Re: [FairfieldLife] Purity of the teaching (was Re: Lenz -- Sex and Business Practices / Ethics)
Yeah, I think this kind of insanity is totally outrageous but at the same time, I am concerned about the purity of the teaching that simply meaning that people in 5, 10, 50 years will have access to the TM program as I know it. That makes me a thought stopper, a dirty rotten fundie? Who's the thought stopper? TurquoiseB wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Irmeli Mattsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, sparaig [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Since purity of the teaching is and always has been MMY's most important focus, he's been willing to tolerate less-than-creative individuals because they're the ones most likely to follow the purity of the teaching requirement, regardless. The fundamentalists usually give `the purity of the teaching' as an excuse, when they give reasons for there course of action. That pattern is so typical to fundies, that I already for a long time have immediately labelled anyone who appeals to that phrase as a fundamentalist. So far nothing has emerged that would hint those persons having got to a wrong category. Bingo. That phrase is the ultimate thought-stopper, as wielded by the TM fundamentalist. It is *supposed* to stop the discussion. *Nothing* trumps purity of the teaching. *Anything* is permissible to defend* it, including acts that are illegal (such as dismissing a student from a university for wrong thought or sending some- one home from a course with no refund for violating a simple (and simple-minded) rule like, Thou shalt go straight to the kitchen after evening lecture and have thy warm milk with cardamon and then go straight to bed and thou shalt do all of this in silence. I had a good friend who has a hilarious way of describ- ing the epiphany of figuring all of this stuff out. He was on an ATR course in Switzerland, and was told in no uncertain terms to follow the above rule. The trouble was, he *hated* warm milk and cardamon. So his routine was to walk across the street to the next hotel and buy an ice-cream cone, and take it back to his room, all in silence. He was called on the carpet for this by the course leaders several times. He ignored them. Finally, he was told in no uncertain terms to show up at a certain time for a tribunal (yes, they really called it that), in which he was to be interrogated, and at the end of which he was either going to be sent home in disgrace, never to be allowed to return to another TM course again, or repent of his evil ways, change his behavior, and be allowed to stay. So he's sitting in this waiting room, waiting, and he's scared. Really scared. His entire life is on the line. He *knows*, from experience, what happens to TM teachers who have been declared off the program. He *knows* that his entire access to advanced techniques or any future teachings from Maharishi is on the line. So he's *justifiably* scared. And then it hits him, in a blinding flash of realization, that he's sitting there quivering in his seat, about to be judged by his betters for the dastardly crime of Eating Ice Cream. He starts to laugh. They call him into the room. He can't stop laughing. He answers none of their questions, because he just can't stop laughing. He finally gets up and leaves the room, and the Inquisitors are so dumbfounded by some- one not being afraid of them that they don't do *anything* about it. He hears not another word about it. He goes back home at the end of his ATR course, and naturally the next time he applies for another course he is barred from attending it. But by this time he really doesn't care, because he's still laughing. Obviously, this is not a purity of the teaching issue per se, but it IS an example of the fascist mindset that can develop in those who espouse it as an excuse for just being fascists. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, TurquoiseB [EMAIL PROTECTED] [...] Obviously, this is not a purity of the teaching issue per se, but it IS an example of the fascist mindset that can develop in those who espouse it as an excuse for just being fascists. There's always that danger, of course. But that goes back to the issue of purity of teaching vs creativity (or tolerance). I'd like to point out that by 1985, on the sidhis course, the thought police were far more circumspect than they were before. They had the course participants elect a course leader from their own ranks who acted as the go-between between the Sidhis Administrators and the students. If there was a minor problem of off the programness, it was this course leader's job to discuss it with the students, not the Administrator's. Ours would approach us with you're not going to believe this but I've been asked to talk to you guys about cooling it with flirting with them women [or whatever]... The dynamics were definitely different than what you describe. To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' But by this time he really doesn't care, because he's still laughing. Not the same thing but I applied at a new restaurant yesterday for the chef position. I decided to use the Maharishi rule of thumb that if they're not buying at cheap then let them not buy at expensive. Sure enough these guys decide that they are going to pay their chef, get this, $35,000 a year salary for an expected 60 hour work week. So that was way under what I wanted considering my skills. So I was talking wiith them telling them how at this venue the food is the star and will make them or break them, they get what they pay for, and all that. And then I said, for a business that will bring in a potential 3-5 million dollars you're not very much willing to part with much of it for top quality cooking. I said, the owners and managers are important because you all have made the bed, but the chef is the one that will be bringing people off the streets and turning the tricks for you. And then I thought, jeez what a dumbass I am. Where did that come from. The guy looked at me, and said, well, thanks for your unique viewpoint. End of interview. It's always good to check out the market before you speak: http://www.restaurant.org/rusa/magArticle.cfm?ArticleID=358 [...] Salary and bonus levels tend to be highest for chef and executive- chef positions. Executive chefs took home a median base salary of $32,500 in an organization with annual sales of less than $1 million and $55,000 in a business with annual sales of $10 million or more. But by this time he really doesn't care, because he's still laughing. One thing is certain, in my exper- ience, *whatever* their incarnational pedigree, such petty tyrants are incapable of handling being laughed at or being embarrassed in public. As you can probably tell from my posts here, I was not the most on the program and tactful guy when I was in the TM movement. I didn't actually make that many waves, but the wave I'm most proud of also occurred at an ATR course in Switzerland. For a change, I'd gotten assigned a decent room. It was on the fourth floor, sunny, had its own bathroom. What is not to like? So it's about two weeks into the course and we get a new German course leader. He shows up, is assigned *his* room and, one can presume, doesn't like it much. The way I find *out* that he doesn't like his room much is that I go back to my *own* room after lunch and see my suitcases outside the door, with a note on them. In it, he informs me that he has moved into my room. I have been reassigned to the room that wasn't worthy of him, and he has taken the liberty of packing all of my things for me. He had the nerve to sign the note with Jai Guru Dev. What he has forgotten is that I still have my key. I use it, open the door, and walk in. He's not there, but all of his stuff is. I gather it all up and throw it out the fourth-floor window. I don't bother to pack it, I just gather up heaps of clothes and books and toilet articles and just toss them out the window onto the lawn below. And then I move back into my room. Know what happened? Nothing. Nada. Rien. Nichevo. Bupkus. I never heard a WORD about it, either from the course leader himself or anyone else. Not a word. Petty tyrants are able to be tyrants only because people allow them to do so. Stand up to them, especially in a way that makes them look ridiculous or causes others to laugh at them, and they turn back into what they always were, timid little mice given power before they were mature enough to handle it. Unc Nice job: Confronting suppression. They are cowards and wilt when one stands his ground. Jeff Its a nice story. However, I have found in my experience, such direct confrontations do not usually have such a happy ending. Responses-in-kind usually create escalating responses-in-kind, pitta-levles and ego issues flair and a small issue grows to a larger issue, ultimately on that is harder to resolve. My experience is that the cycle neeeds to be halted. Fire needs three things: heat, O2 and fuel -- take one away and the fire collapses. I find that adding fuel to the fire usually doesn't put it out. Though sometimes it does create such a huge shock and awe -- it actually blows the flames out (as it appeared to do in your case). More often however, it simply escalates pettiness on both sides. I have found that simple stepping out side the cycle, and not reacting to the aggressor / petty tyrant, stops the cycle, takes away the fuel or O2, without the danger inherent in shock and awe tactics -- addng fuel to the fire. And stepping away from perceived abuses and ego threats grow easier as ego beomes more transparent, and attention becomes more soaked in Awareness . The story was Unc's. By confront I mean willing to face without flinching. Unc didn't directly confront (in sense of confrontation) the guy in his story. His friend (in his previous story) did not flinch in the face of his inquisitors. He didn't battle either, but I feel confronted them in the sense I used above. Unc put the ball in the other guy's court (by throwing his clothes out the window) to create a real confrontation The guy didn't pursue it, but wilted instead. I believe we are actually in agreement here. :-) That being said, sometimes a real confrontation is necessary when one doesn't do something to the point where things are so dangerous that direct confrontation is necessary (eg Chamberlain Hitler). This can be averted IMO by standing one's ground at the outset. The bully will usually just back down. If it had been Dick Cheney I'd still be in Guantanamo with electrodes attached to some of my favorite places. :-) Unc That's where the power of a group comes in to play. My buddy started a Citizen's Commission on Human Rights(CCHR) group here in Austin (their avowed purpose is to flush out and expose abuses in the psychiatric community). When somebody was committed involuntarily (yeah, it happens) they would challenge the hospital (when requested by family members) to provide proof of need to be there or let them out. There are plenty of horror stories about those psych facilities (as Nicholson found out in Cuckoo's Nest). Anyway, it got to the point that a year or so ago a CCHR rep called a facility, identified himself and the person on the phone paused and said I'm already preparing the release papers. One person can handle an individual situation as Unc did. When you're going up against a big, powerful entity (gov't, drug companies, etc) you need group effort. And it works. Our chapter just snuffed out a call for mandatory mental health screenings that came from the top (GW) and was pushed by Governor Perry. All the top lobbyists said it was impossible. Yet, we stopped it. One guy can't but organization and the truth can. That inspires me and makes me feel there is still hope. The Senators and Reps were bombarded with calls and they listened. Re: [FairfieldLife] Purity of the teaching (was Re: Lenz -- Sex and Business Practices / Ethics)
I've learned a lot from you Lupidus, but I'm just not as good at it as you are. I'm just not anti-anti enough. - Original Message - From: lupidus108 To: FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 16, 2005 2:41 PM Subject: [FairfieldLife] "Purity of the teaching" (was Re: Lenz -- Sex and Business Practices / Ethics) ---That phrase is the ultimate thought-stopper, as wielded by the TM fundamentalist. It is *supposed* to stop the discussion. *Nothing* trumps "purity of the teaching." *Anything* is permissible to "defend* it, including acts that are illegal (such as dismissing a student from a university for "wrong thought" or sending some- one home from a course with no refund for violating a simple (and simple-minded) rule like, "Thou shalt go straight to the kitchen after evening lecture and have thy warm milk with cardamon and then go straight to bed and thou shalt do all of this in silence."I had a good friend who has a hilarious way of describ- ing the epiphany of figuring all of this stuff out. He was on an ATR course in Switzerland, and was told in no uncertain terms to follow the above "rule." The trouble was, he *hated* warm milk and cardamon. So his routine was to walk across the street to the next hotel and buy an ice-cream cone, and take it back to his room, all in silence. He was called on the carpet for this by the course leaders several times. He ignored them. Finally, he was told in no uncertain terms to show up at a certain time for a "tribunal" (yes, they really called it that), in which he was to be interrogated, and at the end of which he was either going to be sent home in disgrace, never to be allowed to return to another TM course again, or repent of his evil ways, change his behavior, and be allowed to stay.So he's sitting in this waiting room, waiting, and he's scared. Really scared. His entire life is on the line. He *knows*, from experience, what happens to TM teachers who have been declared "off the program." He *knows* that his entire access to advanced techniques or any future teachings from Maharishi is on the line. He hears not another word about it.He goes back home at the end of his ATR course, and naturally the next time he applies for another course he is barred from attending it. But by this time he really doesn't care, because he's still laughing.I can understand the descision of this board. I would'nt want an initiator myself eating icecream all the time, not being able to take instruction from his teacher or to be unable to articulate himself. [FairfieldLife] Purity of the teaching (was Re: Lenz -- Sex and Business Practices / Ethics)
--I think rather than trying todefeatp.t.ie make them look ridiculous Castaneda was trying to make the point that the petty tyrants in our life(that is people who have power and abuse it eg bosses etc)are people from whom we can learn how not to be emotionally reactive or self important (the latter two things are closely related).Mastering the art of dealing with petty tyrants means we have gone a long way toward losing our self importance and increasing our capacity to not take things that others do personally. This in turn has the effect of increasing our personal power which ironically makes much us more effective in dealing with petty tyrants or anyone else. (getting involved in battles with petty tyrants/others can be very draining-dealing with from them a place of non-attachment eliminates this loss of energy s.t. which was very important in Castanedas system)Kevin - In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Rick Archer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: on 6/16/05 10:20 AM, TurquoiseB at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Petty tyrants are able to be tyrants only because people allow them to do so.
