fine. all other behaviors that I had time and circumstance to explore was good, in fact, very good. I liked how I could switch to the sub and indepdently control all parameters using the same knobs and buttons. I did find that when linked if I tuned the frequency change seemed to stutter. this may have something to do with filters not being matched. I also noticed that when linked if I used the auto-tune feature, the main receiver auto-tuned but the sub receiver did not. also there is the statement that you need firmware version 2.11 etc, and for me at least, that firmware was no where to be found. I wound up downloading and using beta firmware 2.15. I am sure many other ordered sub receivers are going to be landing and come up very soon. 73, Fred - kt5x K2 # 0700 K3 # 0144 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. What can be done with the AGC is simply marvelous. I have put the THR and the SLP on the PF buttons for now. BUT... [Elecraft] K3 new firmware release 1.58
GREAT SCOTT !!! the new version of the narrow filter; at the noise floor the filter is half the width it was before as seen in spectrogram. Not only that, the top of this new filter, even at 50 cycles wide, is FLAT topped. I imagine that is why it doesn't ring, and it doesn't. I listened to a signal that was 25 DB over nine, coming from the whistle clean K3 of W7QC, and then of an S-1 DX station, which once tuned in seemed S-9, both were essentially without ringing. 73, FD - kt5x K2 # 0700 K3 # 0144 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and the Heil HC4 mic ???
First, understand, I don't operate SSB much, and not familiar with idiosyncracies of mics. I don't understand the need for bias, etc... Trying to establish the K3 and a mic. The MH2 works just fine off the K3 front panel jack. It seems to want FP.Lo with BIAS. I have run a mic line to the back of the radio. I found in the menu the selection, rP and switched to it. An old Electrovoice desk mic requires rP.Hi but works, proving the rear panel jack, menu settings, and the new line. I have a very old Heil headset and boom mic with an HC4 element. Plugged into this line I can not get the radio to respond to the HC4. I can run through the VOX settings to maximum sensitivity, I can try Hi or Lo, ... nothing. I put a DMM across the mic, it reads inconsistent, don't know what it should read, and also find that the Electrovoice reads open, so i guess not going to see anything that way. Do I need to do something special to make the Heil HC4 respond? Is there a way i can prove the HC4 is functioning properly? 73, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and spectrogram: SSB
Put the K3 on spectrogram today. As expected the CW filters are delightfully clean. Now, the SSB filters. This was with 2.7 five pole filter. DSP set at 2.7 khz, the filter is for all intents, PERFECT. Steep sides, very steep, and absolutely level and flat top from one side to the other. You could see no difference whatever between USB and LSB plots. It is by far the best plot of SSB filter I have ever put on spectrogram. When it gets interesting, is when you narrow it up. When you dial the width narrower, from 2.7 to, say, 2.1, it narrows from both ends. More likely want to put it in Hi cut / Lo cut mode for SSB, and narrow it up by lowering only the side on which there is QRM that is causing you to want a narrower filter in the first place. 73, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and spectrogram: dual passband
The dual passband on spectrogram was most informative. It turns out my ear had little idea what was going on. I have the 2.7 khz and the 500 khz (but the radio is set to 600 khz). I think this function will act differently with different filters on board. Here is what happens. When one puts on dual passband, the inner passband that is at full sensitivity is fixed at the 600 hz of the narrower roofing filter. That PB does not change with any PB tuning adjustments. The outside PB is about 25 DB down. For me, that is too much!!! I would rather this be down more like 15 DB. At 25 DB down, I can hear there are stations outside the inner PB, but I can not copy them at the same time as the station in the center. The outer PB is tipped, that is, the high frequency side of the inner filter is five to ten DB stronger than the low side. Seems like it ought to be in balance. PB shift or PB Hi / Lo cut, both do exactly the same thing when in dual PB mode. They narrow up the outer filter, down to the inner filter at the narrowest. They do not, for example, I might have thought the in HI /Lo mode, you might be able to chop off the upper or lower context independently, but you can not. 73, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and Yaesu amp - report
Built up a cable to link the ACC jack of the K3, and spefically, Band0-3, mapped to Band Data A-D on my Yaesu FL7000 auto-tune, auto-band change amplifier. The KIO needs to be placed in NOR, which is its default. The K3 switches the FL7000 flawlessly. Since I have not seen anything on this posted, the success may be of interest to others. Thank you to Joe, W4TV, who assured me that this should work without further ado, and it did. The TX INHibit of the Yaesu and that of the K3 are in reverse from one another. The Yaesu switches to ground when it is ready. The K3 expects being grounded to mean don't transmit. I think a simple transistor circuit using power from the 13.5 volt source on the Yaesu amp's lines could be done to accomplish this. I have heard that it is sufficient and simple enough to instruct the K3 to do a PTT delay of 5 or 10 ms, but I can not see how to do that. According to a letter I have from Yaesu, the FL7000 grounds its TX INH line when it is ready for the exciter to transmit. That which sets these radios apart is their relative immunity to blocking and IMD. That's a pleasure! Their clean transmitting signal is a matter of pride for the operator. A few suggestions to the relatively less experienced contesters; * compare yourself only to yourself and have fun. Even the last place finisher in a marathon has a smile on their face! * I can not speak for everyone else, but I can copy 60 wpm, and most QSO's are going to occur above 28 wpm. Practice! * I never, ever, reduce the passband below about 900 cycles. I want to hear what's going on all around me, and i more or less copy all of them at once * If the radio isn't being jammed by IMD/blocking I won't have any trouble copying both signals that are 50 cycles apart. [Elecraft] K2's on field day...
W5YA will be active for the 8th consecutive year from Chama, New Mexico, at 9,000 feet altitude. We will be 1B2 QRP using K2 # 0700. If the bands die, we will be fly fishing ;-) Hope to work you. Have a great time! 72, Fred'n'Steve KT5X WD9FJL ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Headphone output levels on the K2?
Some headfones have MUCH more gain with the K2 than others. the Kenwood HS-5 is a low impedance phone. I put it on the speaker jack. with that, I have to turn the AF gain down to almost 8 o'clock and the RF gain down to about 10 o'clock to keep from blowing my head off with volume. the HS-5 is monoaural as it comes form the manufacturer. it came with a 1/4 inch jack. Change it to an 1/8 inch monoaural, and it will plug right in to the speaker jack on the back of the K2. I reqired mine to stereo which can easily be done by popping the back off the the headfones. The cable is already three wire, and simply requires moving one lead in the can to make it stereo. If used with just a K2, however, this modification is not necessary. 72, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] #1 K2 improvement...
the K2 does not have two rcvrs for split operation. therefore, when working a DX-pedition, one pushes and holds the REV button to listen in on the pile-up, but can't do it well because the other VFO has the same narrow settings as the VFO listening to the DX station. (my) #1 K2 change to make it MUCH more usable is: firmware change such that separate XTAL and DSP filter settings follow with the chosen VFO. 73, Fred - KT5X ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KIO2 and serial keying
I use N1MM contest logging program. At present, I communicate between the PC and the K2 with its KIO2 using a serial cable, and I key the K2 using a parallel cable with Tom's (N0SS) keyer built into the parallel cable housing. With parallel ports absent from many laptops, and in the interest of fewer cables... My question(s): The KIO2 uses pin 2 and pin 3 for RXD and TXD communication with the radio, and pin 5 for the ground connection. 1) Can I use pin 7, on the KIO2 labeled RF but appears that nothing is connected to it, to drive transistor keying of the radio instead of the parallel port? 2) Will N1MM recognize the same com port for keying that it is using to talk to the radio? 73, Fred - kt5x K2 # 0700 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] ultracapacitor (was hammcom power supply)
Perhaps an engineer on the list can help with this... I am fascinated by the HammCom powersupply using an ultracapacitor (or supercapacitor) to deal with intermitten power demand of CW. It must be a simple task to add such a thing to, say, an Astron RS12 power supply so that it would handle the CW demands of a KPA-100 in CW or SSB mode. Used Astron RS12 are all over eBay for in the order of twenty dollars. Exactly how might this be done??? 73, Fred kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
