Re: How can I disable BCC feature on exchange server

2002-04-10 Thread Glenn Corbett

hmmm,

Since the BCC doesnt show up in sent messages, how would the Manager know
they send lots of BCC messages unless he is busy watching over their
shoulders ? Tell him to get back to work :)

I'm not sure if its possbile, since the client seems to be involved in at
least part of the BCC process (hiding the recipients etc). You may want to
check out the Office Resource Kit (ORK).

Our clients send lots of BCC messages. Our Manager never likes this. How
 do I prevent this?

Re: Boundary for Public folder replication

2002-04-10 Thread Glenn Corbett

Leo,

The Public Folder Hierarchy is replicated to all Exchange servers in the
forest. Replication of Public folder content is specified on a per-public
folder basis via the Exchange system manager. There is no issue with
replication of public folders on a routing group basis, they are replicated
on a per server / storage group basis, not a routing group.

The public folder affinity you spoke of is really related to clients
browsing content of the PF hierarchy where they do not have locally
replicated content.

Subject: Boundary for Public folder replication

I am confused and would really appreciate someone's help.

I have that that public folders are NOT replicated within a routing group
!!?? I find this hard to believe as replication within an Exchange 5.5
 site was always available.

I have searched Technet and many other resources they don't make a
 statement in either direction.

I can only find one reference to public folder replication WITHIN a
routing group (MS Exchange administrators companion). But this is under
the section entitled Public folder affinity.

The fact that I have only found 1 piece of text on the replication of
public folders within a routing group alarms me as I would have expected
to have found many more. Is the MS Exchange administrators companion
 correct?

Could someone confirm that you are able to replicate public folders within
a routing group and point me to a reference if they have one please.

 Regards
 Leo

Hi there,

when Frontpage 2000 starts loading the site from a network drive it
blocks everything and doesn't managge to open the site (not even for me

without any problems...
Does anyone have a clue as to what might be doing this? (the network

David,

You could always purchase something like 'KVS Enterprise Vault' restore each
backup and archive it to the Vault in turn and then use it's indexing search
system (words or phrases) to locate information in body text and

Subject: Restoring an old (no longer existing) server

Current setup:
- Exchange 2000 sp2 on mailbox servers and a single 5.5 sp4 IMC
server
- Currently using NTBackup for backups and Antigen 6.5 for
virus/content filtering

I was just informed that, due to a lawsuit, I must restore an old 5.5 server
that no longer exists and restore the entire database (not brick-level) for
a period of about different 8 months. I have the databases on a month-end
tape from each of those months and those tapes were made use ArcServe. I
also have long since reused that server. Once the database is restored on
the new server, I must then go through every email from every user and
search for text in either the subject AND the body. After this is done for
one month I'm to blow everything away and start all over again with the next
month's tape.

My question is how in the hell am I going to accomplish this? Building the
server and recreating the Exchange environment is easy enough but I'm
confused on the restore and the searching parts. If I have to buy something
like Trend for the searching I guess it could be done and charged to the
client but I prefer not to. As for the backups, since I cannot bring this
server onto our network and the backup server that has ArcServe is obviously
on the network, how do I do this? My best guess is to use a cross-connect
cable and bring the backup server offline during the restore time. Any
other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is a generic smtp code. Post the entire error and include the address
or atleast the domain you are trying to send mail to. Is this Exchange sp2?

Your previous issue sounds like an issue on their end. IIRC their server
would intermittently accept connections but would not process requests. Set
spine.brain.net.pk as the preferred server for that domain for a couple of
days to see if the problem goes away.

RE: How can I disable BCC feature on exchange server

2002-04-10 Thread Andy David

Im going to take the Devil's advocate position. I dont think
this is such a dumb request myself. I can think of alot of
reasons companies would want to disable the bcc:
functionality. As far as I tell, bcc: support is not an
absolute requirement of the RFCs and it would certainly

Andrea,

You will need to have a replica of the free/busy folder on the 'other'
system as you don't have the trusts between them(I assume you just see
stripped info on users on the other server when locking at there free and
busy.

 hello all,

we have 3 exchange server sites 5.5 (with same exchange organization) on 2
different NT domain (NOT trusted) and have configured them for replicating
global address book for every sites.
It works fine, now we can see all address for every site, but now we would
like to use calendar on outlook 98 for inviting persons having their
mailbox on another site (and another NT domain): is it possible?
we are able to add them on the list of partecipants, but we are not able
 to view their free/schedule appointments...

Many thanks in advance for every help.

I've got a 5.5 organization, and the Exchange server in one
of my sites is getting 9318 bind errors to all other servers
in other sites. I've verified name resolution both ways, and
everything seems to be in order. I'm able to net use shares
both ways with no problem. I'm also able to ping by name
both ways with no problem. I've added the other servers to
it's hosts and lmhosts files for good measure with no luck.

 Any suggestions???

RE: Policy Q's.

2002-04-10 Thread Couch, Nate

We do restores in the following instances

1) It was our fault (rare but it does happen).
2) Auditors/company lawyers need it for legal reasons.
3) VIP doesn't know how to use email and needs their mail restored
(most common).
4) The server goes belly up.
5) Anything else is handled on a case by case basis.

As multiple databases in the same Storage Group all share the same logs
what do you do if you have to restore an older-than-last full backup and
be able to roll the logs forward or perform an eseutil /p without
affecting the other stores in the Storage Group?

RE: Ghosting WIN 2K PC's

2002-04-10 Thread Tom Meunier

Just to put in the other alternative:
We use RIS because we've got lots of different hardware. Whenever a new user comes
in, we tell their local admin to press F12 on bootup and it images the system for
them. Twenty minutes later, ready for logon with apps everything. We have a lot of
remote sites with very little technical expertise, and this works well for us.

Don't see what this has to do with Exchange, though.

Re: Policy Q's.

2002-04-10 Thread Glenn Corbett

Paul,

Normally its how loud they whinge, how important the data is, and how high
up the management food chain they can go (and not in that order)

The first response should probably be No, you cant have it back, then work
from there. Don't ask why they want it back, they will always have some lame
excuse. Users will try to get IT to do it, even if they don't REALLY need
the data back.

In some organisations I've dealt with, there is a financial penalty for
getting data back (when the problem was user induced), since the IT guys
typically would do it after hours (too busy during the day to build EX
servers). That normally puts things into perspective, and if the data IS
critical, they will pony up the money to have it done. Their management will
need to supply the money, and would be in a better position to a) deal with
the whinging user (always a good thing), b) decide how important the data
is, c) usually make sure it doesn't happen again.

Obviously with server failures or entire DB corruption, that sort of thing
gets fixed, no questions asked.

Glenn

Re: Prevent the forwarding of an email message.

2002-04-10 Thread Glenn Corbett

Kevin, what do you mean by:

prevent someone from forwarding the email message or any content of the
message

like what ? the words ??

sounds like that would be almost impossible to do (without disabling the
MTA's).

Cutting and pasting content from an existing message cannot be distinguished
by Exchange from a message that was typed from scratch (even if the words
are 100% identical)

Some clarification might help, what exactly are you trying to stop ?

There are products around (Like Authentica) which do try and impose some
control on HOW recipients of an email interact with it, for example refusing
printing of emails, expiring the email after a specific time. Quite cool
technology actually, but as one of the other posters said, it still wouldn't
stop a screen capture (although the resulting format is not entirely useful)

Glenn.

Re: being dropped by this list?

I've gotten a couple dozen of them over the last 2 1/2 weeks. Posted about
it to this group on 3/26. Only had one other person reply that they had
gotten them. Forwarded the message to MSN Hotmail support - and got
absolutely nowhere (anyone surprised?). I suspect that the fact that my
Hotmail account has been inaccessible for hours at a time on several days
over this stretch points the finger at them, but I don't have days of idle
time to spend with the bozos who respond to requests for help. They answer
every question with 10 questions of their own - no answers yet.

Just keep sending those unhold messages if you want to stay current.

RE: DNS

2002-04-10 Thread Ben Winzenz

It doesn't appear that you have reverse DNS records for your Exchange
server. If the receiving domain is doing reverse lookups, they may not
accept mail from your domain.

About DNS, actually I got this error from one of the domain I was send

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a

Actually, if you search 'disclaimer exchange 2000' on

RE: 9318 and 9322 bind and bindback errors

2002-04-10 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Make sure that you have name resolution consistency across the board. If
that server only uses WINS and the rest of the organization uses DNS and
WINS, you may see this problem. One server will send a request and identify
itself as server.domain.com. The receiving server tries to verify the IP
address and if it resolves it to only server and not the FQDN you will
start receiving these errors. This is due to the bindback string changes in
SP3 and on. See Q279537 for details.

I've got a 5.5 organization, and the Exchange server in one of my sites is
getting 9318 bind errors to all other servers in other sites. I've verified
name resolution both ways, and everything seems to be in order. I'm able to
net use shares both ways with no problem. I'm also able to ping by name
both ways with no problem. I've added the other servers to it's hosts and
lmhosts files for good measure with no luck.

Any suggestions???

RE: How can I disable BCC feature on exchange server

2002-04-10 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Well,

You can create a custom form and remove the BCC field. Then you'll have to
make this the default message from for your organization and I remember
seeing information on how to do that at www.slipstick.com (surprise,
surprise).

But, of course that only applies if EVERY client uses OUTLOOK ALL the time.
Anyone can simply configure Outlook Express and get around that.

Time to get a new job, since you won't ever stop receiving idiotic requests
like this one.

RE: Interesting recovery

2002-04-10 Thread Soysal, Serdar

I believe any recovery operation like the ones you mentioned are performed
on a database basis. So, if the database is part of a storage group that
contains other databases, the logs are examined and only the portions of the
logs that contain transactions for the database being restored/repaired are
processed.

As multiple databases in the same Storage Group all share the same logs what
do you do if you have to restore an older-than-last full backup and be able
to roll the logs forward or perform an eseutil /p without affecting the
other stores in the Storage Group?

RE: How can I disable BCC feature on exchange server

2002-04-10 Thread Setmajer, Jerzy

Set max outgoing message size on that client to zero. Better yet - do it on
a store level
No more bcc's :=)

If people complain they cannot send the mail - tell them the reason for it
is that Our clients send lots of BCC messages. Our Manager never likes
this.

One thing for sure - you will NOT get any complains from your clients via
e-mail (make sure you change your phone # too)
Oh, Serenity :=)

Simple answer just for the fun of it. SID. You need to walk the SID's.

Glenn,

Create one vault store (even on a live one Vault server) as only interested
in searching not retrieving security etc; when the emails are archived don't
bother to set a shortcut, so it is only held in the index and archive. Do
this for each restore and you've got a SIS archive of the servers accessed
via IE and searchable, Voila!!

Agreed Paul,

KVS Enterprise Vault would be a good way to go, however not sure how the
vault-enabling of mailboxes would work in that situation (since you are
constantly reloading Exchange). You will need additional hardware to support
the Vault Store and the Vaults, however for the sort of operation David is
talking about, it would probably be a good solution.

You could always purchase something like 'KVS Enterprise Vault' restore

 Current setup:
 - Exchange 2000 sp2 on mailbox servers and a single 5.5 sp4 IMC
 server
 - Currently using NTBackup for backups and Antigen 6.5 for
 virus/content filtering

I was just informed that, due to a lawsuit, I must restore an old 5.5
server
that no longer exists and restore the entire database (not brick-level)
for
a period of about different 8 months. I have the databases on a month-end
tape from each of those months and those tapes were made use ArcServe. I
also have long since reused that server. Once the database is restored on
the new server, I must then go through every email from every user and
search for text in either the subject AND the body. After this is done
for
one month I'm to blow everything away and start all over again with the
next
 month's tape.

My question is how in the hell am I going to accomplish this? Building
the
server and recreating the Exchange environment is easy enough but I'm
confused on the restore and the searching parts. If I have to buy
something
like Trend for the searching I guess it could be done and charged to the
client but I prefer not to. As for the backups, since I cannot bring this
server onto our network and the backup server that has ArcServe is
obviously
on the network, how do I do this? My best guess is to use a cross-connect
cable and bring the backup server offline during the restore time. Any
other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Outlook express clients and MSX2000/SMTP

2002-04-10 Thread Bravo, Liliana

MSX2000+SP2

After migrating to MSX2000 our Outlookexpress clients (no fix ips because
are dial-up laptops) get the following mail delivery failure when trying
to send a message:

Sent RCPT TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Received 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Could not deliver mail to this user.

Is like the SMTP server does not want to deliver messages to valid users
(these users belong to that server)
Note: The from/return address of the sender is valid.

The only workaround I found is to go to the SMTP connector properties and
then to ACCESS then RELAY and switch from only the list below to All
except the list below (list in all cases is blank because does not allow to
specify mailboxes but ips and our clients do not have fix ips) but is this
not opening our server to be use for relay to the whole world? what can we
do to allow only the mailboxes ina that server to use the SMTP server?

-thanks,

RE: Outlook express clients and MSX2000/SMTP

2002-04-10 Thread Julian Stone

You need to set allow relay to authenticated users at the server end,
then have each client send
username\password when sending (a setting within Oexpress)

And how did they disable it prior to electronic eMail?
After all the term
BCC refers to Blind CARBON Copy, referring to the old
practice of putting
carbon paper under the original letter on their typewriter

And how did they disable it prior to electronic eMail?
After all the term
BCC refers to Blind CARBON Copy, referring to the old
practice of putting
carbon paper under the original letter on their typewriter
(or under the
hand written note).

think
this is such a dumb request myself. I can think of alot of reasons
companies would want to disable the bcc: functionality. As far as I
tell, bcc: support is not an absolute requirement of the RFCs and it
would certainly upset alot of your sneaky peers if they couldn't use
it!

Moving from 5.5 - 2k

2002-04-10 Thread Michael Hollingsworth

I hope that I'm missing something small and this is a simple one. I am
trying to move from 5.5 to 2k. I have made some progress.

1. 2k server installed, up and running, it is the same site as the 5.5.
2. I can move mailboxes from the 5.5 server to the 2k server using the AD
tool supplied with exchange 2k.
3. When the mailbox is moved Outlook auto configs itself to point at the
new server.
4. I send mail to myself on the 2k server.
5. I can access the address list.

All of that looks to be good, however I can not get mail from the outside or
from the 5.5 server. I send mail to myself (2k - 2k) but I can not get
mail from the Internet or from the 5.5 server.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Test Lab for W2k E2K

2002-04-10 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

I recently built a new test lab for testing Ex.5.5 to E2K.

Things that I did:

1. added new w2kserver as a DC in my production domain... populated it ..
removed it.
2. Put DC in test lab and seized the FSMO roles
3. Installed Ex5.5 servers and restored the directory to create blank
mailbox's, dl's, custom recipents
4. Installed ADC on w2kserver server.
5. Ran Forestprep Domainprep
6. Configured connection agreement for recipents (two way).

Problem: The DL's, mailbox's came over OK into the AD. The majority of the
custom receipents
didn't come over to the AD as contacts. A few of these did appear as
mailbox's.

Question:

1. Did I miss something when I created the DC and seized the FSMO roles?
2. Did I miss something when I created the CA under the ADC?

PLease help...

Ron

RE: Outlook express clients and MSX2000/SMTP

2002-04-10 Thread Tom Meunier

I have a Liliana subfolder. She's the only one that sends me urgent
messages. I thought that was just for me.

Liliana, how about if you set allow anyone who successfully
authenticates to relay, regardless and then have them set up their
Outlook Express to have it authenticate on the SMTP server, and click
that little use the same password as my pop3 server box? That should
work.

Does it occur to you that not every damn message you send to the mailing

MSX2000+SP2

After migrating to MSX2000 our Outlookexpress clients (no fix ips
because are dial-up laptops) get the following mail delivery failure
when trying to send a message:

Sent RCPT TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Received 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Could not deliver mail to this user.

Is like the SMTP server does not want to deliver messages to valid users
(these users belong to that server)
Note: The from/return address of the sender is valid.

The only workaround I found is to go to the SMTP connector properties
and then to ACCESS then RELAY and switch from only the list below to
All except the list below (list in all cases is blank because does not
allow to specify mailboxes but ips and our clients do not have fix ips)
but is this not opening our server to be use for relay to the whole
world? what can we do to allow only the mailboxes ina that server to use
the SMTP server?

-thanks,

What do y'all use as a trigger for a mailbox restore?

New E2K Environment, not much in the way of policy implemented before my
arrival.

User mangled calendar data out with Palm synch issue.

Want's database restore to bring calendar back. We do have a spare
server for restores..

Q: How bad does it have to be for you to do a restore? Complete loss of
mailbox? Lost of one contact? What's your policy on what neccessitates a
restore, and when is it 'it sucks to be you' time?

Send the message day before the meeting.

2002-04-10 Thread NetStar

Is there a way to setup an auto reply that is to be
sent to everyone who had booked a conference room.
Send the message day before the meeting. Can this be
done on the server base.

Exampe message:
Should you no longer need this conference room please
respond by email as soon as possible so the room can
be made available for another person. Conference
rooms are available for use by employees and their
visitors. Out of courtesy to fellow employees it is
expected that users will leave at the designated time
and leave the area in a clean and orderly fashion.

Thank you!

Is there a way to setup an auto reply that is to be
sent to everyone who had booked a conference room.
Send the message day before the meeting. Can this be
done on the server base.

respond by email as soon as possible so the room can

RE: Policy Q's.

2002-04-10 Thread Setmajer, Jerzy

Ask them to collect approvals from ALL of the below
- Their VP,
- Your VP
- HR,
- Security,

Then have them submit a work order or project request so that project
can have a priority assigned (emergency;1-2 weeks; 3-8 weeks;2 - 6 months)

Usually they decide they no longer need it, but if they collect all of the
above - it's important enough..  :=)

Q: How bad does it have to be for you to do a restore? Complete loss of

 Hi,

When creating a new email message one presses on the 'To'
button and there are multiple entries for organizations based
on our Active Directory in there.

Is there a way to remove all the oprganizations and
sub-organizations so there is just 'recipients' or 'company
 name' instead of:

 Sales
 --Inside Sales
 --North American Sales
 --International Sales

This is just an example. We have about 40 organizations and
 sub-organizations.

We are fully Win2k except running Exch 5.5 SP4 at this time.

 Thanks,

Transitive Trusts and Exchange 5.5

2002-04-10 Thread Jason Kelley

We have a small exchange 5.5 organization that resides in a AD domain. The
AD domain does not have any Exchange 2000 servers installed. Users in our
remote AD domain's can't get access to their mailboxes.

Domain Setup:
The exchange 5.5 servers are in domain B. There is a two way trust between
domain B and domain A. There is also a two way trust between domain A and
domain C. Therefore a transitive trusts exists between domain B and domain
C.

Problem:
Users in domain C can't access mailboxes on the exchange servers that are in
domain B. The proper groups are in place. If I set up an explicit trust
between domain B and domain C everything works.

Question:
Does Exchange 5.5 not accept transitive trusts or do I have to upgrade the
OS to Windows 2000 in order for this to work without the explicit trust
between B and C?

Thanks in advance. I know this kind of sounded like an exam question.

Jason

I've got a 5.5 organization, and the Exchange server in one of my sites is
getting 9318 bind errors to all other servers in other sites. I've verified
name resolution both ways, and everything seems to be in order. I'm able to
net use shares both ways with no problem. I'm also able to ping by name
both ways with no problem. I've added the other servers to it's hosts and
lmhosts files for good measure with no luck.

Any suggestions???

some users receives e-mails (plain text) from outside sources and only

see the whole message. The only difference that I could tell is that
the

I can not change the character sets in the Internet Mail Service

If you're on Windows 2000, you can configure the service to auto-recover.
However, you really should be looking into why your service is failing as
opposed to ways of getting around it. If you car's oil light is on, you
need to change your oil. Covering the light with band-aid doesn't make the
problem go away, it only hides the symptoms.

Top-level permissions in Exchange 2000

2002-04-10 Thread Arnold, Paul

Hello all.

I am an Exch. 5.5 admin and when I set it up I created a DL called
Postmaster for the Exchange admins.
I gave this group permissions at the top level so they could open up any
mailbox for troubleshooting purposes.
This DL also gets all of the NDRs for review.

We have now upgraded to a Win2000 clustered Exchange server and I am told
that this structure is not supported in Exchange 2000 - that each user must
GRANT me permission to open their mailbox. (Never mind why I'm not Exch 2000
literate - my duties are moving in a different direction.)
So when a user asks me to open their mailbox to look at a suspicious
message, for example, I can't until they grant me access.
Does anyone know of a way (include the steps) to get the same permission
structure on the Exchange 2000 environment?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Lost/Partial Messages

2002-04-10 Thread Matt Hoffman

Anyone ever run into a situation where certain users are sending/receiving
only partial email messages (Exch. 5.5/SP4, on Win2000 SP2 member server)?
One user in particular sends messages out that then do not contain all the
necessary text within them. The same message can go to two different
recipients, with one receiving all and another only receiving half, or none
at all. The headers still come through, but not the full messages. I
haven't found anything in the FAQ (maybe I haven't looked hard enough) or in
the KB. I also have not found any errors that appear to be related to this
in the event log. Could be packet loss, but I haven't encountered any users
complaining of partial messages from the Internet.

Any help?

Thanks!

Additionally, one more thing: I have not received personally any of these

Ex5.5 ADC to W2kAD

2002-04-10 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

IS there a way to reset the object-version attribute in exchange 5.5 and
the AD after a failed
replication. Situation: I've had to reinstall my ad server from a backup
prior to installing the ADC for
exec 5.5. I had replicated the exchange directory to AD before replacing
the server. I understand
that attribute numbers are assigned on both sides after a replication takes
place. I would like to reset the attribute
numbers on both sides and start with a fresh ADC.

Any ideas?

Subject: Transitive Trusts and Exchange 5.5

We have a small exchange 5.5 organization that resides in a AD domain.
The
AD domain does not have any Exchange 2000 servers installed. Users in our
remote AD domain's can't get access to their mailboxes.

 Domain Setup:
The exchange 5.5 servers are in domain B. There is a two way trust
between
domain B and domain A. There is also a two way trust between domain A and
domain C. Therefore a transitive trusts exists between domain B and
domain
 C.

 Problem:
Users in domain C can't access mailboxes on the exchange servers that are
in

 Jason

Re: Lost/Partial Messages

2002-04-10 Thread Tony Hlabse

Maybe the part of the message is a pasted spreadsheet or something and the
other user does not have the appropriate software to view.

Additionally, one more thing: I have not received personally any of these
partial messages. I've even tried to have the prime offender send me
many
test messages, none of which have ever been truncated. It's very
difficult
to see whether this is a real problem or just some bizarre user error.

 Subject: Lost/Partial Messages

Anyone ever run into a situation where certain users are sending/receiving
only partial email messages (Exch. 5.5/SP4, on Win2000 SP2 member server)?
One user in particular sends messages out that then do not contain all the
necessary text within them. The same message can go to two different
recipients, with one receiving all and another only receiving half, or
none
at all. The headers still come through, but not the full messages. I
haven't found anything in the FAQ (maybe I haven't looked hard enough) or
in
the KB. I also have not found any errors that appear to be related to
this
in the event log. Could be packet loss, but I haven't encountered any
users
complaining of partial messages from the Internet.

 Any help?

 Thanks!

 Matt

RE: Lost/Partial Messages

So far everything appears to be straight text. I've managed in most cases
to find another copy of the email (this user has been sending these out to
multiple recipients) that actually went through OK.
