PS. In a young cat especially, undetected HCM usually strikes kitties 6
and under, I had one that was 9 years old die from this. Perfectly
healthy until he had a seizure and died. The vet said from the symptoms
I described it was heart related. He did check him over to see if he
choked on anything but there were no outward symptoms of anything.

Susan, if you negative cats are up on their shots, let your positive baby in
with them. i have 2 positives and they are not seperated. my vet said that as
long as the negatives are up on their shots and there are no bloody battles
(especially biting), there should be no problem. i tried to keep my first
positive seperate and she was miserable. so was i. now everyone is happy, fat
and sassy and having a ball. no guilt feelings for keeping them apart. dorlis

"saddle" aneurysms--i can't adequately describe the medical condition,
but like all aneurysms, they kill quickly and silently. i'm not sure
why FeLVs would be more susceptible to them than any other cat would
be, or if we're just more attuned to what happens to our positives
because we're aware that they're often on the edge.

and yes, HCM can be detected with an EEG; it's often (if not always?
not sure about that part) genetic--a BIG problem in maine coons (they
have isolated the genes responsible), and bengals, and certain other
breeds with HCM, often the ONLY symptom is sudden death, but if a
cat is diagnosed, meds are very effective in controlling it.

Because of the age and suddeness I would guess a heart thing. Many
cats with undiagnosed Cardiomyapathy can pass suddenly with no outward
symptoms, generally before or by the age of 6. I lost my Snyder very
suddenly at age 9, no symptoms what-so-ever, just the day he died, he
had a heart attack. The vet I took him to said with the symptoms I
described he most likely had a heart attack and that many cats with HCM
don't show any symptoms until it's too late.

Just a guess though, you won't know unless you have a necropsy done.

wonderfully. Dr. Bosewell has a DVM degree and has chosen holistic

Everybody has different circumstances, but is there any way you could
integrate your other FeLV+ baby into the household? Many people on this

either. That's a thing that some people are comfortable with and some
aren't, but it's something to think about and research. The files of this

Re: [Felvtalk] Sudden passing?

2009-06-02 Thread Kerry MacKenzie
I'm so sorry Susan. What a shock for you.
I had this very discussion yesterday with a rescuer. We were commenting on how
quickly and devastatingly our FeLV cats can succumb. One day they can seem ok,
the next they're gone. In my experience I've had a few days' notice. But by
that time the nonregenerative anemia was taking its toll, or the lungs were
full of fluid, or there were masses of tumors.
Cats as we know are very good at hiding pain. You said that looking back he may
have seemed a bit lethargic. One thing that will happen now--I'm sure we all
agree on this--you will become ultra-observant and notice every little change
in behavior in any of your cats in future (it pretty well always means
something is amiss, and is all we often have to go on). It was only after my
very first FeLV cat passed that I realized his habit in the last few weeks of
sitting with his back to everyone had with hindsight meant he wasn't feeling
good (probably understatement). I consider it his legacy to the rest of
us---I'm ever-vigilant now for any hint of behavior change.
I would just make sure your remaining sweetie gets oodles of cuddles and
attention now which I'm sure you're already doing. This is a tough time for him
to be sure. Maybe consider a new FeLV companion for him in due course...
Devastating though it is, your little sweetie at least had a peaceful passing.
That's what I would wish for mine. Fast, and no vet visit involved.
Give your little sweetie a cuddle from me,
Kerry

Subject: [Felvtalk] Sudden passing?

My FeLV+ 5-year-old (or so) kitty died suddenly over the weekend and I was
wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences or heard of any with
otherwise (seemingly) healthy leuk-positive cats. He seemed fine, thriving in
fact: plump, nice coat, good appetite, good stool, active, affectionate. I
found him curled up as if he were sleeping comfortably but he was gone.
Thinking back, he may have seemed slightly lethargic for a day or two
beforehand, but not enough to warrant any concern at the time on my part. Does
anyone know if this happens -- a heart thing? Stroke? Needless to say, the only
other FeLV+ cat in the household (they were sequestered together) seems kinda
lost, and I am a bit worried that he will be affected physically.
Thanks!
Susan

I am not going through your grief but that was a wonderful way for her
to die.

I didn't know about holistic vets. Thank you for mentioning it. What
is an "02 Tent"?

She stumbled the day before she died so I made a call to Middletown
Animal Clinic in Louisville, KY (her regular vets) and we made a Code
3 run from my farm (120 miles). Her vet waited for us; we tried lots of
things and I took her to her holistic vet, put her in an O2 tent etc.
She just couldn't make it. Luckily she died beside me in the Jeep (we
were going to my home with O2 to fix her a tent there). She left in a
safe spot, unassisted by the vets she hated.

Susan, I don't know much about FeLV cats and am new to this list. I
may seem COLD saying this but I hope Sammie will die like your cat. I
realize it's very difficult but my greatest fear is to see Sammie
suffer.

I do feel very sorry for your other cat. I hope he will be OK.

Never have I heard such stories about FeLV - I didn't know what FeLV was
until last Thursday and it's heartbreaking.

Susan
