[Elecraft] Transverters discontinued?
I noticed in Fred Cady's "Assembling the KX3-Line Station" that he mentions the Elecraft XV222 and XV423 transverters. I hadn't paid attention to that until just getting my 2m option for my KX3. On the website I see that all that's available are manuals. Are these things history now? Also have several printed manuals. All 3 are modified to run on an external LO source. The LO mod is easily reversible to use the original crystal and oven. Only a few parts and jumpers need to be repositioned. There is a SMA jack on the back panel for the external LO, you would need a suitable LO source with output up to maybe 14dBm, each is different. I am unable to select 10 Mhz for an IF for transverter use only selections are 7,14,21, or 28 10 Mhz is enabled (can you disable a band on the K2) and works as a regular band. As per the K60XV Assembly and Operating Instructions Page 18 "The IF field can be set to 7, 10, 14, 21, or 28 MHz." When I go to set the IF the options are only 7, 14, 21, or 28 MHz. The 10 MHz option is not available. I'm running the latest firmware v1.09 on the K2 and v1.02 on the K60XV (or so I would believe it to be as this is a new K2). Can anyone check to see if they have 10 MHz as an IF option on their K2. As so often happens, when I take the time to explain a problem, I realize the solution. My problem was that I accidentally swapped the two BNC cables when reconnecting to the K3. [Elecraft] Transverters problem
I disconnected my K3 completely to move it. I have the 3 XV series transverters and a p3. Moved the k3 and transverters to a different spot and reconnected without the P3. All are powered through a rig runner. When I apply power to the rig runner the K3 powers on by itself, which is odd. Everything seems to work including automatic switching of the transverters. However when I try to power of the K3 with its power button, the K3 display goes blank but it's backlight remains on. After that, it won't power back up unless I remove and restore dc power to the K3. If I disconnect the daisy chained accessory cable from the k3 , the K3 powers on and off normally. I have the XV50 and XV144 on my K2. And other than a separate power out LED on the front of the transverter, it becomes just like that band was installed on the K2. Gil, The Elecraft XV series transverters were designed to interface with the K2, and then extended to the K3. If your K2 includes the K60XV option with its 1 mW TX and RX connections, the operation is seamless. The K60XV transceiver ports connect to the transverter and the HF antenna connections can stay in place. Without the K60XV, operation is still great, the transverter will accept up to an 8 watt input signal from the K2 high power output, but you will have to switch between the connection to the transverter and to the HF antenna. Once that hurdle is passed, the operation is again seamless. I built a XV222 for a ham friend with a MP (I don't have one) and am not having good luck with the -6dBm signal level that is indicated in the MP manual. (I'm testing with my K3). Hi all I am using a XV-50 and XV-144. I am now finishing a Xv-432. When setting up in the K-2 menu as TRN3, setting the operating freq. as 432 and exiting the menu, then going to TRN3 the dispayed frequency is 418.000. To get the K-2 display to read 432.000, I have to set the Freq. to 446 in the setup menu. Is this right?? Can't find any reference to this in the K-2, XV60 or XV432 manuals. Phil, It sounds like you have either the frequency offset or the IF frequency currently set to 14.000 MHz - something to check out. Hi Kevin, I designed the XV transverters for Elecraft and will attempt to answer your question. Receiver design always requires some compromise between sensitivity and dynamic range. To maximize sensitivity, lossy elements, like filters, are moved farther away from the antenna to minimize their effect on noise figure. Sufficient gain is also provided to minimize the effect of the noise figure of the following stages of the receiver which in this case is the transceiver used with the transverter. To maximize dynamic range, the receiver designer would do just the opposite. Selectivity would be placed as close to the receiver input as possible and gain would be minimized. The XV transverters in standard configuraton attempt to balance these requirements in a way that is optimum for most users. We do recognize that there are situations such as very high interference environments or when external preamps are used, or when a very low noise figure IF transceiver is used, where the standard configuration is no longer optimum. This is more-or-less possible with various packages, I would be able to support this myself. The only transverters I would use based on (1st) quality and (2nd) price are Elecraft, unfortunately I can't find any info on the 430 MHz transverter which was proposed a year or so ago. The quality of the Elecraft products exceeds everything else I have found at a reasonable price (I am excluding Kuhne here - way too expensive for a poor programmer). I would like to use an Elecraft 144 MHz and 430 MHz with my IC-7800 - as the 430 MHz doesn't seem to be coming soon I am looking at the IC-910H (I have one on the table next to me). But I would still prefer a couple of good transverters so that I can use by big box of tricks. If it were up to me, and it is not, I would like to see transverters for 432 and 1296. 902 would be a surprise, since it seems to me it is even more neglected than 222. But, as other's have said, they would like to see a kit from Elecraft. This is probably just because they like the quality of the stuff that Elecraft has put out so far. But, of course, the more time you spend on developing products for increasingly smaller market segments, the more you have to charge for them. And if you know that Down East Microwave already does them and well, I would imagine it is hard for Elecraft to justify the time and money spent, unless you just OEM (rebrand/repackage) their product. Are there any plans for Elecraft to produce 432MHz or 1296MHz transverters? These would be a very nice addition to the growing family of Elecraft kits. Also, does anyone know of Elecraft-quality 432MHz and 1296MHz power amps? The only thing I've found so far are homebrew stuff and nothing that comes in a kit. Reflector members, Just a note about the Elecraft Transverters... So very little has been written or posted on the reflector about these units. These deserve a much higher profile in the product line. I urge every Elecrafter to try out one of these kits. It compliments the K2 line so nicely and the rigs perform so well! I put together two of them and they do liven up the activity in the shack. I will complete the third one this fall. I cannot speak more highly of the units. Performance, as expected is right up there with the entire K2 line. If you have given any of transverters a consideration and then hesitated or not made the purchase - please - reconsider and do make the purchase!! You will have a blast working with them. The transverters are excellent. Easy to build and awesome performance. I ordered my first Elecraft product, a XV144 - the 2m transverter, a week ago. Took just a few hours to assemble it, and it was easy to align and setup. I have done a fair bit of kit building and home brewing (DSP10, Tandem Match, KK7B R1 and R2, and others). This is smoothest kit yet. And in Elecraft tradition, the outcome is world class. Just see the review of the transverter in October's QST Product Review. It beats the Down East Transverter hands down and measures up to the gold standard - the SSB LT2S which cost $900 (and is not available any more.) The closest commercial competitor today is DB6NT's TR144H that costs a $1,000 Euro - about $1,200 and its still incomplete (needs special options/parts to work with low power transverter outputs like that from Yaesu 1KMP, provide IF swithcing, etc). I am so impressed with Elecraft's transverter that just after building the XV144, I ordered the XV222. Can't wait for the XV432. If only I could rig up a pan adapter for the K2, I'd use that as an IF rig instead of the Kenwood 850. I guess I've joined the family of Elecraft fans. If only I could rig up a pan adapter for the K2, I'd use that as an IF rig instead of the Kenwood 850. Raj, As an alternative, N4PY's software control program has a bandscan function, that when you press it, it takes over the K2 for about 10 seconds, and scans the bandwidth you want, and shows the display on a quasi-spectrum analyzer screen shot. Works very well. http://www.ralabs.com/n4py/ Also, on six meters, I have an older Icom 551D. The receiver blows wind, but it transmits OK. Receive audio is just oh so bad! In looking at the Icom diagram, the IF shift uses a 10.xx MHz IF. Hmm. So I tapped that feed, and ran that to my K2, which picked up the IF signal on the 10 MHz band. Now I have the clean K2 receive audio. Basically, I tune with the Icom, and transmit with it, but receive on the K2. Kinda weird, but it works. I'm saving up the nickels to buy another K2 ( so I can be on six and the low bands at the same time), and of course a Elecraft six meter transverter. And for Elecrafts next item: Oh would I like a box that taps the K2 IF, and is a spectrum analyzer. The output would be VGA, to plug into your monitor, or USB/UTP connection. That UTP connection would also tie into the K2 rs-232 for control across any network. Hi Make sure you are using the BNC on the right (J3) when looking at the back for the TX IF in and the one on the left (J2) for the RX IF out. The silk screen is backwards on some of the rear panels and there may be a little label over the original silk screen with the correct information on it. I have two early XVxxx and the silkscreen was backwards on both of them. You can order the correct label from Elecraft. Obviously the transverter will not work if the IF cables are reversed. This had me going in circles on one I built recently. When using the transverter with a single TX/RX cable J2 and J3 are connected together so it does not matter which one you use. But when using separate TX and RX cables the paths are split and J2 must be used for the RX and J3 for the TX. The BNC tees will need to mount at a 45 degree angle and you will need to make up several short 3-6 inch coax jumpers to use to connect the transverter stack. I had to use them in the vertical positon and then set the transverters on a book so they did not bend the wires coming out of the bottom of the T-connector when hooked up to the transverters. Are you using a special BNC designed T connector that fits back there? Paul, I would never recommend such a device if your a serious VHFr They leak and will pick up alot of external signals that are not on VHF! I think a famous DX record in the UK was claimed by two 28 MHz drivers and leaky connections in the 70s! I would only recommend good solid cables and connectors and no switch if your wanting your system to remain at the best performance. The A/B type switches are generally not good and will leak signal across the switch ports. HI Yes if you install the KX60M option then the switching is not required on the antenna because the K2 RF is not required to drive the transverter. The drive comes from the low level output on the KX60M not the K2 finals. The K2 output circuit is turned off when the transverter is selected on the band switch and low level drive is selected in the menu. The XV144/222 does not have a frequency adjustment for the local oscillator (although the XV50 does) There is an offset adjustment in the K2 transverter menu to compensate for slight frequency variations. This will allow you to adjust the K2 dial indicator to the correct frequency for your transverter. Each of the six transverter menu selections have their own offset setting. Hi Paul, We also offer the K60XV internal transverter interface option for the K2. It has a separate low level output for the driving transverters and automatically switches to that output from the K2's HF output when you select a transverter band. To correct for the 100 Hz offset go into the K2's transverter menu area.
