Out of my 3 males from the same litter, only 1 tested positive. Their Mom has
never tested positive. His brothers have always been negative. No doctor or
specialist we have dealt with, can explain this.

It is common for this to happen. I trapped 5 plus mom, mom was
snap negative, runt was positive, 4 others were negative. 6 weeks
later one of the negatives got a fever, was retested, and was
positive. We think the first test was done too soon after his last
exposure, there was not enough antigen yet in his body for the test to
detect. Some vets will wrongly try to tell you that they will all
eventually test positive. This is definitely not true. Three of our
negative littermates are now 4.5 years old and still negative.
As far as why this happens, there are a few different theories,
but no one knows for sure. One that I have heard is that they could
be infected by a nanny cat. In our case we only did the Elisa on the
momma, then spayed and released her. Had we done an IFA, she may have
showed positive. Following is a link to a chart which shows what
testing path to follow based on the results that you are getting.

 Hi all,

This is in reply to the poster who asked about anyone with recent successes
with LTCI. My 6 year old FELV + (since birth) cat, Aggie, has been on LTCI
since June and her bloodwork has improved a great deal. For the first time
in her life, her WBC is firmly in the normal range. Prior to this, low
normal of 4.2 was the best we had, and that was not often that it was that
high. Usually 3.8 or 4.0 when we would run tests. It was 4.8 as of the last
test a month or two ago (up from 2.0) two months prior.

She gets a shot every two weeks. We started her when aspects of her
bloodwork started going steadily downhill: neutrophils, WBC, and platelets.
We were going to stretch it out to monthly, but she had a seizure when we
went longer (though now I suspect it might have been the insecticide that was
sprayed outside the house a few days before, --and she likes to sit at the
screen door) and it is two weeks for the forseeable future. No seizures in 3
months (knock on wood), weight is good, and most recent bloodwork has been
the best of her life. She also gets Alpha interferon daily (since birth--so
for 6 and a half years now), and I mix a little bit of astragalus into her
wet food every night (for the last year--since her surgery to remove an
adenocarcinoma of the salivary gland in July of 2009).

While I don't think the LTCI is a cure, we did notice an improvement in
bloodwork, and the weight she started to lose came back. I think it is
probably keeping her head above water. I get weird when I talk about her
success--I'm always afraid I'm going to jinx her or something. Stupid, I
 know.

I'm sorry I don't post more--when I try to hit the reply button at the

the Rutin-she said they used it for another condition but had never

Since fluids are so important to keep a cat from dehydrating and keeping
organs functioning, an option might be about 100-150 mL of subcutaneous
fluids given daily or every second day - it's easy to learn how to do
yourself and saves a lot of lives in the long run! Could your vet give
Murphy an injection of Vitamin C, B12 etc - could be a great booster.

Hi, my cat was the picture of health about two weeks ago. She’s 2 years
old, female, spayed, orange tabby. She would literally bounce off the walls
running around the house. She’s so wonderful ♥

Anyway, about two weeks ago, she started sleeping constantly, and one day
(9/17) I noticed her nose, gums, and pads had turned white…instead of
their normal pink. So I took her in and they took some blood…said that day
that she is VERY anemic L Since that was a Friday, we got the results the
following Monday. FeLV L She barely eats, almost never uses the litter box
(and her urine is pretty dark when she does go), sleeps almost 24 hours a
day, and has lost a bit of weight (not good when she only started at 7lbs
 in the first place L).

I got her Pet-tinic vitamins cuz a vet suggested them. I tried to get her
to drink kitten formula cuz I figured part of it’s job is to help kittens
build up their immune systems. She was put on antibiotics the Monday that
her tests came back. After 4-5 days, she began refusing the medicine. It’s
a liquid and she would spit it all back out. So, she probably didn’t get
 all she was supposed to.

When she does eat, it is usually just the liquid part of canned cat food.
She is still able to jump off the bed and walk to the kitchen (where the
dry food bowl and litter box are), but usually wears out on her way back
out of the kitchen, and lays down. She is so skinny…I’m not even sure she
has much muscle left. She has always been skinny, but not like this.

Well, a few days ago, her white pads and nose started turning yellow. I
know that has something to do with her liver not working right.

Oh yeah…the way the vet put her anemia…normal range is 29%-45% (or
something like that), and my kitty’s came back at 16% L

Does anyone have any advice as to what we could do to help her? How will we
 know if she has pain?

The vet that gave us the results (a substitute cuz regular vet was out for
the week) said if she makes it the next couple months, and seems any
better, to get her re-tested. That some cats fight it off and can test
negative a couple months later. So, that means SOME cats get over this. And
I read online that some cats live for a few years with it, after showing
symptoms. Just gives me a little hope…then I look at her…and she looks so
bad…and I think there isn’t much hope. So hard to watch.

At what point do you give up and have an FeLV+ cat put to sleep? I figured
if she shows signs of being in pain (once I know what those are), or has a
seizure, or absolutely stops eating and drinking anything, that it would be
time. I don’t want her to suffer, but I also want to give her every chance
 to survive…ya know?

Anyway, thanks for letting me go on and on…as you can tell this is really
very hard on me emotionally, as I’m sure it is on anyone and everyone who
 has to deal with it.

got so upset. She would start panting like she couldn't catch her breath. We
were to go back to the vet today. This morning she wasn't able to walk very
well and was having problems breathing.

So we made that final trip to the vet. Thankfully my dear neighbor drove us.
Rocket normally starts with heavy breathing when we go to the vet. This
morning was worse than normal. She had a small seizure as we were entering
the vet's office and died there in my arms. Her little heart just gave up.
I'm sure she had some type of tumor. Wasn't anemia like Sissy.

She was such a good girl. Never a big love bug but enjoyed playing with the
feather toy and loved her treats. Even this last week she was rubbing my leg
as I was preparing the food plates. Another reason it was so heartbreaking
 when she wouldn't eat.

Rocket is my last FeLV baby. I do feel fortunate to have had her for almost 4
yrs. I 1st met her at the dumpsters July '06. She was one of 5 kittens that
would come running when I showed up with food. Spooky vanished but over time
I was able to trap Rocket, Sissy, Daisy and Mae. Rocket and Sissy became
house kitties. Daisy and Mae were much older when I trapped them and became
garage kitties. Now Daisy's babies and these four are gone. Leaves a big hole

just wondering how many of us here have ever had a bone-marrow

suggested as a normal part of the FeLV testing protocol?

here's a really good article on the different forms of leukemia and
treatments--they don't mention the date on it, tho, but someone could
probably find it.

Hello all:

This weekend I got lost driving in an industrial part of my town.
Suddenly in the middle of the street, I see a tiny kitten. Luckily
I was able to avoid hitting him, as was the car behind me. I
quickly got out of my car and approached the kitten. Imagine my
surprise when he willingly and eagerly came running right up to me.
I scooped him up and continued on my way.

I noticed when I tried to feed him that something wasn't quite
right. He kept falling over and seemed very uncoordinated, even for
a kitten. I took him to the emergency vet where I was told that he
had some kind of neurological disorder that was presenting itself in
his legs. Basically he is just going to be clumsy. The vet said it
could be a static problem and not get any worse or it could be
progressive, at which time we would have to discuss other options.

She also recommended the FeLV/FIV test. Sadly, he came up a weak
positive for FeLV. The vet said this may be the cause of the
neurological disorder or the two could be unrelated. Also his
pupils were not well dilated (the vet did not go on to explain what
effect that has). When the vet gave me the positive results, she
asked if I wanted to put him to sleep. In the mere 4 hours we had
spent together, this little 6 week old kitten had won my heart and I
just couldn't put him to sleep. Although he is clumsy (it's
actually really cute and I believe he will soon learn to compensate
for it), you really don't notice the neurological impairment unless
you are looking for it; and he's happy and pain-free otherwise.

But of course there is a problem. I have already have a FeLV
negative cat at home and I don't want to risk exposing her. I was
able to take the little guy, who we named Tommy, to my boyfriend's,
but my cat and I are moving in with him in 2 months, so this likely
cannot be a permanent home.

So this is why I have turned to this group. I would like to take
the time I have to try to get Tommy in the best health I can. I did
some research and found out about Mega C plus, interferon and LTCI.
I would like to speak to someone in depth about these options, but
my vet just doesn't have experience in this area.

1. Does anyone know a good vet that will help treat the FeLV in the
Los Angeles area - preferable Glendale/Pasadena/the San Fernando
valley area.

2. If I am in successful in getting him to the point where he tests
negative, can he stay with my FeLV negative cat. She's older and
will likely want nothing to do with him so I am not too worried
about them directly interacting. But I am worried that they may
share toys or bowls.

3. Does anyone know of any rescue organizations that would take on
a FeLV positive kitten?

My boyfriend and I already love and adore Tommy, but we understand
that we must do what is best for him. It's just confusing trying to
figure out what that is. I would welcome and suggestions or advise.

Thank you,

Fernanda

I haven't been really active on here since, but I thought I'd post
again with an update. My original introduction message is copied
below.

It is with sadness that I report that Stitch, who I mentioned
originally has having been tested shortly after Chewie died has now
left us, almost exactly 3 years after Chewie did.

Stitch has done great these last few years, we never had any
problems and had some hopes that she might have fought the virus off.

Sadly, this was not the case. She started acting sick this weekend
and we brought her to the vet on Tuesday. She'd lost a few pounds
since her last visit, and a blood test revealed that she was very
low on red blood cells, the Vet thinking that she had a bone marrow
disease as she didn't seem to have any new red blood cells at all
(could this be myeloproliferative leukemia, which I've seen
mentioned in other places?). Given that she was FELV positive and
was clearly suffering, we decided to have her put to sleep.

Anyway, though I haven't been really active here, folks were very
helpful after my initial post and the info and support I did get
here were instrumental in keeping Stich as healthy as she was for as
long as she was. It's still really hard, but I know that we did
everything that we could for her.

She was a very special kitty, and she'll be greatly missed.

Howdy all,

This is my first post to this list, thought I'd do a
bit of intro.

We had three cats in our family. The older two were
both castaways that were adopted as adults. Zoro was
the oldest and I adopted him from a co-worker when I
lived by myself. He died several years ago.

The remaining two were Stitch and Chewie. Chewie was
the next oldest. She had a really hard start to life,
she was originally found, as a stray by some friends
of ours. She was probably two or three at the time and
she had evidence of being abused - she had some
suspicious scars on her underside.

She lived with them for a while, very shy/nervous and
eventually came out of her shell. A couple years
later, they had to move, and couldn't take her with
them so we took her in. We had her for several years
as well and while we don't know her exact age, best
estimate put her at 8-10 years old when she died last
month.

She had a loss of appetite and started losing weight.
She had two trips to the Vet - after the first visit
she took a serious turn for the worse so we had her
back at the vet only a few days later. A blood test on
the second visit revealed that she had FelV. So,
considering she was very sick and was suffering from a
pretty serious disease we opted to put her to sleep
then. :(

I didn't know much about FelV then (and I'm still
learning about it), but information from both our Vet
and online resources I found indicated that it was
contagious so we decided to have our third (and
youngest) cat tested for it. Stitch is the only one we
got as a Kitten and she's about 3.5 years old.

I brought her to the vet this weekend and she tested
positive for FelV. :(

I do intend to learn as much as I can about the
disease so we can keep her with us as long as
possible. I know that it will eventually catch up to
her and our main thing will be to put that off as long
as possible. She's still young and healthy so
hopefully that'll be a long time still. :)

We had been planning to get a second cat, but we've
put that plan on hold now. I know it is possible to
inoculate against FelV, but given that the vaccine
takes a while to take effect, we'd either have to
quarantine the new cat until the vaccine took effect
or find it someplace else to live for a month or so,
and on top of all that I don't think we want to put
Stitch through the stress of another housemate at the
moment (she doesn't react well to strangers).

Thanks,

Joe

keeps me wondering if I should try it despite the warnings. I'm so
glad you had these results with Epogen. I actually had the vet
research WHY it could possibly help a leuk positive cat because of
your story. I can't find one vet that can explain why it could
possibly help since a leuk positive cat is normally making
erythropoietin just fine on it's own. That's not to say it has
never helped. She has heard of cases but said there is no
biological/medical reason it should help . Does anybody know how or
why it might help a cat with nonregenerative anemia?

I just want to say that the vet that told me this is most likely not
flat out lying. She is a highly recommended internal med from
Cornell University. She has been absolutely wonderful and has
researched everything I've asked her about extensively. When I
asked her about Epogen she didn't have to research it because she
did have experience with it, with cats with CRF and cats without. I
did A LOT of searching of all the medical facilities within hundreds
of miles to find a specialist that actually deals with leukemia and
treats cats with it regularly. Many vets in my area have never even
seen a positive cat other than the ones they euthanize. I've lost
one cat after another to leukemia and despite trying one thing after
another, have never been able to bring one back from nonregenerative
anemia. My cat that is currently being treated by Cornell is stable
and holding his own 6 months after being diagnosed. I don't believe
that would be the case
without her help. I totally understand people on here feeling that
most vets know nothing about leukemia but I just wanted to say that
I spent A LOT of time and effort trying to locate a vet that would
do the best possible job for this cat and it stings a bit to hear
somebody say she is flat out lying to me or doesn't know how to use
Epogen. Anyways, I don't post on here a lot and was nervous about
saying anything about my fears of Epogen because I thought it might
ruffle some feathers. I just couldn't at least throw it out there
because I personally would feel awful if I did something to speed up
how quickly this disease can take down a positive cat. I really
think each person needs to do what they are comfortable with and I
just wanted to throw out what I heard on the off chance it is
accurate.

I'd love to hear from others that have tried Epogen too.

   Amy,
This vet is either flat out lying or isn't using it
correctly.

It is very rare but a cat can have a reaction and that
reaction is that it wouldn't help and the HCT would continue
to go down, in some cases this is because the dose isn't
high enough, a few kitties need higher than the standard
dose. But of course the vets freak out and assume the
cat is having a reaction. So many vets are terrified
of this drug and it doesn't make sense, basically if it
isn't working you would be right back where you started.
It is documented that about 10% to 30% of cats would fall
into this category and of those it takes 5 months or longer
of use for this to happen.

I know many, many people who have used it and only know of
one cat that is was suspected had this happen and I honestly
don't think that was the problem, I think that cat wasn't
getting a high enough dose. Most of these cats are CRF
but a few aren't and were anemic because of cancer or
something else.

I've told Bailey's story more than once, he was positive,
he became anemic and once his HCT got to 20%, I decided to
try epogen, I think he was barely regenerative but honestly
it has been so long I can't remember. He did not have
kidney disease.

By the time we got the epogen in it took a few days, he had
gone to 18% and once we started it went down to 15%, it took
about 6 weeks to get his HCT to 40% which is a little
quicker than you would like but he was fine and his HCT was
still normal at 33%, 34% 5 months later when he died of
pancreatic cancer.

You do have to monitor the blood pressure because it can go
high, Bailey's did the opposite and got low but we had no
problems with the epogen.

My vet has used it several times with FeLV+ cats and had
luck with it.

getting ready to take him off the chemo drug start cyclosporin
once again try to slowly reduce his pred. We did interferon LTCI
injections. He test negative now for FeLV. There is always a 3-4 week
lag time before you start to see the increase in the Hematocrit with
Pred. We have been going through this since Sept. 2008.

was on

Hi all. My 1 year old FeLV+ male cat has started to have some hair
loss on
his head and neck. I noticed a bit of a bald spot on his neck a few
days
ago with a small scratch (he plays rough with his brother). I
didn't think
anything of it as I thought maybe he just scratched the hair off.
Then I
noticed that the top of his head had some balding spot. This
evening I
noticed an entire clump of hair missing on top of his head. I
haven't seen
him scratch or act any differently. He still lets me pet him. I
haven't

changed his diet or environment. He seems to be eating normally and
drinking too. I'm at a loss. I plan to call my vet and take him in
if this
doesn't improve in the next couple days. Any ideas on what this
could be?

him. Nothing dramatic, but if it can help a cat that was given less

My vet ordered mine from Road Runner pharmacy in Arizona. I think it
was around $37 for what I *think* was 30ml (I can check tonight when
I get home). The $37 included shipping (it was overnighted and

My program for Kong is 1ml per day for seven days, and then off
seven days. So the bottle, while not exactly cheap, will last for a

Subject: [Felvtalk] Xana, FelV positive - interferon?

I am new to this group. I live in Spain and have some language
difficults, so, sorry for the faults.

I am an active member of a cat rescue group. In july I found a
kitten in the street with the eyes seriously dammaged. We went to
the vet and all was well, excep the positive result to FelV. A
friend on mine is fostering her. She seems to be healthy and hapy. I
want to give her an opportunity to live with good QOL as long as
possible.

Unfortunately most vets does not share my opinion, and they think it
is not worth.

I insist... I read all I can find.

I am giving Xana
L-Lysina (for her eye condicion)
Vetinmune (as inmunomodulator)

And I insist to put her on interferon. The vet said that -in that
subclinic stadium- the alfa (humane) interferon is the election
treatment. When symtoms appear, then it will be the moment to give
the omega interferon...

My questions are:
1) HAVE ANYONE EXPERIENCE IN THE USE OF FELINE OMEGA INTERFERON WITH
ASYMPTOMATIC CATS?? I know it can not clear the virus, but ... Can
it to prevent the development of any of the illness related with
FelV??

2) About propiobacterium acnes. I cant find it in Spain. The
laboratory does not produce it anymore, and change it for a new
product: Corynebacterium parvum (inmufort complex (R). It is used
for cows. A colegue (that has a FelV shelter) wrote me to advice she
is using it in her 8 FelV+ cats... she said is working well... her
oldest cat is now 8 years old.

3) Xana has also chronic diarrhea, in spite I put her on intestinal
diet, does no make solid faeces...

Any other non invasive tratment can be usefull???

Thanks for your atention

We have our fingers crossed!! We
arrived at our vet's office right after the shipment
arrived. Rosie and Murphy had their exams and blood drawn
for baselines-CBCs and their 3rd FeLV tests. We have
previous tests from June 3rd this year also. Those tests
showed that Murphy's levels were changing (similar to
Schatzi's who just passed less than a month ago). We are
really concerned for our last 2 cats because Rosie (tabby)
is the only female of the litter of 5-her 4 brothers have
passed away in the last 5 months from severe anemia. She has
just turned a year old last month-she insists on a game of
fetch several times a day with her lamb's wool mouse. (she
has plucked most of the wool off and I can't find another
one.) Murphy is a semi long haired, polydactyl, tuxedo boy
with 7 toes on each front foot and a spare on each hind
foot-He was dumped into the feral colony that Rosie and her
brothers came from. He is the sweetest boy, so playful and
just wants to
hang out with you-he follows you around like a dog. He
looks like he has Ov-Gloves on! Anyway-this disease seems
like a switch is flipped on and there is nothing we can do
to save them-we are hoping that using this product before
the symptoms of anemia appear will give us some chance of
them surviving for a long time. Maybe by taking a proactive
approach we will be able to turn the odds a little. We
are beginning with one injection a week for a month, then
every two weeks...to once a month. Blood will be drawn every
two weeks at first. We had the first injections at the vet's
office today (the tech did Murphy's and she watched while I
gave Rosie's). I will be giving the remaining 8 doses at
home to save costs. We'll have the blood test results back
Monday. Say a little prayer for us.

Along with LTCI, we also use Prednisolne. Our cats HCT stays within
normal limits, from 9% to 42%

Hello everyone,

I wanted to give you an update on Autumn and the TCLI injection
(Imulan).

When I brought her to the emergency center last Tuesday, she was
starting with respiratory distress and crying out. Her hematocrit
was 4%.
She was on her way out. She got the transfusion - they called me
about 1/4
of the way through and told me they didn't think she'd make it. She
did.
Since she's been home, each day her energy is improving. I got the
second
injection of TCLI and administered it on Saturday. Everyday she's
looking
better. She's sitting up, walking and drinking independently. This
may
only be the effects of the transfusion, so I am holding off
judgement for
now. I will be getting a CBC this week to see what we're dealing
with. In

the meantime, I am praying, and have her on Ambrotrose (a glycoprotein
supplement thought to help in the fight against felv), vitamin
supplements

and intermittently transfer factor. She hemolyzed (destroyed) many of
the red blood cells after the transfusion as she turned yellow
(jaundice -
secondary to breakdown of hemoglobin) but clinically her energy is
improving

and her alertness returning. I will keep you updated.

I pray that there is hope in this injection. It seems to me that the
science is pretty sound. Most vets aren't aware of this product and
have a
lot of suspicion surrounding any treatment to felv+. It is
reasonable since
their vet school training told them it was a fatal and untreatable
disease.

Most of us have experienced that first hand.

I had to search long and hard to find a vet that could help me, but
if you
call Imulan directly they are happy to talk with you or your vet. I
have

nothing but good experiences with them so far.

We shall see, good luck everyone.

After hearing about this product-I called our vet here in
Sacramento and
she agreed to order it for us. I want to try it because we lost the
4th
kitty this morning-my son drove him to UC Davis emergency early
this morning
because he was struggling to breath and crying out. Out of the 5
kittens in
the litter-Schatzi is the 4th brother to pass in 41/2 months-he
just turned
a year old this month- we even tried a transfusion that Jack had a
reaction

to and was euthanized (over $1500). Buster, the first to die-screamed
out...Oni died in Corey's arms. I still have the sister, Rosie and
another
cat-Murphy, the tuxedo polydactyl that was dumped into the feral
colony that
the litter came from-he was positive also. So why do I want to try
this
product? I have HOPE that it may prolong Rosie and Murphy's lives-
These 6
have been on antibiotics most of their lives-Finally now it's been
a good
month and a half without them, maybe we've turned a corner. We have
upped
them to Interferon 2x a day. When the FeLV switch gets tripped-they
just
crash so fast. If we can postpone it for months or years.that's
great.
We are down to 2 cats left out of 6-we have cried rivers of tears,
and spent
over 6 grand-and we weren't cat people a year ago. How do we know
it will
work? We don'tbut if we don't try, no one will know. What I do
know is
that Rosie is due to die soon-being from the same litter, she is
due to
crash with anemia like all her brothers. But I have HOPE, otherwise
I should
just euthanize the last 2 now and call it a day. Rosie and Murphy
are racing
up and down the hallway and up the cat trees right now-they are
healthy
(appearing), loving and happy. They are a year old-I think they
deserve to

live longer. Alice, Rosie and Murphy

LCTI has been around for years before imulan bought it, and it's been
promising for all that time. i think it'd be GREAT if it works, but
when you
have something that's not proven, you don't run out and put it on
the open

market priced and promoted as if it were proven.

that's my objection: it's too early, the science isn't there, and
if they
REALLY thought they had the answer to the FeLV problem, they'd be
doing
major clinical trials that every scientist in the country could
believe in.
and people don't have to pay to be in clinical trials, nor do they
have to

pay for the testing involved to see how things are going.

think how many FeLV parents would willingly partake in actual
clinical
trials if they weren't priced out of the option--and then imulan
could get

real data.
