We all have differing opinions on how far to go to save a cat who is suffering.
In my opinion you did the best thing for your cat. I'm sorry you lost him.

Boy was not good, at all, last night. He went down hill very fast. He was
fine last Thursday, then Friday we moved, I thought he just was scared. I left
him alone on Friday and really started to watch him Saturday and Sunday, Monday
he went to the vet. He slept most of the weekend, literally, then last night he
was just lifeless. He didn't get up, he laid where ever I put him. I would walk
him to the litter box, he would go then lay right outside the box, he didnt'
have the strength to walk. (By the time I got home last nght, he was laying on
the coffee table, I had given him some amoxacillian, I thought he was getting
close to the edge, so I scooted him toward the middle of the table and when I
did, there was poop balls by this tail. It was almost like he released himself
and didn't know it! When we got him to the vet he just laid, then once he did
get up to walk, he acted like he was walking side ways and couldn't support
himself. It was just aweful!!! I then just held
him and loved him all I could. His quality of life was not good on Monday. It
sickened me to look at the unhappiness on his face. His gums were almost a
white/yellow color, he was dehydrated, just bad off. There was no way to get
him back, I don't think. Did I do the right thing by PTS?

Well, it sounds like the vet tested him for felv and he was pos.

  Was he suffering?

Is this why the vet decided to euth?

Because even if they are symptomatic, they can still have a good quality of
life being felv+.

And yes, you should get your other 2 kitties combo tested, you need to know
what to expect.

But please, if they do test pos for felv, remember, they can live a good
life for quite some time, you just to help them along by boosting their little
immune systems.

Take each day as a precious gift, because that'swhat it is.

This list is set up for kitty mommies daddies just like you, and there is a
wealth of good information here.

You will get more ideas than you will know what to do with, but you will be
able to figure out what works best for you, your cats your living
arrangements

One last note, if your vet decided to PTS because the cat was felv+ and sick,
but not suffering (to be determined as YOU see fit w/ your vet's
consultation)...it might be best to look for another vet that is more felv+
savvy.

Just my 2 cents,I could be wrong.

I'm so sorry for your loss. If your other cats are vaccinated, your chances
are very good that your other cats will test negative. Also, the older your

Please stick around and keep learning from these guys.
There is usually something helpful every day or two

3-months before a retesting and everything will
probably be just dandy, there is nothing wrong with
keeping their immune systems boosted during the
waiting period. Just so you know you are completely on
top of things from minute one.

Angela,
I'm so sorry to hear about your boy.
Had he been re-tested recently for Felv?
Normally, it is the secodary illnesses that take our Felv kids.
Such as different cancers.
Due to their weak immune systems.
Did he have a biopsy done prior indicate what kind of cancer he had?
How old was your boy?
What are the ages of the kitties living in your house?
I'm sorry for asking these questions but it does have bearing.
If everyone has been together for 3 years you would have seen signs long
before now if they were infected.
Yes, Felv can lay dormant in the bone marrow even when they are tested
young.
As I know this for a fact. It has happened to one of my cats.
It takes a cold or respiratory illness (URI) to bring it on even though they
may have tested negative prior when healthy.
That is why when you get kittens from unknown sources they should be
retested every 3 months up to they are adults for accuracy. Adults should be
tested
yearly.
I've had numerous Vets say most tests done as kittens are not accurate.
When there are more than one kitty living in the house when one dies for
unknown reasons a necropsy should be done by your Vet.
Once again I'm sorry for your loss.
Please take care of yourself.
Your fur-babies are in my thoughts and prayers.

feline leukemia+). Now another of mine has a similar heart problem (not related
and not contagious)somedays I am overwhelmed...I try to know that what I
learned with Keisha will help me better care for Lucy.

a note of hope ~ I had two feline leuk positive boys. Squeaky was never sick
during his first 22 years. Stripes lived to 16 despite being sick on and off.
We have finally figured out a protocol that is working for Isabella for now.
She was sicker than the boys and came to us in May (years after the boys died).
There is hope. If your kittys have feline leukemia, then it's plan B for
treatment. Please try to breathe and know that they are in good hands and you
can handle whatever comes your way. These kitties are put in our lives for a
reason. ALLOW yourself to grieve and be mad and sad...it's all part of the
process.

My heart reaches to yours...right this moment...you and all 3 kitties are in my

Laurie,
I just have a couple questions: Did Squeaky and
Stripes have the FeLV virus for many years and
survive? If so maybe both were just carriers? The fact
Stripes lived to age 16, even with illnesses during
that time, is still amazing.
As for the heart problems you have been facing:
Many years ago I had a kitty that was diagnoised with
a heart problem...forgot the name of it, where the
heart is enlarged, and fluid builds up in the
lungs...Well this I think may have been a genetic
condition ? I still do not know...
At the time I tried to read up on all I could and saw
where sometimes huge doses of taurine helped save some
cats that might otherwise have succumbed to various
heart conditions...This was twenty years ago...I know
a lot has come to light since then. I'm sure there is
a lot of info online and I'm sure you have been neck
deep in it...
I guess it cannot hurt for all of us here to know a
little about everything when it comes to our
cats...The very best to you and Lucy...please keep us
posted regarding her progress and treatments.
Thank you, Glenda

If they are otherwise health, DO NOT be forced to put them down simply because
they test positive for FeLV. Kittens/Cats can live several years and be
healthy even with FeLV. Obviously, all cats (pets, people) die so when
they get ill and in pain, that is the time to PTS, not when they are still
healthy and enjoying a quality of life.

I know it's sad, I have three cats right now that are dying, two w/FeLV and one
with tummy cancer.

Angela, definitely keep the appt.
Knowing is better than not knowing, imo.
If you know they are positive, you can treat them and take steps to keep them
asymptomatic
If you find out they are negative, you can breather easy. A friend had a
negative in with a group of positives for FIVE YEARS and he never got sick
(that's how she found out he was negative ~ had him tested or retested ~ she
can't remember if she tested him originally...thinks she did). Anyhoo, he is
about 10 now and healthy!

2007-08-21 Thread Kelley Saveika
Angela,

I think there is some confusion. I'm not sure why you euthanized your cat.

Cats should never, ever be PTS just because of a positive FELV test,
especially not if it is an in-house SNAP test.

FELV is not cancer. It is a virus. There are cancers that FELV+ cats
are more likely to get than FELV- cats, but these cancers are
treatable.

Please do not PTS your other cats if they are FELV+. I would
recommend getting a different vet.

I know how shocking a diagnosis can be, but unless a cat is actively
suffering there is no reason to rush to PTS.

But please, if they do test pos for felv, remember, they can live a good life
for quite some time, you just to help them along by boosting their little
immune systems.

If they are otherwise health, DO NOT be forced to put them down simply
because they test positive for FeLV. Kittens/Cats can live several years and
be healthy even with FeLV. Obviously, all cats (pets, people) die so when
they get ill and in pain, that is the time to PTS, not when they are still
healthy and enjoying a quality of life.

I know it's sad, I have three cats right now that are dying, two w/FeLV and
one with tummy cancer.

Felv+ is an odd disease, there are so many ways it can kill.

Stress can bring out the disease very easily, and the stress of packing

This sounds exactly like what happened to my Pumpkin. What may be different
is that Pumpkins was hiding the fact he was not eating. Although I did
figure it out. His gums were exactly as you described he spent two nights at
the vet hospital with fluids and IV Baytril. He crashed the second night. I
imagine much like your baby did. His spirit was gone when I arrived to visit
him that morning. They had cleaned him up and he was cold. I felt so bad
that I did not see his symptoms sooner. I had him euthanized. Cats are good
at hiding there symptoms. I had another cat who was sick at the same time
and being treated for anemia by a different vet. This was due to the fact he
had been hit by a car several months earlier and that was the only available
vet who could see him in a hurry.

Now I was worried Junior's condition was more serious. I took him back in
that week and though he looked fine he had a fever of 106.5. The kept him
hydrated him and called me to say they wanted to to a FELV test. He has
tested neg that same year. It came back positive. I had 11 cats at that
time. Two more tested positive. One also had been sickly had FIV as well. He
had been adopted from a shelter. I was in panic mode last fall. The group
kept me going. I lost Tiny from unrelated cause he died very suddenly last
Christmas. Lionel, my felv/fiv cat was also PTS he was not well.

Good news Junior is stable and he had a very rough go but is fine now other
than his pos status. He gets immune booster like the group says.

Hi Angela,

I am really sorry to hear about your sweet Boy. It sounds like you did the
right thing to pts with the information you had at the time. He was probably
anemic, because of the white gums, and anemia is a really hard battle to fight.
A lot of times, we don't see cats survive once they become very anemic.
That's how I lost my sweet Cricket almost two years ago. I would go ahead and
have the other two kitties tested, but do not pts if they are positive.
Sometimes you can get a false positive or negative on the Elisa tests, so we
recommend the IFA test; it's more conclusive. See if your vet can do that one.
Please let us know what happens at the vet's today, and again, I am so sorry
about your furbaby. You are under a lot of stress right now with your recent
move, and losing Boy so suddenly to a disease you probably didn't know much
about or that he even had it, so be gentle with yourself. It does get easier
if you allow yourself a little time to
 grieve for him.

Susan,
Boy was not good, at all, last night. He went down hill very fast. He was fine
last Thursday, then Friday we moved, I thought he just was scared. I left him
alone on Friday and really started to watch him Saturday and Sunday, Monday he
went to the vet.
When we got him to the vet he just laid, then once he did
get up to walk, he acted like he was walking side ways and couldn't support
himself. It was just
aweful!!! I then just held him and loved him all I could. His quality of life
was not good on Monday. It sickened me to look at the unhappiness on his face.
His gums were almost a white/yellow color, he was dehydrated, just bad off.
There was no way to get him back, I don't think. Did I do the right thing by
PTS?

Thank goodness, Ang, aren't you glad they went now? It is an excellent
idea to retest in any case, and you should make sure that the retest is
IFA just to be sure. Now take a deep breath and give your kitties a
hug. And, as Wendy says, take some time to grieve for Boy. Sometimes
it helps to talk to them -- just in case something you were feeling went
unsaid. And invite him to visit you often, tell him this new home is
his home although he didn't have much time there.

Re: Please talk to me

2007-08-21 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Angela

That is great news. I decided not to retest my kitties bc they were all
equally exposed and the expense of testing 9 cats again. I had higher than
usual positives. My thought is that I had a pretty virulent strain of FeLV
as I had a 25% tested positive. All the remaining cats have been vaccinated
and I will vaccinate again this year. After that I will probably go to the 3
year protocol. None of the remaining cats have been sick. If one gets sick I
would test at that time. This is just what I am doing.

With the number of cats you have I would go for the retest in the 3 months
as your vet suggested.
