Re: [Flashcoders] and now..CLIENT now hates Flash

2010-02-03 Thread Christian Pugliese
I second Soren...

Good designers and developers must choose what fits best each website, and
that should have been done by a long time, now things are just going to get
more serious. Flash wont die, not in a near future, html5 badly supports
video tag, there are browser compatibility stuff, there are interactive, etc
etc... Flash people and Adobe just need to learn how to argue better, and
this had happen before.

If apple allows flash on iPad/iPhone, can you imagine how many AppStore
games/apps would be unnecessary because you'd have it online in flash.

[Flashcoders] Loader bytesTotal equals to 0

2008-12-04 Thread Christian Giordano
I've a strange bug which seems on the Flash Player. Basically on
Windows / IE when the page is reloaded, the preloader logs the
progress of the bytesLoaded correctly, but the totalBytes are
incredibily 0. I tried both to check the ProgressEvent or the
loader.contentLoaderInfo itself, the result doesn't change.

I am wondering if anyone have ever encountered in this absurd issue (I
couldn't find anything on the web).

[Flashcoders] Pseudo 3D car games

2008-12-02 Thread Christian Giordano
Hi guys, I remember there is a technique used by some car games, like
I presume here:

http://www.2flashgames.com/f/f-3D-Rally-Racing-4621.htm

Which allows you to have realistic car games without a real 3D engine.

Does anyone remember the name of this technique and have some
information about how to implement it?

Ok, it seems that is due to the white spaces included in the path, but here:

They say in the bug fixed from 2:

In flex3 sdk seems fixed, at least :S

[Flashcoders] Flex 2 SDK command line compiling on mac

2008-01-14 Thread Christian Giordano
Hi guys, I'm moving some AS3 projects from Win to Mac. I work on
Eclipse + FDT and for compiling I used ANT scripts quering mxmlc. When
trying to compile on mac I get:

command line: Error: unknown configuration variable ''

I'm trying all the possible options in the world but the error is not
so helpful.

I added mxmlc to the shell commands and then, as soon as I specify few
parameters, like:

mxmlc '/Users/christian/Documents/workspaces/flash_as3/Tilt
Viewer/src/App.as'
-output='/Users/christian/Documents/workspaces/flash_as3/Tilt
Viewer/bin/tilt_viewer.swf'

and I get the same error.

I tried passing also the -load-config parameter but without help. I
don't know really what to do/think. My mac os x is 10.4.11, any help
would be very appreciated.

Thanks, chr

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash CS3 an Mac - compiler errors with SVN-folders

2007-08-30 Thread christian

Hi,

I have the same problem and it's not a GUI issue ... The problem is
that Flash CS 3 doesn't find any classes - i.e. the document class of
the FLA or classes imported in the timeline. Nobody using the IDE
anymore? ;-)

I hope this helps, as it has helped me in development.

Hi there,

anybody found a workaround for the following scenario? When
checking out larger svn-projects, Flash CS3 on Mac OSX seems to
get confused by the .svn-folders. E.g. it doesn't find classes.
When removing those .svn-folders, everything works fine - but this
isn't an option for working professionally... :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Flashcoders] NetStream.publish record settings

2007-08-13 Thread Christian Pugliese

Hi,

I'm publishing and recording a stream for late playback, thru NetStream
encoding:

var userCam:Camera = Camera.get();
userCam.setMode(320, 240, 15);
userCam.setKeyFrameInterval(60);
userCam.setQuality(144000, 85);

ns.attachVideo(userCam);
ns.publish(camName, "record");

Then, why the saved .flv file has a lower (poor) quality compared to the
one being live streamed?

Shouldn't this be recorded with the same quality it has been published?

This doesn't happen if I encode the live feed thru FlixOn2 or Flash
Media Encoder, both them saves the flv with the same streamed quality.

I had a look to the typical gear example, and I have to say that it
REALLY sucks, comparing to the one I see recently done in Ruby + OpenGL
(here the .exe: http://nuthinking.com/temp/gears.rar).

The code seems fine but it is way too cranky, I'm wondering if it is a
performance issue then. I didn't do the gear in Processing, but I don't
think it can go worse than that.

Then of course all the Math computations (frequently used in 3D) are

If you really want to get into doing 3d viz work, use Java and OpenGL -
and skip Processing unless you just want to jump right in and be able to
see your results faster.

As Jon says, OpenGL could easily be the best solution, or Java3D at
least. Look these examples without opengl:

http://jamesnsears.com/applets/spies/
http://www.acoustic-cartography.com/processing/

Then of course it depends which kind of application u r doing. For the
web, OpenGL can work but as far as I know only with client hacking.

[Flashcoders] HTTPS and IE and Forms...oh my

2006-08-29 Thread Christian
In searching through the archives, I found two solutions for this known
issue, but was curious if anyone else knew of any other solutions.

Basically, I'm looking to submit from data to an https://whatever.com
url and have that URL provide a post back of confirmation. The Swf
itself resides on exactly the same https://whatever.com server, so we
are even in the same directory.

The two solutions I found are:

   - Do it through flash remoting
   - Ensure that the following headers are in place: Pragma:no-cache or
Cache-control:no-cache

The above set up is working fine in pretty much everything but IE, but I
can't even get so much as a Data capture in IE.

Any help would be much appreciated.

[Flashcoders] NetConnection, Load Movie and AOL

2006-07-06 Thread Christian
Yes, three seemingly unrelated things, but I am running into a couple of
issues and was curious about something.

In loading an external FLV using NetConnection (not from FLash Media
Server), I was under the impression that is essentially just pulling the
file via HTTP, not creating a proxy or anything like that. Is this true
or false? The reason I ask, is because in what i am testing, loadMovie
of a swf works fine, but loading the FLV fails.

So this leads me to the AOL part. The NetConnection doesn't seem to
work within the AOL environment because every byte has to go through, in
and out, their servers. So, for some reason, NC isn't working. Has
anyone here ever developed for AOL and run into this problem? If so
what was the work around?

I'm trying to avoid flipping over to delivering video via embedded into
a swf.

ANy help is much appreciated.

2006/6/5, Christian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hey Guys,

So i'm in the process of writing a class that does a lot of JavaScript
handling. The tricky part is, I want to use External Interface for
those files published in 8 and simple getURL calls for those published
in 7 or below.

For all intents and purposes, this is a private class that won't be
exposed to the public, so I can't simply require the user to import
version 8 of class or version 7 of class.

Is there a way to do a conditional import based on published version,
instead of runtime version? I often use $version to detect major
version of play to handle other functionality, but as you all know
External Interface breaks if not published in 8.

OR better yet, could I simply just copy the file to the FP7 folder and
fake it?

Does this make sense or am I smoking crack here?

[Flashcoders] Conditional Import Statements

2006-06-05 Thread Christian

Re: [Flashcoders] geturl:javascript is causing images to not display on IE

2006-05-30 Thread Christian
Hrmmm... I'll have to throw up my test later as getURL:Javascript
doesn't seem to work anymore.

Most of the documentation i'm seeing out there is stating that any file
published in flash 8 doesn't allow for the getURL("javascript") calls.

Is there a security setting that needs to be in place for this to work?

Geoff Stearns wrote:

it still works fine - same as always.

since you are using Flash 8, why not use ExternalInterface to make
the call? in IE that will have the player use fscommand (basically)
and i think your images will stop dissapearing. (or failing to load
as the case may be)

This issue is that I have my SWF in a div, with some divs below it
containing some gif images. When I flush the browser's cache, the
images always display. After subsequent page refreshes (F5), the
images usually don't appear (but sometimes do).

I'm using the SWF to display some variable content, filling dynamic
text fields from passed variables. I can also select from a number
of fonts via a passed var. When the font changes, the div height
needed to contain the stage changes. I created an actionscript
function that passes the new calculated height back to the page via
a javascript call:

function resize() {
  if (allowResize == "true") {
h = Math.ceil(pBody._y+pBody._height)+10;
getURL("javascript:setFlashHeight('wrapper','"+h+"');");
  }
}

The HTML page has the javascript function setFlashHeight() that
resizes the enclosing division for the SWF, via DOM. Like I say,
it all works fine with Firefox, and the HTML and CSS are both correct.

I first suspected a DOM issue, but I later discovered that if I
added a return statement as the first line of the javascript
function, the problem persisted.

If I comment out the getURL call in the actionscript, my
disappearing image problem goes away. So it appears to be a Flash
issue of some sort, which I'm not understanding.

I've Googled around a bit and can't find anything remotely related

Thanks for all the info everyone. Definitely good stuff to go read and

Have you looked into FDS?

When you say: develop the front ends in flash
You mean the Flash IDE?

What makes you think developing in Flex does not allow you to communicate with
any traditional back-end?
Flex Builder is just an IDE. The end result is an swf the same as with the Flash IDE. It's just that an swf published from Flash is
currently a different version.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flex vs. Flash IDE

2006-05-25 Thread Christian
Obviously this may sound harsh, but because the app you wrote was
buggier or harder to build isn't a reflection of the technology in my
opinion. I've been following this thread pretty closely and have begun
going through all the responses. Flex to me has seemed to discredit a
lot of the flash developers out there buy putting advanced functionality
at the finger tips of the average user.

I do think that flex will eventually be leveraged correctly, but the
idea that a whole new IDE must be built simply to build form based
applications is bizarre to me. I have to imagine that the potential for
Flex would extend far beyond Form RIA or else it wouldn't exist. But
then again, that's macromedia for you.

The other issue i see with flex is it's ability to scale. It doesn't
seem to have the ability to handle a ton of simultaneous connections
very well, ala Flash Media Server. Perhaps I'm off base here, but I'd
prefer to develop the front ends in flash and communicate back and forth
with a traditional back-end I.E. ASP, PHP, etc. Those things are free

write the same kinds of classes for Flash that macromedia already built
for Flex, and make it renderable by descriptive XML. It was a fun
project, but I wish I had Flex. It was a very large interactive portal

If so, why? I'm trying to determine if there are any pitfalls of

[Flashcoders] beginBitmapFill makes IDE crash if texture has alpha channel

2006-04-28 Thread Christian Giordano
As you can imagine it is quite difficult to debug, especially because it
happens often (not always) and of course because Flash closes in a mo.
But after hundreds of tests it seems so. It happens during intensive
calculates and if played outside the IDE nothing bad happens. Did anyone
encounter the same issue? Any solution also if of course the important
is what happens outside the IDE?

I have a rudimentary one, but I'm trying to understand what's possible

Re: [Flashcoders] setting properties on a loaded movie clip with a dynamic name

2006-03-28 Thread Christian

create a temporary reference

var myMC = createEmptyMovieClip("_cancelOrder",getNextHighestDepth());

now you don't need currentClip

loadListern.onLoadComplete = function(myMC:MovieClip){
   myMC._visible = false;
}

Did I miss something or is that what you were asking for?

David Farrell wrote:

Hope the title isn't too cryptic!

I need to load a dynamic number of images and temporarily set visible
to false on them.

Simple huh?

well...

I assume I am missing something fairly simple in my process but here
goes:

[code]
createEmptyMovieClip("_cancelOrder", getNextHighestDepth());
loader.loadClip("buttonCancelOrder.gif", this["_cancelOrder"]);
var currentClip = this["_cancelOrder"];
loadListener.onLoadComplete = function(currentClip ):Void {
currentClip ._visible = false;
}
[/code]

Now... in this instance, I could have passed _cancelOrder through to
the onLoadComplete (instead of passing currentClip)- since it is a top
level and predefined var. But seperately in the same script I
dynamically create movieclips with names like "button"+i - so since
there is a number in the title (and an indeterminate number of them),
i need to refer to them in a for loop as this["button"+i]

and you can't pass that through to onLoadComplete - hence I have been
assigning the dynamic movie to a temporary variable

so far so good.

but when I have a number of these loading, often the next clip is
assigned to 'currentClip' before the first one has finished loading -
this means that the currentClip doesn't refer to the movieclip it
should when the first onLoadComplete is triggered.

how do i get by this?

I basically want to load in X images, and then be able to set
different properties / onReleases for each of them - but using the
above, I can't see how to.

It all falls down because the movie clips don't have 'real' names -
but can only be refered to as this["button"+i] and you can't pass that
to the movie loader because of the inline function style.

The only thing I can think of is to do a check to see if EVERYTHING
has loaded, then I could just have a big chunk of code that loops
round everything and sets all the vars - but that's a bit crap!

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

Re: [Flashcoders] 8.5 player and javascript

I am definitely interested in this, because this will be the second
change of how to execute JS calls, with getURL no longer working, I'm
going to be busy writing multiple versions of our tracking classes,
based on the version of publish.

Can't they just pick one, kill the others, and go from there. DAMN YOU!

publishing 8.5+ might fail?

Re: [Flashcoders] overlay swf over swf

2006-03-08 Thread Christian Giordano
The "which browsers support wmode?" issue is a hard one... every now and
then a Macromedia document is rewritten describing what we've seen among
various current browser brands, platforms and versions, along with
varied authoring features (in DIV, with printing, etc), but I know of no
updated third-party reference on the subject... seems like a good
opensource/wiki type of project.

Thanks john for the reply, unfortunately I would like a
crossbrowser/platform solution. So at this stage I think I should find
another way.

[Flashcoders] overlay swf over swf

2006-03-08 Thread Christian Giordano
Since the browsers render swfs in a top layer over the html, and the
last swf updated is the one on top, the style z-index attribute is not
enough to overlay a swf over another. Does anyone know if it is
possible, and maybe how? Googling around I just found swf over html (so
using z-index).

Re: [Flashcoders] 32bit gradient mask performances

possibly then you'd need to create image_bd only once, since it's static.
So create image_bd, mask_bd , picture_bd only once and each frame only
update mask_bd and picture_bd.

sorry, I meant image_pd in the last post, and of course it works for
static movieclips, but not for animated :(

I could I update mask_bd and picture_bd with alphed content without
recreate them, is there a kind of fast clear() ?

Re: [Flashcoders] 32bit gradient mask performances

2006-02-09 Thread Christian Giordano
- draw with draw api a gradient fill in a movieclip (mask_mc),
0x00ff to 0x
- create a new BitmapData (mask_bd) to copy the content of the gradient
mask

- draw mask_mc in mask_bd
- create a new BitmapData (image_bd) to contain the movieclip to be masked
- draw the movieclip in image_bd
- create a new BitmapData (picture_bd) to contain the final result
- copy image_bd to picture_bd using mask_bd as mask

for instance it would be perfect if in the copyPixels I could use
movieclip instead of bitmaps :)

for static movieclips I could avoid to create picture_bd at everyframe
for instance. Any other suggestion?

[Flashcoders] 32bit gradient mask performances

2006-02-09 Thread Christian Giordano
Hi guys, I recently wrote a class to handle this kind of effects in
animation context, so applied to movieclips NOT bitmaps, but when the
masks I handle start to be bigger the performance sucks. It's obvious
but I'm just wondering if there is a better way that the one I'm using.

Here my procedure:

- draw with draw api a gradient fill in a movieclip (mask_mc),
0x00ff to 0x

- create a new BitmapData (mask_bd) to copy the content of the gradient mask
- draw mask_mc in mask_bd
- create a new BitmapData (image_bd) to contain the movieclip to be masked
- draw the movieclip in image_bd
- create a new BitmapData (picture_bd) to contain the final result
- copy image_bd to picture_bd using mask_bd as mask

Of course doing this operation every frame with large images sucks, is
there a way to skip some steps?

Here the actual result:

[Flashcoders] Tabbing inside AS2 UIComponent

2005-11-17 Thread Christian Giordano
In a project I'm supporting a form has been build inside a class that
extends UIComponent (so in AS2, in Flash8, but I had the same problem in
Flash7). I tried in very different ways on implementing the tabbing
inside (using tabIndex, setFocus on killFocus, also with a delay) but
everytime I tab the focus goes out from the textfield but there is no
way to make it come back in another. I presume it is because the
textfields are inside a UIComponent but since I don't usually work with
them I can't be sure. I googled around and didn't find anything a part
http://blog.madebyderek.com/archives/2005/10/20/no_tabbing_for_list_datagrid_and_tree/

but that doesn't help.

Does anyone have an idea on how to handle it?
