Terrie, this really
doesn't sound right. Even *people* can get copies of their medical records
on request. Maybe someone else here is more knowledgeable on the law
aspects, but since animals are considered property, and therefore Dukee was your
property, you should have a right to get a copy of his medical
records. I would expect them to charge youa reasonable
amountfor copying, though.

It occurred to me that
possibly Terrie needs to write a letter formally requesting them. The law
puts a lot of stock by stuff in writing (yes, I am a legal secretary ;-)).
They may not want to fork them over (but why, if they have nothing to hide?) but
they may have to if the request is made in the proper form.

And I'm thinking if they're being such pr*cks about giving
you a copy of Dukee's records, they're going to do the very least thing required
of them if you do ask. Assuming you do push, and/or change vets and ask
for the transfer of records, you probably need to be very explicit and tell them
you want the records of all pets you have ever had there, living or deceased,
transferred or copied. (Oh, and if you do change vets, probably you need
to ask the new onesup front about their policy on copies of
records.)

Sorry
this is such a hassle at this already bad time for you,

Hi there,

I am in Texas. This is my vet's statement on medical records:

http://www.staroftexasvet.com/pages/6/index.htm

This is not because he will not release copies - he is explaining why a person may or may not be able to obtain copies from their previous vet.

The emergency hospital here gives me copies of EVERYTHING when I pay/checkout, including the notes they take when they check on the animals. It is pretty cool, I wish everyone did that.

2006-10-31 Thread TatorBunz

Wow, I lived in TX back in the early 80s up until 91 never had
a problem with getting my Pet Vet records either.
Especially since I was moving back to WA.
state.

Just to let you know I have spoke with a person of Veterinary
Board. She told me to write a letter of request and that they have 15 days to
get to me since the services were rendered and paid in full.
She gave me the Washington rules and laws along with what
Belinda sent me.
If they don't comply or if the records appeared tampered with
to file a complaint with them.
Something doesn't feel right about this. I think they aren't
being honest with me on what happened to Dukee. Then charge the amount they
did.
God, I will be so upset if this is the case and will file a
lawsuit against them.

The emergency hospital here gives me copies of EVERYTHING when I

My husband thinks Dukee died the same day he had the surgery
and they wanted to make the bucks for having him over the
weekend.
He is using some curse words right now. Not a happy
camper.
I just told him about my experience with the Vet trying to get
copies.
Normally, don't tell him everything unless there is a
need.
Didn't want to start anything.

I have a question and probably morbid:
Is there anyway they can find out how longpet has
been dead before they are returned back to their owners.
I know they can on humans.
What I think is funny is that he was put in a Science Diet box
and it was tape very well. You would have to use a knife to open it. I didn't
open the box to look at him really didn't want to see him that way. I wanted to
remember as he was. Maybe I should have.

It is not unusual for vets to wrap an animal
in a box/plastic bag for the family. My vets do it and I have had others
do it. It is a matter of people often do not want to see the little one
after he has left and secondly there are bodily changes that may be unpleasant
for the people to deal with. Like I said, my vets do this for me then I
remove my little friend and put him/her in a box of my choosing for
burial.

I am not happy with the vet's refusal to
give you copies of the files. However, I do not find the box to be a
problem. He may well have been trying to do you a favor by fixing Dukee's
body for burial.

Did you talk to the vet or a vet tech re
getting the records?

It is terrible that you are having to deal
with this now. Please do not drive yourself crazy by doubting
yourself.

Geez Terrie, as if you didn't have enough to deal with
right now. They always give me the records. I have a

They don't seem to care.

You have gotten some good advice. Those are the
things i would do.

That's sad, a Science Diet box I now cremate, but before I moved up
north (where you can't dig graves 7 months of the year due to frozen ground),
I'd had a cat that had been euthanised. The vet I used had special cardboard
"coffins". They even lined them with baby blankets (I now donate all baby
blankets to vets in order for them to provide this to others, because it was
such a comfort to me). They were special made boxes JUST for returning cats to
owners who wished to take them home to be buried. There was NO tape, and the cat
looked for all the world likehe were sleeping peacefully. My cremains also
come in a plastic "urn", NOT in a box or baggie. I can't even fathom the
horrible bedside manner of a vet that would even consider throwing the remains
of someone's pet into a old, left-over box from that day's UPS delivery. I never
knew any vet did that, I guess I have been very lucky to have very compassionate
and caring vets!

Come to think of it, what a great cause we could work towards... if we all
made arrangements with our local vets to knit or crochet "baby" blankets for the
specific use of giving to pet owners whohad a cat euthanised or die at
their clinics. I know I have a long winter coming and could use a hobby. I can't
even communicate how much difference the simple gesture of putting a baby
blanket in my baby's coffin when they brought his body out to me meant it
was very special.

According to the AVMA website, Veterinarians are obligated to provide
copies or summaries of medical records when requested by the client.
Veterinarians should secure a written release to document that
request. Perhaps you could contact your state board?

 Hi all,
I ask for the records on Dukee they won't release them to me.
 They said
the only way they would release them if another Vet requested
 them. Then it
 would be by fax only.
This is the first time I have ever been turned down getting any
 Vet records.
 Is this right?
I can tell you I'm getting disappointed in some Vets in the area
 I moved to.

Re: Vet Records/Morbid question

2006-10-31 Thread Marylyn

I understand how wonderful it was to get your
friend back in this manner. However, the vets I know very caringly use
boxes and, more often, trash bags for wrapping. I know the vets involved
in the trash bag wrapping. They are extremely caring and if they
knowyou are bringing a box of your own, try to remove the bag. They
use plastic because of the fluids released naturally. I know this is not
really comforting but it is a reality check. The SD box would not be out
of order in my world. I would prefer all little ones came home
differently--that is why I get my own boxes, usually cedar, pine or oak.
Don't think me insensitive. I have buried too many of my own and they all
have granite markers that anyone would be pleased to use for a
child. Just don't dwell on the box.
