2012-03-18 Thread Marta Gasper
Yes a cat can test + for both. FIV is not transmitted through bowls, bedding
etc but through deep bites. FeLV is more contagious but just wash bowls etc.
Don't have to wait six months

Re: [Felvtalk] Ginger - new kitten

2012-03-18 Thread Beth
Vets still tell people to wait 6 months & throw everything away. No logic to
it, but they want to cover themselves. Part of why people are so scared of FeLV.

Congratulations!

Just wash all the bedding, feeding bowls that are plastic (don't use them,
anyway because they are porous), get some new toys, and you're set! I
remember the days when it was a 6-month wait before one could introduce a
new FeLV- cat into a household that had a FeLV+ cat..Natalie

You shouldm't need to do anything special. You can wash bowls & bedding, but it

Re: [Felvtalk] Ginger

2012-03-11 Thread MaiMaiPG
I was broken hearted when my Dixie left this world. It was the
hardest thing to walk into my home in Louisville without her. It was
almost impossible to come back to the farm alone. We moved in here
together andshe decided I had cried enough after a month and
sent me a tiny little feral kitten in one of her favorite colors (yes,
she had favorites) from the same pine thicket she came from. Two
weeks later she sent me a second tiny feral kitten. One had her
adventurous nature and the other her snuggling/cuddling natureyes,
it took two kittens who grew into cats at least twice Dixie's size to
take care of me. I truly believe she sent them. I don't do kittens
because they are easier to rehome than grown catssad but true.
These little boys were the first kittens I raisedor, more
accurately, who raised me and they are wonderful. Those animals who
are always in our hearts send others to heal our breaking hearts.

To leave their homes, and all they

I too would make a will, if I could write.
To some poor, wistful, lonely stray
I'd leave my happy home,
My dish, my cozy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy, The well-loved

The love, that at the last Could help me to a peaceful, painless

My mothr always told me (when I complained that she was gving someone else more
attention) that she had many rooms in her heart and there was always room to
add another. So it is with our cats, we love each equally, just in a different
way and there is always room for one more.

Many years ago the groomer for my poodle told me when Pixie (75 lbs) developed
Lymphoma to make plans ahead of time to adopt another dog. He said the house
would be so lonely and quiet when we came home from the vet's that it would be
unbearable. He was right, but we had P.I.A. (pain-in-the-ass because she was
always under foot) to ease the pain. My father nver cried, except when we had
to say goodby to Pixie andwhen my mother passed away. Shows how they can gt
under your skin and into your heart. I am not married, so I hae no people in
my home, but I do have 7 cats and I can never say I am lonely and unloved.

2012-03-11 Thread Marta Gasper
Yes, getting another kitty is not betrayal at all as others have said. I do
rescue and some pass unfortunatly; when I rescue another I'm doing it in the
name of the one that died. Many rescues that died are a lesson, either
diseases, people, etc but I feel the kitty died in vain if I don't save another
with the new knowledge I've._I agree completly it is sad hearing other people
saying that after their late pet they won't get another one. I understand how
they feel but I've the small thought that one of the reasons is to save
themselves the pain of losing a pet, somehow it sounds like the pet died so
this person won't adopt again.
Maybe I'm too judgamental(sp)..in any case when you adopt another, Ginger will
be happy, it is never an insult to her memory.

I think Ginger would be very proud of you for saving the life of another
kitty. We don't replace loved ones that have passed with new ones, the new
ones are added to our hearts. I have lost many FeLV+ kitties over the 7
years I have been caring for them and I hold them all dear to me forever.
I do hope you will get another FeLV+ kitty, they have such a tough time
finding homes.

Marinda, each of us has to decide when we are ready for a new kitty.  I've
never had just one kitty and have found great comfort from the others when one
has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.    Check with your local shelter and rescue
groups.  Saving a kitty would be a wonderful tribute to ginger

2012-03-10 Thread GRAS
I can never understand how people would never want to get another pet; they
just don't want to lose them againbut what a joyless life it would be
without them! Before we started the cat rescue, every time one of our cats
died, I'd rush over to our vet the very next day and ask whether they had
any cats (he always has abandoned cats) - I didn't even ask questions, just
grabbed the first cat that was available. All turned out to be the "best
cats ever", as if they weren't all the best cats ever, anyway, right?

Well said Natalie. So many people struggle with this. I used to have my own
pet grooming business and had this come up every so often with customers. So
sad. Some vow to never ever have another pet. I always told them that they
were such wonderful pet parents and there were so many that needed homes.
But I never thought to say it was a tribute to the pet that died. Such a
wonderful perspective. Thank you!

Re: [Felvtalk] Ginger; virus in bone marrow

I believe that when the IFA test becomes positive, the virus has gotten into
the bone marrow.

I'm a little confused. I thought the FeLV virus gets into the bone marrow
of every cat that is not able to extinguish the virus. The virus gets into
the blood stream then progresses to the bone marrow. From there the virus
will replicate in the white blood cells and the cat will stay persistantly
viremic or it will become dormant in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is
where the virus resides in every positive cat isn't it?

.. I want to tell you what hapenned to us with our FeLV+ Jourdan. On Thurs
vet though virus was in the bone marrow. Sat she was very poor but she was
holding her own. By Mon one of her eyes looked very strange so I went to get
things ready to get her to vet, drove her there, less than 10 mts. We got
her out of carrier, set on table, when vet came in she reared her head up
and stared at them. Both her eyes were completly white, looked like
something out of a horror movie. Vet said the virus would have gotten in her
brain and made her blind, she was in lots of pain so we helped her along.
But did I wish I had done it before..

I'm not saying same will happen to Ginger but we don't know. If virus is in
the bone marrow it is very bad and she's really suffering. Whatever you do
will be the best decision

Sending a big hug
