 Lightyear One - At Home
]

KATWIJK, Netherlands, June 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Lightyear, a pioneer in
clean mobility, introduced the first long-range solar car today. The
prototype was presented to investors, customers, partners and press at dawn
in Katwijk, the Netherlands. "This moment represents a new era of driving,"
said Lex Hoefsloot, CEO and co-founder of Lightyear.

Lightyear was founded in 2016 by alumni of Solar Team Eindhoven, which won
the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Since the launch, Lightyear has
received awards, grants and support from key investors. This allowed them to
develop a prototype for the first long-range solar car in just two years.
Lightyear One has been engineered to optimize efficiency and safety. It has
a longer battery range than its competitors and charges whenever it's in the
sun.

"Climate change is such a frightening development that it's almost
paralyzing," remarked Hoefsloot. "We decided to do the opposite; as
engineers, we believed we could do something. Lightyear One represents an
opportunity to change mobility for the better."

And this is just the beginning. "Since new technology has a high unit cost,
we have to start in an exclusive market. The next models we plan to develop
will have a significantly lower purchase price. In addition, future models
will be provided to autonomous and shared car fleets, so the purchase price
can be divided amongst a large group of users. Combined with the low
operating costs of the vehicle, we aim to provide premium mobility for a low
price per kilometer."

About Lightyear
Lightyear's mission is to make clean mobility available to everyone,
everywhere. Lightyear develops electric cars with energy-efficient design
and integrated solar cells. Drivers could go up to 20,000 kilometers a year
on the sun, depending on the climate. The fast-growing company was founded
in 2016 and now has more than 100 employees. The team is a mix of young
talent and experience from the automotive industry, including former
employees of Tesla and Ferrari. Lightyear also opened its own production
facility in Helmond. In less than two years, the company has raised over 20
million euros from reservations, investments and grants. They were awarded
CES Climate Change Innovator, Postcode Lottery Green Challenge Finalist,
and, recently, Lightyear received funding from the European Union's Horizon
2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 848620.

]

YOKOHAMA--Classic cars such as the Volkswagen Beetle are getting reborn as
an eco-friendly electric vehicle, thanks to automobile lover Osamu Furukawa.

Furukawa, president of Yokohama-based Oz Corp., converts gas-powered
automobiles into vehicles running on electric power.

One such model is the e-Bug, an electric car based on the old version of the
iconic Beetle, which was produced for more than half a century until 2003.

The Beetle’s round body and unique flapping engine sounds have long hooked
the hearts of motorists and car enthusiasts.

The exterior and interior of the e-Bug, created and sold by Oz, located in
Tsuzuki Ward, are almost the same as those of the original Beetle.

The only difference is the sound of the engine. When the gas pedal is
pressed, smooth engine sounds are elicited and the vehicle starts moving
slowly. That is because the engine has been replaced with an electric motor.

“The steering wheel is heavy and the motorist can feel vibrations while
driving just in the same manner as the original Beetle,” said Furukawa, 48,
while manipulating the wheel of an e-Bug.

Furukawa, an automobile buff, founded a company to sell auto parts and
remodeled cars in his 20s. At that time, consumers wanted to upgrade their
vehicles to improve their driving performance.

But when minivans grew in popularity, Furukawa thought that cars would
someday be used merely for transportation, and not a kind of fashion
statement or a way to express oneself.

As gas-electric hybrid vehicles were released in succession, he predicted
that the eco-friendly feature could become more important than engine
horsepower and acceleration in the future.

Deliberating what kind of business he should operate as a car remodeling
agent in such an environmentally conscious era, Furukawa hit upon the idea
of turning commercially available gas-powered cars into electric ones.

Furukawa bought the required parts from the United States and finished a
demonstration vehicle in 2010. After that, he marketed a kit to remodel
minivehicles into electric cars.

But the upgrade kit’s price of more than 1 million yen ($9,200) was too
expensive for motorists to convert ordinary minivehicles.

“I thought additional value must be added to establish the project as a
business,” said Furukawa.

Acting on that thought, Furukawa started engaging in converting vintage cars
into electric vehicles.

The elegant designs of time-tested automobiles are so appealing that a lot
of owners hesitate to scrap their vehicles even after they have repeatedly
broken down and been repaired.

Furukawa started with Messerschmitt, Isetta and other renowned classic
models under the electric car remodeling project, and the number of orders
gradually increased.

But the conversion costs of those vehicles are high because those electric
cars are made to order.

To enable customers to enjoy driving classic-car-turned electric vehicles
more easily, Furukawa decided to sell the ready-made e-Bug model.

While the basic e-Bug’s maximum driving range of 70 to 90 kilometers would
be shortened when equipped with an air-conditioning unit, the e-Bug
generates little noise and breaks down less frequently.

Even those who worry about the mechanics of automobiles can drive the
electric model with peace of mind, according to Furukawa.

“The e-Bug can be called a futuristic classic car because the model boasts
the same design as the Beetle in olden days but has the latest eco-friendly
features and is not often plagued by mechanical problems, unlike aged
vehicles,” Furukawa said.

Prices of the e-Bug, which differ depending on the battery capacity and
whether the car is equipped with a quick-charging function, start from 2.65
million yen.

Furukawa explained his future goal.

“Few agencies in Japan offer electric car conversion services,” Furukawa
said. “I want to make the business a well-established genre.”

Elon Musk @elonmusk
Starting next month, Tesla will charge $1000 for color black (same price as
silver)
1:17 PM - Jun 19, 2019
]

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla is going to increase the price of its
black paint option, which was until now the only standard paint color for
the Model 3, S, and X.

A white paint option is going to become the new standard paint option.

“Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it
is black,” that’s what Henry Ford supposedly said when asked why Ford was
not offering different colors for the Model T.

When first launching the Model 3, Tesla only made a black color option
standard and everything cost a $1,000 or more premium – sort of following in
FOrd’s footstep.

Much like Ford’s obsession with efficiency, Tesla also limited the option to
streamline production.

Later, Tesla also eliminated some other paint options to increase production
efficiency.

Now Musk says that black is going to also cost an additional $1,000:

It was a weird way to announce the change since it basically disguised an
overall base price increase of $1,000 on Model 3 and across its lineup, but
the CEO later confirmed that Tesla will have another “simple white” color
option.

Tesla already offers a white, but it’s a “Pearl White Multi-Coat”, which
comes with a $1,500 premium for Model 3 and $2,000 for Model S and Model X.

The automaker would have to introduce a new white.

In the past, Tesla was offering a standard white for Model S and Model X.

Electrek’s Take
This is an interesting move.

Black and white are the two most popular colors for cars in the US:

Therefore, it shouldn’t have a major impact long term. Of course, it will
depend on how good the “simple white” paint that Tesla will come out with,
but I expect that it will be just fine.

In the short term though, it should help give a slight boost to sales, which
I believe is the goal of this announcement since Elon put a deadline at the
end of the quarter for the change.

Buyers on the fence who were planning to buy the standard black have a new
incentive to buy now otherwise they will see the price of their
configuration increase by $1,000.

[EVDL] EVLN: Waymo Road-Tests auton iPace EV fleet

2019-06-29 Thread brucedp5 via EV

https://www.pymnts.com/innovation/2019/waymo-road-tests-self-driving-jaguar/
Waymo Road-Tests Self-Driving Jaguar
June 17, 2019

After launching a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover, Waymo, the
self-driving vehicle unit of Alphabet, has now started testing self-driving
Jaguar I-Pace vehicles on public streets.

Back in March, Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover announced they were teaming up to
create the world’s first high-end, electric, fully self-driving vehicle for
Waymo’s transportation service.

Waymo said at the time that the new self-driving vehicle, dubbed I-PACE,
will combine Jaguar’s knack for design with self-driving technology by
Waymo, all developed in-house. Waymo plans to add up to 20,000 I-PACE
vehicles to its fleet over the next few years, which it said is enough to
drive around 1 million trips in a typical day, offering its self-driving
services to communities around the country.

“At Waymo, we’ve been building the world’s most experienced driver: a safe,
skillful and savvy chauffeur that can take people and things from A to B at
the push of a button,” the company wrote in the blog post. “Imagine a world
where you can take a self-driving minivan to the baseball game with family
and a self-driving I-PACE home after a night out — in both cases, a car
perfectly suited for your needs. That’s the world we’re building.”

Waymo said the new self-driving I-PACE vehicles will begin tests later in
2018 and will soon play an important role in the company’s driverless
transportation service.

Now according to TechCrunch, the vehicle — with a safety driver behind the
wheel — is being tested around Waymo’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.
Waymo confirmed the report.

Waymo received its first three I-Paces in July 2018. The cars have been
driven around the San Francisco Bay Area collecting data, but not in
autonomous mode. Waymo plans to launch the I-Pace vehicles into its
self-driving ride-hailing fleet next year.

“This is just the beginning. The self-driving products of the future will be
designed around passengers, not drivers. That means riders will be able to
choose from a broad array of options that will match their very specific
needs: one for working remotely as you commute, one for dining with friends,
even one designed for napping! The ultimate goal: with Waymo as the driver,
products tailored for every purpose and every trip,” the post in March
stated.

Volvo Trucks - Autonomous vehicle Vera’s first assignment
]

To start, Volvo's Vera will ferry goods from a logistics center to a port in
Gothenburg, Sweden. But more Veras will eventually mean fewer trucking jobs.

Volvo is ready to put its first autonomous, fully electric truck to the
test. With the assistance of shipping company DFDS, the vehicle, known as
Vera, will ferry goods from a logistics center to a port in Gothenburg,
Sweden.

The car maker has been experimenting with fuel-efficient, driverless
vehicles for the last several years, and first teased Vera in September.
It's optimal for short-range heavy-load jobs. The truck follows a
predetermined route and is connected to a control center and cloud network.
Vera pinpoints its position down to the centimeter, enabling it to detect
sudden and minute changes in its environment—a good thing since part of
Vera's route takes it on public roads.

"The transport system we are developing can be an important complement to
today's solutions and can help meet many of the challenges faced by society,
transport companies, and transport buyers," Claes Nilsson, President of
Volvo Trucks, said in a statement.

Volvo eventually wants to expand and include multiple autonomous trucks in
its operation. It made Vera compatible with most existing trailers and load
carriers to take advantage of existing infrastructure. A fleet of Veras
would ideally increase predictability and minimize unnecessary downtime,
Volvo says.

More Veras would also mean fewer truckers, which Volvo positions as
positive, citing the widespread belief that the industry is dying. But
according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that's a
misconception, especially for short-distance drivers, who would be most
affected by Volvo's new technology.

Fortunately for currently employed drivers, it'll likely be a while before
Vera becomes ubiquitous. Volvo's statement concludes with a vague promise to
extend the vehicle's availability and functionality in "the near future."

(Bloomberg) -- A zero-emission Hummer sounds as paradoxical as non-alcoholic
whiskey, but General Motors Co. is mulling over the idea of building an
electric vehicle that would bring the defunct gas-guzzling brand back to
life.

For now, it’s just an idea GM is considering as it plans which vehicles will
be included in a fleet of electrified SUVs and trucks, say people familiar
with the matter. The Hummer name has surfaced as way to tap growing demand
for rugged SUVs with off-road capabilities, while avoiding the
gasoline-burning image that made the brand something of a pariah a decade
ago, said the people, who asked not to be named because the conversations
are private.

Electric Hummer chatter comes as GM is looking to transform itself from a
conventional, gas-powered-vehicle maker into what Chief Executive Officer
Mary Barra calls an “all-electric future.” Hummer is one of many options GM
is exploring as it races to develop the next generation of battery-powered
vehicles. Several other car companies also are rushing to produce
commercially viable electric-powered models.

When asked about it, GM President Mark Reuss was unconvinced. “I love
Hummer,” Reuss said on the sidelines of a press conference on June 12. “I’m
not sure. We’re looking at everything.”

Building an electric Hummer may never come to pass. Internally, the company
looks at the idea as a `What If' exercise when planning which models GM will
build with its truck battery pack, say the people familiar with the
discussions. Without electrification, GM would have a tough time selling a
traditional Hummer in an era when emissions rules have become much stricter
than in the brand’s heyday ...

BEV3 Project

GM is currently working on two major battery-electric vehicle programs. The
first is its BEV3 project, which will develop passenger cars, crossover SUVs
and a variety of other small and mid-sized models. That’s part of the
automaker’s pledge to put 20 EVs on the road globally by 2023. The second
program would make electric pickups and other full-size vehicles, some of
which can go off-road.

In its family of brands, GM has large SUVs -- such as the Chevrolet Suburban
and Cadillac Escalade -- as well as hulking GMC vehicles including the
Sierra truck and Yukon SUV. GMC also has Denali-labeled models that denote
luxury and an AT4 brand for off-road capable trucks. Any of those
potentially could be offered with electric powertrains, Reuss said.

“It’s massive. There might be places where we go first that are not just
heavy-duty work trucks but more style and capability for off-road,” he said.
“There are lots of things that are very attractive.”

GM kept Hummer after its 2009 bankruptcy but halted sales in 2010. Back
then, the 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H2 made the brand a symbol of automaker
indifference to global warming. The vehicle was so heavy its weight placed
it beyond the reach of federal government rules for fuel-economy tests,
further enraging environmentalists. Hummer’s death knell came when oil
soared past $100 a barrel, spiking gas prices and sinking sales.

GM bought the brand in 1998, six years after AM General debuted it as a
civilian version of the armored Humvee military vehicle made famous for its
role in the Gulf War. Actor and former California Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger was an early and very public advocate for the brand and its
first model, which later became known as the H1. GM sales started with the
H2 model in 2002, a $60,000 SUV made using some parts from Chevy pickups and
SUVs. It was a smash hit among buyers looking for brawn and bling, prompting
the Detroit automaker to follow up with the mid-sized H3 SUV and H3T pickup
truck.

Demand for Hummer vehicles peaked in 2006 with U.S. sales of 71,524
vehicles, but fewer than 4,000 were sold by 2010, according to the
Automotive News Data Center.

Over the past few years, GM has been watching the growth of Jeep, the crown
jewel and moneymaker of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, and wondering if
Hummer might win a piece of that market, said the people familiar with the
brand discussions. GM sees an opportunity to compete with Jeep for off-road
vehicles that have creature comforts commanding high premiums, two of the
people said. The company’s designers have done work with Hummer concepts and
have experimented with Hummer styling cues on future GMC brand models.

Tesla is developing the means to manufacture its own battery cells,
current and recent employees told CNBC.

The main cost component of an EV is its battery pack and battery cells,
according to research by IHS Markit.

Since 2014, Tesla has mostly relied on its partner Panasonic to produce
battery cells for its vehicles and clean energy products.

Tesla is developing the means to manufacture its own battery cells,
according to five current and recent employees, something that the electric
vehicle maker has relied on Panasonic to do since the companies signed an
extensive partnership deal in 2014.

The move could help Tesla offer cheaper, higher-performance electric
vehicles than it does today, without having to pay or share data and
resources with outside vendors or partners. The battery pack and battery
cells are the main cost component in an electric vehicle, according to
research by IHS Markit.

The company has been “battery-constrained” in the past, CEO Elon Musk
acknowledged at the company’s annual shareholders meeting earlier in June.
That means a lack of batteries limited Tesla’s production and sales of
electric vehicles and energy storage systems (Powerwalls and Powerpacks).

Making its own battery cells would also fit with Musk’s general ambition to
make Tesla as “vertically integrated” as possible, which means developing,
manufacturing and selling everything it can — even its own enterprise
software.

But manufacturing cells at high volume would be another challenge for a
company that recently implemented cost-cutting measures and is still
struggling to perfect its high-volume vehicle production.

Tesla and Panasonic did not respond to requests for comment.
Skunkworks lab on Kato road

Tesla employees conduct some of their battery cell manufacturing research at
a “skunkworks lab” at the company’s Kato Road facility, a few minutes from
its car plant in Fremont, California.

That plant is where Tesla makes its Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles
today, while its batteries are made at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada, a
factory jointly owned and operated with Panasonic.

Employees in Tesla’s battery R&D teams are now focused on designing and
prototyping advanced lithium ion battery cells, as well as new equipment and
processes that could allow Tesla to produce cells in high volumes, employees
and former employees said.

Tesla has posted job listings in the last month for various engineers
involved in battery cell design, equipment for producing battery cells and
manufacturing processes to make batteries.

Even if Tesla’s effort to start making battery cells is successful, the
company is not likely to cut ties with Panasonic and other battery suppliers
any time soon.

Tesla employees familiar with cell supplier negotiations said the company is
most likely to work with Panasonic and LG to provide the cells that go into
the initial Model 3 vehicles produced in its Shanghai factory. That factory
could start production by the end of 2019, with mass production beginning in
2020.

factory in Shanghai. Eunice Yoon | CNBC

The ambition to bring at least some battery cell manufacturing in house has
been broadly discussed within Tesla and among its followers.

At the company’s annual shareholder meeting in June, Musk invited Chief
Technical Officer JB Straubel and Vice President of Technology Drew Baglino
on stage to tell shareholders about battery-related initiatives at Tesla.

Musk encouraged outside investors to focus on two strategic matters at
Tesla: How quickly the company can offer completely self-driving vehicles,
and its plan to “scale battery production and get the cost per kilowatt hour
lower.” He said Tesla wasn’t ready to let the “cat out of the bag” yet and
would reveal further details — including about the company’s acquisition of
Maxwell Technologies, completed in May this year — at an investor battery
and powertrain day before the end of 2019.

Straubel said: “It’s more obvious now than I think it ever was, we need a
large-scale solution to cell production.”

Baglino added, “We’re not sitting idly by. We’re taking all the moves
required to be masters of our own destiny here, technologically and
otherwise. I think through all the experience

[EVDL] EVLN: Transporting/moving your EV> look for a decent company

2019-06-29 Thread brucedp5 via EV

https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/electric-vehicles/how-to-move-an-electric-car/
How to move an electric car?
June 24, 2019

Moving an electric car is not as difficult as you might fear. Sure, there
are certain preparations you have to take care of, but the whole process is
pretty much straightforward. That is unless you want to ensure that your
electric car is moved in an eco-friendly way and that the relocation doesn't
cost you a fortune. If that is the case, you might need to do some extra
work in order to find the right shipping company to help you out. Luckily,
we are here to tell you all you need to know about how to move an electric
car. So, let's jump in.

Prepare your car for transport

You cannot safely transport your car without preparing it first. In fact,
most car shipping companies will outright refuse to move an electric car if
it is not prepared for relocation. This is especially true if you plan on
moving your car to a different state or to a different country. In that
case, you might need to fill out extra paperwork. So, before you do anything
else, make sure that you have the necessary paperwork for car transport.
That will include both the legal paperwork and the necessary insurance. Once
you have that covered, you can move on to the next step.

Clean it

Having a clean car is mandatory for safe transportation. No matter what
shipping type you opt for, you will need to clean your car before you
attempt it. So, either take your car to your local cleaner or go at it
yourself. Having a clean car is not only about the looks. Sure, every car
looks prettier when it is clean, but the more important reason is safety.
There is a higher risk of your car failing if it is dirty and not properly
maintained. This is why you need to clean your car before shipping it and
keep it clean afterward.

Have a mechanic check it out

Once you have it cleaned, you need to check if it is in proper condition for
the move. The best way to do this is to find a local mechanic who is
proficient in electric cars. Since more and more companies are working
together in producing electric cars, there are going to be more and more
mechanics who know how to fix and maintain them. But, right now, depending
on where you live, you might have a hard time finding a decent electric car
mechanic. If that is the case, you need to go online and look for a
respectable one. Electric cars are complicated, and you should only let the
best mechanics maintain yours if you plan on moving it safely.

Hire a company to move an electric car

Once you have prepared your car and you have the necessary paperwork, the
time has come to find someone to move your car. Now, finding a decent
shipping company is similar to finding a decent moving company. For moving,
you can go to sites like mastermovingguide.com, but for moving cars you best
visit sites like Google or Facebook. You need to start early and you need to
keep looking until you find the most reliable and competent one. Electric
cars are usually expensive, and if you want yours to remain in pristine
condition, you need to have experienced, well-equipped car movers handling
it.

How to look for a decent company

Once you find a couple of potential car movers, you need to filter them out
and find the most reliable ones. Moving a regular car and moving an electric
car is pretty similar if they simply plan to ship them. So, if a company
doesn't specify that they move electric cars, don't worry. Simply look for
companies that have the most experience that have the highest ratings. Once
you find ones that seem reliable and competent, contact them. Then you will
able to find out what their moving plan is and how much they plan on
charging you for it.

Different ways of shipping

What may surprise you is that there are multiple ways to ship an electric
car. If you are shipping it from overseas, you will need to use either a
plane or a boat to get your electric car into the country. Once you do that,
there are again multiple ways to ship. You can either opt for auto carrier
trucks or you can choose a train. Trains are usually used by larger
companies for larger shipments. They are safe, but they can be quite
expensive. This is why you will probably opt for auto carrier trucks.

But, this is not where your options end. You can choose between open
carriers and enclosed carriers. Open carriers are usually cheaper but they
provide less protection. In enclosed carriers, your car will be safe from
the elements, which can be quite useful in extreme climates. But, the major
downfall is that your car relocation probably won't be green. Even though a
lot of cities are trying as hard as they can to be green, companies tend to
care less about the environment. Furthermore, it is usually very difficult
and expensive for car shipping companies to be green. This is why you might
hire a driver to move it for you.

Hiring a driver

Another way you can move an electric car is to have someone drive it f

Software mogul Bill Gates recently took a spin down to Dairy Queen to meet
his buddy Warren Buffett – who owns the restaurant brand – and try his hand
at making Blizzards. The Youtube video highlighting the visit is cute, but
what made it special in our eyes was the open-top e-Porsche Gates showed up

[EVDL] EVLN: (PROice) AAA halts roadside charging service> keeps towing

AAA Emergency Assistance Program For Battery-Electric Vehicles
]

Bolt, Leaf, and Tesla Owners Take Note: AAA Temporarily Suspends Emergency
Battery Electric Vehicle Charging Program
AAA's emergency electric vehicle charging program has been suspended for
now. Towing remains the only viable option.

Like many good ideas related to electric vehicle charging infrastructure,
AAA's emergency roadside assistance for drivers with depleted electric
vehicle batteries has proven more difficult in execution than anticipated.
Back in 2011, AAA began to offer very limited battery electric vehicle
emergency charging assistance. AAA's press release at the time penned by
Marshall L. Doney, AAA Automotive Vice President stated:

“AAA has been a leader in addressing the needs of motorists for more than a
century, and the introduction of mobile electric vehicle charging continues
that tradition. As the electric vehicle market continues to emerge, AAA is
ready to help alleviate some ‘range anxiety’ with the ability to provide a
charge to electric vehicles on the roadside that gets drivers back on the go
quickly.”

AAA EV assistance

Electric Vehicle Evolution

In 2011, the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf were the only EVs on the road.
Barely. With 17,000 units of modern EVs sold into a population of over a
quarter billion vehicles on the road, finding one in the wild was like
spotting a unicorn. At the time, many EV advocates anticipated that the
Chevy Volt extended-range electric vehicle, with its onboard gasoline engine
that could propel the car like any hybrid, would soon be supplanted by full
battery-electric cars. Cars like the Volt were seen as "transition" or
"gateway" designs that would quickly be overtaken by battery-only vehicles.

Of course, we now know that the Chevy Volt proved to be the top-selling
affordable electric vehicle in American automotive history. When Chevy opted
to kill it off early this year it was still in the top three overall for EV
sales in America and had been outselling GM's battery-only Bolt. The reality
is, there are not a lot of affordable battery electric vehicles for AAA to
help. Until the success of the premium-performance Tesla Model 3 which began
to sell in solid numbers about a year ago, there weren't many EVs of any
type to help.

The publication Elektrek updated EV owners on the AAA program in 2016. At
that time, AAA had EV service vehicles in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco,
Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, and Orlando. However, the folks from AAA noted
its special service was going mostly unused.

We reached out to AAA to get an update on where the program stands today.
Our colleague John Paul, the Car Doctor, an early adopter of electric
vehicles had the update. John Paul told Torque News, "The E/V charging
program was an early pilot using large truck mounted generators. After some
successful learnings, the trucks and generators have been retired. That does
not mean we will leave our members with EVs stranded. We will certainly tow
them home or to a charging station. In addition, AAA's mobile app and
electronic Trip-Tiks also have E/V charging station locations. Going
forward, we are undergoing a new phase that will test the potential of using
some new much more compact technology that promises more efficient roadside
charging."

Eliminating range anxiety has been a long fought battle. Tesla demonstrated
a battery swap program it thought might be part of the future of electric
vehicles but has thus far let it sit idle. AAA had a good idea for helping
stranded EV owners, but the EV market and owner habits have precluded it
from being viable - for now. With plug-in hybrid EVs continuing to make up a
majority of the affordable EV market, a quick stop at a gas station remains
the quickest way for EV owners to be back on the road when their vehicle
needs more energy. Just like it was in 2011.

https://youtu.be/-SoZKXlsJG8
Tesla Arcade hands-on: the Model 3 is your video game console
]

You’ve never played Beach Buggy Racing 2 quite like this

Tesla is pulling its secret video game features out of the shadows and
bringing them front and center starting today as Tesla Arcade, a new game
hub found across its line of electric vehicles. And earlier this afternoon,
the company brought a Model 3 to downtown San Francisco to let The Verge try
out Arcade and its newest title, developer Vector Unit’s Beach Buggy Racing
2. It’s an Android racing game you can play on a phone or tablet, but what
makes it special on a Tesla car is its controller: the literal steering
wheel of the Model 3.

Tesla has always prided itself on treating its electric vehicles like
computers, and it often touts the ability to send game-changing,
over-the-air updates to its cars that add everything from improved
self-driving capabilities to silly Easter eggs like “James Bond mode.” Now,
Tesla is going one step further and turning its cars into full-blown video
game consoles.

With this new update, you’ll get Beach Buggy Racing 2 alongside some
existing Atari classics. Tesla is also promising support for Studio MDHR’s
cartoony platformer Cuphead in the coming months, which will work with
gamepad support that Tesla already rolled out. The update also makes these
gaming features easier to find. Previously, they were hidden inside a
special menu accessible only by pressing the Tesla logo from the main hub of
the infotainment center and finding a secret drawer of sorts for Easter
eggs. Now, Tesla Arcade is found by pressing an arrow icon found at the
bottom of the home screen’s main icons, which opens a dedicated menu bar.
From there, you can tap the “Arcade” button and you’ll gain access to the
full list of titles right away.

[image] Photo by Brennan King / The Verge
Vector Unit worked alongside Tesla engineers to make sure its game could tap
into the car’s physical steering and braking system. (Sorry, no gas: Tesla
advises you not to press the accelerator while playing the game. Just in
case you forget, the software disables the pedal until you exit Arcade and
sends you a detailed “Warning” note.) In single-player, you can use the
steering wheel or touch controls. I was able to even use both at the same
time, steering with one hand and tapping the screen to use in-game power ups
and attack items. There’s also two-player mode, in which a passenger can
play split-screen alongside you, tapping the screen while you use the
steering wheel.

Steering was surprisingly responsive, mainly because Tesla’s software
unlocks the steering wheel from its standard rigidness when in park and lets
you freely move it as you would on a toy wheel attached to a racing arcade
cabinet. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the steering. That doesn’t
change how the wheel feels, but it does make movements of the wheel move
your in-game character more dramatically.

THE TESLA STEERING CONTROLS ARE SURPRISINGLY RESPONSIVE IN BEACH BUGGY
RACING 2
I found it much more fun to use the steering wheel than the touchscreen
controls, and pressing the brake pedal (which, admittedly, I did not do too
often) felt like it had a realistic slow-down effect on my car. One other
neat touch is that your in-game vehicle is no longer a cartoony car, but the
actual model and color of your real-life Tesla, pulled from the in-car
software.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased this integration back at the E3 video game expo
last week, in conversation with Bethesda’s Todd Howard, who’s helping the
game studio work with Tesla to port Fallout Shelter to its line of electric
cars. But Musk didn’t give a release date for Arcade at the time. Now, the
company says the update will be making its way to Tesla cars this week and
next, but anyone can try it at a Tesla showroom through June 30th.

Personally, I don’t see myself ever really wanting to play mobile games on
the screen in my car. But as someone who commutes via bike and hasn’t owned
a vehicle since they graduated college, I can say that having a car even
remotely capable of playing video games like this is certainly an appealing
dream. I can certainly empathize with those who do own Teslas and want to
use Tesla Arcade, or are just plain excited about a future where the modern
car has as robust an app ecosystem as our smartphones do now.

A Tesla spokesperson tells The Verge that the idea is to do something fun
and unique that can perhaps keep you busy while you’re waiting to pick
someone up, or while you’re at

in January of this year

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has recently joined hands with BMW to
develop next generation electric drive systems. The collaboration seeks to
advance development of electrification technology to support transition
autonomous, connected, electric, shared (ACES) future, Jaguar Land Rover
said in a statement.

The two partners will invest jointly in research and development,
engineering and procurement with an aim to provide the necessary economies
of scale to support increased consumer adoption of electric vehicles, it
added.

The strategic collaboration will build on the considerable knowledge and
expertise in electrification at both the companies."We've proven we can
build world beating electric cars but now we need to scale the technology to
support the next generation of Jaguar and Land Rover products. It was clear
from discussions with BMW Group that both companies' requirements for next
generation EDUs (electric drive units) to support this transition have
significant overlap making for a mutually beneficial collaboration," JLR
Engineering Director Nick Rogers said.

JLR's has already demonstrated its capability field through its premium
battery electric SUV Jaguar I-PACE, as well as plug-in hybrid models. BMW
Group also has vast experience of developing and producing several
generations of electric drive units in-house since it launched the BMW i3 in
2013.

JLR said the agreement will enable both the companies to take advantage of
efficiencies arising from shared research and development and production
planning as well as economies of scale from joint procurement across the
supply chain.

As part of their agreement, a team of JLR and BMW Group experts will
engineer the EDUs with both partners developing the systems to deliver the
specific characteristics required for their respective range of products,
the statement said, adding the EDUs will be manufactured by each partner in
their own production facilities.

For JLR this will be at its Wolverhampton-based Engine Manufacturing Centre
(EMC), which was confirmed as the home for the company's global EDU
production in January of this year, it said.

The plant, which employs 1,600 people, will be the centre of propulsion
system manufacturing, offering full flexibility between clean lngenium
petrol and diesel engines and electric units.

The EMC will be complemented by the recently announced Battery Assembly
Centre at Hams Hall, near Birmingham, in supplying electrified powertrain
systems to JLR'S global vehicle PLANTS, it said.

TRUCKLA: The world's first Tesla pickup truck
Simone Giertz Published on Jun 18, 2019
I got tired of waiting for Tesla to release their pickup truck, so I made my
own. And I named it Truckla. WATCH HOW WE BUILT IT:
https://youtu.be/jKv_N0IDS2A

Awarded Best Fake Truck of 2019

]

Simone Giertz, the queen of shitty robots, modified her Tesla into a
not-at-all-shitty pickup truck which she has dubbed "Truckla."

The YouTuber and inventor is known for creating useless robots that
automatically smack people awake or chaotically try to apply lipstick. Her
latest build, though, was a massive undertaking.

Because she's constantly hauling lumber, steel, and other raw materials for
various inventions, Giertz needed a vehicle with ample trunk space. Her
previous car, a bright yellow electric Comuta from the '80s, couldn't do it.
But Giertz didn't want a traditional pickup truck due to of environmental
concerns.

"My goal is to never own a gas car," Giertz said in a press release about
the project. "I'm part of a new generations that will only drive electric. I
feel like I should pad this a bit, but I'm not going to. Fuck oil companies.
Seriously, fuck them."

So Giertz bought a new Tesla Model 3 and after nearly a year of planning,
she worked with mechanic Marcos Ramirez, designer Laura Kampf, and Tesla
rebuild specialist Richard Benoit to create her dream truck.

First, they started out by removing the back passenger seats to make room
for a truck bed.

Once the team finished hacking away the back half of the car — a feat in
itself — they began work on turning it into a functional truck.

"I think it's so beautiful," Giertz gushed, looking at the sawed shell of
the Tesla.

She hoped people wouldn't think she was doing it for the sensational
clickbait of destroying a car.

“I really hope that people don’t just think of this as an obnoxious
YouTuber cutting up a brand new car,” Giertz noted in the release. “This
process has destructive steps but the end goal is constructive. And I’m
doing it because I really, really want this car. This is truly my dream
car.”

Although the car is fully drivable, there's still work that needs to be
done, including adding a lift kit for the comically low-riding truck. Giertz
also wants to add a new bed liner and refresh it all with a new paint job.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company was working on a "cyberpunk" looking
truck during E3 last week, hinting at an end-of-summer release.

But experts have criticized the potential truck as unrealistic. Brett Smith,
director of propulsion technologies and energy infrastructure at the Center
for Automative Research, told CNBC that "the physics don't work there."

He added that the electric battery needed to power such a large vehicle
capable of long distances would run well over Tesla's $50,000 estimated
price tag.

But in the meantime, Giertz has a pretty badass Tesla pickup truck — the
first of its kind. They even made a fake trailer for the tiny pickup.

It's worth noting that Giertz, who was born in Sweden, only got her American
driver's license a year and a half ago.

"Giertz hopes this project will help bridge the gap between pickup trucks
and electric vehicles" the press release concludes. "She is also very proud
to report that she was able to get her first parking ticket within one day
of owning the vehicle."

[EVDL] EVLN: Tesla EV resale-value 2x better than ice> 3yr EV Depreciation %

2019-06-29 Thread brucedp5 via EV

https://electrek.co/2019/06/17/tesla-holds-value-better-than-average-car-study/
Tesla holds its value 2 times better than average gasoline car, study says
Jun. 17th 2019 Fred Lambert

[image
https://i0.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2017/06/tesla-hero-header.jpg
]

A new study shows that Tesla’s Model S is holding its value 2 times better
than the average gasoline car and 3 times better than the average electric
car despite the impact of EV incentives.

iSeeCars released a deep dive study into the depreciation of new vehicles to
find the best bargains out there ...

According to the new study, the average depreciation rate for electric
vehicles is 56.6% versus 38.2% for the average gasoline car.

However, they have at least acknowledged that it is partly due to the fact
that electric cars get incentives:

iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly said:

“Categorically, electric vehicles depreciate more than the average vehicle
because resale values take into account the $7,500 federal tax credit and
other state and local credits that were applied to these vehicles when they
were bought new.”

It’s actually more than $7,500 since more than half of the electric cars in
US are sold in California and New York, where they get up to $10,000.

Imagine that you are buying a car that comes with $10,000 in the trunk.
After taking delivery and without ever driving the car, you take the $10,000
and resell it.

That brand new vehicle is already depreciating in value by $10,000 – greatly
accelerating the depreciation process. But you didn’t lose that money, it’s
in your pocket, so as far as the buyer is concerned it isn’t really
depreciation.

When accounting for the EV incentives, electric vehicles actually have a
similar average depreciation rate as gasoline cars.

They found a silver lining in the electric vehicle segment with the Tesla
Model S holding its value better than all other EVs and the average gasoline
car:

iSeeCars Comparison of Depreciation for 3-Year-Old Electric Vehicles

...Car... 3yr % Depreciation ...

Fiat 500e 69.7% ...

BMW i3 63.3% ...

Nissan LEAF 59.6% ...

Volkswagen e-Golf 58.1% ...

Kia Soul EV 56.5% ...

Tesla Model S 17.1% ...

Model S is Tesla’s oldest vehicle currently on the market with the best data
for this study.

Ly suggests that obsolescence might also play a role in the high rate of
depreciation of electric vehicles:

“Because the technology of EVs changes at a rapid pace, obsolescence also
plays a role in their dramatic depreciation as well as consumer range
anxiety and lack of public charging infrastructure.”

This could also partly explain why Tesla’s vehicles are holding their value
better since they are seen as the leader in electric vehicle technology.

Electrek’s Take
I feel like this is often something that is misrepresented: EVs depreciate
at a higher rate than gasoline cars.

This is simply not true and it would be clear to everyone if EVs wouldn’t
get incentives and gasoline cars would instead be sold with their true cost,
after accounting for their impact on health and the environment represented
in the price.

If that were to happen, it would be a totally different picture.

Either way, I predict that we are going to soon see the depreciation rate of
gasoline cars accelerate compared to electric vehicles as more compelling
EVs hit every segment of the auto market and people start to see the writing
on the wall.

Soon enough, no one will want to buy a gasoline vehicle because the electric
future will be clear to most people and they will know that no one is going
to want to buy their used gas car in 3-5 years hereby destroying its resale
value ...

[EVDL] balancing: ?PD.lu purposely maintenance-drain Tesla-S pack every 20, 000km?

2019-06-29 Thread brucedp5 via EV
It took some digging, but I found a EVLN post I made back in Aug 2015 that
might shed some light on this topic, see

http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-Offset-Supercharging-degradation-with-pack-balancing-tp4677028.html
... Lost capacity may be restored by “balancing the pack”—that is, charging
it to 100 percent to make sure that each of the cells is fully topped off.

Tesla, of course, is mum on the subject; I’ve never seen any official word
on pack balancing, and the company officially recommends against charging to
100 percent unless maximum range is necessary.

The Model S fan site Teslarati, however, recommends charging the pack to
100 percent every three months or so.

When I asked at my local Tesla Service Center about “pack balancing”, I was
told they did it all the time.

“Discharge it as close as you can to zero, and then charge it as slow as
possible all the way up to 100 percent,” I was told. “You’ll probably get
some capacity back.”

It works!

Re: [EVDL] ?PD.lu purposely maintenance-drain Tesla-S pack every 20, 000km?

2019-06-29 Thread Paul Dove via EV
I thought it said once a month. So I looked it up and the manual says:

It is recommended that you perform regular charging from 2 bars or less on the
energy level gauge to full at least once every three months. This allows the
energy level gauge to adjust to decreased battery capacity and correctly
display the remaining energy in the main drive lithium-ion battery.

A certified i-MiEV dealer can also adjust the energy level gauge for you when
requested.

Mitsubishi iMiEV does recommend taking it down to two bars once a month and
then charging all the way up but I have seen nothing of the sort suggested in
any of my Tesla documentation.

The iMIEV bases your range indicator on a stored capacity value. It is a really
poor design. If it gets off at all the dealer has to reset it with their MUT
tool.

Re: [EVDL] GNSS spoofing attacks Tesla EVs

2019-06-29 Thread Lee Hart via EV

EVDL Administrator via EV wrote:

If only there were some other way to plot a route to my
destination, something that can't be altered wirelessly.

Hey, I have an idea... "a map" and "a highlighter."

There is a long and fascinating history of auto navigational aids.

1909: The Jones "Live Map" was perhaps the first auto navigation system.
Directions for your route were printed on a map disk. The disk was
placed in a turntable that was rotated by the car's odometer. A pointer
showed where you were, and directions to the next waypoint.

1916: George Boyden's "Travel Companion" recorded the map on a
phonograph record. The odometer caused it to play a track of the record,
to provide verbal directions for getting to the next stop. (Versions of
this system have been sold for decades, with directions on cassette
tapes and CDs.)

1930: The Iter Avto had its maps printed on a long roll of paper (like
AAA's old "trip-tic" travel maps). Again, the map was advanced by the
car's odometer.

Ships and airplanes need to navigate, too. Radio navigation systems were
established to guide them. VOR was established in 1940, LORAN-C in 1970,
and OMEGA in 1971. These signals were also received in cars, and used in
a slew of auto navigation systems. The receivers typically gave you
longitude and latitude information, which positioned a printed map in a
viewer.

1981: The Honda "Gyrocator" used special maps, a gyrocompass, and wheel
sensors to move the map mechanically to show your position. It was the
first inertial guidance system for cars.

1985: The Etak "Navigator" was the first computer-based auto navigation
system. Maps were stored on cassette tapes.

1987: The Toyota Crown Royale had an optional Nav system with color
display and CD-ROM storage for its maps.

1990: Mazda introduced the first GPS-based Navigation system.
