Hi Sandy!

It's always a little bittersweet welcoming new members to the list,
FeLV is such a devastating disease...but you won't find a more
knowledgable, more caring group of people!! :) I'm also in the
Houston area (Seabrook, to be exact), so if there's anything you need,
please don't hesitate to get ahold of me!!

I wouldn't beat yourself up at all over what has happened...given that
it's actually quite difficult for a healthy, adult cat to contract the
virus (even if he or she has not been vaccinated--and I believe your
guys are still covered from their vaccination a few years ago...new
research indicates that vaccines are effective way beyond their
seemingly arbitrary 1 year expiration date)...and the fact that
kittens are the most susceptible to the virus because of their
immature immune systems...it's my hunch that Kuma and your little girl
actually had the virus all along (the virus can remain sequestered in
the bone marrow causing a false negative on an in-house test...this
happened to one of our girls). The more likely scenerio is that Kuma
passed the virus on to the little orange guy whose immune system
wasn't up to fighting off the virus.

As for what to do now, you will get alot of advice about treating
diarrhea from the list! I would start by making sure everyone is
getting a good, quality diet (human-grade ingredients with meat being
listed as the first ingredient)! Some good brands are Wellness,
Innova, Eagle Pack...Also, try starting him out on L-lysine (you can
find tablets at your local grocery store)...just crush up a 500 mg
tablet and mix into canned food twice a day. Another medication that
you might want to try is Interferon...it helps boost the immune
system...if your vet won't get it for you, let me know and I'll get
some from my vet and get it to you!!

That's all I can think of for now...this is a wonderful list, you'll
get alot of great advice, so don't be afraid to ask about anything at
all! And like I said, please let me know if you need anything at all!

Jen

Subject: Introduction

 Hello everyone,
 I am new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and tell about
 why I am
 here. I appreciate you taking a minute to read about us.

 My name is Sandy and until recently I've had 3 adult cats who I
 love like
 fuzzy children. I have a stepdaughter who moved home this summer
 for a few
 weeks, and brought with her an orange kitten she had adopted from
 someoneshe didn't know. She got him to keep her older cat Kuma
 (Japanese for
 Bear) compnay. After they got here, her cat Kuma became very
 ill, and
 within just a day or so of showing symptoms, had to be euthanized. He
 experienced multi-organ failure. The vet diagnosed FeLV.

 So we took the orange kitten Cotton to the vet as soon as we
 could, since we
 knew so little about him. Cotton also tested positive for FeLV. My
 stepdaughter has neither the desire nor the means to care for him,
 so she
 left him. The vet recommended immediate euthanasia, and wouldn't
 even check
 his little orange ears for ear mites or intestinal parasites or
 suggest any
 more blood work. Just FeLV positive = death. That was hard to
 swallow, but
 in the meantime, I gathered up my three established cats to be
 tested, and
 unfortunately my younger female has also tested positive. The
 other two
 older cats were negative.

 I am heartbroken and distraught. I've tried to read and learn as
 much as I
 can about FeLV. I have been angry at myself for letting this all
 happen,and feel now that hindsight is always 20-20. But please
 don't make me feel
 any worse than I do. It had been about 2 years since my cats had
 the FeLV
 vaccine, becuase they are 100% indoors, and I was worried about
 overvaccinating them.

 Now I feel that I need to look ahead and address this head-on, and
 I am
 hoping for some sound, rational advice. My vet seemed totally
 negative and
 I do intend to get a second opinion and confirmatory blood tests.
 The two
 cats that are negative got a vaccine, even though I know it may
 not do much
 good. They also have boosters scheduled in 3 weeks.

 I fear that even though Kuma (stepduaghter's cat who died) was
 sequesteredduring his illness, everyone was exposed before we
 realized what we were
 dealing with. I now have a household of 4 cats, two of whom are FeLV

Re: anesthesia question-atropine's interesting history!

2005-10-25 Thread jenmeyer
I've heard of atropine, but wasn't sure what it was for...did a quick
Google check, but couldn't quite deciper the medical-speak! :)
Sounds like it's a kind of pain killer, though...and I found this tid-
bit kinda interesting:

Atropine extracts from the Egyptian henbane were used by Cleopatra in
the last century B.C. to dilate her pupils, in the hope that she would
appear more alluring. In the Renaissance, women used the juice of the
berries of Atropa belladonna to enlarge the pupils of their eyes, for
cosmetic reasons; 'belladonna' is Italian for 'beautiful lady'.

 Yes, she did have a pain killer shot. Maybe that was it. She got
 atropine,
 which is what they said dilated her eyes-- is that the pain killer
 or
 something else?

Thanks, Julie!

I'm still having crazy dreams about running out of gas (and I still find

I think the guy who contacted me (James) is looking into importing
Virbagen to try to help his fur-baby (Lea)...he found the email (Google)
that I had posted to the group as far as writing a letter to the FDA
asking for permission to import...I told him if there is anyway his vet
can work out something with my vet, I've got the approval letter...it
just needs to be ordered! I've had to put off buying it as all
available funds are going towards Ewok's chemo...it took nearly a *year*
for my vet to finally get approval, I didn't want James to have to wait
that long, especially if Lea only has a few months! :(

I'll be sure to pass along your email...he and his wife are super-sweet
and very heart-broken by the diagnosis...they're willing to try anything!

 Dear Jen,

 So happy you are all safe and sound! I have about caught up in my
 email to the description of your evacuation ordeal; my goodness!

 You might direct this gentleman to Dr. Addie's website:

 http://www.dr-addie.com/

 She has a protocol on there for treatment with human interferon;
 obviously a better chance would be Virbagen Omega, but an FIP kitty
 doesn't have time to wait for it (unless he happens to be located
 where it is available). I believe more and more that there is no
 single answer to some of these horrible viruses, but rather a
 combination of therapy. I did start Tater Tot on the human
 interferon protocol because it was all that was available. She
 recommends other supplements, too. I couldn't use them all because
 he would not eat the food with them added and he just gagged
 terribly if I tried to syringe them in. He was never cooperative
 about meds, anyway, but if this kitten is, many people have found
 them to help (cod liver oil, Vitamin C, etc.).

 FIP is the worst kind of a nightmare. I hope the kitten has been
 misdiagnosed; it does happen!

 So happy you and yours are safe!

Subject: anesthesia question

 Lucy had her surgery at about 12:30 today and came home at 2.
 Since that
 time (4 hours now), she has been wandering around in the room I
 have her shut in,
 staring eagerly at the walls and behind the furniture in a hyper-
 alert state,
 as if the walls were teeming with mice. She will let me pet her
 for a second
 or two but then resumes her wall hunting. I called the vet a few
 hours ago
 and they said the anesthesia is probably making her delirious, and
 that it could
 last a few hours. I just tried calling them again but they are
 closed for the
 night. Her eyes are also very dilated. Has anyone ever seen this
 kind of
 reaction to anesthesia? I have seen many animals undergo surgery
 and have never
 witnessed something like this. She does not seem to be in distress
 particularly... if her eyes were not dilated and she had not just
 had surgery, and if the
 other cats were not ignoring her behavior, I might think she was
 eagerly
 listening to mice or something. But she seems totally insane.
 Any info you can
 provide on this would be helpful. I will do some internet research
 too.
 They had said she could drink at 4 and then eat, but I have been
 afraid to
 feed her while she looks so strange.

 Thanks,
 Michelle

 I am shocked they would even test at 3 weeks old to be honest.
 Especiallywith FIV kittens can test false positive for upto a year
 so need testing
 after 12 months and even if they are positive for FeLV or FIV it
 is no
 reason to euthanase. Not sure if teh same time scale applies to
 FeLV but
 I'm

 I do know that the tests for FIV detect anibodies and not the
 virus - the
 kittens automatically get the antibodies from their mother but not
 necessarily the virus. So like I said tehy could test positive for
 a long
 time even though they may not have the virus. Time is usually
 around 6
 months before they test negative but I've known cats to have false
 positives
 for 12months and even upto 2 years so if they tested positive on

 is every chance they may be negative.

He'd sit up and start the kinda (sorry for the gross description)
sneezy-hocking thing...it would go on for several seconds and he'd
finish with kind of a dry-heave...my biggest concern, however, was
that his breathing was a little labored when he was at rest and, most
noticably, he was sleeping/hanging out in places he usually doesn't hang
out at, ie. hidey-holes (when cats don't feel well, they'll often seek
out hiding spots). How is your kitty acting otherwise?

I couldn't agree with you more on the spider issue!! I've also got an
irrational fear of them...I wanted to visit Australia at one
point...until my boss (an Australian) told me about the size of the
spiders they've got over there...that killed any plans to vacation in
Australia any time soon...And I can't bring myself to step on them
anymore after I killed a black widow spider here at the office. Ironic,
yes, but I felt so bad for days after doing the deed...there is a great
story my dad told me about his dad...back when my dad was a kid, his dad
discovered a black widow in the back yard...instead of disposing of
it, he set up a stool next to the web and grabbed a notebook to study
its movements...he probably watched that spider for hours on end
absolutely fascinated by it! One day, the spider was gone and my
grandfather immediately went to my dad thinking that he had done
something to it (my grandfather was *so* upset! Dad hadn't gone near
the spider, however)! Anyway, after hearing that story, my guilt was
only compounded...

Anyhoo, I'd like to add fire ants to the list of Why? :)

I think it might just depend on the cat! I've heard that all cats have
the instinct to catch prey...but they need to learn from their mothers
what do do with the prey once they catch it (ie. kill)...whether that's
true or not, I don't know...our boys (who were born with silver spoons
in their mouths, so-to-speak) are interested in the chase for all of a
few minutes before they get bored. Our two girls, on the other hand,
who roughed it in the great outdoors when they were younger, are
nick-named The Destructors as they aren't satisified until a cockroach
is completely dismembered! :) Therefore, if I see a cockroach indoors,
I've learned to go for one of the girls as the boys just aren't all that
interested!

I've got the reverse problem...the cockroaches (palmetto bugs, I
think...that does sound better than cockroaches) mostly take up
residence in our garage, which is fine with me as it *isn't* in the
house...however, we have a cat door in the door that connects the garage
and house (why the garage is so fascinating, I don't know, but we were
losing alot of air-conditioning by constantly having to open the door so
the cats could investigate the garage, hence the cat door)...anyhoo,
Lola and Mags will catch the cockroaches in the garage...AND THEN
proceed to bring them into the house via the cat door to play with
them! For some reason, the floor beneath the legs of the kitchen table
and chairs is the perfect spot to let a roach go...guess it's fun to
actually let the roach think it has a chance by letting it hide behind a
leg...

entire
 way! We literally could only sleep for an hour or so Friday night
(we
 were still in Texas at this point with no room at any hotel or
shelter
 until we got into Arkansas) because as the hurricane approached, it
 brought tornados. But we finally made it to Arkansas early Saturday
 with animals in tow...Everyone did great despite having to be
confined
 to a car for two days! Little Rock was wonderful, everyone was very
 kind and helpful...we even managed to make it to the river front area
 the day before we returned to Texas for a much needed beer (or
 two) at
 an English pub called The Underground. :)

 Anyhoo, unfortunately, I had to take Ewok to his oncologist
 appointmentthis morning...more car trauma!! The poor guy, just
 got out of the damn
 car and here I am sticking him back in it for a half-hour car ride to
 his doctor's appointment! We're all very much looking forward to
this
 weekend! We dodged a bullet and only lost a few tree limbs in the
 storm(only 1/4 of rain!!)...it's sad to think that we would have
 been safer
 staying in our own home during the storm!!

 Hope this all makes sense! My brain is still all over the place (I'm
 absolutely exhausted)...thank you all for your positive thoughts...I
 have yet to read though the list email, but I know there have been a
 couple of losses (Julie and Nina??)...I believe I saw something about

Hi Susan!

I have heard from Gloria and I'll tell you the same thing I told her...I
feel extremely fortunate that I've got such a wonderful network of
friends all over the country! Thank you so much for the support! As of
now, we have reservations at the Motel 6 off of Hwy. 30 in Little
Rock...we will probably leave here early tomorrow morning and (fingers
crossed that our house is spared serious damage) head back to Houston on
Monday. Although, we may leave sooner depending on the evacuation
orders...right now it's voluntary, but that is quickly going to
change...we're in a low lying area by the Bay of Galveston (elevation
only 16 ft.) and they're predicting a storm surge close to 20 ft.!

I'm happy we've got a place to stay (and wonderful offers) for the time
being...but I'll be honest, I'm scared to death that we're going to lose
our home! I don't know if our flood insurance company will take pity on
us as we only signed up for insurance about 2 weeks ago (usually doesn't
take effect for a month). Please keep our humble little home in your
thoughts!!  :)

And here is my cell phone #, as well: 281-229-1279...it's such a relief
to know that other Feleuk parents are nearby in case of an emergency!!
Thank you so much, again...

 I know that the Airport Holiday Inn in Little Rock will allow pets -
 there was a tv spot talking to the manager saying they had dogs,
 cats and birds - and maybe something else. They showed bags of
 donated food they had for the animals. At the airport there is a
 Holiday Inn and a Holiday Inn Express - and this was the regular
 one. I am working with a Gulfport couple who is staying at the
 Residence Inn in Little Rock - and they have their cat there. If
 you come through Little Rock and need a place for the cats I know
 we can help. Plus we know a groomer who will board free and Gloria
 uses a boarding facility that will help out. Or the dogs could
 either stay with me or with Gloria overnight, I'm sure. Y'all just
 come on. You can reach me at 501-416-7547 and Gloria at 501-666-

Thanks, Chris! That is my thinking as well...if we have no other
option, we sneak and hope that everyone remains on their best behavior!

 Here are a couple of links that might help...

 http://www.pets-allowed-hotels.com/us/Arkansas/

 http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/guides/us/usstateAR.shtml

 http://www.petfriendlytravel.com/?page=find_listingsstate=AR

 Got these thru Google search on pet friendly hotels + Arkansas

 I also know there is one large chain that changed its policy to
 allow pets
 when the CEO of the company tried to check in at one of the upscale
 hotelsin the chain with his dog they refused him... I can't
 remember which
 chain it is...

 However, just a suggestion... if you can find one of those one
 floor places
 where you pull up to the door, just tell them you have one dog
 bring the
 troop in when no one is looking.

 My parents have criss-crossed the country several times with a dog
  had all
 sorts of experiences. They were traveling late one night in the
 winter,found a motel who told them the dog would have to stay in
 the car for the
 night. My mother took the key as she walked to the room, told
 them they
 better call the police as the dog was most definitely not staying
 in the
 car! Other times when they weren't sure, they just didn't tell
 anyone about
 the dog snuck him in. Like yourself, they weren't sightseing so
 they were
 always in the room with him to make sure he didn't make too much
 noiseOne of their dogs seem to instinstively know when she was
 being 'snuck' in
 as friendly as she was, she would be very quiet when my father
 would walk
 her stay quietly with him when he was ducking out of view

 Here's hoping that you don't have to evacuate or that if you do, it
 will go
 OK...

Thanks, Kerry...I think I'm still in a bit of denial...I'm originally
from the Chicago-land area where the worst thing we had to worry about,
nature-wise, was losing an extremity or two in the bitter cold! ;) The
whole scenerio of your house being under water is just too much for me
to fathom, right now! Whereabouts in England are you from? I had the
good fortune of visiting London for a short time several years ago and
loved every minute...if we lose the house in the storm, we're moving to

Thanks for the well-wishes! All the best!

How do Sebastian's gums look? Are they pale? How's his breathing?
He could be fighting anemia...but I'm guessing the vets would have
tested for that when they saw him last...are they leaning towards
something neurological? It may help your piece of mind knowing what
is going on with him...it sounds like Sebastian has enough strength
for both of you...let that guide you so that you can get to the bottom
of his illness. I know it's easier to kind of float about in denial
out of fear of losing a loved one (I've done it several times myself),
and while you can't control when a loved one will depart, you can take
control over treatment...and with that control there's piece of mind
and a sense of purpose that will over-shadow your fear...You guys are
in my thoughts!!

I have not written for so long because I feel that I have given up hope. Sebastian has not been doing very well. He can no longer walk and he relies on me to take him to the litter box and to feed him. He still has a good appetite. He seems so depressed now. I am so heart broken that I cry almost daily. I am not strong enough to let him go. I feel that it isn't up to me to play god and that he will go when he is ready. He just keeps fighting. He is so much braver than me. I took him to the Virginia Tech Veterinary hospital on August 1st. They were wanting to run alot of tests. The tests were very risky, so I decided against them. Now I feel that I have no choice and I have to find out what is wrong with him and see if there is something that can be done. I don't know what I will do without him. I am so scared of losing him.

Thankfully, most of the animals in those pics have their owner's with

going hotel-to-hotel, shelter-to-shelter to drop off much needed food

Thanks, Julie...I wish I could do more...I just checked out the Houston

any pets of refugees staying in Houston and the Humane Society is
offering a free clinic through the holiday weekend where staff will

This is a good way to administer Nutrical, if it hasn't been suggested
already! It's a high-calorie gel that comes in a tube (can also be
found at Petsmart, etc.)...just put some on your finger and scrape
against the roof of kitty's mouth...I've also put some on paws so that
they're forced to lick it off...but you can't put too much as cat's have
a tendency to want to shake it off before they lick it off...I've got
splatterings of Nutrical all over the kitchen!

Hi Lisa!

Yep, it's a supplement that can be taylored for supplemental use, or for
guys that aren't eating much (if anything) at all! Like I said, it just
comes in a tube (kinda like toothpaste)...if you're able to get your
finger in kitty's mouth (as opposed to the syringe, which takes a little
getting used to, I admit), then this may be the way to go! Good luck!

Re: Won't Eat....Please Help

2005-08-30 Thread jenmeyer
Hi Lisa!

Have you tried giving him a little l-lysine? If he's having a problem
smelling his food (one reason that he may not want to eat), then lysine
might help clear up anything sinus-wise (and maybe even eye-wise) so
that he can smell his food again!

That said, you may want to try anything smelly...tuna, salmon, etc...if
all else fails, and he doesn't object too much, you can always try
syringe feeding him...you can pick up a large syringe at most pet stores
(Petsmart, Petco)...the easiest thing to syringe, canned food-wise, is
Hill's A/D (which can only be found at a vet's office)...or, chicken or
turkey baby food is always a good one...just make sure it doesn't have
any onion in the ingredients...Beechnut, apparently, makes a pure
chicken baby food...but I don't have that available around here, so I
use Gerber...I believe the label says Chicken with chicken gravy ie.
there is corn starch added...

Good luck and keep us updated! I hope he can find a little relief soon!

Subject: Won't EatPlease Help

 Hi everyone,

 Has anyone got any ideas on how to get some food into my kitty?

 He has had FELV since 03. He was a very sick kitty and we were a
 breath away
 from having to put him to sleep. We wanted to try and give him a
 chance,
 even though our Vet and the Ophthalmologist that was treating
 kitty's eyes
 were against it. He was on Prednisone 5mg a day for about 6
 months, he
 began looking and acting healthier. then his meds were changed to
 half a
 pill each day, and then finally a half a pill every other day.

 August of 04 he was taken off of all meds, and became a healthy
 chubby cat.
 ( 16 lbs) He has been wonderful till Friday of last week. Then
 over this
 weekend his eyes clouded over (Uveitis returned) and he is not
 eating a
 thing. I have tried everything, even his favorite snack, and no way.

 We went to the Vet yesterday (Monday), and guess what, the Dr. who
 has
 worked with us is on holiday. What a mess. The one that we saw
 was a bit
 of a fruit cake. She tried to draw blood and had such a problem, it
 took
 three tries with kitty crying, can't even tell you what I was going
 to do to
 her if hubby had not stepped in. I spoke to her about the
 prednisone.   She
 said she did not want to put him back on the prednisone at this
 time and on
 and on and on. I told her our Dr. made it quite clear to us,( it
 was down
 on his chart also ) that if we saw that he was sliding to get him
 back on
 the Prednisone. It was like talking to the wall. She gave me an
 anti-biotic for ten days for him and that was it.

 Today I called and got one of the other vets who pulled Kitty's
 chart and
 gave me a prescription for the prednisone. I will be starting it
 later.
 Tomorrow we will be taking him to his Ophthalmologist and hopefully
 she will
 be able to get his eyes back under control. Please God.

 I am quite sure at this time he is only seeing shadows, and is so
 frightened
 from every noise. I can't get him to eat. I know how important
 this is on
 a chubby cat, and how quickly they can get... Hepatic Lipidosis and
 it may
 be fatal with his immune system..

 A few moments ago I put a little food on my finger and had to force
 his
 little mouth open and I put it on the back of his tongue. He did
 swallow
 it, and is now sleeping.

 Would anyone know of any other way of doing it.

 Sorry about this winded letter, it has been a long and
 heartbreaking 5 days.

 Thank you for taking the time to read it.

 Lisa.

Thanks, Tonya! Yeah, I think there may have been something up with the
list over the weekend...hopefully the problem has been resolved! :)

Ewok, so far, is doing pretty well...he's breathing much easier so I
take that as good news that the tumor is shrinking...I'm trying not to
get my hopes up too much as the lymphomas I've dealt with in the past
have been soo aggressive... :( If he does go into remission, I fear
that it won't be for very long...anyhoo, I'm trying not to think about
that...he's feeling pretty good right now and that's all that
matters...I had no idea that I could spoil him any more that I already
had!  :)

 Please add my 19 1/2 year old Big Rik to the special needs list.
 He has been your typical grumpy old man for the last few years, but
 incredibly healthy. He has just begun to stay dehydrated enough to
 need subQ fluids and I noticed yesterday that his hind quarters are
 getting week and unsteady. He's a really fine old fella, felv

 morning. She had started having seizures and was rushed to a 24 hours
 clinic. Norrice was told there was no hope for her recovery, so she
 waseuthanized.. When she was rescued she was always thin and
 somewhat sickly,
 she has good times but often had a fever which would come and go.
 Norrice,had her to the vet, numerous times and previously they
 could not find
 anything specifically wrong. This past week though, the blood work
 showedthat Twiggy was slightly anemic, had a high white blood
 count, elevated
 liver enzyme levels, and a high globulin count. She tested negative
 for both
 feline leukemia and aids. She was always listless and since she
 never ate
 much, or gained much weight, she was named Twiggy. Twiggy came
 from a
 house with many unaltered animals (now they are all altered) and
 some kitten
 deaths (probably also from FIP). Norrice, took Twiggy, to get her

I am so sorry to hear about Cloud! Has the vet given you a definitive
diagnosis? Cats don't generally die of the Feleuk virus itself, but
rather because of diseases that take advantage of the cat's weakened
immune system...is Cloud anemic?

He's been feeling punky the last couple of weeks...to my untrained eye,
it almost seems as though he's having an allergic reaction to
something...he's scratching like mad around his face and neck (despite
the use of flea meds--Advantage). But whether or not the scratching is
related to the fact that he's now having a little trouble breathing
remains to be seen. His color is good, and I pray to whoever might be
listening that there isn't something in his chest cavity that shouldn't
be there!!

:)  Thanks, Jenn!  I needed that pep-talk!  :)  I'm just hoping that
Ewok's tumor responds better to chemo that our Pips' did...although I
hear that chest tumors respond much more readily to chemo than
intestinal tumors (which Pips had).

And you're lucky...I had my sights set on the tequila bottle originally!

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you, homeless, to my gate
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth and food?
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny,
While she, with purr and velvet paw
Became, within my house, The Law.
She scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.
She ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day she died.
So, if you really think, oh cat
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come, forlorn and thin
Well, don't just stand there,
Come on in!

Re: Laying tile was: ot- flooring for pee club members

2005-07-16 Thread jenmeyer
You go girl! :) We laid ceramic tile in our kitchen...wasn't that hard
at all! Be sure to rent a tile cutter...makes the job a heck of alot
easier! And keep the cement-adhesive well mixed so you can spread it
easily (I used a mixer attachment specifically for mixing adhesive and
grout...it just attaches to a regular power drill)...I would mix the
adhesive every 5 minutes or so to keep the adhesive pliable...and
definitely be sure to seal the grout once it's dry (I just picked up a
sealer at Home Depot...it's worked well to prevent stains from setting
into the grout...although we also picked a dark grey grout to hide an
imperfections... :)  ).

Good luck!

2005-07-12 Thread jenmeyer
Yeah, I had heard that as well...I think there's some debate about the
issue which, I believe, comes down to how confident the surgeon is with
performing a spay on a female in heat...perhaps something to do with
blood vessels (associated with the uterus/ovaries) being enlarged and
the risk associated with nicking one of those vessels, or something to
that effect...I'm not entirely sure. But Lola was certainly in heat,
and I even mentioned this to the vet the day of the surgery having heard
that a cat in heat shouldn't be spayed...but my vet didn't even bat an
eye...and Lola came through with flying colors! :)

Hee, hee! I've even gone to the extent of removing all of the carpet in
the house and replacing with ceramic tile/laminate wood flooring (I
highly recommend the Armstrong's edition made exclusively for

pick up at Walmart for $30 (they don't seem to be as comfortable to pee

You BOUGHT a $450 area
rug?!!!??? (Oo)

You must not be as much of a crazy cat lady as
some of the rest of us. We don't even have cheap $6 bath mats on the floor. I
have one, but I keep it thrown up over the shower bar, and only use it during
showers, as soon as I am dry, I pick it up and throw it back up out of "cat pee
reach". I forgot to put it up yesterday, and now I have to wash it today, it's
in the "cat pee" hamper now.

I wouldn't suggest replacing the rug it will
just be ruined again.Rugs are areal waste of money if you have
cats.

I have a "rug" at the door entrance. It's
a2 foot long cut section of heavy-dutyrubber backed high traffic
carpet runner (the industrial stuff you see at businesses in the aisles). If
they pee on it, the pee stays on it, and doesn't soak through to the carpet
under it. I take it to the car wash down the road, pour a gallon of undiluted
vinegar on it, let it soak for 5 minutes, and then spray it with the high
pressure car soap (it's hot), then rinse it with the high pressure rinse. I got
it at a reducedprice at the hardware store, because it was a remnant, cost
me $12 ($6 a foot).
Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html

~~~yeah,
I used quite a bit, they seem to hit two corners only, regretfully they ruined a
$450 area rug by the front door, that will now need to be replaced
 Hello: I posyed this message last month but I haven't received a
 singleresponse.  I would greatly appreciate a response.  Thanks -
 Terri (The
 June e-mail is pasted below)
 I just posted this message on the other fiv-cat yahoo site, so I'm
 re-posting it here to increase Domino's chances for a safe and happy
 placement:
 I have MS and now Domino has had 2 Western blots (the 2d was just
 done at Cornell),both with FIV+ results. Domino has been a strictly
 indoor cat, has a dog companion (our Golden), my kids and us. She
 only eats Nutro dry food, which is probably why her teeth and gums
 are in such good shape.
 I have read with interest various postings re: what dangers are
 posed to
 people with Lupus, HIV+ etc., when they have FIV+ cats. The bottom
 lineis that for those of us who are immune-compromised, there are no
 definitive answers about our risks with FIV+ cats. Clearly there is a
 risk of spreading bacteria between people and cats; cat scratch
 diseaseis also transmitted to humans. Unless you are immune
 compromsed, no one
 really can tell the those of us who are, whether it's worth the
 risk to
 keep an FIV+ cat around or not, or whether there's a risk at all.
 It's a
 complete gamble.
 I previously posted on the FIVCAT board that I am not willing to take
 the gamble, not with my health. Too many doctors have been wrong about
 my disease, its progression, the drugs I've taken for MS  their side
 effects. I can't take the word of fellow kitty-lovers
 about FIV+ if my own human docs, the two vets I've seen  the Cornell
 Feline Health Clinic have question marks about this. So yes, I have
 decided that I needed to place Domino elsewhere for both our sakes.
 I contacted the rescue group where we got Domino. They connected me
 to a lady nearby, in Westchester County, NY where I live. She has 17
 FIV+ cats. Eight are upstairs with a dominant female, 9 are
 downstairs in runs or cages because they either spray or are too
 timid to use their litter boxes (at least acc to the lady). She
 feeds them all a little wet food to keep them hydrated (what
 happened to water?), which we all know increases tarter and plaque,
 as well as dry food. She has told me that many of her cats have had
 their teeth pulled, and that some are completely toothless. She also
 told me that she has litter boxes all over the house, that some cats
 sleep on her bed, on pillows or elsewhere, and that she keeps
 mountains of amoxicillin around. She also has two small dogs plus a
 German Shepherd. She became angry when I asked if I could inspect
 the premises, telling me that I was being insulting to her, and she
 said that the only thing I could see or do at her house (which I
 can't, since her house isn't accessible) would be to put Domino in
 what she described as a large dog-sized cage in the kitchen to say
Absolutely, Erika!  I'd love to send one for each cat!
This list is so wonderfully modest... :)  I need to let everyone know
that these medals aren't *just* for people!  :)  If you've got cats or
dogs with collars, they'd fit right on there!  I've even put one on each
of the urns that hold the ashes of our cats who have passed
on...Seriously, I got these medals for pennies on the dollar...they're
not huge or ornate or anything...they're simple and
lightweight...perfect for collars or to put on chains for people!  :)
The next batch will actually be compliments of my Dad's church as he
says, The people on this list are what St. Francis (and my church) is
all about!
So, everyone, please, please, please let me know if you'd like more than
just a few!!  They're quite adorable on collars, as well!  :)
Also, I haven't heard from Jenn who has been coordinating part of the
rescue effort at Angel Wings...does anyone have any info?  Thanks!
And I'm working on transcribing the prayer...I may have to give my Dad a
call as I've run into a problem reading his handwriting... :)  He could
have been a physician...
Subject: Please add Flavia to CLS Belinda
 Dear all
 My sweet, gorgeous little girl Flavia is gone.
 It all happened so quickly. When I went in to check on her at
 9.30am (she
 had seemed fine at 6am and later), she was hiding in the carrier,
 and seemed
 to be breathing more rapidly than the others. I also noticed than
 someonehad vomited--a first, if my memory serves me right, since
 they all arrived
 in December 2003. I figured it was probably Flavia. Someone else
 has also
 been urinating a little over the past few days out of the box--
 again, a
 first. I thought it was probably Flavia.
 So, seeing her fast breathing, I panicked, and took her immediately
 to the
 vet I saw yesterday, Dr Teuber, and she confirmed that her
 respiratory rate
 had increased since yesterday. We ran a PCV, and it had plummeted
 to 10,
 from 16 1/2 at 4pm yesterday.
 I actually think Flavia was ready. She didn't want to play at all
 last night
 (she hasn't been able to play the way she used to--leaping in the
 air to
 catch the bug--for a few weeks, presumably because she hasn't had
 theenergy). Her quality of life was going downhill. It's a pity we
 didn't get a
 chance to use the IR, which I had had fedexed to 2 clinics. (Her IR
 wouldhave probably begun later this week--I had the housecall vet
 set up, and
 just had to set a schedule.)
 I was/am a mess, but Flavia and I had a long cuddle, which was really
 lovely, and helped a lot, for which I am very grateful. The vet was a
 wonderful woman, who I only met yesterday (Dr Teuber at Higgins,
 Belinda--do
 tell your Chicago friend.). Looks like I may not have terminated my
 relationship with Higgins after all...
 I am grateful that Flavia gave me the signs today, while I was
 still here
 and able to help her.act on it immediately. The thought of her
 fighting for
 breath for hours, or suffering in any way, while I was gone, and no
 one here
 apart from the petsitter 30 mins a day, was not something I could
 accept. (I
 did not want to hospitalize her.)
 I'm going to miss her terribly. I loved that little soul. I've been
 a bit of
 a mess over the thought of losing her for the last 2 weeks, and
 shed more
 tears than I thought humanly possible. She was a tabby, very feminine,
 elfin-faced, with streaks of auburn and coffee and cream on her
 undersideand a long, beautiful, elegant tail. Last night I stroked
 her with a feather
 for a long time and she really enjoyed it--stretching luxuriously.
 And, of
 course, she became much more willing to be stroked and held over
 the past
 few days.
 Thanks to everyone for their prayers and good wishes. If I'm not in
 touchagain today, I send lots of healing vibes for all the sick
 kitties, and I'll
 be in touch again the weekend of the 23rd.
 Goodbye, my gorgeous Flavia.
 Kerry
  There is no point (and much risk) in vaccinating an immune-
Hi All!
Hope ya'll had a wonderful 4th of July weekend!  I haven't been able to
keep up with my Inbox for the past few weeks...but I want to send my
best to all of our beautiful fur-babies...
My Dad was down this past weekend!  He just couldn't say enough
wonderful things about the amazing group of people on this list... :)
He kept telling me, If you need any more medals, just let me know and
I'll send them to you!  I've got plenty of medals here, and I know a
few of you guys expressed an interest in wishing to give medals to
friends/family/other rescuers (which, of course, is so NOT a
problem!)...so the invitation goes out to everyone...if you'd like more
than one medal, just let me know!  I've got a file with everyone's
addresses, so I'll get them out this week!
I'll also include the prayer that my Dad used to bless the medals...it's
really sweet because he mostly thought it up himself especially for this
group...then, of course, he told me, Now, if you need anymore medals,
please let me know!  :)
Take care, All!
of the FeLV cats that came out of that shelter...I can't even put into
words how I feel right now...angry/sad/helpless just doesn't even start
to cut it...but I had thought of sending medals as well, and I feel so
dumb for hesitating to offer for fear that someone might be offended by
what could be perceived as a religious symbol...you guys have reminded
me over and over again that St. Francis trancends faith!  :)  Thanks,
Kat, for speaking up and reminding me, again, what an awesome group of
people this is!  I would love to send on as many medals as the Rescuers
would need...I just need an address and an approximate number of medals
that would be needed...I would also like to make note on the prayer that
the medals are a gift from our entire group, if that's okay with you guys!
 Hi Jen,
 Would it be possible to send some of the medals down to the
 Angel Wings Rescuers who have been working so tirelessly for
 the unfortunate animals that got caught up in all of this??
 I know it's not much to give them in return for what they've
 been doing, but I think it would be marvelous if it could be
Re: FeLV and pregnancy
2005-06-14 Thread jenmeyer
Hi Erika!
I can't stress enough that FeLV is *not* transmissable to humans
(pregnant or not)!!
I believe what the Cornell site is trying to do is to inform pregnant
women of the *rare* threat of toxoplasmosis (a parasite that *can* be
transmitted to humans unlike FeLV which is species specific)...and
because FeLV cats are immuno-suppressed, they could be more suceptible
to toxoplasmosis...but, again, we've got to use common sense
here...toxoplasmosis is mainly transmitted by contaminated meat...and
contaminated meat is generally found outdoors...as long as Tom remains
indoors, his chances of picking up toxoplasmosis are essentially nil!
And I will also take this opportunity, again, to point out the
toxoplasmosis is a fairly uncommon disease!
Unfortunately, the Cornell website is inadvertantly suggesting that FeLV
is a threat to a fetus by telling pregnant women to avoid cats with
FeLV...this is *not* the case!  Toxoplasmosis is the only parasite (or
disease, aside from rabies), that I know of, that can be transmitted to
humans.  It is highly unlikely that Tom even carries this parasite, but
common sense measures should be taken when handling the litter box (the
parasite is shed in the feces of infected cats)...always wash your hands
after cleaning the box (wear gloves for even more protection!)...or,
better yet, have another member of the household clean the box while
you're pregnant!  Personally, I would welcome 9 litterbox-free months!  :)
Hope this helps clarify!
Anyone know about Cat Tail Farms in MI? Little boy needs a home!
2005-05-25 Thread jenmeyer
Hi All!
I just had a wonderful conversation with a woman who got my name from my
(cat) oncologist in downtown Houston (I haven't been there in over a
year, but apparently they remembered that I took care of a few cats with
FeLV!)...the woman I spoke with, Carol, just took in a sweet little
white and grey baby boy who has tested positive for FeLV...Carol is
devastated but would have been willing to give him a good home if she
didn't have a few dogs who don't get along very well with cats... :(
Right now, Teddy (the little cat), is being fostered by a friend of
hers, but he is scheduled to be transported to a sanctuary in Micigan
called Cat Tail Farms.  So my first question is:  does anyone know
anything about or have any personal experience with this rescue?
Carol is so attached to this little guy, and it kills me that I can't
take him in...naturally, she'd like to see him go to a good home rather
than a sanctuary...but she wants to be sure that he goes to a home where
he will be well taken care of!  :)
Teddy sounds like an absolute little baby doll...he's no more that a few
years old and was apparently abandoned.  It sounds like he had a rough
start...the neighborhood cats were beating him up regularly (which is
probably how he came into contact with the virus in the first place) and
he was just skin and bones!  Carol took him in and got him neutered and
treated for an abcess in his neck...he's been de-fleaed, de-wormed and
is living like a little king with a soft, warm bed, good food and all of
the toys he can play with until his trip to MI in June.  He's all white
except for a grey spot on his head and grey/tabby tail with beautiful
yellow eyes.  This guy is really something special...not only did he
find a kind and caring person in Carol, but he's really impressed the
vets with his sweet demeanor and good health!
If anyone can help or has any info on the sanctuary, please let me know!
 For her own piece of mind, Carol needs to know that he is in good
hands...and I can't think of a more caring or knowledgable group of
people than you guys!!
Thanks!
Jen
 I had no idea crows were so sharp
Oh, sure!  They aren't considered a nuisance to some people for
nothin'!  They're clever little guys!  ;)  When I first met Bozo, he
sized me up for quite some time...he'd just stand on the ground about 2
or 3 feet in front of me and literally look me up and down with those
wonderfully intelligent eyes!  It wasn't until some time during my
second visit that he decided I was okay...I was able to feed him,
scratch his head and even walk around with him on my arm...I can vividly
remember every detail of him down to his shiney, black, scaly legs!  :)
 My Grandma loved to tease him...she'd roll him over on his back and
tickle his stomach and he'd flap his wings and wave his feet
around...he'd get miffed because his feathers were ruffled so my Grandma
would then have to fill up the bird-bath (which was obviously intended
for birds much, much smaller than Bozo, but he didn't care) so he could
bathe as only crows can (let's just say there wasn't much water left in
the bath once he was finished)!
He was a cool guy!  :)
 unfortunately stitch did not respond to the CCNU. it has been a
 little over 27 hours and he continues to worsen. the vet attempted
 to remove the fluid from his lungs again to help him
 breath...unfortunately for us the mass is solid and he has no fluid
 to remove. his breathing is so bad he has to mouth breath to get
 any air...i was think of bringing him back home for one more night
 for my own selfish reasons. after rethinking this i most likely
 will not. he has been in a nasty fight for a very long time...and
 now its time for him to rest. We did everything we could and and
 still lymphoma wins another battle. maybe someday people and
 animals alike will benefit from new technology and treatments.
Re: Ginger--pain killers?
2005-05-13 Thread jenmeyer
Sorry, I'm so behind on posts...so this topic may have already been
discussed...but what kind of pain killers is Ginger on?  My Pips had a
similar tooth extraction and the vet gave me an injectable pain killer
(I think that I only gave it to him once a day, right between the
shoulder blades) that went to work immediately (and very effectively by
the look on his face!)...and it did wonders for his appetite...I imagine
Ginger's mouth is extremely sore and probably now associates a plate of
food with a large amount of pain...I know you want to limit the number
of drugs Ginger is receiving, but a stronger pain killer may dull the
pain enough to encourage eating!  Just a thought...you guys are
certainly in my thoughts!
 I did give her the sulphur, which I have in the house, in the
 manner that
 you suggested.  I do agree on some level about not giving many
 drugs, which  is
 why I did not give her the pain killer this morning.  The reason I
 am
 thinking about the I-R is that the article on the
 felineleukemia.org website
 actually says that it gets positve cats who have stopped eating to
 eat again in  50%
 of the cases at the author vet's clinic.  I don't know if he is
 telling  the
 truth or not, but if it could get her to eat that would be
 wonderful.   It is
 not supposed to have side effects.  Well, actually I think I read
 somewhere
 that it could, but the vet who wrote the article said he has
 treated  700 cats
 with it and has never seen any side effects, and people on this
 list  have used
 it and have never seen any side effects.  So I thought maybe this
 one thing
 is worth trying.  Do you think that is a bad idea? I am still  open
 to not
 doing it.  I am hoping the dox will make her URI better in a  day
 or two and then
 I will stop the antibiotics.  The only other med she is  on besides
 the dox
 is pepcid to try to counteract any nausea the dox might  cause.
2005-04-12 Thread jenmeyer
Hi Mike--
I've only caught bits and pieces of this thread...but judging by the symptoms
that you've listed, it sounds like your little guy has lymphoma (FeLV+ cats are
notoriously prone to cancer)...and seeing that it's in his chest, you'll need
to act quickly (fluid can quickly build up in his chest cavity).  Essentially,
what you can do at this point to buy him a little more time is start him on
chemotherapy (lymphomas usually respond very well to chemo) and prednisone (a
steroid that will help shrink the tumor).  Michelle is our resident expert on
lymphoma (her cat, Simon, rebounded fantastically with aggressive treatment)!
Please, do get him started as soon as you can!!  If all goes well, you may want
to start him on coenzyme Q10 (30 mg per day)...it does wonders for the heart!!
You guys are in my thoughts...please keep us posted!
far and that you two will see each other again someday...oh, I'm crying
Subject: Loki is at rest
 My last little love is gone.  I had to put him to sleep late
 yesterday.
 For the past two weeks, my every waking moment and thought has
 been for and
 about Loki. I did put him on Prednisone a week ago and it initial
 seemed to
 help, but very quickly it was as before.  I then called the vet
 and we
 doubled his dosage.  Once again, it initially seemed to help--
 though he
 seemed drugged this time--then quickly faded to his former
 uncomfortablestate.  At no time, did the Pred noticeably shrink
 the large tumor impeding
 his little lungs.
 I had been letting him outside to wander in the tall spring grass
 (weeds)all around the house.  He loved it and it was a great
 distraction and
 wonderful sensory stimulation for him.  If Loki did not have these
 wonderfuldays, I may have PTS sooner, as the nights were
 uncomfortable for him--he
 could no longer lay on his side and his lungs were pumping hard
 all the
 time.
 Yesterday, too many changes took place: He was not enjoying the
 out-of-doors
 like he had been, I did not see him drink water or eat his dry
 food, he
 didn't want to bend down to eat his chicken baby food treat (had
 to hold it
 up for him), and for the first time, he had a slightly open mouth.
 At most
 other times during the day, he was lying or sitting with labored
 breathingand looking very tired.  I felt it was the right time to
 stop subjecting
 Loki's system to new measures, so I made the agonizing decision.
 My 10 month, 10 day old Loki went peacefully and quickly and is
 now buried
 next to his sister under their oak tree.
 My beautiful brown/dark gray tiger kitty had a special
 personality, quite
 different, but just as wonderful as his orange tabby sister
 Leeloo.  Both
 were chosen from the litter my sister and nieces were raising
 because their
 stars seemed to burn very bright.  These kittens--the smallest of the
 litter--had unusually beautiful little souls.  Loki also had a
 smell, as his
 sister did; not the perfume my girl kitty Leeloo had, but the
 smoky earthy
 scent of a boy kitty.  Perhaps like air smells during the first
 rain on dry
 soil.  One could say his scent tended a tiny bit toward chocolate
 and even
 cinnamon, like one lister noticed of her boy kitty.  I will miss
 him jumping
 up to lay at the back of my neck and bending around to rub his
 face against
 mine, purring all the while; coming to lay on his pillow at the
 side of my
 computer to be near me; and turning over to rub his back on the
 floor and to
 get his belly rubbed.
 I will be morning his loss for a long time... I can't see a time
 when I will
 stop.  I know my pain will ease eventually and I know there will
 soon be a
 time that I will no longer be exhausted from crying.  I loved my
 little Loki
 like there was no tomorrow.
Re: Find the Pit Bull--Memories!
2005-03-30 Thread jenmeyer
Wow!  That brings back memories!  I had completely forgotten about the dog that
lived adjacent to our back yard when I was a kid!  He was a big yellow dog
(probably a lab mix) named Gilda, or something like that...we were always
warned to stay clear of him, and, for the most part, his owner's kept him
chained up in the yard...but one day, he was running loose through the yards
that were joined in the back (nobody had fencing)...I was in the backyard (I
was probably 6 or 7 at the time) and I remember he started approaching me (and
had the sense that he wasn't looking for a good scritch)...I was scared out of
my wits and picked up a stick that was lying on the ground...not the wisest
decision on my part, but I wasn't about to turn and run (last thing I wanted to
do was take my eyes off of him)!  So there we were, dog and kid not willing to
concede...THANK GOD my dad saw me and came running out!!  Ever since then, I've
always been a little leary of yellow labs...wow, I can't bel
ieve I forgot all about that incident!  :)
Okay, I'll get off this subject now...thanks, everyone, for putting up with my
rantings!  :)
Subject: Re: Find the Pit Bull--problems w/ legislating
 Hi Kyle,
I wasn't offended, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I
 feel bad
 for anyone that gets attacked by a dog pitbull or other.  When I
 was 5
 years old walking home from school I had to walk by this house
 that had
 a dalmation in the yard.  The yard was fenced and the other kids
 would
 tease this dog mercilessly when they walked by.  Most of the time
 he was
 chained also.  But one day as I was walking by he got up and
 jumped the
 fence, bit me in the lip and jumped back over and laid down next
 to his
 dog house. I never teased this dog, but I did say hi to him on
 some
 occasions, he had just finally had enough and was not chained and
 I
 unfortunetly happened to be the kid walking by.  I don't blame the
 dog
 or the owners in this case, he was in his yard behind a fence, I
 blame
 the kids whose parents didn't teach them to respect animals, who
 teased
 this dog everyday.  I had to get 6 rabie shots and the dog was
 quaranteed until he was cleared.  To this day I love dogs but have
 a bit
 of a fear of dalmatians (the type of dog this was), it isn't
 something I
 can control and I would never wish harm on one, but I do get a
 slight
 panicky feeling if I see one running loose.
Re: OT: Find the Pit Bull [Interesting and Scary]
2005-03-29 Thread jenmeyer
Oh, yeah...it's a shame that the bully breeds are taking the rap for very,
very bad owners!  We have two dogs, Lucy (a pit bull mix) and Oscar (a
lab/retriever mix), both rescues...the funny thing is, they don't come any
sweeter than Lucy...I trust her completely (even around the neighbor's toddler
who absolutely adores her).  But most folks take one look at her and assume
that she is vicious simply by her appearance.  BUT OSCAR, the cute and cuddly
one, the one with the adorable ears...HE'S the one we have to keep an eye on
because he doesn't want to be touched by anyone he doesn't know (who
does?)...when people ask if they can pet our dogs, it's always interesting to
see their reactions when I say, Yes, you can pet Lucy (the vicious looking
one) but not the cute and cuddly one, he could bite if he feels cornered!
Our neighbors catty-corner to us also have a true pit bull...I tell ya what,
she it the most well-behaved dog I've ever met!  She's got a quiet confidence
about her that I wish she could teach to Oscar!  :)  I just don't think
breed-based legislation is the way to go...personally, I believe that there are
no bad dogs, just very bad owners!
 Take the test and see if you can pick out the pit bull out of this
Oh, Steve...I am so, so sorry (insert as many expletives as you can think of
here to describe how you feel about this virus...I know I am...)...I remember
when you first joined this list, your 3 babies couldn't have found a better
home...You will know when it's time, and I'm sure Loki's siblings (Leeloo and,
I can't think of the other one...but I do remember thinking that they all have
fabulous names!) will be waiting to greet him!
There is a technical term for the pupil dilation-thing, but I can't think of it
at the moment...one of my guys, Ewok, has had it off and on for a few years
now, but is healthy in all other respects (knock-on-wood)...One of our other
guys, Marvin, has a pupil that is completely blown, whereas Ewok's will look
normal from time-to-time, Marvin's pupil will always be completely dilated.
Anyhoo, You and Loki are in my thoughts...take care of yourselves...this virus
really, really sucks...
Subject: Loki Update
 First off, in addition to the other nice notes, thank you Jen,
 Hideyo and
 Terri for your prayers and healing vibes... and I am so glad Thor
 is coming
 around.
 I did take Loki in to the vet.  It was difficult to get a spot, but
 eventually found a vet very near my house so as not to upset Loki
 with a
 long ride.  The initial prognosis did not look good, so I had x-
 rays taken.
 The x-rays showed that Loki's lungs were only expanding to half
 their normal
 size which means something else was taking space within the
 cavity.  In
 addition, the Trachea was pushed up to the spine, which suggests
 the cavity
 did not just have excessive fluid, but that a tumor was taking the
 space.  I
 was given lots of options, but I can't do most of them or put Loki
 throughhell.  In the end, I asked for, and will probably take the
 doctors opinion,
 which is to make him comfortable and take the weekend to say my
 goodbyes.He is living with the pronounced lung action just okay,
 but I know it is
 hard to be perfectly comfortable for him with the distressed
 breathing.  I
 don't think he has pain per se, but letting him go on too many
 more days
 like this, I think gets to the point of becoming painful.
 I hadn't mentioned it before, but Loki's left eye sometimes
 dilates much
 more than the right.  This is a sign of a viral infection, FeLV+ or
 otherwise.  Once again, not a good sign, especially with
 everything else.
 The doctor gave me some meds to try to alleviate things, for the
 short term.
 I'm giving him Furosimide, a diuretic to help with the excessive
 fluids (I
 will not subject him to the trauma of extracting the excessive
 fluid with a
 needle), and antibiotics to help with a slight, but lingering URI.
 All this
 should help his breathing a tiny bit.
 When it gets worse, or I feel the happy days with him no longer
 offsets the
 lingering lack of comfort, I will PTS.
 This has been a long hard road.  I tried, but it was difficult to
 maintaincomposure at the vets office.  I know I will crash hard
 after Loki goes.  I
 just can't stand what this disease does.
 Steve
