seeking placement for three feluk positive kittens

2007-10-01 Thread JENI RECA

Hi,

Just when I found placement for the adult feluk positive, now three kittens
need placement. The woman was going to take them to the vet to pts them, but I
told her I would take them and find a home for them. They are about 8-9 weeks
old and tested positive yesterday. Need help yet again. They are tabbys and
very cute. I am picking them up from the lady today, I don't know if they are
boys are or girls yet. I know they are a little scared, she found them in her
backyard. There are actually five, but I can't take all five. She might try to
find a home for the other two. Anyone out there want one, two or three kittens
to add to their home. Willing to travel, food included, will spay/neutered
them.
Thank you
Jeni

If they are 8-9 weeks old, SNAP tests are very inaccurate. I would
not even bother testing a kitten that age. They need to be retested
in 6 months to see if they are actually positive or not.

I got the results of Yoda's fecal back and it's totally negative- even the
flotation. Now I don't know what to do and I pretty much told the Doctor that
(what do I do!?). He doesn't seem to think it's from the antibiotic. Yoda
was the first started on it at Labor Day and he was on it 10 days, so he's been
off it a long time. I was also surprised that none of the kittens had diarrhea
while actually on Amoxy (Monkee always got soft stools when on Clavamox).
Anyway, he said it could be a virus of some kind, but it's definitely not
bacterial or parasites. He asked about their exposure- which is basically
nill, so he was fine with that. He said it could still be giardia because that
doesn't show up in a fecal-- that they need the sample immediately because
giardia is like bubbles and you can see them really clearly under a
microscope if you get the sample immediately-- pretty much from butt to
microscope (that's what he said- not me)-- but within a few seconds, they start
to burst I guess and then you can't see them. This is how he described it. I
told him the diarrhea smells HORRIBLE and he said h... He wanted to know
when it started and I guessed about Monday. He said that is not too much time
so he isn't worried yet. He said to try giving them all Liquid Immodium AD-
1/4 teaspoon and see if that helps. If not, we will try some other things (I
guess looking for giardia). I'm going to give it this weekend I guess. I
have two thoughs: #1) it's a random virus that they could have picked up when
we went to Sat. cat adoption day. Although I kept all mine in a separate pen
and they did not meet any of the condo cats at the store, they were in the same
general area and if it's possible they could get an airborne stomach virus just
by being in the same area, maybe that's it? #2)

Re: FeLV Help for a 5 year old male cat

2007-10-01 Thread Belinda

   Gina,
Take a breath and then seriously consider taking Whisper to another
vet, this vet doesn't seem to have a clue. Do you have Whispers blood
work results, if so can you post his HCT, RBC, HGB? Has his teeth been
checked, drooling can mean bad teeth, stomach upset among other things?
Bailey had teeth problems towards the end of his life and had to have
all his teeth pulled, it helped get him eating again. He did fine
without teeth. Teenye my negative baby girl also ate fine without teeth
and she liked dry food!

If you are in an area big enough, go through the phone book and call
around to different vets and let them know you are looking for a new
vet. Ask them to have the vet call you to ask a few questions, if they
call, interview them, explain your circumstances and let them know what
you are looking for in a vet. If they don't call you they aren't worth
bothering with.

It sounds like what Bailey was doing when he had his teeth problems, any
vet should be able to spot this easily.

You should be able to get copies of the tests to take to any new vet or
have the old vet transfer them, my guess is the old vet will want to
charge a fee to do this, which is acceptable as long as it isn't ridiculous.

Another thing to think about, is that if you switch vets now, the new vet
will want to run all the same tests over again.

RE: Quality Foods

2007-10-01 Thread Dawn Morrison
I went out this weekend and purchased the Wellness Core dry and some cans of
wet. Bea LOVES the wet food but wasn't all that interested in the dry.
I mixed the dry kitten food she'd been eating with some of the Wellness and she
still wouldn't eat it. Finally I put down a bowl of just her kitten food and
she ate half the bowl, poor thing probably thought I was starving her.
My husband said to just keep the mixed old kitten and new Wellness down and
eventually she'll eatI'm not to sure about that.

My cat and kittens really love the Wellness brand wet food (reccomended by my
Holistic vet). And I mean they LOVE it! They eat it as if it's one of the
brands like Sheba or Fancy Feast-- they just freak out over it. You can also
tell it's such a high-quality food just by the look of it and the smell...some
varieties, like the adult wet formula, the one that has Lobster in it-- really
smells like human food...it's crazy. It's pretty expensive though. I have my
one year adult cat on Wellness adult wet and Wellness Core dry- which is
Wellness's new high-protein food that is trying to take account for the raw
food diet and translate that, as best it can, into a dry cat food. I have had
this one year old cat since the end of July and she came to me (as a two-time
owner surrender) as skinny, frail, tiny necked, underweight more than a
kitten-than-a-cat. Already, she's packed on tons of muscle, but no extra
weight. She's matured into an adult cat
overnight almost and she's not longer skinny and wimpy-- she's tough and beefy
and all filled-out, but she doesn't have an once of fat on her body. It's been
really great to watch the transition and I do think it's all due to her diet,
supplements and her happy home life.

I took my little 2 year old, Bea, to a holistic/hemopathetic vet last night. He
said she is doing very well and doesn't show any signs of the illness - thank
God!
He put her on Transfer Factor Plus (which many of you had mentioned, thank you)
and also Engystol.
I was wondering if anyone has heard of Engystol before or are currently using
it?

He also gave me a very LARGE list of better quality foods wet/dry to put her on.
Does anyone have a particular brand they like over another? Pros/Cons to any
brands?

I also wanted to share something he said to me. We were getting ready to leave
and I asked if there was anything special I should do for her? He said Yes,
she doesn't know she is sick - so don't treat her like she is.
I immediately burst into tears, this vet is a keeper.

Thanks

My cats won't always accept a new food, even done this way. I actually take

Good luck. I just bought some CORE, too. I am currently feeding EVO Innova dry

Mine ate canned Wellness turkey and salmon for yearsno grain in that

Caroline,

This sounds so much like the problems Kitty had with food allergies and
pancreas problems. I really think you need to get her checked for those items.
You can do an elimination diet fairly easily. If the pancreas is causing
problems you want to know it now.

Take care.

Anyway, he said it could be a virus of some kind, but it's definitely not

I went out this weekend and purchased the Wellness Core dry and some cans of
wet. Bea LOVES the wet food but wasn't all that interested in the dry.

I mixed the dry kitten food she'd been eating with some of the Wellness and
she still wouldn't eat it. Finally I put down a bowl of just her kitten food
and she ate half the bowl, poor thing probably thought I was starving her.

My husband said to just keep the mixed old kitten and new Wellness down and

My cat and kittens really love the Wellness brand wet food (reccomended by
my Holistic vet). And I mean they LOVE it! They eat it as if it's one of
the brands like Sheba or Fancy Feast-- they just freak out over it. You can
also tell it's such a high-quality food just by the look of it and the
smell...some varieties, like the adult wet formula, the one that has Lobster
in it-- really smells like human food...it's crazy. It's pretty expensive
though. I have my one year adult cat on Wellness adult wet and Wellness
Core dry- which is Wellness's new high-protein food that is trying to take
account for the raw food diet and translate that, as best it can, into a
dry cat food. I have had this one year old cat since the end of July and
she came to me (as a two-time owner surrender) as skinny, frail, tiny
necked, underweight more than a kitten-than-a-cat. Already, she's packed on
tons of muscle, but no extra weight. She's matured into an adult cat
overnight almost and she's not longer skinny and wimpy-- she's tough and
beefy and all filled-out, but she doesn't have an once of fat on her body.
It's been really great to watch the transition and I do think it's all due
to her diet, supplements and her happy home life.

I took my little 2 year old, Bea, to a holistic/hemopathetic vet last night.
He said she is doing very well and doesn't show any signs of the illness -
thank God!
He put her on Transfer Factor Plus (which many of you had mentioned, thank
you) and also Engystol.
I was wondering if anyone has heard of Engystol before or are currently
using it?

He also gave me a very LARGE list of better quality foods wet/dry to put her
on.
Does anyone have a particular brand they like over another? Pros/Cons to any
brands?

I also wanted to share something he said to me. We were getting ready to
leave and I asked if there was anything special I should do for her? He said
Yes, she doesn't know she is sick - so don't treat her like she is.
I immediately burst into tears, this vet is a keeper.

Thanks

RE: Kitten update Take 2

2007-10-01 Thread Caroline Kaufmann

I talked to the Vet today and he says it could be bacterial enteritis so he had
prescribed a medicine that I am picking up today to treat Yoda with. The vet
says we will try that and if that doesn't clear up the diarrhea, Yoda will go
in for further testing, smears, etc. So, I'm going to give it a try. Yoda is
not in distress and he's still eating and playing fine-- seems to be loving
life-- so as long as he feels good, I am going to stick with this game plan.
It's just a little frustrating. I like to have all completely healthy kitties
so I can brag! I'm just kidding...kind of.

I took pictures of them this weekend, so once we get them loaded on the
computer, I would like to share them. Each of the three kittens I have all
have completely unique, different faces...it's beautiful and interesting to
think about how they have such unique faces...which also translates into unique
personalities. It's kind of scary.

Caroline,

This sounds so much like the problems Kitty had with food allergies and
pancreas problems. I really think you need to get her checked for those items.
You can do an elimination diet fairly easily. If the pancreas is causing
problems you want to know it now.

Take care.

The diarrhea contiunes but it's now mostly affecting Yoda. The other two will
have normal poos, and then sometimes soft, cow-pie poos, but they are not
having the runny, watery, sometimes mucousy diarrhea Yoda is now having. I'm
just baffeled. And upset for him. I went to scoop him up yesterday and he
tried to dodge me (he's wiley), so instead of getting scruff or the mid-section
of his body, I got only his hind quarters and I grabbed on. Well, the poor
thing simulanteously let out a baby-bird/girly squeal and also passed gas at
the same time (really loudly). I thought some diarrhea may have shot out
accidently (it hadn't) when I grabbed him because the passing gas noise was so
loud. I felt so bad- his tummy must have been bothering him. So I immediately
put him in his crate in his litter box and the poor thing immediately had
really gassy, totally liquidy diarrhea. I know, it's gross, I'm sorry! I felt
so bad for him. He also had to get a bath yesterday morning because his feet
were all pooy from a night in the crate- his litter box was a mess, he'd had
two boughts of diarrhea/cow pies thru the night- I couldn't really tell if it
was diarrhea because he'd spent a lot of time burying them, hence the dirty
feet. He was good for his bath tho! He's getting Immodium AD and it seems to
not be working at all! But he's still status quo- eating like a piggy,
drinking water, running around and playing fine. I guess I will call the Vet
and see what he has to say...I myself had been sick since Tuesday the 18th!!!
I only took one day off work because I thought it was just allergies/change of
season, etc., so I didn't go to the Dr. because I didn't want to be put on an
antibiotic that would just destroy my stomach...I pushed myself too much last
weekend and ended up with laryngitis. I finally got my voice back last Wed.
and thought all was well. Well, Friday at work I felt intense muscle pain and
my neck hurt, I felt like I would throw up-- it was horrible. I finally just
went home early and admitted to myself that I had a fever! No other symptoms
besides a fever and just feeling like I might die. So I spent a miserable Fri.
night freezing to death on my couch. By Sat. my fever had broke, but I still
felt horrible, so it was couch-time again. I think I am all recovered now but
my mom is so mad at me (for not going to the Dr.) and she says that the kitties
and I are all making each other sick!-- but she's crazy! -Caroline

Re: seeking placement for three feluk positive kittens

2007-10-01 Thread gary
I haven't heard of the SNAP test being any more inclined toward false
positives on young kittens when testing for feluk. I have heard that if you
are testing young kittens for FIV there is a good chance of a false positive
from antibodies in their mother's milk if she was positive. This usually
clears away by 4 to 6 months so, testing kittens for FIV before that doesn't
give a true indication.

Re: seeking placement for three feluk positive kittens

It is a fact that many kittens that test pos at 8 weeks will test neg.
at 16 weeks...

Some people say 6 months to be sure but from my personal experience the
test at 16 weeks is about 80% accurate

A word about Jeni... She is very active in short term fostering and holding
kitties until she can get them in a no kill shelter... She is probably
responsible
for saving more kitties from PTS in one month than most of us are in a
lifetime...

She probably already has both pos and neg. kitties isolated from each other
in her home and what these kitties need is a home that has neither pos or
neg. as they can go either way in the next few weeks
This might be a great opportunity for some people who have said that they
have worked with FeLV but currently don't have any to help out for just
a short

while to see which way they go...
I believe these kitties are in the NYC, Long Island area.

2007-10-01 Thread JENI RECA

Hi,
Thank you Tad for your kind words, and yes you have my situation right.
Ideally I would love to find placement for them all together in a home without
cats, because there is a slight chance they could not be feluk positive at all.
But I don't know anyone that could possibly do this that I know and I can't.
I could hold them for a week or so but need placement. They are a bit more
under socialized then I was told, hissies little kitties. Right now one of
them threw up and they have diarreha(sp?) so off to the vet this week and will
have them checked out. Any suggestion or help is highly appreciated. Thank you

thanks again Tad, hope all the kitties are doing well.
