[Felvtalk] Off topic - for those who are interested: Fracking/Earthquakes in Arkansas

2011-07-29 Thread Natalie
Remember we "talked" about fracking? With so much of it going on, seems
logical that it could do that! I always wondered if drilling for oil too
much in one area might undermine the area's sound structure..h Natalie

Fracking Operations Cause Thousands of Earthquakes in Arkansas
Mike Ludwig, Truthout: "Geologists say fracking wastewater disposal wells in
central Arkansas caused an outbreak of thousands of minor earthquakes. The
Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission placed a ban on fracking wastewater wells in
the area yesterday. A moratorium on well activity had been in place for
months as geologists investigated a possible link between fracking activity
and the outbreak of more than 1,200 earthquakes that measured lower than 4.7
in magnitude."

2011-07-29 Thread Lynda Wilson
Natalie, It makes sense to me and I'm no expert. We had some here at DFW
airport (Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX) and there were earthquakes in Cleburne, TX as
well. None were ever reported until after fracking.

Not only does fracking cause earthquakes, it can ruin a home's foundation
too. The drillers (gas mafia) won't pay for any damages to the
land/homeowner either.

There is such a drought across the U.S., yet they can use millions of
gallons of fresh water per fracked well and not recycle any of it because it
would cost them $$$, therefore, they would not profit as much. Here is a map
(see link below) of Texas showing wells fracked from 1997 to 2010 (click on
the small blue box to the left or the 1997 date on the upper right of map).
The "dots" that appear in black were fracked vertically, red is horizontal
fracking. I'd like to get away from it. I just can't right now. We are
putting our home for sale next year after my oldest son graduates. We want
to live off of a shale. Our town has recently implemented the toughest O & G
ordinances anyone can have, but the adjoining town does not. I live less
than 2 miles from that town's border and there will be 24+ gas wells on that
pad site when they are done :( I'm not risking my families health
(including my pets) over their greed.

Wow, Lynda, that is scary!! I feel for you having to move because
of those gas wells. As I wrote to the group a few weeks ago, we also
had to leave our home because of gas wells!

Greetings Everyone,

We recently took in a kitten someone was going to put down from our vet, and
last night I was awaken in the middle of the night by a howling noise, i
thought it was our older cat but it was the kitten, she was growling in the

was back to her loving self this morning? I'm so confused I've never seen an
animal behave like that? When my older cat was dx he was more so "sick" we

[Felvtalk] Intro New Cat Quick Style

2011-07-29 Thread Bonnie Hogue
Hi Everyone

Life can be stressful sometimes.

My aunt is going into assisted living (suddenly) and I'm taking her cat. I
took my mom's cat, Lucky, last Fall, and he's become part of the household
very nicely. This little cat, Princess, is a sweet and mild-mannered little
one. I took her to the vet today for a checkup and unfortunately he spied a
growth on her tongue. He's biopsied it (so we will know) and I'm picking
her up in a couple hours.

The thing is, this is very sudden and I haven't had much time to prepare.
And I'm going to be gone 12 or more hours a day next week (eek). I can put
her in the spare bedroom until the Felv test comes back. But I don't want
her to be freaked out or too frightened. I'm hoping that instead of a three
weeks, I can try to integrate her in a week or two.

This will make FIVE indoor cats for me. I've never had so many. The vet
said, "Well, four or five isn't much different." Bless him.

What's the conventional wisdom out there? Leave her in the room 7-14 days,
or longer?

Thanks for your input!

Sorry, didn't reply to your other question
What I would normally do, would be to keep Princess in a separate room for a
few days, exchange the cats beddings so that they can intermingle the
scentsthen, if you have one, place her in a large cage, with a sheet
over the sleeping area for privacy, that way the other 4 cats and she could
meet safely...I always do that when I introduce a new cat to a large group
of cats. Sometimes it takes a few days, sometimes more, depending on how the
cats ineract.

Re: [Felvtalk] Question

2011-07-29 Thread MaiMaiPG
My very sweet little girl, Mi Tu, turned into a problem cat because of
bladder stones. I took her to the vets several times. They checked
her, did routine lab tests and everything they could think of. I was
finally at the end of my rope and they had been doing their research.
The vets drew urine from the bladder. The stones were there and we
got her the treatment she needed. She was in a lot of pain but the
symptoms presented were for a behavioral disorder.

You will be fine. I suggest you rub the other cats with a towel and
put it where she can smell it and do the same to her. This really
does help. I love Feliway and use it frequently but I use the spray.
I use Rescue Remedy too.

Re: [Felvtalk] Question

2011-07-29 Thread Edna Taylor

What did your vet do for the stones. Bug has kidney stones and the vet said
that there really is not a lot they can do for those. I tried feeding her the
special food but she wouldn't eat it and the vet said if she is eating anything
else (very hard to feed individually when you have more than 10 cats) then it
was not doing her any good to eat the prescription diet :(

Re: [Felvtalk] Question

2011-07-29 Thread MaiMaiPG
It has been 15 + years since she left this world (not related to the
stones). There were antibiotics and steriods I think. Somehow I
think there was meds to deal with the urine PH. Sorry I can't give
more information. Now I would check with a holistic vet as well as my
regular vets.

My very sweet little girl, Mi Tu, turned into a problem cat because
of

bladder stones.

I'm no expert here, but this doesn't sound to me as though it's
related to
FeLV. My first inclination would be to look for something causing
painful
elimination.

Good luck to you,
Sara

Greetings Everyone,

We recently took in a kitten someone was going to put down from our
vet, and
last night I was awaken in the middle of the night by a howling
noise, i
thought it was our older cat but it was the kitten, she was
growling in the
corner and for some reason went to the bathroom on the floor
instead of her
litter box, is this common among FeLV cats? It was dr jeckle and
Mr. Hyde,
she was back to her loving self this morning? I'm so confused I've
never
seen an animal behave like that? When my older cat was dx he was
more so
"sick" we thought he swallowed a bone? talk about one of the worst
days
ever!

Has anyone else had this happen?

Re: [Felvtalk] Intro New Cat Quick Style

2011-07-29 Thread dlgegg
I also got my "new" ones suddenly so I had a few hissing, slapping episodes to
begin with, but now we are settld down to just a few episodes. Mostly it
happens when someone rounds a corner at the same time as someone else coming
from te opposite direction. It has never gone beyond slaps and hisses. Becuse
of the felv issus, you might have to isolate her at first, but ifyou gve her
lots of love wen you get home and don't ignore your boy, shouldn't be too bad.
Maybe a friend/neighbor could come in for a few minutes each day and love on
both of them to comfort them?
