This will be by last post to the list. As you all
know, our sweet little orange/white tabby Pekoe (for orange pekoe tea) went to
the Bridge May 23rd. Prior to that, he had been doing very well on
Interferon Alpha and Prednisone since Jan. The two things he loved most in
his life were
Hello Group,
It's been a little over 3 weeks now since we lost our
beloved little Pekoe. I will be posting more about that at a later date
though. At the time, I emailed the SPCA shelter where we adopted both
Pekoe and Digby from, merely to let them know that Pekoe had also passed - not
Thank you all for your comments/input.Even
though Pekoe and Digby initially tested FelV neg., they both ended up

it prior to entering the shelter, or, one or both were exposed to it at

Dear Group,
It is with great sadness that I must tell you that we
had to let Pekoe go to the Bridge this morning (May 23rd). It was a
difficult decision that we struggled with this past weekend, but was the kindest
act of love that we could do for him. I will post more later in a few days
Hi All,
I took Pekoe for some follow-up blood work a couple of
weeks ago. Both his vet and I learned something that neither of us knew
before. The lab where we send the blood work to is located approx. 3 hrs.
away, and the samples are sent on a daily basis by courier. The last

Hi All,
Kept meaning to post an update on Pekoe before
this. His last blood test results showed some improvement in the right
direction! Mar. 29th, his results were as follows:
WBC - 8.4 (Range = 4.2 - 13) - [Mar. 8th was 6.6]
RBC - 5.6 (6.2 - 10.6) - [was 5.0]
Hb - 107 (93 - 153) - [was
Hi Sandra,
The only information I have regarding the dosage to give
is what my vet was able to find out from the Virbagen Omega website:
Cats: The reconstituted product should be injected subcutaneously
once daily for 5 consecutive days. The dose is 1 MU/kg bodyweight.
Three separate
Some more information I have:
It is recommended to test blood parameters 14 days after
the beginning of treatment, on Day 14. If hematocrit (PCV) and/or RBC
count are within physiological ranges, there is a high probability for the cat
to be a "good responder" to interferon therapy. In
Hello All,
I never did get around to posting Pekoe's blood test
results from 2 weeks ago. He had a recheck just yesterday as well.
The first set of numbers are from Feb. 22, the numbers in ( ) are the normal
ranges, and the second set of numbers are from Mar. 8 -
WBC - 7.3 (Normal = 4.2 -
Hello All,
Quick question - can Interferon Alpha be put in canned
food, or does it have to be given directly into the mouth? Everything I've
read seems to indicate that it has to be given directly, targeted at the
tonsils?
Thanks,
Marlene

Hi Nina,
I am able to get my Interferon Alpha from the Veterinary
Compounding Pharmacy that our vet clinic deals with. They apparently had
some frozen from another client I guess. They will be dispensing it at the
dosage I need, and said they can also flavour it - Chicken, Liver or Beef.
Pekoe is still doing fairly well - good appetite, going
to the litter box, playing a little. His nose, gums, and pads are still
fairly pink - occasionally get a little pale, but return to pink. I took
him to the vet a few days ago for a recheck of his blood work. Only got a

Hi All,
I found out a bit of information regarding the
"potential" availability in Canada. According to a Senior Veterinary
Biologics Evaluator, Veterinary Biologics Section, Canadian Food Inspection
Agency - apparently the manufacturer had submitted all the necessary paperwork,
etc. for
Sheila,
I belonged to the CRF list that Belinda mentioned, for 4
yrs. There's a wealth of good advice and information to be found
there. Our 16 yr. old Casper was diagnosed with CRF and we very
successfully treated him with subQ fluids for over 4 yrs. We also had to
alter his diet - he
Hi All,
Pekoe has been doing quite well actually, in spite of
his blood work numbers. I took your advice (my own as well), and have
continued him on the Doxycycline until it's all used up - vet also agreed.
He's currently also on Prednisone 5 mg. twice daily. I will post his blood
results
Hello All,
Pekoe's blood work came back from the Lab today -
RBC - 6.0 (Normal Range - 6.2 - 10.6)
MCV - 53 (39 - 52)
Platelets - 5 (93 - 514) Smear agrees with machine platelet count
MPV - 21.5 (8 - 21)
Rubricyte Count - 0.37 (0.0 - 0.0)
I know - I just about keeled over when I saw his
Tonya:
When Pekoe had Hemobart last Feb., he responded very
well to the Doxycycline. But, something makes me think that this time,
it's more than Hemobart. And yet, he isn't lethargic or "hiding", his
appetite is good, he's still interested in playing (just not as hard), he wants
to sit
Nina,
Thanks so much for the prayers and encouragement.
My mind is finally "functioning" again somewhat after everything today. I
too just can't fathom that Pekoe's platelets are so low, and yet he's
still more or less himself? I looked up Digby's last blood work that
he had done the
Hello All,
First of all, my condolences to all of you who have lost
a beloved furbaby, and my best wishes to all who are caring for ill ones.
I haven't posted in many months, since we lost our sweet
little Digby to FelV last May. I mostly lurk and have kept up with the
posts on a daily
Thanks to all who have responded so far. I have
pretty much the same thoughts/questions as you have suggested. Obviously,
a factor will also be if his blood test results are satisfactory to be able to
go ahead with the dental.
Michelle:
Unfortunately, a dental vet is not really an
Hi Group,
First of all, I want to thank all of you for your
sympathies expressed when we lost Digby last month. It meant a great deal
to us. Digby "came home" last Friday, which seems to help in the grieving
process.
We're taking Pekoe to the vet tomorrow just for a
check-up and some
Hello Group,
I received this email from my brother-in-law yesterday
(he and his wife are also cat people). I wanted to share his thoughts with
you, as I found it quite consoling and hope others may find some comfort as
well.

Dear Group,
It is with great sadness that I tell you that Digby
crossed over on Tues. evening (Mar. 24th). I had taken him to the vet
clinic that morning, to obtain some repeat blood work to check his numbers from
the previous week. Our intent was to then take him the next morning to see
Hi Group,
Can't think too clearly at the moment, but I think we're
going to lose Digby. Having to syringe feed him now and give
Doxycycline. Blood work (according to the vet lab) seems to be indicating
something going on in the bone marrow,may/may not beHemobart.
They also say there's a
Thank you all for your words of encouragement - it
really helps me to "stay focused" so to speak. The latest on Digby may or
may not be good. His regular vet wanted to see him yesterday. His
temp. was still elevated (40.5 C). I weighed him before we took him in,
and since just this past
He's supposed to be tested for Hemobart with the other
blood work that was ordered. I was also concerned about his PCV being at
the low end of normal, but the vet I saw didn't seem as concerned about it as I
was?

Nina,
I use the compounded liquid form of Doxycycline.
Until the liquid form came in, the vet gave me a few pills to start with, which
they broke up for me since his dose was 1/3 tab. twice a day. When I gave
the pills, I used these things called Pill Pockets and they worked quite
well.
