No, it just makes the programmed feature when you press "start".

It uses a set of G-code subroutines that take the various dimensions
as input and then run a fixed cycle.

You can't assemble them into a program, though often you can leave the
turn, face, radius, thread set up and run them in sequence.

It's really a setup for one-offs, typically working from a 2D drawing.

ok gmccapy works with your setup.

i have been just having a play for the last 10 mins. does your generators

currently its like there is no program just almost jogging going on behind
the scenes

That may be, and thaks for the clarification, but at my age, and the
amount of giddyup left, i don't think I'll try to learn a new system. I
am currently running LCNC from the buildbot (master IOW) on 3 wintel
boxes, and building LCNC on an rpi4, for the rpi4, running an 11x54

I'm now 86, and alone having lost my Mrs to COPD last Pearl Harbor Day,
and was using what little giddyup I have left to start installing a new
vinyl fence around my place, and fighting with a pin oaks roots plus an
old fence post, I was trying to pry out a piece of an old post that must
haven been treated really well. Using an 8 foot 1" steel bar I'd

33 yo old post's remains, and the 3" tamping pad on the other end of it
came back and smashed dead center into the pacemaker I had put in early

but the monitor wasn't getting it. So I went out to the Dr's office,
and his machine said it was working fine, and I should come home and do
a reboot of the monitor, which restored that. So I guess I'm as ok as a

Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-02 Thread Chris Albertson
grbl is best compared to the "Marlin" software that drives most 3D
printers. Both are very different from LCNC. Marlin and grbl are really
similar in many ways.
1) Marlin and grbl both run on Arduino, even the low-end "Uno".
2) They are VERY efficient because the configuration is done in the dot.h
file and then the system is recompiled.
3) grbl only drives 3-axis machines that use stepper motors
4) like Marlin, but unlike LCNC, software stepping is very accurate and
fast. Because both grbl and Marlin run on bare metal with no OS.
5) grbl has only the most primitive user interface -- code letters you type
into a serial terminal, no screen of any kind. However this s a feature,
any GUI would have to be done on a PC in a completely separate program.

The main limitation is (1) stepper motors only and (2) three-axis only.
One huge advantage over LCNC is there is zero learning curve and nothing
to configure because there are no config files.

I use them for more than 90% of the stuff I make. I have to be making
dozens of somethin, or have unusually complex curves, to bother with
actual G-code programs.

The zip file in the forum post should be all ready to go in Touchy.
They are also available in a Gmoccapy sample config in the standard

Grbl is quite capable, people get hung up on the lack of some G codes and
tool changes but for the most part in small shops and hobbyists it makes
little difference. Even for thread milling and drilling there are other
options to generate gcode. Fusion360 has a post for Grbl so it is possible
to stay within its limits.

Grbl is certainly much easier to install than IinuxCNC so if it does enough
then that is a plus in my opinion. Grbl gets few updates because in the main
it is supported by 1 person who is busy with life.

That is totally on the person who put it on Github, there are plenty of ways
to illustrate and describe what a project is. That is what the Wiki section
is for. I find the terse method rather prevalent amongst FOSS projects. Just
like the 'who needs a manual, just read the code' approach.

This wiki e.g. shows (IMHO) at a glance what you are looking at:

Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-02 Thread Robert Murphy

Sorry been busy today and just saw this.

I bought a 2nd hand touch screen (3M Microtouch). A part from being
cheap, $25 AUD I figured it would be a fairly rugged piece of kit (very
little use). So it's only 17" but with the lack of space in my work area
it fits right in. Touch a little bit of fiddling to calibrate but I
found a great python3 base utility that worked wonders.

I always liked the rotary click wheel on many CRT monitors. Nice big wheel with
an offset dimple. Put fingertip in dimple and push to
get the menu, spin to highlight the configuration option then push. Spin again
to select (for example) vertical position then push and
spin to move the raster up or down. No slower (for me it was faster) than a mouse
interface with "spin" controls that scroll a list or
change a number. Only took me a few seconds to have a CRT's image all tweaked.
That's why people lamented the loss of the
clickwheel on iPods. It was FAST, easy to use, and didn't need eyes on it to be
able to use it.

My current LCD has five buttons on the back. Only the bottom one (on/off) has a
tiny bump. The other four are ??? and after the
menu is brought up, their positions don't align with the order of the menu
selections so one is literally poking around blindly trying to
find what does what. Even a row of clearly labeled buttons on the front of a
monitor was slower than a click wheel. If TV and monitor
designers want a "blind poking" physical interface tucked around on the back
side, they should bring back the click wheel. I have a
couple of Samsung TVs that have, of all things, a tiny joystick *and* some
buttons on the back. Now that is a crazy thing.

2021-06-02 Thread Frank Tkalcevic
That's what I've based my wizards on. I started using that version, but had
trouble laying out the screen using python and the toolkit it used. I ended
up writing a c++ version with preview, but that never got pass a beta
version.

My old lathe wizards are here...

https://github.com/ftkalcevic/LinuxCNC/tree/gwiz2/contrib/gwiz2/wizards/lath
e_wizards/lathe/3_turning

They are basically a...
* desc - description file
* config - list of parameters for the wizard
* *.ngc - gcode implementation of the wizard
* screen.png - image to display with the wizard.

There are other wizard projects that I've seen on the forum.

And this nicely demo's github's total lack of a way to see what this
project does. I have 2 of my 4 machines loaded up and only half working
now because changes in linuxcnc have disabled camview and I need to take
it back out of my configs. I finally found a camera that works, for a
$100 bill and the next update killed it again. I guess cameras are not
supposed to be used as edge finders etc with LinuxCNC?

If that is indeed the case, please tell me why its a bad idea.

There would I suspect, be a lot more interest in such as this link if
thumbnail jpg's of the wizards looks were available so we could see if
its usuable for us.

It would be good to get something set up that is part of the install iso
for axis maybe for the wizards

The version of touchy I'm running doesn't have the 3d preview. I'm using
it on a lathe and typically run wizards, so I don't miss the preview.

I have an MGP type jog wheel and some buttons mounted around the frame,
connected via a homemade USB HID controller. The jog wheel and buttons are
wired up like they were a pendant.

Does Touchy now have the 3D preview that Jon mentioned? Are you using a

which has a 100 PPR encoder and buttons and uses MODBUS to talk to MACH3.

I think there's a driver for it under LinuxCNC. Again something like that
with buttons along a standard monitor with the buttons taking the place of
the touch screen inputs. Whether it be ModBus or CAN with CANopen then
becomes a moot point.Still just 4 wires for power, ground and coms up
to the display.

If I wanted to set up a Pi4 with LinuxCNC and a touch screen is there any
particular one that jumps out as the best solution?

And with an LCD display/touch screen other than 'axis' what is a more usable
screen?

You may want to use "touchy" with a touch screen, it is
designed for that.
You need a red and a green button and a jog dial, too. With
that, you can
pretty much control the system with no keyboard at all. The
jog dial can be used to scroll through menus like a scroll
wheel on a mouse. The reason I did not like it is because
there was no 3D preview of the G-code program. That has
been very helpful when setting up and to verify where
the origin is, and that you have loaded the right program.
I think touchy now has a 3D preview tab as well.

Re: [Emc-users] Touch screen for LinuxCNC

2021-06-01 Thread John Dammeyer
Personally I like the tactile feedback of a button that moves. But moving from
buttons over to a mouse to then select entries is tedious so I can see either a
number of buttons or a touch screen for that sort of thing.

For the same reason I really detest those interfaces based on Arduino's that,
due to limited I/O use a rotary knob and button to select from all sorts of
menus. Or worse test enter each digit one at a time using the rotary knob.
Shudder

Way back HP had the right idea with what they called soft keys. A row of
mechanical buttons along the edges of the screen to select options displayed
beside the button. My Tek scope has those and the stupid rotary knobs.
Invariably since they have two of those I tend to choose the wrong one first.

But to design such a user screen for LinuxCNC implies you also have to provide
the buttons (and maybe a knob). Easy to do with CANopen or ModBus or if you
have one of the high i/o count MESA boards but then you are also running a
bundle of wires up rather than a network cable.

Thanks for the feedback.

I favor the Touchy interface. You will need jog buttons and any other
button that could possibly cause machine motion. Touchy was written to not
allow machine motion from the touchscreen.

I have used these before. The USB version just works out of the box with
every Linux distribution I have tried. In fact they work before Linux is
booted up on most of them. The serial ones work just fine but you need the
software from ELO(Microtouch now I think). They have the software and are
happy to help you configure it. (at least they used to be very helpful)

I have an older wired Pendant like this one.
https://www.amazon.ca/Wireless-Mach3-Pendant-Handwheel-Mac-Mach/dp/B00SH0V1P8

I waffle back and forth between keyboard operations and the pendant. I'm not
sure how useful the touch screen would be relative to a pendant and keyboard.
At some point typing in G-Code end up being done.

Would the common operations that are on the touch screen be any more difficult
if instead there was a panel of buttons right beside the screen? Like the jog
buttons or is it easiest right on the display?

That's the one. I was getting them for 189/199usd before the chip shortage.

I use gmoccapy on my lathe and alternate between gmoccapy and probe basic
on my router. Now that dragon has a 1920 option, I may try that as well. I
tinker, so I'm forever trying new stuff.

What are you using for the display software?
[DISPLAY]
DISPLAY = axis
