Re: Printing
I noticed something odd in testing the code available on macromedia.com on how to print the entire contents of a datagrid. It works if you leave the default printer settings alone, but if you change to have the report printed landscape-wise, it doesn't work anymore. It stops at the point where you can see up to on the screen and doesn't print past that... Also...is there any way to change the font size when printing a datagrid? I have the fontWeight style set to bold for all contents of my datagrid, which is relatively wide, and when I print the datagrid using the script, the font is rather large on the page and the columns, when the print job shrinks the column width to fit it to the paper width, the contents in some of the cells is too large and is replaced with a vertical scrollbar, making the report illegible for some of the cells. I've tried added a setStyle (fontSize, 6) call before the pj.send() is called and then resetting the fontSize afterwards and I see it visually happening on the screen, but it holds no bearing on what's sent to the printer. Just was wondering. Thanks, Rob

advice on drag n drop
Hey guys. So I got a data grid that I enabled drag and drop to easily allow users to position the items. And that works. However the previous functionality I had was that when you click on a row a pop-up happens that let's you edit the details. The problem now is that when you drag a row, the pop-up happens and it also does the dragging and dropping. The first thing that comes to mind is to make a cell renderer that acts like an edit button, so you have to click on aspecific column which has a button in itto edit an item.But... what I'm wondering is if it's possible to only do the popup ( as a result of this: change="editQuestion(event.target.selectedItem)"), if no drag occured. Like a dragIncomplete=... kinda thing. I dunno. :)Thx!
RE: [flexcoders] advice on drag n drop
Maybe you could use the cellPress event on DataGrid as some form of click indicator and then add double-click support. If you get the double cellPress in your time period thatd be the indicator to pop your editor. We have double-click on a button described in a technote: http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19242. Re: [flexcoders] passing a view to a command
Interestingly this is always the case in Aral's view-helper-less ARP framework - because the view itself (not the EventBroadcaster singleton) broadcasts the event, the controller uses the target property of the event (the view) to call methods to update the view. I had a talk with Aral after MXDU, was interesting to compare his approach with view helpers. It increases the encapsulation of views, but on the face of it seems to reduce the isolation that a view helper introduces between the commands and the view. It also becomes more important to bubble UI events to the right level in the views to broadcast the event to the command, otherwise the command won't have reference to a view that provides the necessary methods to carry out the command's view update requirements. It should be added that when Aral uses ARP with Flex he never puts code in the mxml, as you would with a flash view he keeps his UI code in a class file for each view - so the exact skin of the view can be modified independently of the code. To my mind that's a little excessive - expressions in bindings are to me are a key part of Flex's RAD value proposition. I'm thinking of trying out ARP style views with Cairngom (that would make it Carp?) to get more of a handle on the pros/cons of the two approaches. Cheers, Robin On 23/02/2005, at 6:25 AM, Mehdi, Agha wrote: Yeah, you can do that. EventBroadcaster.getInstance().broadcastEvent( myCommand, this ); Why would you do it that way though? You can register a view with its viewHelper and than your command can use ViewLocator to get that helper that talks to your view. RE: [flexcoders] Calendar component
It would have been nice if that was the native behavior, but, as I was showing, adding custom behaviors like that to a component is pretty easy. It probably took me less time to put that example together than it would have taken to describe it at as feature request. Honestly, i think the freely type-able date field (like my new component has) will do far more for a person entering their date of birth than a button to navigate years. I'd personally rather enter the 10 keystrokes for my DOB, than have to click a back one year button 35 times. At 01:01 AM 2/24/2005, you wrote: Hi Jeff This surely is a useful piece of code but don't you feel that this should have been a facility of the original date component. FlashComm Flex - LiveMediaDisplay - Streaming Problem
I am currently building a FlashComm and Flex application to do the following: I am building this app. Based on Christophe Coenraet and Matt Chotin's LiveMediaDisplay class and sample application. How it should work: If Person A logs in, he can see his stream and Person B's stream. When Person B logs in, he can see his stream and Person A's stream. Users can only log-in based on one of two names: PersonA or PersonB. Depending on your login, I publish your name (PersonA or PersonB) as the streamName (see webCam.as). After you log-in, I set the streamNames to both of these known names (see app.mxml). What's wrong: When Person A logs in, he can see his stream and Person B's stream, which is correct, be selecting the stream1() function or stream2() function. When Person B logs in, he can ONLY CHOOSE between his stream or Person B's stream. He can always get one OR the other, but never both. Notes: I have removed the userList and chat sections. Learning to connect actionscript pages to mxml pages
I am trying to teach myself how to make an mxml page and connect it to an action script page. To do this I am trying out the simplest program possible. I will show you all the code I have written for both files and what I did was just make a simple mxml page with no extra code and linked it to an action script page with what I believed to be the correct syntax. Here is the mxml file: ?xml version=1.0? mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml; width=1738 height=1412 xmlns=* brandnewas id=bna bnaview={this} / /mx:Application Here is the .as file I am trying to link it to // ActionScript Document class brandnewas { public var bnaview:Object; public function brandnewas() {} } The error message I have been getting is that an mxml tag must be embedded within an application tag to either run or debug it. I also get an error message at the bottom for the mxml file that says in the description Expected an attribute value[xml] I am confused for a few reasons one being I thought I had an application tage around the brandnewas tag, and two I am not sure what var needs the attribute value?

form validation
Im having a heck of a time understanding how form validation works. I have a formit contains text fields, drop down lists, and radio buttons. Its a basic user information formfirst name, last name, address 1, address 2, etc. I also have 3 fields: phone, fax, and mobile, but I only have the phone fieldas being required (visually, anyways, utilizing the required attribute set to true of the mx:FormItem component, but set to false for fax and mobile). Ialso have phone, fax and mobile being monitored by the mx:PhoneNumberValidator components. But the problem is the form wont submit if the user hasnt entered a fax or mobile, even though theyre not required but becauseI have validators on them. Is there any way to ONLY validate them if the user has entered a value in their fields and not enforce them as being required even though I dont have them flagged as being required? Also, how do I validate whether a userhas selected an option from a drop-down or a radio button group? I am successfully setting their values to the data model I have set up but do I use a StringValidator on those values to ensure something has been checked or is there a better way to do that? I looked at the examples in Stephen and Alistairs book but some things arent valid in Flex 1.5 anymore and other things just confuse the heck out of me or dont apply to the type of form Im trying to build and validate. Any help on any of these things would be most amazingly appreciated. Thanks! Re: [flexcoders] How to get the number of rows in a Tree or TreeDataProvider
Its a bit hackish, but you could try something like this: function openTree(t:mx.controls.Tree):Number { var i:Number=0; var node:mx.controls.treeclasses.TreeNode=t.getTreeNodeAt(i); while (node != undefined){ if (t.getIsBranch(node) ! t.getIsOpen(node)){ t.setIsOpen(node, true); } i++; node=t.getNodeDisplayedAt(i); } return i; } This will open all the nodes, and return the total number of nodes throughout the tree. You'd have to work it a bit more to do this and not open them all. Re: [flexcoders] How to get the number of rows in a Tree or TreeDataProvider
Hows this for an alternative if you want the count, but dont want the tree to be opened. I've only tested this with small trees, I'd fear for its performance in larger trees: function countClosed():Number{ var num:Number = openTree(nav); closeTree(nav,num); return num; } function openTree(t:mx.controls.Tree):Number { var i:Number=0; var node:mx.controls.treeclasses.TreeNode=t.getTreeNodeAt(i); while (node != undefined){ if (t.getIsBranch(node) ! t.getIsOpen(node)){ t.setIsOpen(node,true); } i++; node=t.getNodeDisplayedAt(i); } return i; } function closeTree(t:mx.controls.Tree,numNodes:Number){ for(var i=0;inumNodes;i++){ var node:mx.controls.treeclasses.TreeNode=t.getTreeNodeAt(i); if (t.getIsBranch(node) t.getIsOpen(node)){ t.setIsOpen(node,false); } } t.selectedIndex = null; }
RE: [flexcoders] How to get the number of rows in a Tree or TreeDataProvider
I modified that while loop to just do a count, and it works fine, with the added benefit that it only counts the nodes that are open, which is really what I need. Thanks! public function getTreeVisibleRowCount(treeControl:Tree):Number { var treeDP = treeControl.dataProvider; var i:Number=0; var iVisibleRowCount:Number = 0; var treenodeCur:TreeNode = treeDP.getTreeNodeAt(i); while (treenodeCur != undefined){ if (treeControl.getIsOpen(treenodeCur) ){ iVisibleRowCount ++; } i++; treenodeCur=treeControl.getNodeDisplayedAt(i); } return iVisibleRowCount; }//getTreeVisibleRowCount -Original Message- From: Jeff Tapper [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2005 1:27 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] How to get the number of rows in a Tree or TreeDataProvider Hows this for an alternative if you want the count, but dont want the tree to be opened. I've actually never used it before this project. -Art Quoting Tracy Spratt [EMAIL PROTECTED]: The Sample code for printing from a DataGrid posted on the MM site under the url below does not work: http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?event=viewid= KC.tn_19241extid=tn_19241 It is close, it is actually putting the data into the page, but still only the visible area prints. Robert, I just tried that example and it does not work either way for me. The data and paging is correct, but only the screen/visible area prints. Did you discover anything? Tracy -Original Message- From: rbrueckmann78 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 7:06 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Re: Printing I noticed something odd in testing the code available on macromedia.com on how to print the entire contents of a datagrid. Thanks, Rob Yahoo! Groups Links
change row´s text
Hi coders I have this problem now. I need to change text displayed in a row of datagrid depending specified row value. Other thing that I don´t know how do, is to prohibit to users to be able to change the columns width.

Other thing that I don´t know how do, is to prohibit to users to be able to change the columns width. RE: [flexcoders] Learning to connect actionscript pages to mxml pages
That will only work with a pure AS file, not a class. It is a true include, and is functionally the same as putting the script directly in the main file. The class approach, while it makes references a little harder, is better since it helps to avoid the 32k limit. It is possible to have static class, instead of instantiating it, but I am not quite sure how to do that. RE: [flexcoders] Sample code for printing from a DataGrid:doesnot work?
Tracy, Its funny you send this email because I posted something about printing last nightI am using the same exact code youre using from the example on MMs site and I would say it works intermittently, at best, when I try to print my datagridat first, if you read my post from last night, I thought it was only when I tried to print it in landscape, because the first few times I tested it, it was actually working in portrait but when I switched the landscape, it stopped printinglike you said, it printed the correct number of pages but only the visible content was printedthen I tried to print again in portrait layout and it stopped working in that format as wellvery strange behavior. The whole printing functionality in Flex is very weak and is sort of the bane of my existence at the moment being as the application I developedis a reporting application. Right now, as terrible as it sounds, I tell the users to launch the PDF version of the report theyre viewing and use that to print anything they wantthing is not everything in the application is available in PDF formatmaybe Flex 2.0 will come around to thisI really hope so anyways. Ideally, if they could provide a mx:FlashPaper component for Flexnow THAT would be the epitome of awesomeness. Im going to continue to investigate this, as I hope you and Art will to and maybe we can come up with something collaborativelybecause there doesnt seem to be a quick fix to this conundrum. RE: [flexcoders] Sample code for printing from a DataGrid:doesnot work?
Hi All, Well so far my printing has made me go baldlol but seriously. I have got it to print a header on one page the datagrid contents on another page, and my footer on the last page. Not fun at all. I for what the server costs you'd expect better functionality than this. Little things like this make clients unhappy and in the end MM looses because if this issue doesn't get taken care of quick this will really hinder the future of Flex. Hey Matt! I agree with Robert. there should be some kind of mx:FlashPaper tag for v2.0 of Flex. that would make my day. also could you look at my print function located in this email below and help me get a headder on each page w/ a footer on the last page? thanks, -Art Quoting Robert Brueckmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Tracy, It's funny you send this email because I posted something about printing last night...I am using the same exact code you're using from the example on MM's site and I would say it works intermittently, at best, when I try to print my datagrid...at first, if you read my post from last night, I thought it was only when I tried to print it in landscape, because the first few times I tested it, it was actually working in portrait but when I switched the landscape, it stopped printing...like you said, it printed the correct number of pages but only the visible content was printed...then I tried to print again in portrait layout and it stopped working in that format as well...very strange behavior. The whole printing functionality in Flex is very weak and is sort of the bane of my existence at the moment being as the application I developed is a reporting application. Right now, as terrible as it sounds, I tell the users to launch the PDF version of the report they're viewing and use that to print anything they want...thing is not everything in the application is available in PDF format...maybe Flex 2.0 will come around to this...I really hope so anyways. Ideally, if they could provide a mx:FlashPaper component for Flex...now THAT would be the epitome of awesomeness. I'm going to continue to investigate this, as I hope you and Art will to and maybe we can come up with something collaboratively...because there doesn't seem to be a quick fix to this conundrum. Re: [flexcoders] dateField questions?
Alf, It means you intend to access to any datefield field in your application from a generic function in an external AS file, don´t you?. In this case, the argument should be the Datefield id: getCurrentDate(myDateFieldId); function getCurrentDate(myArg) { var myArg;// it must be the id myArg.selectedDate = new Date(); } The id. must be unique. To access to a field in a .mxml file from an external file, you should specify the complete path from the Application tag. For example: main.mxml - mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml; xmnls:myNameSpace=*.. myNameSpace:sample id=sample .. /mx:Application sample.mxml --- ... mx:DateField id=inputDate dateFormatter=formatDate / The path to this datefield is: mx.core.Application.application.sample. inputDate Isaac Bibás Forado [EMAIL PROTECTED] m Para: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com cc: 23/02/2005 22:01 Asunto: Re: [flexcoders] dateField questions?
