Re: [Elecraft] Lightning concerns: Was: K4 Remote: My QTH vs. a friend's, many miles to the north

2024-05-05 Thread Mike Fatchett W0MU
Lightning is like wildfires which burn some houses or land but not
others.  There is no rhyme or reason why some devices are not damaged
and other are.  I suspect that most items were damaged but not made
inoperable.

Couldn't the argument be made that the computer or USB hub should do
more and at what cost?

You are quite lucky that your entire shack was not destroyed.

I don't believe Elecraft should be blamed here, nor do I believe they
need to do anything.  There is no preponderance of data that shows the
Elecraft interface is more or less susceptible to this damage.

My power supplied failed and produced an over voltage situation which
damaged my K3.  It it the fault of the PS maker or Elecraft?

These situations are why many of us have Insurance that cover these
events.  This coverage could be a homeowners policy or policies similar
to the ARRL insurance program.  These coverage's may or may not be
available to everyone however.

It is the station owner that is responsible for lightning protection
(or other environmental risks); not Elecraft or most any product
vendor of any type.  To require more, would cost more (for the
hardware and for the liability risk that the company would have to
endure).

The area/s missed in the protective system design, can be demonstrated
by a nearby or direct hit (induced voltages and current can be almost
as damaging); as you already found (and it's EASY to miss an entry
point, no blame intended).

The ARRL has a good amount of simplified how-to in the book "Grounding
and Bonding" but several readings may still be needed for
understanding the content.  There are other good resources (Motorola
has one, so does the cell phone industry; each is excellent but best
used to induce sleep, they are intense and technical and reference
various applicable laws).

It's not all about lightning but static dissipation as an energy
source.  That static source may also be dust, wind, snow, or rain
(yes, water).  Diverting that charge OUTSIDE the building (shack) to
GROUND is the basic plan but it must also include EVERY entry point
(cable TV, phone, DSL, antenna, rotor, control cables for antennas,
mast, satellite dishes and tower).

Using several ground rods as part of a system is common BUT they must
all be bonded to each other AND to the one common safety ground of the
building (US and other countries require this, by law).  Use of water
pipes is no longer code, in the US (because PEX and PVC are common,
defeating ability to take to ground).

From your description Jorge, it sounds like you did it correctly, but
missed an entry point.  Now you'll have to replace parts, sadly.

Let's limit any more, to Elecraft specific topics.  This one has
wandered well afield of Elecraft.

"Last week I experienced a lightning strike"

That sounds a lot like a direct discharge into the shack, so I am
responding to your comment, if that is not correct, please help me
understand what actually happened...

Lightening is strange, it can take out one piece of equipment, and not
touch another...  It all depends on how your shack is grounded, and how
it is bonded.  When grounding commercial equipment, even the path the
wire takes is important...  Curves, straight line runs, etc...

What sort of ground system are you using, and what sort of lightening
protection did you have in place at the time of the lightening event?

Take a look at:

https://www.nk7z.net/building-a-coax-entry-panel/

That is my entry panel.  I am slowly building a ground ring around the
house...  Why?  Because only I can build a system to help reduce the
chances of lightening taking out something in my environment. It is
after all my home, and my environment, so I can not, and do not, hold
Elecraft responsible for things they can not control. Elecraft,

If a KPA500 is in standby, can it be used to determine power output from

No. It occurs after the KPA switches from STBY to OPER. With the KPA

Perhaps a transmit gain calibration is in order.   I use

Good to know. I'll try that myself. in face, I have an RS232-logic-level

[Elecraft] KAT500 no PC comms

2024-03-10 Thread Mike Dodd
Elecraft is taking a l_o_n_g time to repair the USB port on my K4d, so I
bought a used K3 (non-s) as a backup rig. It works fine, and interfaces
correctly with my KPA500 and KAT500. (The KAT is already configured for
all frequency steps on all bands, and I can hear the KAT relays click
when I change bands.)

But the KAT Utility doesn't connect to the KAT.

I'm using the same Computer interface cable plugged into the same USB
port on the PC. Windows Device manager says it's working.

With a K4, does the KAT communicate with the PC via the K4's USB
connection, which he K3 doesn't have?

Hello Pete,

This happens to my K3S regularly. After it spent WAY too much time back at the
mother ship three years ago without them being able to reproduce the fault (RSA
#10260, in case Keith is reading this), I was finally able to narrow down the
cause.

I can reproduce the fault by going from FL2 to FL3, FL3 to FL4 or by exiting
the QRQ mode. This makes me think it may be a firmware problem. I'm running
v5.67, the most recent version. I can't figure out how to force a load of an
earlier version to see if that cures the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? I can't be the only one.

Today I started seeing this in my K3 driving a KPA-1500. It only needs around
30-34 watts to drive it to full power on CW, but when I set the K3's power to
that, and everything looks fine, occasionally the K3 displays Fault 6 on its
panel and causes the KPA-1500 to fault, displaying 65 watts input on the amp's
display and well over 1500 watts on the power bargraph.

I can't find any reference to Fault 6 in the manual for the K3 - can anyone
clue me in? Is something dying in the K3?

Very interesting. I'm sure I could program something similar, but given
how infrequently I need to re-train my KAT500, I think I'll stick with
my frequency-step spreadsheet and a couple of K-Pod macros.

What button is that, Andy? I set up a spreadsheet that shows the

KAT500 and the TUNE switch on the K4.

[Elecraft] K2 Sidetone help

2023-10-28 Thread Mike Furrey
Hi All!A few months ago I acquired a used K2, s/n 13xx, firmware 2.04, and the
sidetone setting is U8-2 but I do not have any sidetone and no matter which
hoop I jump through in the menu system, I cannot get the sidetone to function.
The radio would not let me make the change to U6-25 no matter what I did.  I
made a couple of CW Qs but I listened to the sidetone on an external keyer. I
have also made a few SSB Qs today during the CQWW SSB contest, all QRP. All
aspects of this radio performs as they should ... except for the sidetone.

From all the paper work, I am the forth owner of this radio and I don't think
any of the previous owners ever operated CW. The rig did have a defective key
jack that I replaced. It does appear that this radio has had all the updates
performed. So, I am at a loss ... I have dog-eared the manual and have searched
the mail archives for clues and procedures to enable the sidetone but I have
yet to be successful.

I am hoping for a few suggestions/hints before I go deep into it with the test
equipment.
Many Thanks, Mike WA5POK - owner of thee K3s and now this K2

My CM500 mic is plugged into the rear mic jack. I turned on the 14dB

Re: [Elecraft] Manual For KX2 S/N 01888?

2023-07-05 Thread Mike Morrow
The manual currently available at Elecraft.com will be completely applicable to
your KX2, especially after you upgrade the firmware to MCP 3.02, DSP 1.52.

The only hardware mod that there has been in seven years is a PA transistor
mounting mod that you can find described on Elecraft.com. That was
incorporated into KX2 production before your KX2.

Elecraft has not been energetic about adding instruction about certain things
like decoding ATU.DATA, even though that would be a very simple addition to the
manual.

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

2023-05-22 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
My K3s has this problem, but it only happens intermittently. When driving
the KPA1500, there would be a spike of about 70w. Drive level was between
20 and 25 watts. The K3s spent three months at Elecraft and they could not
fix it. I finally discovered two things that caused the power spike:
1. Exiting the CW QRQ mode; either by turning on RIT or by using the menu.
2. Narrowing the passband from XFIL 3 to XFIL 4 (1000 Hz to 400 Hz in my
case.), either with the XFIL button or the Width control.
These appear to be the only things that cause the power spike.

This leads me to believe it's a firmware problem (v 5.67, the most recent).
I tried going back to an earlier FW version, but could not figure out how to
load it. It doesn't look like there will be any new FW updates for the K3
series.

Hi,

We have an early serial K3 which has got an issue with power spikes. I have
done a TX gain calibration without it making a difference. The spike happens
mainly when you have changed to a new band and during the first
transmission. After that the spike is a lot smaller and not much of an
issue.

Anybody have any ideas of what this could be because of? It kind of makes it
impossible to run a solid state amplifier on the radio and probably not good
for the tube amplifiers either.

Re: [Elecraft] CM 500 Ear Covers

2023-05-08 Thread Mike Dodd

For the benefit of others, the earphone cups of the CM-500 are
98.4 mm (3 7/8") x 93.6 (3 11/16") - a standard 100 or 105 mm
(round) headphone pad should work.  However, since the screws
holding the headphones together are located under the cushions and
the cushions are clamped between the face and cup of the headphones,
cushions with built in foam screens will not work.

I don't remember which lists I've posted this to, so apologies if it's a
dupe. This is what I did to replace the cushions on my CM500:

Re: [Elecraft] Using KIO3B for digital and AFSK RTTY

2023-05-03 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Pete,

Plug in the USB cable between your K3 and computer. The computer will (should)
recognize the K3 sound card as USB Audio CODEC and install drivers
automatically. In WSJT-X, select USB Audio CODEC as your microphone and
speakers.

You can also do radio control through the same USB port, but if you want to do
both at the same time you need a port sharing program like LP Bridge.

Is there somewhere online where I can read about how to use the sound card in
my KIO3B? I am particularly interested in FT8 and AFSK RTTY, and the KIO3B
installation instructions are zero help.

[Elecraft] KX1 For Sale

2023-04-25 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings,

I’m embarrassed to admit how little I have used this radio. It’s been
sitting in the box for over ten years.

Elecraft KX1 #1797 transceiver in like new condition with:

KXAT1 Automatic Antenna Tuner

KXB3080 30 and 80 Meter Adapter

KXPD1 Plug-In Keyer Paddle

Pelican 1060 Case

All manuals

Purchased at Dayton in May 2007, built in May and June of that year.
Recently checked out on the bench and on the air. About 1.5w out with fresh
AA batteries; 3~3.5w out on 13.8v. Everything appears to be working
correctly and properly – HOWEVER – since the radio is 16 years old and has
been sitting unused for over ten years, I am offering it as is with no
guarantees. Pictures available here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/UWT3ga3Rmc1HSgfj7 More pictures and info
available on request.

Price : $500 including Priority Mail shipping anywhere in the US. Overseas
shipping available at buyer’s expense.

Thank you.

Bill,

Looks like that may have been the problem! I deleted the Utility,
unplugged the KUSB cable from the computer and power cycled. After the

[Elecraft] KAT500 PC connection problem

2023-04-23 Thread Mike Murray
It seems that my KAT500 has become stubborn in its old age and doesn’t like
communicating with the PC anymore. I’ve tried the Elecraft KUSB cable as
well as a direct serial port connection and neither works. Both ports
indicate that they are functioning normally in Control Panel and I’ve tried
different connection speeds just in case. Nada in all attempts.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Yes; "CONTINUOUS wave."

It's not really an unmodulated "FM" signal; it's an unmodulated carrier.
There's no reason to assign an arbitrary modulation designation -- why
not say it's an unmodulated FSK or PSK signal?

Re: [Elecraft] Power to the Tuner

2023-01-08 Thread Mike Dodd

Normally, the KAT500 takes its DC power from the K3S. The easiest way
to power the KAT500 when using it with the 7300 is the have to K3S

I do it differently. I power the K3 (now K4) _and_ the KAT500 from a
single Alinco DM330MV power supply. Whenever the power supply is on, the
rig and the KAT are both powered, but the rig doesn't need to be
switched on.

It seems like you could do the same thing with your two rigs. Turn on
the power supply, then choose the rig you want to use. No need to turn
on the K3 just to power the KAT500.

One other consideration: The K3's 12 VDC output is rated for 1 amp, and
the KAT500 specs say it draws a maximum of 1 amp. I'd be wary of being
that close to the limit.

Bottom line: You can't go wrong if you power all equipment from the
power supply.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Low 40m Output

2022-12-02 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings,

Working on a KPA 500, #2441. All bands except 40m work properly; 40m output
is about 125w. Testing into a dummy load:

Drive level: ~20w for all bands.

Voltage and current levels all seem normal; lower PA current and slightly
less voltage drop on 40m.

SWR back to exciter (K3s) is 1:1 on all bands

Output SWR on the internal meter reads 1:1, even on 40m

No fault messages on any band, no smoke, no funny noises.

The most obvious (to me) culprit is the 40m low pass filter. I was hoping
to find an obviously fried cap or coil, but everything looks OK. A web
search shows some folks reporting similar single-band faults, but they all
have obviously fried components (usually a cap) on the RF or LPF boards. Is
there anything else that could be at fault, other than the LPF circuit? It
appears everything else is common to all bands. I'm not sure my test gear
is sufficient to check the components in circuit.

Thank you.

Mike Cizek W0VTT

[Elecraft] K-POD LED command not working

2022-11-27 Thread Mike Dodd
I have a new K-POD connected to a K4D, and several macros assigned to
switchesF1-F8 operate correctly. Now I want to turn LED 4 on and off.
The K-POD user manual says:

"...LED 4 is always under user control. The following commands are used:
KPLED4ON; turns LED 4 on KPLED4OFF; turns led 4 off."

I assigned KPLED4ON; to a K-POD switch, but it does not turn on LED4. I
later assigned KPLED4ON; to a K4 function, and it too does not turn on LED4.

Does anyone know if KPLED4ON; is actually implemented in the K-POD?

another CQ.

If I can't copy part of his exchange, I'll ask for a repeat. There are
plenty of reasons for bad copy, not just speed. QSB and QRM were present
last weekend. I don't need to explain why I asked for a repeat!

One final comment regarding dupes. The contesting club to which I belong
has a mantra: "work all dupes!" There is no penalty, but there is the
possibility that one op or both busted a QSO, so the second one is
insurance. Just work 'em. you might take small time hit, but how much
time would you spend sending B4 or DUPE, then explaining to the other op
why you won't work him again?

I think some people use the USB connection for both rig control and
keying, but I like the separate keyer - I like the knob, and when I'm
operating outside of contests, I don't have to switch anything
around.

On my former K3s (and new K4d) I used the built-in USB connection -- no
RS-232 anywhere. It works fine.

I too have a WinKeyer USB with its separate USB connection to the
computer. N1MM is configured to recognize that USB port for WinKeyer,
and everything works great.

I leave everything always connected, and just need to set up N1MM for
each contest (like this weekend for the Worked All Germany contest).

Rick,

I waited patiently too, for months before my KX2(kit) arrived. This is not
about "waiting patiently".

If one of your orders had arrived 90 or 95% complete and you discovered
something missing and closing

in on a year later you didn't have any communication that they even KNEW
they shorted you 1 part/pc/pcb, I think

perhaps you might feel differently, right?

Patience I have. What I do not appreciate is total lack of communication
(or even acknowledgement from the people that will hopefully ship my (&
others) mic out eventually. I have an email from Wayne 10 months ago stating
it was an oversight and another that'll it be a few weeks.

Heck, I would've even been "OK" (not happy, but "OK") if there were a hand
scribbled note included with my kit that said "sorry, we realized at the
last minute we're now out of MH3 microphones, but you are on a list and will

I waited for the KAT500, patiently, for months.

I waited for the KPA500, patiently, for months.

I waited for the KPA1500, patiently, over a year (prepaid in full).

I waited for the K4D, patiently, 18 months (prepaid in full).

I didn't once ask for an update or cancel an order or ask for a refund,
didn't once whine when it wasn't there yet and was happy when it showed up.

I wasn't happy with the delay, but understood the reasons BECAUSE of the
lists. They posted JUST as often as now, though not on every list at the
same time. I track most of the lists, to learn of the other products too,
even if I don't have them because they are interesting products.

I was patient, you can be too. It really is THAT simple. They've posted the
delay causes and they can't ship what they don't have. Unbecoming comments
do not help anything and should be directed AT those responsible.

I accept the oversight. I accept the backorder. I check the Elecraft site
for shipping status. I know they don't have them. I deal with electronic
parts and service over 11,000 devices as part of my everyday job. I
communicate with my "customers"

Do I know that THEY know I am owed one? Well, not really. I have (now old)
emails from January from Wayne-that's it. I know he has much bigger fish to
fry than some mic for a New Brunswicker on the other side of the continent.

I know it won't be Wayne that (hopefully) eventually boxes up and ships me a
mic. It's whoever keeps track of old, long since departed orders.

If I am going to wait nearly a year (or maybe more), it might've been nice
to get an email every 4-5 months from a
shipping/receiving/purchasing/billing dept staff member saying "we haven't
forgot about you".

As of now, myself and all others that I've been in touch with(on this
particular issue), have rec'd nothing. We don't know if:

The person boxing up the KX2 kits didn't know there was supposed to be a mic
included

or

They boxed up the kits anyways to get 95% of the product out the door to
waiting customers

or

Even if they have record of the folks who have complete kits vs kits missing
mics.

or

Something else.

We just don't know.

Communications have been non existent from the shipping dept (ever) and none
since Jan 10th . 2021 (from Wayne himself, who seems quite knowledgeable and
friendly btw)

Sincerely,

Mike VE9AA

Oh, and lest anyone think I am mad. No , I am not mad. Overall I am very
happy with my $10k+ worth of Elecraft products.

It just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling to maybe order a K4HD (or two
for SO2R) when the time comes.

That isn't the point at all, it isn't what I said, and you know it. I
simply believe that the folks who have paid for stuff many months ago should
be kept regularly informed ... directly, not via word of mouth. It's not
expensive for Elecraft to do so. They just have to care a bit more. They

for shipping status.

==

That isn't the point at all, it isn't what I said, and you know it. I
simply believe that the folks who have paid for stuff many months ago should
be kept regularly informed ... directly, not via word of mouth. It's not
expensive for Elecraft to do so. They just have to care a bit more. They
know exactly what the status of everything is at any point in time.

Carl

Yes, I totally understand.

If I went to the Elecraft site today and wanted to order an MH3, it's on
backorder. I get it. I would not be allowed to order it.

You may be missing the point. Some of us have ordered and already paid for
the KX2-shack-in-a-box which *INCLUDES* an MH3 microphone.

In my case, in a month or so it'll be about 1 year since I've paid for this.

I am not sure if I could've/would've not ordered the Kit or not if they had
told me it would not ship complete, but it would've been nice to be given
that option. As it was, it showed up incomplete.

Seems like a small complaint, I know, but I've rec'd a number of private
emails already from folks in similar situations, some not as lucky as myself
(I own multiple radios).

I've found in my life, usually "honesty is the best policy" and especially
being a ham I believe "communication is key" (in life, business, etc.)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone ! (VE Thanksgiving this weekend)

[Elecraft] KAT500 frequency memories question

I asked this in the KPA500 group, but it probably was too far off-topic,

I have a K4D/KPA500/KAT500. If I use the KAT utility program to save the
configuration, are the frequency memories' settings also save in the
config file?

So, if for some reason I need to restore a saved configuration to the
KAT500, will that restore the L/C settings to the frequency memories?

I wish I could tell you. I ordered the same kx2 shack-in-a-box before Xmas

January. I love the rig btw.

They know there was no mic included,(I've sent emails, but there was nothing

mic.

Good thing I do mostly CW.

I received the radio around June but still haven't received the Mic.

Any idea when these will be available?

[Elecraft] K3 No RCV No Xmit

2022-08-15 Thread Mike Fatchett W0MU
I was activating a park this weekend and the radio stopped receiving
signals.  I had to turn the volume up all the way to hear "static"  but
no signals.  When keying the radio there was zero output.

I was able to fix the issue by removing the receiver module and
reseating all the TMP cables.  No error codes were displayed.

When using CW in QSK mode I did notice a couple of times where the audio
would cut out for a bit and then come back.  I was thinking it could
have been a TR switch that is flaky.

I not really sure what fixed the issue.  I did not have deoxit with me.
That will go in the kit next time.  Is there anything I should do now to
try to make sure it does not happen again? Taking a backup rig will be
on the list too!

The SN of this K3 is 658 so it is an older one.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: [Elecraft] Systematic error in spots as heard by K3

2022-07-29 Thread Mike Harris via Elecraft
I should clarify a loose and potentially misleading last sentence. The
GPSDO 10MHz external reference clocks a frequency counter that monitors
the TXCO actual frequency and this number is used to control the synths,
not the number you have set in REF CAL doing WWV calibration. Nothing
touches the TXCO.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

The drift of the internal TCXO is easily displayed from a
cold start. The GPSDO ref osc knocks out the drift.
