Re: SPAM-LOW: [Flashcoders] flash lite on widows mobile

2008-08-14 Thread Phil Bailey

Percy --

It's been a few days since your post, but I just noticed your message.

Our company wanted to develop a Flash Lite application, but we came up
against a huge roadblock. In Flash Lite, there is no way to disable the
tap-and-hold context menu. This means that a user can tap and hold on the
screen and then pause, rewind, fast forward, etc. Since our application
needs to run in a particular order, such user action completely messes up
the application.

In the end, we used Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC in conjunction with a
product named Janus (www.janus-flash.com). Janus will run with Flash Lite or
Flash Player 7, but it will let you disable the tap-and-hold menu for FP7 by
running it inside a form. Apparently, Flash Lite cannot be run from within a
form.

Best Regards,

Hi Flashcoders,

Do you have tips on where to find the best sources of information about
Flash Lite development outside the adobe.com domain?
Or is there a mailing-list, or is Flashcoders the place to talk and
discuss Flash Lite problems and practices on?

Check out the flashlite group on yahoo..

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash Lite - Could someone clarify?

2006-11-06 Thread Mike Krisher

Flash Lite is not available for Blackberry devices. The list of
compatible devices can be found at the Mobile section of the Adobe
site.

There are some Nokia's shipping with Flash Lite installed, however
most of your users would probably have to purchase the developers
version from Adobe and install on their own device.

You may want to look into delivering your content to Blackberry users
via the browser. Blackberry's browser is actually quite good.

Hope that helps,

[Flashcoders] Flash Lite - Could someone clarify?

2006-11-06 Thread Miles Thompson

First of all, apologies for being off-topic, but

I am the IT consultant for ALLnovascotia.com, a daily, online, business
newspaper produced here in Nova Scotia. Subscribers access
ALLnovascotia.com's news service through a Flash movie which provides logon
/ authentication, fetches the news stories and displays them. A series of
PHP scripts service the requests from the movie.

We have been told by some subscribers that "Flash is now available on the
Blackberry", and that is how they would like to read their news.

They may be good businessmen, but they are not necessarily technically
sophisticated. Available it may be, how accessible it is seems to be
another matter.

I have been combing the Adobe Mobile Devices site and looking at various
blogs, trying to figure out how Flash content is delivered on PDA's. These
are the conclusions I have reached:

1) Most of the content seems to be proprietary
2) A Flash Lite player must be purchased and installed on the device. I am
not clear if any owner can do this, or if it is controlled through a
network provider.
3) The network provider seems to control the availability of Flash Lite
content. It does not appear to be like regular Flash content which can be
dished out from any web server.

Are my conclusions right or wrong?

For us, the ideal solution would be to develop a movie which would run on
Blackberry, etc., so that subscribers who have Flash Lite installed could
click on the "Read the News on your Blackberry" link and access it that
way. Presumably this would be a Flash Lite 2.x movie.

Regards - Miles Thompson

Yes - heres the problem with Flash Lite sound:

Native sound is poor - so its fine for game effects, maybe voice sound,
but in terms of music playback I don't think its good enough. However
with native sound you can at least use close to the full memory
available to the FL player.

Device sound is great, even if it does have limited control. However it
consumes double the memory, once to load the sound file and hold it in
memory and then the same amount of memory again to pass the sound over
to the device for playback I am not sure why this is the case but thats
how it is for FL2.0 dev player.

It would be great if FL sound was the same as video where the whole
playback is just forwarded to the device. So there are no FL memory
limitations.

The only saviour would be when, for example, Nokia actually deploy the
player that they either provide 6 or 7 mb of memory for FL2 (unlikely)
or they provide a custom api for music playback. IMHO music (along with
Video) is one of the biggest pulls on mobile so I think it would be a
real shame if the deployed player has the same music limitations as the
dev player.

Cheers

Nick

Due to FL memory limitations you can only really playback maximum 50% of
the available memory - which translates as 1mb in the dev version of FL2.

Hopefully when OEMs deploy the player they will add on some custom
functions or bump up the memory but that remains to be seen.

Dispatch an event from the DeleteRenderer when it's done.
Listen for the event in the parent (or whatever controls the

[Flashcoders] Flash lite - MP3 player

2006-08-15 Thread justin blunk
I apologize if this is not the right mailing list to inquire about this. Can
someone tell me where I could find out some information on using flash lite,
with respect to how a mp3 player could be put on a mobile phone? In other
words, I have a mp3 player made in flash and was wanting to put this on a
mobile phone using flash lite.

Thanks for the help.

Make sure the registration point of the contents getting slapped into the

Happy to be corrected! I only know what I read on Japanese developer's
blogs, and from that I'd formed the opinion that it wasn't worth looking
further.

I am still a little perplexed that the exact model of Nokia phone that's
running FL2 in the States is known to not run it here. All I could gather
was that it was a 'business decision'.

North American is behind the curve, agreed... you'll hear similar

Why? Partly because the early build-out of landlines in North America
slowed the momentum for mobile communication -- there weren't coverage
gaps as in other areas of the world, and so less necessity for mobile
development. Another reason is that North America was an early adopter
of widespread computer use, and so didn't have the necessity for data
development either. "There's no failure like success, and no success
like failure."

Why's it baked into the phones? Because mobiles differ more than
computers, and consumer installation would not be practical.

Where are the operators? In North America Verizon has already announced
planned deployment, and the BREW announcements are now in public beta.

For going back to old formats, that's true -- we've had to refactor
downwards for the less capable devices. This discrepancy will diminish
over time, although there's also pressure for desktop-only stuff like
hardware-assisted rendering, but the goal is to reduce the differences
among device types.

> Why can't they provide a "flash projector" provider for mobile phones?

More and more, people are realizing that they don't want to install
native code from strangers onto their devices. The Adobe Flash Player
provides a sandbox in which safe instructions can run. Trusting
strangers often works out well, but

I agree with you... it's hard waiting for the future to come. At least
we've passed through the Grand Inquisition and the days before indoor
plumbing by now, those were hard times, but there's still a long way to
go ;-)

thats not true - you have to register to be part of their official
portal - which is the same the world over. However you can distribute
content through unofficial portals or through content aggregators
without any operator contact. The key issue with any content provider is
that you need to be able to bill for it - which necessitates some
contact with an operator directly or indirectly.

carriers have total control in Japan which is what makes such a great
development environment for content - you have 2 carriers with
consistent platforms across devices - add to that DRM and you have a
very nice platform for development. The thing with FL over there is that
its used as a very basic content type, so animation and erm
animation rule. There is very little usage beyond that. What is
happening outside of Japan is that the content is completely different -
there will be some cross over where concepts that worked in Japan will
happen outside with FL but I think that will be a very small percentage
of FL content outside Japan.

In terms of FL2.0 timeframes - handsets have a long production
lifecycle, end of story. So the only way FL could be here quicker is if
FL2.0 was created sooner ;)

Well that might be case for Japan but I haven't seen a flash lite
enabled mobile here in Australia. I just went to Europe a couple of
weeks ago and Flash Lite dose not seem to be a big thing there either.
Furthermore, I really can't be bothered developing Flash lite v.1.1.

Well - you could for example create widgets for mobile phones or games.
Or you could use it as marketing tool, similar to a CD-ROM. However you
would download the application via Bluetooth for a Flash lite terminal
...

I think what we need is something like the "Frog in the Blender"
application. I can remember that after this silly flash movie was sent
around as an email attachment people suddenly knew what Flash was.
Obviously we would need something more mature now. My point is Flash
became successful because people can easily create Flash content and it
can be played on almost any computer. But it's pointless to create
content for something, which only exists on the Adobe site or in Japan
(unless you happen to live in Japan)

Hi there,

I think I don't really understand Adobe's policy regarding flash Lite.

First of all how come they talking about flash Lite for ages and I have
not met anybody (besides other flash developers) with flash enabled
mobile yet?

Secondly, why is the player not for free? I mean fair enough Adobe tries
to make money by selling the player to mobile phone manufacturers, but
somehow I think it would be more beneficial for flash platform and Adobe
if the player was for free.

When you go to Adobe Flash Lite page and click on supported devices it
shows you a number of different mobile phones and 95% of them only
support v 1.1. My Nokia 6670 plays flash Lite 2.0 content just fine btw.

I mean what's the point in going six years back to Flash 4 and use this
technology for the latest handsets? I rather wait another ten years than
go back and write Flash 4 code again...

Why can't they provide a "flash projector" provider for mobile phones?
All flash lite applications I have seen so far were standalone
applications anyway. This way people could actually start developing
applications without having to worry if the user has the plug-in
installed.

Don't get me wrong I'm really impressed with the performance of Flash
Lite 2.0 player and its capabilities. Maybe that's why frustrated...

2006-07-14 Thread Eskil Janson

Thanks!

I will check out the lists.

Most phones are not connected to the net, thats why I want to use mms. I
like AS2 but I think the Interactive Object and
Event model in AS3 is more suitable for cross platform development, and
would prefer it for mobile apps if possible.

Best Regards

/Eskil

Hi Eskil,

First of all you might want to consider to join one of the mailign
lists dedicated to Flash on mobile devices. For example FlashMobile
and suhc.

- How do you get a custom icon for your Flash Lite 2 application ?
You would need to make your own Symbian application which will add a
menu icon, and basically has a call which will open your Flash movie
in the default application for the file format/mimetype. You can use
the wizard application such as swf2sis to make such symbian
application for Symbian 2nd edition mobile phones. As far as I know it
doesn't yet support Symbian Series 60 3rd mobile phones.
- Is there a way to attach files (textfiles preferably ) with sms
(mms) from Flash lite 2 ?
You can send SMS files from Flash Lite application, or you can use the
LoadVars-class to send data to a online webserver.

-Will Flash lite have support for AS 3, and if so, when ?

Not yet, it will support AS2 which is already great!

Anyone?

I was so excited about the new features in Flash lite 2 especially loading
external data (swf, jpgs, and xml); I bought a brand new Nokia 6630 to do my
testing, although I have a Mobile Imate Pda!
Now the shocking news is I couldn't load any external data into Flash lite,
neither locally or from a server!!!
I already subscribed to Nokia forum competition, but now stucked into this
frustrating issue!!
Anyone found a solution

Appreciatively

Hi there,

I was trying to download the flash new flash lite player for my Nokia

American products store. Even though I have a Macromedia account the
order form would not accept my Australian address.

How annoying is that? Anybody found a way to download the player outside

It appears that the decision is up to Palm (or whoever owns the Palm brand
now) to agree on a license. Presumably the code for a Palm-based player is
already written, as the Sony-licensed Palm clone had a Flash player
installed on it.

Much like Flash Lite, the player's written and it's now a matter of the
hardware maker ponying up the license fees required to bundle the player
with the device.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash Lite 2.0 phone list

2006-01-12 Thread Nick Gerig

The majority of Non-Nokia devices listed are Japanese handsets with
FL1.1 or FL1.0 preinstalled.

- All the phones that could be supported using the current technology
once distribution deals

with the manufacturers are sorted out

No - any phones there are because the deals have already been done

- All the phones that the current player will run on once the current
testing period

is over.

I assumed FL2.0 is final and only the IDE extension is pre-release
software

- All the phones that the Flash Lite 2.0 player could be ported to if
someone pays

Macrobe to do it.

FL2.0 could be ported to literally any phone if someone pays :)

Which of these applies will make a big difference to the speed of
adoption - if
the current player will be released for all these models in a few
months then
this could become quite big pretty quickly - otherwise its going to
take a while.

The issue currently is that is that although there is a long list of
Nokias that FL will run on, will a player ever be distributed for those
phones? The short answer is that unless the old MM policy has changed
with Adobe - NO! Nokia will distribute the FL player in its emerging
handsets, in fact it has already started in Asia with the N90, most
probably worldwide with the N91 this month. But the older Nokia's will
never get a FL player unless someone pays for it. IMHO this is a massive
hit that only the developer community and consumers take, even if it
does also have a slight impact on the growth of the FL content market
which is still pretty immature outside Japan. The only situation where
older Nokias will get FL2 is where a service provide/operator decides to
license the player for its customers with existing Nokia handsets,
however that is not necessarily a smooth process because each player is
IMEI tied and therefore cumbersome to deliver OTA.

Hope that helps a little.

cheers

[Flashcoders] Flash Lite 2.0 phone list

2006-01-12 Thread Joe Cutting
Well I've installed the Flash Lite 2.0 and one of the more
interesting parts is the long list
of possible "Test Devices". Now it shows you the Nokia ones which are
on the website,
but greyed out there are also about 15 different phone manufacturers
and a long list of phones, including
even some extra Nokia ones. Presumably this is a list of all the
existing Symbian phones.

Now as far as I can see this list could be

- All the phones that could be supported using the current technology
once distribution deals

with the manufacturers are sorted out

- All the phones that the current player will run on once the current
testing period

is over.

- All the phones that the Flash Lite 2.0 player could be ported to if
someone pays

Macrobe to do it.

Which of these applies will make a big difference to the speed of adoption - if
the current player will be released for all these models in a few months then
this could become quite big pretty quickly - otherwise its going to
take a while.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Cheers

Joe

RAM cap is neat!

Well, we should always examine all possibilites, but somehow ;-)

For you, use Labs. Like Jesse said, the download cost for developers is
nullified at the Store, once you get the authoring kit. (I think the
"$10" is there just to reserve a slot in the Store, although I haven't
seen specific documentation on this yet.)

For consumers, we want to get Players embedded in their device
automatically... we don't want lots of consumers trying to install
things on their phones then asking how to do it on their varied devices.
(Free installations into consumers' computer browsers is much easier,
yet still confuses many.) The consumer experience is better when it just
works, when they take the phone out of the box.

Also the store download page before you purchase says: "This product is
not refundable. The player is offered as is." And, you have to give them
the serial number of the phone in order to buy the player. Perhaps for
good reason, but some people are probably going to be concerned with
privacy issues.

The software is keyed to the device type, which is why we need to know
what device they'd like to install into. This is another reason why
there's heavy work on getting standard capabilities embedded into each
device at the factory.

Well, it works fine on my Nokia 6681. Are their any limitations about
the amount of times your can redownload a product from the online store?
Normally I buy my software at TechData to get a nice retail box for on
the bookcloset. Hmm, time to fix my bluetooth on my Windows notebook...

Yep, I can't wait for more previews in this new year :-)

Tried installing it on my N-Gage. No joy. Looks like I'll need to upgrade
phones to use it :(

Wow, they're *selling* the player? Stupid move IMO.

Also the store download page before you purchase says: "This product is
not refundable. The player is offered as is." And, you have to give them
the serial number of the phone in order to buy the player. Perhaps for
good reason, but some people are probably going to be concerned with

So much for penetrating the market any further. Really bizarre.

It's actually free currently if you go through the checkout process, you'll
see it subtracts the full price form the total, equaling $0.

For those of you who haven't seen it. Macromedia/Adobe have announced
the release of Flash Lite 2.0

http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/

As far as I can see this means
- You can now develop Flash 7 content for mobile phones (and maybe
other devices)
- You can download a player for several phones - all Nokia for some
reason but it will cost you $10 per phone
- You can download an authoring externsion for Flash 8 from
labs.macromedia.com (for free I think).

This all looks like pretty good news apart from the $10 player fee
which seems a bit bizarre given that
for flash to beat Java in the mobile world its got to get its penetration
up.
I would have thought a better way of making money would be to charge
for the authoring environment or
player upgrades once the public has got used to Flash on phones.
It is possible that Macromedia/Adobe is offering discounts to phone
companies to bundle the player on their handsets
so that you'll be able to buy handsets with the player ready
installed, but we'll have to wait and see.

Still it all sounds pretty exciting, I might have replace my 5 year
old phone with a new Nokia now...
