to be troublesome. Just so sun in VE will still be in an adjusted
neo-March and not September. I still don't buy it. but I am a picky
consumer. :)

Perhaps I don't get it at all, but IMO VE is always about 365 
revolutions of the Earth around its axis away from the previous
VE. Precession only affects on how the starry background of the Sun 
looks like at VE, or any other time of the year?  :0

Despite it's crude construction, the Gregorian calendar is fairly accurate:I think it would be interesting to use the pre-Gregorian method of simply dividing the sunlight hours by 12 to determine the length of hours--thus in winter hours would be shorter and in summer longer. If we continued to work roughly 8 hour days, when nature rested (in winter), humans too would work less and have more time for rest.

Chris Attwood. I worked with a man of that 
name at Newcomb Government Securities in 
Fort Collins in the early '80s. (That was Larry 
Price's company, which he stocked with TMers 
for a spell.) I wonder if the Chris Attwood I 
knew then is the same guy interviewing Mike 
Love for a publication called Healthy, Wealthy 
-n Wise?

Chris was a very upbeat, positive fellow. Back 
then we had a nickname for him that we didn't 
use to his face. We called him Bubbles. Rick
Losoff cracked us up after program one day
by quietly singing just the title line from the 
song, I'm forever blowing bubbles.

 we continued to work roughly 8 hour days, when nature rested (in  
 winter), humans too would work less and have more time for rest.

So I will work in Alaska in the winter and Mexico in he summer.

Your observation are the key words. We are talking something that
changes very slowly. About 20 minutes a year on average. Its hard to
see  the trend even over 50 years because other adjustments like leap
year make it very bumpy. But even the show Sienfeld noticed Hey has
anyone noticed spring rarely starts on the 21st anymore. What gives?

VE has been shifting slowly backwards, and in our lives, its gone from
predominatnly on the 21st, to the 20th. Look at future calendars, and
the 19th becomes predominant.

by the stream trying to figure out why it was so important to me to
try to get through to him.

me, fully believing in his own innocence.
I looked at him with that end-of-the-relationship look in my eye.
Because there is no one there to hold me if I cry, and I'd just as
soon cry alone than cry with nobody.
And in this way came and went a couple more Zen boyfriends. Yet in
the end, I blame not them but myself. For as distant, arrogant,
righteous and terrified as they were, it was I who sought them out, I

I think at least part of that is the whole gregorian jullian leap year
transition thing. It muffled the phenomenon. 

And other things are going on that may counter the effect. The 20
minutes/year retreat thing is from precesson, other things may be
pushing it back forward.

Reminds me of the proselytizing many of us went through upon 
discovering our renewed selves through TM: c'mon, you've *gotta* do 
it, and save the world!...only to realize later the world we so 
desperately wanted to be saved was entirely of our own making...

Also points up the (inhales sharply) Paradox of Brahman, where unity 
and diversity are experienced simultaneously in all objects of the 
senses, and the problems we encounter if we insist on just one 
perspective or the other.

Guidelines File 12/22/05

Fairfield Life averages 75-150 posts a day; 300+ on peak days. To avoid having 
your inbox flooded, we suggest one of the following:

1) Opt to receive the emails, but create a folder in your email client and a 
rule to direct all FFL posts to that folder.

2) Choose the no emails option and read FFL in your browser.

3) Opt to receive the daily digest.

4) Create another email account solely for FFL posts. Yahoo and Google now give 
free 2Gb accounts.

5) You can also read FFL posts at 
http://www.mail-archive.com/fairfieldlife@yahoogroups.com/. Some say this is 
faster than the Yahoo groups interface, and prefer it because it allows sorting 
by thread and has a better search function.

6) In order to prevent a repeat of the incident in which apparently, a 
malicious member uploaded some x-rated photos and then notified Yahoo that our 
chat had x-rated photos, thus causing our temporary reclassification to the 
adult category, we have limited all members to read-only access for files, 
photos, links, database, and calendar. If you would like to upload something, 
please notify Gullible Fool ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or Rick ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). 
We'll then temporarily lift the limitation, and impose it again after you're 
finished. Sorry for the inconvenience.

7) Our Files and Photos section are usually full. If you want to upload 
something, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It will be uploaded to 
http://alex.natel.net/ffl/. We'll occasionally move the best material from 
there to FFL, and may archive some FFL stuff there.

I agree. I don't get this hostility on the Internet thing. Would the
people who behave this way here do so face to face? Maybe, if they had been
married 10 years and it wasn't working out, but otherwise, I'll bet they're
a lot more cordial in real life than they are on the Net, or at least I
hope so. Amma always says that anger is like a knife without a handle that's
sharp on both ends - it injures the attacker as much as the person being
attacked. I know that when I spew negativity on someone, I feel polluted
afterwards. And upon reflection, I realize that I'm just lashing out against
my own flaws, mirrored back to me by the person I'm attacking. Can a sincere
spiritual aspirant habitually indulge in negative behavior? Wouldn't their
spiritual progress be facilitated by examining why they tend to do that and
rooting out that tendency? Wouldn't they and all they influence feel better
if they did so? People are always going to do things which potentially could
invoke our anger or negativity. Seems to me that we use take those
situations as an opportunity for our own growth by exercising restraint and
judgment and sublimating the tendency to respond in kind. In a word,
forgiveness. Maybe our doing so will facilitate their growth as well, by
setting an example or causing them to reflect on their own behavior rather
than reinforcing their destructive habit.

Just some thoughts. Sorry if I'm sounding preachy.

 my own flaws, mirrored back to me by the person I'm attacking. Can 
a sincere
 spiritual aspirant habitually indulge in negative behavior? 
Wouldn't their
 spiritual progress be facilitated by examining why they tend to do 
that and
 rooting out that tendency? Wouldn't they and all they influence 
feel better
 if they did so? People are always going to do things which 
potentially could
 invoke our anger or negativity. Seems to me that we use take those
 situations as an opportunity for our own growth by exercising 
restraint and
 judgment and sublimating the tendency to respond in kind. In a 
word,
 forgiveness. Maybe our doing so will facilitate their growth as 
well, by
 setting an example or causing them to reflect on their own 
behavior rather
 than reinforcing their destructive habit.
 
 Just some thoughts. Sorry if I'm sounding preachy.

Well said, Rick. That working towards forgiveness is some pretty 
powerful ju-ju, hmmm hm. Its easy to get high on rage, though- takes 
on a life of its own. 

The way free though is just as you said, exactly as you said. Then, 
after that, the force of fire, which burns us in anger, is harnessed 
into a steady flame of passion, the momentum of the Atman. The root 
of an easier life.

A basic question: can you objectively identify hostility in another, a
 stranger -- someone you have not met in person --  by text alone?

instead of taking the, what I read as, generaly mild criticism for a
sloppily reported article and a weak analysis of it. 

And what is hostility --different folks may have different tolerances.
My making the above statement (last sentence or prior paragraph), do
you take that as hostile? I don't. Perhaps some do. Its not a direct
attack on MG, its not implying he is eternally sloppy or weak
thinking. It is a comment about a piece of work (a post) submitted to
a larger audience. A benefit of this group is, amongst other things,
is to get feedback on our ideas, and the clarity in which we present
them. By posting something, we are implicitly asking for opinions
andfeedback. Not  everything we all post is clearly thought out, well
researched or clearly written. I think it is within the bounds of the
charter of the group to provide feedback.

Not all feedback is hostile.  In life I find litle is. Most people,
including CEOs of large firms, get performance reviews. Its feedback.
Sometimes it may be well-focused, with no sugar coating, but never
have I found it hostile. Same with feedback from a professor. He may
rip your paper apart if it sucks. Its feedback. I can never remember a
professor giving hostile feedback.

A problem is, some people when when they receive feedback, even the
most reasonable and deserved feedback and take it personally, they
internalize it, they see it as a personal attack. And  often, as a
defense mechansim, they strike back: The 'reviewer' is angry, The
'reviewer' is stupid, The 'reviewer' has an agenda against me, The
'reviewer' is hiding his own inadequacies. They stike back
defensively, instead of looking at the criticism objectively, not
taking it personally, evaluating it for valid points, 
learning from what is usefulck feedback, and disgarding the rest.

A favorite defensive response when being threatened, it appears (I
can't say for sure because I can't clearly say what is happening in 
anothers' head), is to say the poster is angry or hostile. I can speak
personally that when this response has been given to me, it is rarely
true. Often its a quite different feeling I am experiencing. But then
how would the other know this? Exactly. They can't really.

I have been posting quite regularly on this list for about 4 years. I
remember being angry about three times in reading posts. Once in a
deep discussion with LBS. I didn't respond in anger, I think I just
changed tones, went on to compliment him on some point,and ended the
exchange so I would not  flair out. Other times, I just said to myself
holy fuck what an idiot -- a way of venting, and gave up on the
thread. Perhaps others can find past posts I have forgotten that
display unmistakeable anger. I can find lots of posts where posters,
particularly Peter, see wild anger emerging in my posts. Sometimes
upon rereading them he recants. Regardless, despite HIS perception, I
can recall no post I sent to/in discussion with him in which I was
angry. Thus, again, from personal experience, I find even trained
professions who deal with moods and motives with live people, fail
miserably when they  to do so via text only.

And personal attacks, kind of an ineffective, rude way to communicate,
but not very consequential, can often be made without anger. In
Barry's slams on Judy and others, I rarely sense anger (a few I have,
but only barry would really know.) I think he sees humor in his
comments. They may be rude, they may be personal attacks, they may be
inept, but they appear to be be humor driven- not anger driven. Though
many may see Barry's comments as angry and hostile. I don't.

But a humor motivation does not excuse rudeness.  Or personal
attracks. But both these things are quite subjective. Most standup
comedians' material could be characterized as rude and personal
attacking by some. Others laugh their heads off. IMO, if the humor
gets everyone,

standard-setter in journalism, despite the Blair scandal etc.,  
hardly qualifies as flaming (

just symbolic of the whole reason why he has made TM less accessible

country that can initiate the transition to a Sat Yuga level of

That's already been done. Made me wait all day, saying they could not
verify that I was a meditator even though I had initiates in the group
getting their advanced techniques. Finally MY initiator showed up, and
they taught me last of three hundred or so ;-). Lesson learned -
