[Finale] Audio creation fail

2015-01-27 Thread Richard Huggins
I'm getting an error message that says An error occurred while saving the
audio file (Error -2)
I can't get Finale to create an audio file of the piece in question. I've
unsuccessfully tried:
* Renaming the piece
* Quitting and relaunching
I suppose that I could use live playback while capturing the audio with a
hijack program, but I'd like to know what the error code means and if there are
other things to try.

Re: [Finale] Finale window pane problem

2015-01-27 Thread Richard Huggins
CAn I presume that you have remembered that if ever you use the Hand tool to
move the score around, you can end up with some windows that don't look right.
Usually though you remember that and get everything back to default positions.

Updated to latest FINMAC14 version. Now, what was a surmountable problem has
become chronic.  The window pane is cut off on the left side.  If one looks at
bottom left I can see the bar number inset and the right scroll arrow -- the
left scroll arrow is inaccessible.  This lacunae extends into the score area
itself.  Some kind of incompatibility but what?  Any suggestions appreciated.

[Finale] VArious

2015-01-25 Thread Richard Huggins
FINMAC 2012c
1. I want to save the tool selection metatools (such as [on Mac] Control-F for
Speedy, etc.) But I've forgotten what that process is called, what library is
being saved. Can someone remind me or tell me how to save it?
2. Finale insists on putting a decrescendo into the playback of anything with a
longish ending, even though in Human Playback prefs I have made sure to
de-select that choice. What am I overlooking or what trick can I use to defeat
that at least long enough to get a playback as desired?
3. I've never had much luck trying to understand how to adjust or select those
slant-lined symbols for rit. even after poring over the docs. Recently, for
example, I put rit. in the score and it seemed to ignore it for two measures,
then dump everything it had into the final two measures. Any illumination
welcome.
Thanks for help with any one of these!

Re: [Finale] Can't change font size for part of a text block

2015-01-13 Thread Richard Huggins
I believe that you're right, that this is something that USED to work. For
example, in writing composer-arranger credits, a common preference among
publishers I've worked with is for the composer info to be BF roman and the
arranger info to be reg face italic. It used to be possible to use the same
frame for both but now it requires two frames and the attending attributes
issues, et al. Small thing, one might say, but it's annoying as heck to me.

positive improvements along the way, but...

...I've just wasted an unacceptable amount of time trying, with some
input - not help - from the on line User Manual, to change the font size
for just one character in a Text block, which has never previously
caused me any problem. In my Copyright notice  I like to have the
C-in-a-circle sign about the same height as the capital letters in the
remainder of the notice. I can highlight just the one character, and
that's what shows up in the edit menu, but when I change the size and
exit the box the change has been applied to the whole text block. :(
The same thing happens if I just try to change the year to bold.

My current time-saving work-around is to create a separate text block

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 136, Issue 16

2014-11-29 Thread Richard Huggins
When I was a music editor, when dealing with a pitch on beat one that had been
altered on the final beat of the previous measure but was restored in the new
measure by the key signature, it was my practice to do two non-conventional
things: to place an accidental on the pitch and not to parenthesize it. If the
pitch had been altered earlier in the preceding measure and not used again, I
would not do this.

There are other parameters that I used to determine what I would do but they
were judgment calls. I tried to be consistent.

[Finale] One measure of uneven playback

2014-08-12 Thread Richard Huggins
I've got one measure of uneven playback and so far nothing has dislodged it. I
have used Clear (only tempo changes checked on filter), have used Cut then
re-engraved, have used Delete and then re-engraved, and I'm sure some other
actions. I had originally tapped tempo for entire song and everything else
works fine, just can't figure out what's making this measure drag and why i
can't replace it without it doing the same thing as the measure it replaced.

A bandaid fix is sorta working. I created an invisible tempo change staff
expression that approximates the tempo of the measures that precede and follow
the errant one, then used another hidden staff expression to cancel that out in
the next measure with a zero-value tempo change. It'll do, but I'd like some
things to think about if this happens again.Theories or fixes welcome.

Re: [Finale] Won't hide empty staves

2014-08-04 Thread Richard Huggins
I'll be more specific. I have a choral piece with a piano intro of 7 measures
and I wish to hide the vocal staves for that system. Then the ladies sing alone
for awhile, so I want to hide the men's stave on that system. I have
highlighted that system and invoked Hide Empty Staves. All that happens is that
the handles on the page blink off-on. Previously I had this page at 90% and
everythign worked fine. At 85% it does not work.

Strange also is that one empty stave is displaying in that piano intro system
when there are two empty staves in play. In other words, it's hiding one of
them, not the other. I tried converting to Show Empty Staves then  starting
over but it didn't work. One went away, one stayed. I did clear the empty
measures...several times :)

As for the handles, I see only one per stave (staff tool selected).

I will list some things in this message, and will add more in the

the story of K.L. Bates writing America the Beautiful in 1893 - for
singer actors, chorus, and chamber orch (strings, 2 fls, 2 trpts, 3
perc.).  I am making big-time use of folk songs and other existing
material, such as old sheet-music of obscure tunes that don't have
midi files anywhere (I use found midi files a lot in this sort of
thing, but I don't even have the time to spend much time at that now).
My plan is to give mostly straight-forward arrangements to the
choir, and contribute more originality to the instrumental and
narration portions before the prmire in November.

Many of you are pros, and have deadlines of your own, but some of you
may be able to share some work. No money to offer - I am getting a
little for the finished product, but not enough.

If anyone is with me so far, here are my first needs.  Any Fin file
 will do:

  1. Type out these songs:
  http://www.loc.gov/item/sm1871.02334/

My wife has already typed the words to the latter - I'll include that
  in my next email.

  2. same for some pdfs I can attach to private emails.  simple stuff.

  3.  A fin file, as simply scored as possible, of the Sousa arrangement

[Finale] finale win't stop

2013-10-09 Thread Richard Huggins
FIN-MAC 2012

Sometimes when I have Finale playing back (Ah0h) it simply will not stop
until it reaches the end. The computer keyboard seems frozen and powerless. I
try all the various known ,methods plus a dozen or so never tried before (heh
heh) but usually all I can do is Force Quit or listen to it play itself out
(ho-hum!) This possibly is related to if there's another app involved too, such
as Audacity and Finale, but I can;t swear by that.

Any ideas?

Re: [Finale] copying to layers

2013-03-18 Thread Richard Huggins
Many of you long-time users will amend the good old days of CompuServe and the
group that there. I believe it was about the time I was starting to use
finale. that was when I discovered that using finale dependended on having
resources such as veteran users who could explain how to do, given the
inadequacy of the manuals or the programming, at least for applying touches
here. most importantly, there were the benefit of learning how to do things
using core finale tools in ways not necessarily the core finale intent. That
is, learning to do X or Y by using the basic tools of finale in creative ways
and functional ones. This is absolutely invaluable and was key to success.

Is finale more intuitive these days? I would have to say so, but I think that
mainly resides in the opinion of the new users. Others of us have to unlearn
something so we can relearn how they do it now. I long have said for never
being caught at 1:45 on a Sunday morning to do something but having no way to
do it, my money is on finale. there are enough tools to figure some way to do,

I'm Ihankful for the many finale users who taught me those ways those ways.
Again, many that were not documented it just worked because the amount and
tools somewhere somehow to do. perhaps Sibeliust has caught up in this
regard, but I would hate to be starting over.

Yes. The .m3u file is a text file containing the FULL URL of the file. You
make a list of them separated by a carriage return and one CR at the end.

to the previous normal 5 line staff !

The arrows are telling you that if you paste or enter something at that
specific location, it will be tied to that beat or measure. Move the cursor
ever so slightly L-R or U-D and you'll see that cursor change (one less arrow)
telling you that now what you paste or assign will be tied to that area
more-less but is relatively free to move about the cabin. I usually prefer it
being ties to exactly where I wan it, so I choose that option.

By the way... when you're doing layout and you see a, lets say a dynamic
marking (p, mf f etc.), and you don't know how it got to where it is, and why
it's in such an odd location, chances are good that you didn't notice that one
of those arrows was pointing away from the stave when you pasted in/assigned
it. You'll see it in layout. That means that your cursor is/was low enough or
high enough that Finale thinks you're working on the previous stave or the
following one, and it has tied that marking to that stave and that point. Just
select the tool that applies, click inside the little box of that symbol (the
handle), and drag it until you see the arrow change, thenplace it where you
want it. (When something MUST stay where it is, always look for the two-arrow
indicator).

I can't account for your not being allowed to paste something onto the
percussion line but I don't believe it haha… go really slow and see if you
aren't offered a hand (smile).

My procedure, following a Finale freeze:

 1) cuss, get up and go get coffee or fruit juice, or go watch TV or

Finale needs to catch up with the extra mouse clicks that seemed to
 send it over the edge.

(1a opt.) If I have just entered a brilliant set of notes that promise

 2) If (1) failed to yield results, I close Finale, check the file save
times of my .mus file and the .asv file. If the latter is later, I
will rename the .mus file as some sort of a backup. Then I open the
.asv file, which I have in another folder, look it over, and if it
seems OK I save it as the main .mus file. If Finale gives any odd
behavior at this point - close and reboot.

Finale will make another .asv file when the time comes.

(i.e., remove asv from the filename). This also would leave an asv file
 for Finale to use.

This is what I do, and I have had to do it from time to time.

If I work with the asv file as if it was the main file, what happens when
Finale next tries to save a backup and encounters my asv file which I have
 modified?

It always replaces the last asv file with the latest one (I think).
Sometimes there's also an asv.asv file.

In any case, this method assures that no more than 5 minutes of work gets
 lost.

BTW, my experience with Final crashing is that it can happen when either and
Autosave interrupts an operation in progress, or vice versa.

[Finale] Wanting a sequential code for printouts

2010-09-07 Thread Richard Huggins
This comes under nothing asked, nothing discovered heh heh. Except I
hardly know how to ask it.

On the Mac...I'm wondering if there's some way to cause a unique
number (or alpha-numerical) to print on printouts of my choosing (in
other words, defeatable) that would help me keep various sheets of the
same printout of music easily identified. I know I could use the date
and time insert to do this, but I was hoping to keep my work habits
less advertised (haha) to those who might be working with these scores.

This would be automatically sequencing. For example, a multi-digit
number that keeps ascending until its peak then starts over. By
comparing the number on the 35 sheets I just dropped...I could easily
reorganize them.

I'm guessing this would be print driver related, not application,
wouldn't it? Which may be a complication. And this would be a job
code, not a per-sheet, which may complicate things unless there's an
interface to enable telling the whatever-it-is what to do.

Or is there a better idea?

1. If I select Measure Tool and any measure, and if I change Use Beat

only until the measure is touched again with Speedy or Simple, or even

[Finale] Lost my stems

2010-08-04 Thread Richard Huggins

FINMAC 2007

I opened a file and all my bass clef stems are gone. Nothing I've
thought of has worked, including stab-at-it things such as respelling,
reengraving, changing clefs then back again, and cursing. The treble
clef is fine. If I paste a bass clef measure into the treble clef the
stems appear. If I paster treble clef notes into bass clef, their
stems disappear.Stems *is* checked under Items to Display.

What am I overlooking?

And the prize goes to J.D. !! It was, in fact, an errant staff style,

when I cleared staff styles, the stems returned.

[Finale] Loses interface link

2010-01-29 Thread Richard Huggins
Periodically I am losing the link to my interface. Speedy quits
working and the icon in Mac OS Audio/MISI Setup is dimmed.

The only solution I know of is to do a Restart, which can be danged

I wonder if anyone has a theory as to what causes this, and/or a
suggestion of things to try short of a restart that might re-establish
the link. Is there any chance that if I have too many apps running I
somehow drain the free RAM enough until the interface link more-less

What used to correct it until the next time my computer went to

2010-01-27 Thread Richard Huggins
If you must have three distinct voices, using Goldberg as an example, Im not
aware of a rule governing the stem of the third note. My point was that you
coould have a G on beat one, a G-B on beat 2, and a G-B-D on beat 3, with Gs
and Bs tied. If a pianist played the Goldberg acc to the example or acc to my
way the ear result is the same.

If the Goldberg or similar is a transcription, and the notes rep different
instruments, that might be diff.

Not sure I quite understand what you mean, unless it's replacing the three

staff.

This appears to be the Bingo! factor...

I then set the screen view percentage at 200%. I still got a dead-

*view* the music at greater than 100% and still get an accurate
graphic, which is helpful when drawing that box, at least for these

I don't usually keep the page percentage at 100%. Is there a way to

I see the error of my thinking. The vocals have to be sung into the
machine in order to produce the words, not to mention nuances, etc. So
the choral stave actually would have to be an audio track within the

I know nothing about how a Finale score syncs with an audio track. If

[Finale] Best way to notate this

2008-09-02 Thread Richard Huggins
In an orchestration, I have a 3/4 measure where on beat 2 everyone has
a half note with fermata. I want the snare to roll on beat 2 but not
through the entire fermata. I have snare notated as q rest, q w/ roll,
q note w/ fermata (i.e., roll stops on 3). Of course, there is no
three, practically speaking.

Is this acceptable or how else should I get the desired effect from
the snare if not? And if I merely want the snare to stop rolling,
without a specific strike on the last q, should I tie 2 to 3?
