Please reference the P3 manual pp19. Markers donot follow the VFO. [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 encoders.
Hello List Encoders in both my KX3 and PX3 have become very noisey after being idle for a few months. The PX3 is on verge of total failure. I know the KX3 had an encoder upgrade a while back and that appears to be an easy process to effect replacement. For the PX3 I can find no information on the replacement process. Has anyone on the list perform the replacement activity? Alan, If you have central air-condx/heating with variable speed compressor and / or fans(s), shut it down and check for the spurs. What you are describing is the same I see at my QTh when my unit is cooling/heating. I see spurs only wihen the compressor and/or fans are running. My unit is a “dual fuel” unit, used as a heatpump above 43F, swithching to a gas fired furnace below 43F. Reference pp 49 of the K3 manul. Procedure to calibrate the “LP XVERTER WATTMETER” is presenter there. The “Power Meter” for the LP port is not a power meter in the general sense…. I had the same issues. The interconnects supplied with the P3s I had were poor. I finally cut every one in half and filed in the circular file. Made my own with some DS-RG316 and quality 50 Ohm BNC new old stock. Hi Wayne, After searching I found info in the programmers manual that helped me understand how it works. It is a little hard to follow using the K3 / K3S owners manual, and / or Cady’s book. I have written a couple of macros, not yet checked out, that may work(?). Turn ESSB ON, SET TX EQ: ES1;TE-03+00+00+00+00+00+03+03; Mode must be SSB to turn ESSB ON, SET TX EQ Bins, Sets EQ for ESSB (USB, LSB), AM, and FM A “+” sign will appear in lower RH corner of display Turn ESSB OFF, SET TX EQ: ES0;TE-03+00+00+00+00+00-03-06; Turn ESSB OFF, SET TX EQ Bins for current mode Two Separate TX EQ, 1,(USB, LSB) or 2,(AM FM) Also I was able to effect the settings via the Main/Config menus…. Setting ESSB ON a single TX EQ is used for all voice modes. Setting ESSB OFF, the two TX EQ settings will be be available as described in the macro notes. I haven’t verified this with testing yet as to the actual effect… Also, not sure about the CW/DATA Modes….. [Elecraft] Connecting the K4D to an external monitor
The PC would need a HDMI port configured as an INPUT device. The vast (ALL??) majority of LT and PCs hardware only have HDMI OUTPUT ports. A little back ground,, The effort started as a result of my using WWV at 15.00 MHz for calibrating the reference oscillator. Tuning from 14.99 to 15.00 MHz I noticed a 9 to 12 Db drop in signal strength of WWV. I could hear relays’ switching at the 14.99 to 15.00 MHz boundary. This lead to making a list of (“suspected”) switching points by tuning from low 1MHz through 30MHz listening Looking at schematics of the KBPF3/A I heard switching at some points that did not make sense, with the 14.99 to 15.00 MHz boundary being one. It is not easy to probe the KBPF3A in my K3S-100 to check which relays are bein set/reset because of the installed KRX3A. I have a K3S-10, but will need to install a KBPF3/A to check the 14.99 to 15.00 MHz boundary and gather the information. Looking for details of switch over frequencies and expected performance of the KBPF3A in its various bands, There is improvement in the BCB and below 500KHz with the KBPF3A enabled, however the other SW BCB bands I have tried are lacking. Has anyone measured the performance of the KBPF3A? I had a similar problem. I purchased a P3 kit in 2015, assembled, and it worked well. The firmware as received, was a rev behind. Trying to upgrade via the normal method, was unable to accomplish. Trying to force an upgrade, was unsuccessful. Had to return for warranty repair. The EEPROM was corrupted. All was OK until about 4 years ago, the P3, occasionally, would not boot up. I received some guidance from one of the engineers, to check a capacitor in the P3 power supply. If it was a tantalum (10 uF I believe), it was the incorrect value, and to change to 0.1uf (1206 sized). After the capacitor change, no more powerup issues. I believe there was a supply sequencing issue. I am looking for the details, and when found, I will post. Include complete and accurate detail. Skip, I agree with all points you have made. Add to the check list the offset in the K3 Filter setup, verify it is set correctly. On 5 pole filters,, i.e. for SSB the standard 2.7KHz filter, allows an offset setting range of 0.00 to +- 9.99KHz (in 10Hz steps). The same check would apply to the 8 pole filters, which should be set to 0.00. These offsets are used by the f/w to set the operating frequency and proper carrier point on the filter slopes. Furthermore, I don’t understand why the NCS isn’t using his RIT, or operating in split mode, to “chase” stations he perceives to be “off frequency.” I think back to the past when no one had a digital frequency display to “get within” a couple of Hz of the desired frequency. I have observed very similar occurrences. For example changing bands, if the center frequency was previously tuned to 10.000.00 MHz with a span of 20KHz, then changing to another band, say 20M or 40M, then back to 30M (10MHz), the center frequency will briefly appear in the upper left corner of the P3 display, as well as in the center of the display. It then corrects, with the proper LH-CENTER-RH ( 9.990.00 – 10.000.00 – 10.010.00 ) displayed. Occasionally the display will show ( 10.000.00 – 10.000.00 – 10.010.00 ) and not correct the display. Also the FILTER BAND PASS will appear on the left side of the display, remaining there. All of the communication to the P3 in this case is from the K3S. I have no computer or other device connected to the K3S/P3. A search on Amazon for “Amphenol CS-DSDHD 15-pin” returns a list of fully populated 1:!, shielded M/F and M/M cables sourced by Amphenol in various lengths from 2.5 to 25 feet ( plus some others). These are also sourced by Mouser and DigiKey and other suppliers in the US and Eu. The drawings are available for the cables on suppliers website. I like the availability of drawings to “see how it is wired”. If you look up the data sheet, and under “Absolute Maximum Values” will reveal a clue. The MAX 1406 shows a maximum value of 7 volts. Wouldn’t hold my breath on it working if 12V applied. This is disappointing news. I just purchased a K3S-10 to use mainly as a uWave IF. I looked at the K144XV and KXV3B schematics. The fix will need to be implemented on the KXV3B. The K144XV uController monitors the 7R voltage from the baseboard, that is routed through KXV3B, and when this voltage is 0, the 5R voltage is turned off, and 5T ON, sending +5V out the BNC if it is strapped in. There is not a way for the K144XV to determine the transition out of the RX to the TX state was NOT intended for it. So the K144XV is being cycled RX/TX, enabled or not. I have determined a fix that would require 1 trace cut, 2 diodes, and 2 resistors, and 4 connections on the KXV3B. It is rather simple in circuit design concept, but may be physically difficult to implement. Possibly with SMT components and a very small PCB. I do not know how much room is available, or if the trace cut mentioned can be made. Bob, I tried to email you directly, but it ‘bounced.’ Are the filter Elecraft/Inrad made filters? I doubt the 2 filters are bad if they are Elecraft sourced. That would be the last to suspect. Make sure you have the MODE selected to receive that is enabled for the filter. Else try this; Load the K3 Utility, and select the Filter Setup menu. 1) Make sure the main receiver is selected. 2) On the two filters you have installed, UN-CHECK all of selectins. 3) Click the “APPLY” button. The K3 should do a reset, and reboot. 4) Once the K3 has rebooted, RE-ENABLE the 2 filters you installed. Should be for CW and DATA only. 5) Click “APPLY” button. The K3 should do a reset, and reboot. 6) Check operation of the 2 new filters. If the above fails, repeat the above but DISABLE ALL filters then RE-ENABLE filter configuration as you desire. Hello Jack, Vic, P3 / SVGA. I have tried at least 10 different USB memory sticks, sizes 64 MB (yes Mega, probably a USB 1.x?), 128MB, 4GB, …. through 64GB, all USB 2.0. I have tried formatting NTFS, FAT32, and ExFAT. On a couple of the sticks I get a “Cannot Initialize Device” error. With most sticks nothing happens, no error. Initiating a “Save”, nothing happens. All sticks work in Windows 10 machine with no problem. I can see a RED LED on SVGA module flashing continuously. I have reloaded all of the f/w today with no change. The f/w loaded is the current available, and I have the latest utility. The external display is 1920 x 1080 which I changed to last month. Any help appreciated. I have the KAT/KPA500 setup with the K3. It works great when trained, tracking VFO. I had only one antenna available per band at the time using the setup. Currently the “shack” is undergoing a move and renovation. I will be back on with possibly as many as 3 antennas available on a single band. I have looked for answer to the following question. Is the training saved per-BAND/ANTENNA combination tuning solution?.. possibly resulting in 3 solutions per band. If there is only one solution there are implications in switching to a different antenna in a band with multiple antenna choices. In my case the future may hold a vertical, beam, and horizontal loop on 40M. Bill, The K3 only allows the “split” mode for SSB and/or CW to be enabled, at least from panel. Trying to enable split in any other mode, the VFO B window flashes “N/A”. You may have different indications / results if the split command is sent via the CAT, and a mode other than CW or SSB is selected. Bill, I had an issue very similar. The “Automatic TXGain” procedure is performed at 52 MHz. I was using a 50 ohm load attached, and at 50.125 the KAT3 have trouble matching the load. Also it appears there is not enough power out in the lower part of the band for the SWR bridge to function. Part of the problem is I believe, the f/w switches the KPA3 ON at 8 watts instead of the usual 12……….. Performing a MANUAL TX Gain procedure on 6M may help. Henk, I looked at this issue and it is a K3/K3S issue. I was able to setup 2 transverters (XV1 and XV2) on the same band and switch between them when the band change was initiated from the K3 front panel. When a frequency is sent via RS232 connection, it appears the K3 wants to determine what band it should be on determined from the frequency. It begins this check without checking to determine if it does have a correct band already selected. The checking would appear to start with XV1, finding a “match” then switching to that band (XV1), even when XV2 is selected previously, and the frequency is correct. This is from my observation, and may be over simplified. The only solution I have determined is to access the config menu and turn XV1 OFF. XV2 will then be the first match for the frequency sent, and thus selected. Looking at the schematics, there is an adjustment for each LO, but this must be a factory adjustment as there is no mention of them in manuals. Good to contact support. Gregg If you have had a Win10 update lately, and the “NEW” Edge browser installed,, well,,!!!,,. I had an issue about 3 weeks ago after a Win10 dll became “missing” or corrupted. Reloaded C++ x86 redistrib package from MS fixed it. This may NOT be your issue. However I have noticed SpectraVue does not operate as smoothly as it once did, as the waterfall freezes momentarily when demod frequency is changed . Its run “priority” may be low now… I haven’t had time to look into this issue yet for a fix. I don’t believe it is an issue with S’Vue S/W you are having. The “Rev” that is silkscreened on the board reflects the revision level of the bare board, NOT the assembly revision level of the module which will reflect changes made to the module and could any component, hardware, or circuit changes. The module revision level should be reflected on an attached label, written on the pwb (i.e. “ASSY C2”) in a conspicuous location, or not(?). I have a K3 and K3S and looking at this issue for a week now. K3 FW 5.66 KPA3 KAT3 K3S FW 5.67 KPA3A KAT3A ATN6 set Latest K3/K3S utility installed Test equipment includes HP 736 Wattmeter, Bird wattmeter, and a load with > 25db return loss. After running automated TX GAIN on either unit. K3 TX-LPGAIN is in range 12 – 16 K3S TX-LPGAIN is in range of 60-65 Exit TECH MD. SET ATU to AUTO Initiating a “ATU TUNE” on 52.000 MHZ the ATU finds a 1.2 match or better without issue. Setting the power control to 90W, the power out shown on the external wattmeter is 80 to 85W, with Tuner in AUTO or BYPASSED. Initiating a “ATU TUNE” lower in 6M band at 51.125 the ATU has trouble finding a match on both K3 and K3S. The K3 has more problems, and takes a lot longer. The resolved match on the K3 will be anywhere from 1.2 to 1.6, and setting power control to 90W, only 55 to 60 W is realized with Tuner in AUTO or BYPASSED. Running MANUAL TX LPGAIN only on 6M at 50.125 results in the following: K3 TX-LP GAIN is in the range of 62 to 70. K3S TX LPGAIN in in the range of 90 to 105. This appears to resolve the ATU matching issue (SWR < 1.2) and the lower power out (80 to 85W) at 50.125 MHZ Higher in the band at 52.000MHz operation appears to be the same. If you can receive WWV on 20MHz to calibrate the K3/K3S, all the better, Using a frequency counter I would think 0.1Hz resolution and attending accuracy would be in order, plus an accurate time base in the counter, GPS locked,,, or oven-ized, on all the time reference ,,, ect. [Elecraft] 6M K3,, KAt3, GAIN-LP, Power Out issues
Having issues with one of my K3 on 6M. One has been resolved. FW 6.67 installed. KAT3 was having trouble finding a match into a -25db load at 50.125MHz. It would take several seconds to resolve To an SWR of anywhere from 1.2 to 1.7 indicated SWR. During the searching sequence the display would show -..- , but finally resolve and display the SWR. Pressing ATU Tune again would initiate another tuning sequence with the same results. The TX Gain Calibration was performed, with the same results. FW 5.66 installed. Since there was a fix in FW 5.67 to address the K3S 6M gain issue, FW 5.66 was re-installed. The above issue was still present. I performed TX Gain Calibration again, still no resolution. L10-C10 Removed from KAT3 After reading about the trap problem on the reflector, L10 and C10 were remove and a jumper installed. I found that the leads of the 2 capacitors that made up C10 were against the solder mask in very close contact with the surrounding ground. Performed TX Gain Calibration again. This seems to have fixed the KAT3 tuning issue. The KAT3 now resolves to a 1.2:1 to 1.3 SWR at 50.125, and no retuning / re-resolving to subsequent ATU Tune request Power out at 50.125 vs 52.000 I noted in the K3 Utility that the TX GAIN Calibration is performed at 52.000MHz. Requesting 100W at the power control resulted in a measurement of about 58W output at 50125MHz, and 84W at 52.000MHz. TXGAIN-LP Changing?? Through the Config Menu, I checked the TXGAIN-LP and TXGAIN-HP for 6M during this debug. TXGAIN HP was noted to be as the TXGAIN Calibration had set. TXGAIN Calibration values set would range 10 to 14. HOWEVER, TXGAIN-LP was changed from the initial setting to 87 at one point I have noted various values of TXGAIN-LP during this part of the debug, ranging from 70 to 89. Running TXGAIN Calibration will set it back to a value in the 10 to 14 range. Questions: Is there an issue with TXGAIN Calibration be performed at 52.000MHz that affects the lower part of the band? Is there an issue with the 6M Filter alignment? What is the center frequency of the alignment procedure? Test Equipment used: Bird Watt meter with appropriate element for power and frequency range. HP-436A Wattmeter with 8482 Sensor connected through 30db 100W attenuator. The two meter correlate very well within measurement tolerances. Anyone seen this before? Ben W4SC Power Out on 6M low? The config selection of ANT=BNC / ANT=MAIN does NOT actually select which is used for KRX3 alternate antenna input. When AUX input cable of the KRX3 is connected to the KAT3, the NON-TRANSMIT antenna used for the KRX3. Only one can be physically connected to be used by the KRX3. If no ATU, the only connection that is available would be to the installed BNC AUX connection. I believe this config selection may be inserting attenuation during transmit in the KRX3 signal path to provide protection. For KRX3 AUX input I would always build / config to use the BNC connection. There are 2 points of failure in the ATU that would be catastrophic for the KRX3 if either of 2 relays fail. Windows NotePad will open, and you should be able to print. Don’t change any settings/info and save because if you do the K3 utility probably will not open if you attempt a reload to the K3. Bill Upgrading to KSYN3A, you should run the High Power TXGAIN Calibration according to the installation instructions. Actually, I had to run the WATTMETER, and BOTH the LP (5W) and HP (50W) calibrations to “cure” the same issue you are observing. Installing the KSYN3A in a K3 results in lower output on 6M when the KPA3 is active, i.e. the requested power is greater than 12W. When the power requested is less than 12W, the KPA3 is inactive (bypassed), the output power is within measuremt accuracy on an external wattmeter to what is requested by the K3 power setting control. When the power requested is greater than 12 W, i.e. 100W for example, what I have observed is at 52.000MHz the external wattmeter reads 85W, and at 50.500MHz only 63W is realized. There is little difference in the output power measured in each case with/without KAT3 tuner “bypassed” or “enabled and matched” at the operating frequency’s outlined above. It appears that this anomaly occurs only on 6M, I don’t know if there is a solution or fix for the above. [Elecraft] KPA3 E100719 Bracket?
As the K3S has been discontinued, looking over the “Parts and Mods” I see “E100719 Bracket KPA3A” listed. Having recently upgraded from 10W to a 100W radio by adding the KPA3A kit, I don’t see this bracket in the instructions, nor find any instructions for its installation. Anyone know what ill this bracket cures, installation instructions, ect.? In Office 365 (Excel) the “Save As” file types include both ‘text (MS-DOS) .txt, and ‘pdf’ and many other types. Saving as ‘txt’ will allow opening of the generated txt file, then to copy and paste into an email. [Elecraft] KX3 - PX3 Interconnects Lengths
Has anyone located SHORTER cables for interconnects KX3 – PX3. With the lengths supplied there is a big “wad” of cables remaining and in the way for the above/below stacking I have. Eight (8”) cables would more than suffice. Two possible replacements. Not exact appearance to original, but both are 1.25 inch diameter, and about 0.7 inch tall. Very close to original measurements. This one is plastic. I have serial # 1866. I am the second owner, and Elecraft paperwork I received with the unit shows the unit was returned to Elecraft for “PA DISS Fault on 20M and 6M, with D10 and L6 being replace. In addition , under warrantee, the T/R switch was updated ( Rev E?? ), and the 12M mod was performed. There are NO details as to exactly what was replaced. There is no indication as to what the NEW rev level of the LPF would be as a result. [Elecraft] KPA500 - KAT500 stopping K3 boot
Is there an issue with the KPA500 being OFF with power up -> booting of the K3? Does it need to be actually powered up, i.e. and in operational state? OR is just having it in the “sleeping” state (REAR switch ON, FRONT PANEL SW-OFF) OK? I know about KAT500 and AUX-BUSS stopping K3 bootup, and have an “automatic” solution that works great.
