[Elecraft] KAT500 remote control questions.

2021-07-19 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I'm using the KAT500 remote software to control the tuner remotely. The
only issue I have is it will not stay in "Manual" mode and switches to
"Auto" when the software starts up on the remote.  It looks like it
switches to Auto at other times also, not sure about that yet.

Is there any way to cause the KAT500 Remote software, in host mode, to
start in "Manual" mode?

I have the software start when the computer boots, along with RCForb
server and RemAud.

The radio is a Kenwood TS-590sg, but that should not matter.  I have
tried it with a K3, no difference.

Thanks,

Gordon - N1MGO

I can’t help you with the KAT500-Remote Software because I don’t use it. If
you’re not satisfied with how KAT500-Remote is working for you, then I suggest
taking a look at the KAT500 Utility software (v.1.19.18.5). As I explained,
simply log into the ham shack computer with VNC Client, TeamViewer, etc. to
manage the KAT500 utility and you’re good to go. One advantage of this
approach is that you don’t have to install the Elecraft software on every
‘client’ computer to be able to access the KAT500 and you’re not limited to a
PC as other devices that can run VPN Client TeamViewer, etc. (iPhone, iPad,
Linux, Windows, Android, Google Chrome, etc.) can access the local computer
running KAT500. It also doesn't require port forwarding configuration to gain
access to the shack’s PC.

Another approach with the KAT500 Utility is to use a Lantronix EDS4100 (or
similar) Serial-to-Ethernet Device Server which provides a ComPort connection
between a device (such as the KAT500) and the PC where you’re located. Connect
the KAT500 RS232 port to an open port on the Device Server, install the
Lantronix ComPort software on the PC of interest, configure the EDS Device
Server with the RS232 settings needed, and now you can connect directly to the
KAT500 using the Elecraft Utility Software from wherever you are. The
Lantronix ComPort software configures the PC to accept an ethernet connection
and convert the connection to reflect a ComPort. Windows Manager sees it as a
ComPort, and you specify that ComPort in the KAT500 setup (I used Com9 set to
38400 baud). You’ll will need to setup port forwarding at the hamshack to gain
access to the Lantronix brower-based configuration setup and/or run the
Lantroix utility software to manage the Device Server. You can install the
Lantronix ComPort software on multiple PCs and they can all access a given
ComPort (one connection at a time) for the KAT500.

I've used the EDS4100 for a number of years to access my KAT500 remotely using
the Elecraft Utility running on Win10 on my MacBook Pro running Parallels to
create a Win10 Virtual Machine. I also installed it on the shack PC. I also
used the EDS4100 (which can support four physical ComPort connections) with my
KPA500 before I switched to the Remote Rig RC-1216H. Again, that change was
done so that I could access the KPA500 with a web browser.

In summary if it turns out that you’re not satisfied with your current
approach, I heartily recommend using the KAT500 Utility software to manage the
KAT500 as I’ve outlined. You'll have access to the same front panel controls
as you would sitting in front of the Tuner: Power, Tune, Memorize, Mode
(Automatic, Manual, Bypass), Antenna (1-2-3). You’ll also have “Other”
options (Caps on Ant Side, Bypassed, Attenuator, Amp Key Interrupt) and the
software shows you the "Last Observed” Frequency, VFWD, VRFL, SWR, ByPass SWR,
Band, and Tune State. It also displays the capacitance (pF) and Inductance (nH)
of the tuned ’solution’.

Barry,
Thanks for the comments and hints.  I'm using the KAT500-Remote
Version 1.0.15.0 software over the internet to a remote system in a
different town.
This is NOT the utility software, it allows for hosting a KAT500 over

client end does not have a clear indication of the power status of the
remote KAT500.

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it
works, but it would be much better for a positive indication of the
power state by button color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC  is applied, but not sure this is always observed.  I have no
other way to see the remote site when this happens.

That is the key step.  With “Initial Power set to Power On” when DC is
applied, the KAT500 will indeed always be on when power is applied.
The question is what happens if power is removed and recognizing that
the KAT500 is without power.

The Elecraft Utility tests for a Com Port connection when it opens.
If the KAT500 is not on, the utility will not see the KAT500’s com
port and it will be unable to connect.  If the KAT500 is on, the
connection to the PC will established (assuming your RS232 cable is
connected to a PC).  You can see the results in one of two ways:

1.  Under the Port Tab, selecting that and you’ll see a box open
reporting the connection and the serial speed of that connection, or

2.  Under the Firmware Tab, there is an activity log that shows the
sequence of events to open the Com Port and establish a connection.

If the KAT500 does not have power, these tests will fail.  Under the
Firmware->Activity Log you’ll see entries stating (for example):

10:56:02 Attempting to contact KAT500 on port COM2 at 38400 bit/s

as it scrolls through different baud rates attempting to connect.  If
you see this, the KAT500 is not getting power.

Presumably you have a way to remotely turn on the power supply
connection to the KAT500. When power is restored you’ll see
confirmation in the activity log:

10:59:39 KAT500 version 01.75. Serial port speed 38400 bit/s

I use a West Mountain Radio R40051 which is a web-based device that
has five power ports (Anderson Power Poles) where one provides power
to the K3, a second port provides power to the KAT500, a third port
provides power to the Remote Rig, and a fourth port provides power to
the Antenna Genius 8x2.  Thus, I can shutdown/recycle these devices
remotely. I shutdown the equipment when severe storms are expected, or
it appears that there may be a glitch that a reboot might resolve.
Given that I’m currently 1,280 miles from the shack, redundancy in
the form of being able to power down/power up equipment is a nice feature.

I can also remotely shutdown and restart the power supply that powers
my Elecraft equipment  (except the KPA500 which is on 240VAC) by using
an AC-PWR module from WMR that allows the R40051 to power on/off the
power supply through a different port on the same R40051.  I use a 3A
power supply to power the R4005i (it is always on) and second 30A
power supply to power the K3-KAT500-Remote Rig-Antenna Genius.

The KPA500 is controlled separately through a Remote Rig RC-1216H that
provides a web-based screen mimicking the KPA500 front panel where I
can power on/off and set standby/operate through the interface as well
as see the LED meters,  As I use Remote Rig with the K3, the K3/0-mini
activates the K3 when the Mini is powered on.  I also use a second
RC-1216H to control my Green Heron rotor controller.

BTW, I did a copy/paste of the Activity Log remotely to provide this
information to you  as I use a PC in the shack to control the KAT500
and connect via VNC Client from my MacBook Pro.  I accessed the R4005i
directly through a web browser to be able to turn on/off the KAT500
with a MacBook Pro.  Thus, I don’t need a PC at my location to control
my station as I can use an iPhone or iPad to do it as well.  The
station is in Southeast Georgia and I’m currently in Rosllndale
(Boston), MA.

Hope this helps,

Barry, WD4ASW/1

Any suggestions?

Andy,
Thanks, but I'm trying to use KAT500-Remote Version 1.0.15.0 from
the Elecraft Web site, under "Logging, Control and Remote Software for

for control by multiple clients.  The actual commands sent to the tuner
are hidden by the software.

The power on command is P  not P;

 From the programmer's reference -

"BootLoader Command Reference
The KPA500 uses single character commands when in boot mode. Boot mode is the
state the KPA500 is
in when the rear panel power switch is in the ON position, while the main
firmware is not running. This
mode is used for starting up the KPA500 or downloading fresh firmware.
Bootloader commands must be
sent upper-case only.

P Power On
The P command will cause the KPA500 to perform internal firmware checks, then
execute the main
firmware to power up the amplifier. This is the command to use to remotely
power up the KPA500. No
response is sent from the KPA500 after receiving this command."

You could possibly look at Node Red which runs on a Raspberry Pi. I use it with
a KPA1500 and I know there is a flow (programming) for the KPA500 as well. The
Pi runs on your home network and you use a USB to serial cable from the KPA500
to the Pi. You can control and monitor the amp from any web browser.

If you are interested we have a Google Groups.io site
https://groups.io/g/nodered-hamradio

Here's a picture of my Node Red dashboard. The panel on the left is for the
KPA1500. The layout is customizable.

I use the KAT500 remote software and it works great. I have only one problem
with it, I can not tell if the power is on or off. This matters because when
the remote site looses power the state of the KAT500 is unknown and the program
does not indicate if the power is ON or OFF. Is there a way to tell?

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it works, but it
would be much better for a positive indication of the power state by button
color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC is applied, but not sure this is always observed. I have no other way
to see the remote site when this happens.

Any suggestions?

Lyn,
I have those docs, thanks.  I'm looking for the command line
switches for the remote host software.  I have the serial port/serial
speed, tcp port and time out.  I would like to know if there is any way
to control the mode when the software starts, I know how to change it
after its running, but I don't want to have to switch from "auto" back
to "man" everytime the remote cpu boots.

Thanks,

I have it set to start on bootup, connecting to a specific port at the

[Elecraft] KAT500 remote software

2020-09-09 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I'm running a remote station using a KAT500 and KPA500 setup.  I start
the kat500-Remote.exe program on system boot, with a batch file using
the commands:

rem Run the KAT500 remote control server, with parameters
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Elecraft\KAT500 Remote\
start /MIN KAT500-Remote.exe COM7 38400 4627 500

It works, but when the program starts it puts the KAT500 mode to Auto.
I want it to remain in MANUAL, is there a command line switch that will
do that?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software question

2020-08-06 Thread Paul Ecker
I have installed the KAT500 software on both my main shack PC and on to a
Win10 Notebook I use for remote ops. I want to be able to change antennas
on the KAT 500 from the Notebook PC. So I start the Remote software on the
shack PC, configure the Host data and then connect which it does. Then
start the software on the remote notebook. I fill in the shack pc 1p
address and port and then it connects. So thought I was doing ok, but not
really. I can change antennas using the KAT500 remote software on the main
pc but not the notebook, so I kind have it connected but backwards.

So can anyone help? What is the correct procedure for setting this up or
sequence to be able to control the KAT from my remote notebook? Should the
shack pc that the KAT 500 is connected to be the host?

"Once you turn it OFF with the front panel switch, it needs to be turned on
the same way. After that, yes the utility is fully functional."

I suspect the serial connection is getting confused and not properly
reconnecting in the power up/down situation. I see that between the K3 and
the Win4K3 suite frequently. If I power down the K3 I usually need to
restart the computer to get all the serial connections talking again.

This could well be an artifact of the specific serial connectors used.
PRoblems with one band of chip versus another are a constant source of
conversation.

As per the engineers and the experience of others, the behavior you're
seeing is not part of the design per se.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software and KPA500 remote software

2020-06-24 Thread Lyn Norstad
OK - the computer is Windows 7 Pro 64. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier.

Running tests today, it is inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
There is a sequence of events I can't quite discern that causes the failure.
It is basically as I described, but sometimes not. How's that for clear as
mud? There doesn't actually seem to be any scenario that is 100% predictable
either way. Maybe powering down the computer overnight has some bearing. In
any event, the rear power switch on the KPA is NEVER shut off.

If the KPA is shut down with the front button, and I try to turn it back on
with the utility and it fails - and then I go to the Port tab and Test
Communications, I generally get the "KPA waiting for power button or firmware
load. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s." message.

Then SOMETIMES after I click OK, and go back to the Operate tab, the KPA comes
turns on by itself. But sometimes not and I have to click the ON in the
utility.

Thanks Jack, and Dick for your help. This is obviously not a show-stopper,
just a minor aggravation. It's a "would be nice" but not a "top of list"
issue. It would be of more concern if it indicated an actual failure of
something physical (my KPA has been in to service twice in its first year).

A bit more information about how things work in the KPA500. The boot loader
runs on back-panel power-on or when the amplifier is powered off from the front
panel (or by command). It runs in power-down state, sleeping the processor as
much as possible. It looks for inputs from the front panel power button (which
is in parallel with a pin on the AUX/IO port) and the serial port. The serial
port has an abbreviated command set (described in the KPA500 Programmer’s
Reference) - the memory segment for bootstrap loader is full, and there was not
enough space to implement a full command set style protocol. The portion the
boot loader is fixed at 38400 bps. Reception of a ‘P’ character causes the
loader to check firmware memory, and if that check is positive it moves
execution to the main firmware, where the amplifier is initialized and brought
on-line. If the user has set a different data rate, it will be changed at this
point.

Because the boot command structure is different from the main commands it is
possible for the KPA Utility (or any control program) to get out of sync with
the KPA if the user powers down (or up) the KPA from the front panel power
button. The KPA Utility usually does a very good job of catching the situation
and moving to the proper mode. There is a slight difference between the three
versions - W4SMT has done a very good job of catching this in the Mac and Linux
versions, to the point where missing the change is very rare (as far as I have
seen). I will also say the the Window’s version is also rare at missing this,
but apparently there are times when it may miss things as Dick has stated.

In any case, as I noted, we test this scenario extensively. It does usually
work, as I noted previously. We just need to determine why Lyn is seeing it
fail.

Let's see if we can determine why you are seeing this behavior. What platform
are you using (Window, Mac, Linux), and exactly what is the scenario and
conditions you are seeing? In other words, please provide more info. I believe
K6KR has provided a bit of additional info. He wrote the KPA Utility for
Windows, and knows the computer side of things.

I wrote the code for both the bootstrap loader and the main program in the

with front power off) and main firmware (runs with power ON) with both the Mac
and Windows Utilities for each KPA500 firmware release as well as when the

original KPA500 and a newer one I bought a year ago. In all cases the KPA

With adequate information, we should be able to get things working properly for
you.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software and KPA500 remote software

2020-06-23 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Let's see if we can determine why you are seeing this behavior. What platform
are you using (Window, Mac, Linux), and exactly what is the scenario and
conditions you are seeing? In other words, please provide more info. I believe
K6KR has provided a bit of additional info. He wrote the KPA Utility for
Windows, and knows the computer side of things.

I wrote the code for both the bootstrap loader and the main program in the
KPA500. I tested all parts of the code operation for both bootstrap (which runs
with front power off) and main firmware (runs with power ON) with both the Mac
and Windows Utilities for each KPA500 firmware release as well as when the
Utilities are released. In fact I tested it earlier today with both the
original KPA500 and a newer one I bought a year ago. In all cases the KPA
Utility was able to turn on and off the KPAs properly.

With adequate information, we should be able to get things working properly for
you.

Lyn,

You can try restarting the utility; sometimes if you push the front
buttons (power on/off, standby), the app gets out of sync for the KPA500.

I meant to follow up on this sooner, but … so here’s what I found with the
KPA500 and KPA Utility Rev 1.13.7.16. First, the KPA500 rear power switch
must, of course, remain in the ON position at all times.

Once the KPA500 has been powered on with the Front panel switch (and
communications is set up properly between the computer and the KPA500), in

Then I can start the software from my laptop and connect to the remote and see
the KAT500 and KPA500.
I can have the software start at the hardware site, but how do I get it to
automatically connect to the hardware so the HOST mode is working?

Remote site is where the hardware is located, KPA500, KAT500, Radio.
Control site is where I am running the station from.
I can use something like TeamViewer to log into the Control site and click on the
"Host" button on the running software, but that is what I want to avoid.

I use RCForb for normal operation, but that only controls the radio and the
KPA500, it does not properly control the KAT500.
And when I'm doing a contest using WriteLog Remote I don't have RCForb running
so then I need the KPA500 remote to run the amp.

Setting up remote stations is a skill. There are many ways to do it, and each
need to be evaluated to get it done the way _you_ want.

By the way, to the original poster - if you are using a Mac, just add the two utilities
to the user’s "Login Items” list in the User’s & Groups System Preferences
pane. You just have to make sure that user is started up when the system powers up.
There are other ways to do this, but by far that is the easiest.

To have the programs start on boot, just drag them into the Windows "Startup"
folder (I am on Windows 7).

In Windows 10, search "Startup Apps."

Can these remote software's be in host mode on startup? I run a remote

Search for a recent email (a month or two ago) on this very topic from
Warren/KD4Z. He’s written a Windows script that does this very thing, available
at his github. Put it in your Windows Startup directory. Works great. Written
for KAT500, KPA500 and KPA1500, up to two instances, for those remote SO2R
stations. You edit the script with a few particulars of your station, all
described within the script.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software and KPA500 remote software

2020-06-10 Thread Gordon LaPoint

Jack,
I'm the original poster.  I may be misstating what I want to
accomplish.
At the remote station location I want the KPA500 Remote software to
start in host mode, with connection to the KPA500 hardware and the
KAT500 remote software to also start in host mode connected to the hardware.
Then I can start the software from my laptop and connect to the remote
and see the KAT500 and KPA500.
I can have the software start at the hardware site, but how do I get it
to automatically connect to the hardware so the HOST mode is working?

Remote site is where the hardware is located, KPA500, KAT500, Radio.
Control site is where I am running the station from.
I can use something like TeamViewer to log into the Control site and
click on the "Host" button on the running software, but that is what I
want to avoid.

I use RCForb for normal operation, but that only controls the radio and
the KPA500, it does not properly control the KAT500.
And when I'm doing a contest using WriteLog Remote I don't have RCForb
running so then I need the KPA500 remote to run the amp.

2020-06-09 Thread Andy Durbin
"But keep in mind that the KPA Utility will not connect to the KPA500 unless

That may be a bit misleading. Depends on what you mean by "powered on". I
consider the KPA500 to have 4 states:

Not powered
Powered but off
STBY
OPER

The utility can be connected to KPA500 in the "powered but off " state and the
KPA500 will accept a limited subset of serial commands. One of those
commands, P, will turn it on. P can be sent with the Utility "command tester
and will change the KPA500 state to STBY. At this point all the normal Utility
functions work.

I don't have experience with it, but the answer is on the page you
provided a link to:

"Using Lantronix supplied Com Port Redirector software, Windows®
device applications not designed for network communications are
re-directed to communicate to devices connected to the UDS2100."

"Built into the included Com Port Redirector software, TruPort®
technology enables Windows-based applications to access and control
serial ports on the UDS2100 as if they were actually local PC serial
ports."

So you need to install that (Com Port Redirector software) on your
Windows PC. It appears to be available at:

https://www.lantronix.com/products/com-port-redirector/

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote

2019-11-10 Thread Michael Walker
Hi Hans

We need more information.

If you are using the remote client, there are a few things to set up.

First, the local software needs to be running on the PC that the AMP is
connected to

Have a look at the Port Number that the KPA500 software is listening on.
The default should work ok.

Now, run the same software on the remote PC and when you start it up, you
need specify the IP address and the port of the remote PC. If you have a
VPN setup, that is great. If not, then you need to do a port forward
through your router and you need to know the IP address of your Router.

This is pretty high level and I do not know your network expertise. If
you understand all I wrote, then you will know what to do.

If not, then you will need a bunch more details from us.

It does work as I have used it for years like that.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software

2018-01-11 Thread ab2tc
Hi Jack and Don,

As Ron says, VFWD and VRFL are related to forward and reflected power.
Actually, they are roughly proportional to forward and reflected *voltage*.
I say roughly because there is some nonlinearity from the rectifier diodes,
especially at low power. The constant of proportionality is somewhat
dependent on frequency, power level *and * has some unit to unit
variability. That's the stated reason why Elecraft chose not to make any
estimation of actual power levels. But SWR is easily calculated b y the
formula:

VSWR = (VFWD+VRFL) / (VFWD-VRFL)

This formula factors out all the variability mentioned above except the
diode nonlinearity.

In your case this works out as (225+3) / (225-3) = 1.03

Since SWR is all that is required to be known in an autotuner, that's all
the KAT500 is calculating. Actually the calculated SWR doesn't even have to
be very accurate as long is it a monotonic function (no dips or peaks) of
the actual SWR.

To be fair, the KAT500 does need an estimate of forward power since that is
being used to fault if it is too high, but it doesn't have to very accurate.
The forward power is proportional to VFWD squared.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote software

2018-01-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jack,

For any wattmeter (the one in the KAT500 included), the VFWD and VRFL
values are related to forward power and reflected power. Those are raw
numbers and some math is required to calculate the actual power and SWR.

VRFL subtracted from VFWD can be used to computer the power into the
load (in this case the input to the KAT500), but you need to know the
scaling factor that may be unique to the wattmeter.

Similarly, if you divide VRFL by VFWD, you will obtain a result that is
related to the SWR.

See the formulas associated with SWR in most any book dealing with
antennas and transmission lines.

Sorry, but you have completely lost me there I am not up on terminology

In my simple language, I’ll have PC’s at both ends, with the remote PC

[Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Utility

2015-08-19 Thread Wes (N7WS)
I'm trying to use the KAT500 Remote Utility and having an issue. I've used this

The current version 1.0.9.0 connects to the KAT500 normally, briefly displays
the (correct) state of the tuner then almost immediately crashes. Can anyone
else verify this and/or offer a fix?

I made a small and simple tool for the Elecraft tuner KAT500. It is NOT a
replacement of the Elecraft KAT500 Utility application. It duplicates the
controls and indications from the front panel and it shows some internals. Now
you can locate your tuner on a more convenience place.

Hi,

Sure, the wireless connection is using a Lantronix WiFi serial server. I
think they have only model, but I don't have the model number in my head.
I'll look it up when I get home. It supports two serial ports as you can see
in the pictures. Note that the serial connection over the Lantronix and is
my sole control of the box (other than disconnecting the extension cord for
power). No Aux bus. I don't find this terribly limiting. Maybe somebody can
find a way to make a bridge between the Aux bus and a serial port.

The shiny box contains a homemade duplexer with a split frequency of 10MHz.
It is currently used to feed an 80m and a 15m antenna from port 3 (the
common port is on the back of the box and you can see the port 3 cable
looping around to the back). It's working very nicely.

Hi,

Yes, the power supply is overkill but I don't have anything between tiny and
noisy walwarts and that size. The power supply was evicted from the shack
anyway because of the fan noise (acoustic, electrically that PS is very
quiet), so it was just sitting there anyway. No other gadgets not visible in

[Elecraft] KAT500 remote installation

2013-04-14 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

It's been quiet on the KAT500 front lately. Finally the weather has been
agreeable enough for me to tidy up my hasty December installation. Here are
some pictures after spring cleaning. If you think it's messy now, you should
have seen it before.

[Elecraft] [KAT500] remote in cold weather

2013-01-02 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

We're down to 15F here and no problems using the remotely mounted KAT500.
E51E still coming in here good at 21295. G5RV antenna through tuner is still
best antenna (compared to resonant 15m dipole).

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Remote location photos

Hi all,

It finally stopped snowing here so I snuck out in the back yard snapping a
couple of photos of the remote box. I didn't want to disturb the snowpack so
I didn't open the hatch for an inside view. Later when the snow is gone.
It's a jumbled mess in there. Getting stuff in there through the small hatch
and connect together in the freezing cold is difficult so I had no time to
make it neat.

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Remote tuner now at 25F

2012-12-26 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

Just a short report after returning from celbrating Christmas at Grandma's
farm and temperatures have dropped considerably. Tuner is doing great -
memorized settings are working with no noticeable drift in SWR readings. Of
course 25F is nothing extreme around here, but it's far from room
temperature.

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Remote KAT500

2012-12-11 Thread ab2tc
Hi again,

Temperature has dropped to 32F here in CNY and the KAT500 is coping well
with it. SWR, both as measured by the KAT500 and also as measured in the
shack has not shifted noticeably on the 2 bands I have tried, 20m and 17m.
So far it is measuring up to my expectations. On 17m the raw SWR is 10.2:1
so the tuner has a little work to do. The KAT500 meaured SWR 1.00:1 and the
shack LP-100A measures 1.17:1.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote operation

2012-12-09 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

I might try a delta loop in the spring. CNY weather is not conducive to
antenna work riight now. I have now hooked up two more antennas, resonant
dipoles for 10 and 15m. I am happy as a blast that I got the remote KAT500
installed before winter. The rollout of the KAT500 has been surprisingly
snappy.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote operation

2012-12-08 Thread n5ge

Knut,

I did what Don suggests to match my MARS NVIS Loop which is fed with
450 ohm ladder-line and has a ten foot 450 ohm ladder-line stub
diagonally opposite the fed corner, but added 75 ohm coax rather than
50 ohm.

I made three lengths of RG11, 6.5 feet, 6 feet and 9 feet. With
those three lengths you can try 6.5 feet, 12.5 feet, 15.5 feet and
21.5 feet to test with. After testing I ended up with 15.5 feet
which I coiled up between the 4:1 balun and the 50 ohm coax feeding
the KAT500 and KPA500. I used an AIM 4170 analyzer and looked at SWR
and Rs readings.

When you do that you compare the SWR and Rs value at a given
frequency and if the SWR is > Rs you divide SWR by Rs looking for a
value of < 10 If the value is < 10 the KAT500 can tune it at high
power. On the other hand if the Rs is > SWR you divide the Rs by the
SWR also looking for a value of < 10.

When you have value at each of the frequencies within desired range
of less than 10 The KAT500 will tune them.

My loop has 388 feet of wire in it and will tune with the KAT500 from
3.5 to 10.5MHz, except close to the K3 IF frequency, which can't be
used anyway.

Good luck with your antenna trimming!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote operation

2012-12-07 Thread Don Wilhelm

Knut,

You might try adding or subtracting feedline at the shack end of the
feedline to bring the SWR down on those bands. I would suggest
experimenting with an antenna analyzer rather than the tuner - you will
be able to see which way to go for making improvement.

The fact is that the feedline with SWR will act as an impedance
transformer, and it will be more of a transformer on bands with high SWR
than on the bands that are better matched.

Some experimentation may be in order.

and the immediately go back into TX. That will enter the fine tune mode.

I finally managed to get the B&B software to work and I am now in full
control of the box from the shack using the utility. Wonderful. I tried the

20W carrier when I click on the tune button again? It never seems to want to

2012-12-06 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

I 've got my new KAT500 into my remote location. Unfortunately the software
associated with my B&B Ethernet server decided to act up so I have not been
able to talk to it. I have temporarily put it in the auto mode and it's
mostly working nicely. It did not achieve a very good SWR on some segments
of 80m as has been reported by other people. On all other bands I have
better than 1.3:1.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Version

2012-09-29 Thread Wes Stewart
Semantics.   When I say, "It's not necessarily a good one", I mean that just
because a match is achieved, it doesn't mean that one should accept the
situation.  Even though the L-network offers the lowest loss (it doesn't
always) it doesn't mean it is "low loss", in fact the loss can be quite high.
A simple change in transmission line length might be beneficial.

I can demonstrate that two L-networks in series, using the same component
unloaded Qs, can offer (very) slightly lower loss that a single L-network doing
the same transformation.  It's often assumed, incorrectly, that the fewer
components, the better.  Not true.

Hi,

That's not true. The L network's only solution is the lowest Q possible,
meaning it will have the lowest tuner loss possible and the widest
bandwidth. And if the capacitor and inductor steps are made small enough, a
1.0:1 solution is always possible. The fact that many tuners give up once
the SWR is below 2.0 or 1.5 is merely a shortcoming in their tuning
algorithms. I am having high hopes for the KAT500. Is anything known on how
many bits of L and C resolution is there?

Dave,

I always use TL Details whicj can be downloaded here at wbsite of AC6LA
: http://www.ac6la.com/tldetails.html

It is easy to use.
Choose the cable that you are using, set the frequency, set the line
length and set an estiimate of the impedance at the load.
If you donot know that and your swr meter says 1:3, then set R tot 150.
This makes the program calculate with SWR 3

Then you can read the loss and some other nice things from this very
nice little tool.
It has been on my computers for a very long time, and has become a
standard program for me to install on my computer.

What Don says is true as far as it goes.  The L-network tuner has only one
solution, but it isn't necessarily a good one.

Way back in 1998 when correspondence was via typewriter and snail mail, I went
around with Dean Straw, N6BV, then Editor of the ARRL Antenna Book, about tuner
losses.  This was in conjunction with the editing of my paper, "Balanced
Transmission Lines in Current Amateur Practice" that appeared in the Sixth
Edition of the ARRL Antenna Compendium.

Remarkably (coincidence I'm sure ;) it wasn't long before favored authors were
contributing articles to QST about how to measure tuner losses and TLW was
written.

Tuner and line losses really do matter.

Hi,

I am one of those customers interested in outdoors, remote location of the
KAT500. I have a suspicion that I may be too late in the ordering queue (a
day and a half or so after orders opened) that I may not be able do much
experimentation before winter weather sets in, but one can always hope. One
of the challenges will be to communicate with it over a distance of about
100' and I expect I have to use an Ethernet serial server that I already
possess.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Version

2012-09-20 Thread Brian Alsop
David,

It's worth trying to figure out TLW.
Steps are basically this for coax loss:
1) Select coax type
2) Input length
3) Input frequency.

The fun begins when one looks at the loss of the coax for various loads.
Input 50 ohms first. That will give you the coax loss when matched.
Then input other values and you will see total loss including the mismatch.

Here are some examples using 125' of LMR600
20M matched .33 db
20M 10 ohms .805 db
20M 250 ohms .8 db
20M 500 ohms 1.43 db

10M matched .506 db
10M 10 ohms 1.19 db
10M 250 ohm 1.15 db
10M 500 ohms 2.0 db

I wouldn't want to put a hacksaw to that beautiful (and expensive) coax
to "improve things". Fittings aren't cheap either. Cutting it in half
would pick up a max of 1 db in the above cases. In most cases it is
less than 0.5 db. 1db is the minimum discernible signal level change a
human can detect.

TLW can do a lot more than the above.

I have been trying to decide between the KAT500... and a remote tuner at the
base of my 30' vertical. I have measured the SWR on each band, at the shack
end of my 125' of LMR600. If I take that length, frequency and SWR
information and plug it into the chart for SWR loss of LMR600, I can see
what my loss is on each band... but I am not sure that tells the entire
story.

Intuitively it seems that I want the ATU as close to the antenna as
possible. I could shorten my feedline to about 65'. I could mount an ATU
just inside my basement at about 30' from the antenna (and avoid a
weatherproof box - as long as the ATU does not need to be seen or touched),
or I could mount it at the base of the antenna, but that would be very much
more challenging.

Is the SWR loss, based on my cable type, length & frequency all I need
consider, or am I missing something?

Some people have told me that I need consider nothing else... others have
said that "tuner loss" is critical, and that will be greater than the line
loss. That sounds bogus to me, but I really don't know.

I also know that the ATU in my K3 can make the rig very happy on 80 through
6 with this antenna and 125' of cable... but I don't know if matching the
antenna at the end of 1', 30' or 65' will be harder, or easier.

It was suggested that the TLW program by N6BV, that is packaged with the
ARRL Antenna Book would help, but I have not been able to figure out how to
use it, and can find no instructions for that program.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Version

2012-09-20 Thread David Bunte
I have been trying to decide between the KAT500... and a remote tuner at
the base of my 30' vertical. I have measured the SWR on each band, at the
shack end of my 125' of LMR600.

2012-09-20 Thread Wayne Burdick
It may be possible to remote the KAT500 with additional control
firmware and an appropriate weather-proof enclosure. We haven't done
any testing of this idea yet, but once we start shipping KAT500s,
we'll work with a few customers who want to experiment with this to
see what we can do to facilitate it.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Version

2012-09-20 Thread Doug Faunt
I will note that at least one thing stated below is no longer the case-
the size.
And the different form factor may make a remote model more difficult.
But I'm hoping that will not be a problem.

Did they actually say they were going to do a remote version? That's
not trivial like put it in a sealed box and you're done. People have
asked about it, but I don't recall them saying it was on the list.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Refresh?

2012-08-03 Thread Sean Logghe
Now that I have moved on to the "hold my breath until UPS shows up" phase of
my KX3 experience, and the delivery estimate for the KAT500 has been reset
to Aug.31 - Sep. 7, and Eric is (apparently) back from vacation, :-) , I
thought I might bring my earlier request back to the top-o-the-heap.

I suspect this falls in Eric's court and won't get a response until he digs
out from under the "post-vacation blues" but add my voice to the requests
for any update information about a remote version of the KAT500 antenna
tuner.

Any availability/delivery information would be great. Even negative info,
like "definitely not before 1/1/13" for example.

Of course, potential functional descriptions would be exciting, as well.

I know, I must have a masochistic streak as I wait patiently in the queue
for my ordered KX3 (March 2nd), and ordered KAT500 (Dayton). (That's still
on track for 15 AUG, right?) And now I want to tee up another product to
wait for? :-) Oy vey! But, contest season approaches and decisions beg to
be made.

They say patience is a virtue so I must be very virtuous, or maybe I am the
exception that proves the rule? ;) (Take that however you wish!)

So here is a plea for any information that your business plan allows you to
share.

Thanks and best regards,

[Elecraft] KAT500 (remote autotuner) Features

2010-12-19 Thread Craig D. Smith
A few days ago AC0LP suggested a mini-module kit for the purpose of sharing
the coax with 12V control line(s) - an enhanced bias T, essentially. N1AL
followed up with a nifty design he had used for selecting up to four remote
antennas without running additional conductors - Thanks Alan!

It seems that there would be a significant demand for this type of thing for
those folks who purchase the upcoming KAT500 remote tuner (me, for
instance). I'd like to suggest integrating this type of capability into the
tuner/controller design. The hardware could be optional so that only those
who use it need to pay for it - perhaps a second remote box connected to the
tuner box?

Basic functionality: Ability to select a number (4 or 6?) of remote
antennas from the K3 (or in-shack KAT500 controller if one is used).
Ideally the user should have ability to do some mapping of the selection vs.
band, etc. Only connection to the remote tuner should be the single coax.
Also provide a 12V signal at the remote box for each antenna as it is
selected so that the user can power another relay or two for additional
configuration if needed. For example, to common the conductors of an
open-wire line feeding a doublet so that it becomes a Marconi vertical. All
features should work with either the KPA500 or a barefoot K3.

Other suggestions?

2011 could be a fun year ;>)

73 Craig AC0DS
