[flexcoders] Flex Module for IIS and Apache
Hi, I am wondering if anybody has tried to install the flex module for IIS Apache here. I tried it on my mac with apache, but I could not get it to work. I had some problems installing it, and I wonder if anybody could offer some help. [flexcoders] Mistake on Adobe's Page for Flex builder?
Hi, I just checked the adobe's education page for Flex Builder, and it says that it cost $99.00? I am a student at the University of Hawaii. Before I get too excited about it, is this a mistake? I am totally newbie, and trying to get flex to work without flex builder is difficult for me. I know that FB helps in getting you up to speed with flex, and so I hope that this is not a mistake on the pricing. Also, I tried to get flex and ColdFusion to work together, but with no luck. Andrew, Going smoothly now. [flexcoders] Cant get consumer Subtopic or Selector to work and its driving me crazy
I've tried every example i've found dealing with flex messaging to filter the messages i'm sending from a coldfusion component to flex. When I use the selector tag, no matter what I put in the message always goes through. And with the suptopic its just the opposite, no matter what I put in the messages never get through. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Cheers!

[flexcoders] Programming Challenge - finding nodes in an array with a value near a number
So I've got a programming challenge.
I've got audio/video streaming in, and I've got an XML document
converted to an Array (each node is an index of the array), each
value in the array in the contains a cuepoint in Ms.
What's the most efficient way to find the cuepoints in the array
which are within range (with a fuzziness of say +/- 50ms) of the
current position of the playhead on my audio/video?
At the moment I've simply got a for (var i:Number = 0; i
cuePoints.length; i++) {}
That's not really a robust way to check the array of cuepoints for
matching values of the current media's playhead position - as the
more cuepoints in the array, the lower the chance is of finding
matches accurately.
So to reiterate - say my media's playhead is at a position of 2300Ms.
My swf is 30FPS - and in my onEnterFrame for the mediaplayer in that
SWF I check to see if there are any cue points (with values of say,
2250, 2300, 2325) within range of the current playhead position.
I'm hunting for the most efficient way to achieve that.
I've got some ideas - which will work ok - but this has to be a
common programming challenge - and there has to be a more efficient
way than a loop through an array reading all cue point values that
are within range of my current playhead's position.

[flexcoders] Urgent call for Flex Portlet (Flex Taglibs) specialists (James Ward, help!)
I have tried and tried, fried my brain, and I am desperate. I firstly wrote a simple portlet and tried to present a flex page on JBoss portal, unsuccessfull because of the - java.lang.NullPointerException at flex.server.j2ee.cache.CacheKeyUtils.generateJspCacheKe (CacheKeyUtils.java:68) OR generateSwfCacheKey(CacheKeyUtils.java:54) if I try to show the mxml file directly, without going through the taglib. - error. Then, with effort, learned how another portal server works, I inastalled and configured Jetspeed 2, and after trying just about every trick in the book, had to give up and realised the same - java.lang.NullPointerException at flex.server.j2ee.cache.CacheKeyUtils.generateJspCacheKey (CacheKeyUtils.java:68) - error haunting me. I have a simple, yet urgent requirement, I need to make Flex applications available as portlets, on (prefferably) an Appache opensource portal server. PLEASE will SOMEONE help me?! I'll send my JBoss and / or Jetspeed 2 installation, zipped, so you can have the full config and everything I have done, I'll send the MySQL databases for these portal servers, ANYTHING, just say what you need. The only common denominator is that both these portal servers are based on Apache Tomcat PLEASE PLEASE ASSIST.

[flexcoders] Overriding a read-only property
Hello, I need to modify the percentRect property (e.g.; x, y,width,height of percentRect) of DownloadProgressBar class. I have a class that extends the DownloadProgressBar class. But within my class (the subclass), assigning any value like percentRect.x=150 doesn't work as percentRect is a read-onlypreperty. I've also been having serious problems with tree nodes: auto-expanding child nodes and setting (highlighting) a selected node. MyTree.validateNow() was the answer to getting all of this working. One thing I can't seem to fix though is the background colour of the swf when it is loading. At the moment you get a grey flash as the prelaoder works then the background goes white. That's a toughie. We haven't made that easy to do. I know others have tried it. Not sure if they finished or gave up. I think you have to set horizontalScrollPolicy=on and set up the scrollbars in createChildren. Hi, I've run into an issue where, after loading a module, calling CursorManager.setBusyCursor() inside that module causes an exception (Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference). The same happens with Alert.show (in PopupManager.createPopup). First I moved the setBusyCursor() call into a button click(), to be sure the module had loaded completely - but this had no effect. If, however, I call setBusyCursor() then removeBusyCursor() in the /module loader/ mxml file (on ready event), the module button can then also set the cursor without error. Similarly, an Alert in the module loader (on ready event) allows alerts within the module. To muddy the waters further, if I load the module at the start of the application, it works okay - it's just when I re-load it that the error starts occurring. While a problem for me, I find the following behavior fascinating and
inexplicable; so here's a good challenge for any Flexlock Holmes out
there (full code is below - 26 lines, fairly simple):
I have a DataGrid that's using a RemoteObject as its dataProvider, and
I initialize the 'visible' propery of its first dataGridColumn to
false. On startup, this column (labelled Name) is hidden - so
far, so good.
Next I click my GetData button to invoke the RemoteObject's service,
and poof! The column becomes visible - even though the debugger
verified that its visible property remains false!
So now I click my HideName Button, which forcibly sets the visible
property of this Name column to false. The debugger verifies that
its false before I click it, and its false after I click it. Still,
the column remains visible.
So just for the heck of it I click my ShowName Button, which
forcibly sets the visible property of the Name column to true. The
debugger verifies that the value is changed to true - and as an added
bonus, it increases the width of the Name column from 50 to 100! Okay...
Finally, I click the HideName Button, and *this* time it works - the
Name column is now hidden, having worked only after I forced its
visible prpoerty to true immediately beforehand.
I can replicate this ad nauseum (calling the RemoteObject service
makes the hidden column visible without setting visible to true;
forcing the visible value to false works only after forcing it to
true), but it only happens when the dataProvider is remoteObject, and
the forcing of the visible value only shows the column when done via
Buttons (it does not work directly in code right after calling the
RemoteObject service).
Full code is below. I tracked every single Name column variable
through the debugger, and nothing changes, except for visible and
width as noted above. I did track down the moment that the ShowName
button expands the column width (in Button.as, line 2050, function

Hello,
I would like to copy a number of attributes from one element to a second
element, but I can't find a way to achieve it
To set the scene, something like
var x1:XML = x1 a1='a1' a2='a2'/;
var x2:XML=x2/;
for each (var a:XML in [EMAIL PROTECTED]) {
[EMAIL PROTECTED] = a;
}
Obviously the code above does not work, and in the situation I would
need it, the input elements and attributes are not known at compile
time.
Does anyone know if it is possible in a generic way to copy attributes
from a first element to a second using E4X and how to do it?

I thought it would be easy to use DisplayShelf to display something other than pictures. I tried to make it display a custom component of mine, which displays some info using various standard flex components, like VBox,HBox,Label the root component being Canvas. Anyways... The very first item displays in full... except for my styles are not applied... though they look like they are applied to the reflection part of the item! I can the colors and even drop-shadows in the reflections :) The remaining items all have their text components (Label) truncated! Instead of: Monday, 25th Feb, I see Mo... with the full text in the tooltip!!! Is it possible to use DisplayShelf component to display any custom components instead of Images? Where are it's weak points? And, where are it's strong points of course. Also, because I've been working on getting it to this point, I haven't had time to make some tutorials. There is quite a bit of documentation over here http://www.rubyamf.org . That has basics of starting the server, services location plus much more. I have more work to do to get it into beta, and completely supporting windows with LightTPD and mongrel as well. So if anyone has any time to check this out, and help out, write some stuff. The user selects items on the left from each slider by just clicking on them and they appear on the right list. The right list keeps the users' order, even as the user adds/removes items. I did this using a compiler directive which changes the blue-grey to whatever you want, including the preloader etc. You change the properties of your project and add the colour you want to use. [flexcoders] [Apollo] Slow rendering of maps
I was running the Maptacular application and I noticed that the map tiles was loading very slowly than it would on a browser. Also, the images seem to be ghost-imaged in the window, I mean, while you pan there images don't refresh quickly. Is there a downside to trying to loading images with Apollo? Or is it just a performance problem that will be looked into? ~sree

Thanks, Michael - this initially didn't work, but it made me realize
why some previous attempts of mine also failed: since RemoteObject is
my dataProvider, I have to wait until the (asynchronous) call to this
service completes, before doing any overrides in code after the
service call; my earlier attempts changed the visible property
immediately after the code line that invoked the RemoteObject - i.e.,
I had assumed the call was synchronous.
So I set the result property of the RemoteObject to hideName(),
with hideName() declared as follows (same thing your code does):

myDataGrid.columns[0].visible = true;
myDataGrid.columns[0].visible = false;
}
There's still an annoying screen flicker (as the column is very
briefly visible), but it's a workaround. Glad to also hear that the
next patch will fix this.

makes the hidden column visible without setting visible to true;
forcing the visible value to false works only after forcing it to
true), but it only happens when the dataProvider is remoteObject,
and
the forcing of the visible value only shows the column when done
via
Buttons (it does not work directly in code right after calling the
RemoteObject service).
Full code is below. I tracked every single Name column variable
through the debugger, and nothing changes, except for visible and
width as noted above. I did track down the moment that
the ShowName
button expands the column width (in Button.as, line 2050, function
focusOutHandler), but I don't know enough about Flex yet to know
why
that would enable column hiding; or why the call to RemoteObject is
revealing my invisible column in the first place, for that matter.
Started out just wanting to hide some DataGrid columns, but went
pretty far down the rabbit hole. Thanks for any input!

I've heard several difference rumors/myths about the performance of using XML with E4X in AS3. I was hoping I could get some more real-world feedback from the folks here. We're considering two options: - return XML from REST web service, parse into value objects (using E4X), store VOs in model, databind VOs to view, edit VOs, serialize back to XML, invoke REST web service to update - return XML from REST web service, store XML in model, databind XML to view, edit XML, invoke REST web service to update Are there major perf differences between the two options? Are there other reasons to go with one vs the other? Since Cairngorm promotes the usage of VOs, I'd been originally heading down that route, but then started feeling like we could get everything we need with E4X and native XML. Thoughts/comments? I am building an application using the excellent Flex 2 Chart framework. I have currently an issue when I drag and drop a flex chart in IE using Javascript. In order to pinpoint the issue,I created a simple demo with 2 charts samples from Adobe. now the issue is whenever i turn off a columns visibility and then turn
it on again the same column's width size decreases.
if i repeat this several times on the same column the width gradually
decreases.
after hours of wracking my head round i noticed that this anomally would
only occur if my datagrid has a set width(mine is set as a percentage)
otherwise without setting the width the toggle works fine.
is this a bug or is there a way to restore the hidden column's width
when shown?

We're building a new column object by writing AS code like : newColumn.dataField = columnObj.dataField; newColumn.wordWrap = columnObj.wordWrap; And we push this onto the columns array and that works fine. But how do i say that i want the header renderer for the new column to be the one that's defined in cmpHeader.mxml in the current directory? First, bigImage.source={data.piclink}; will not work. You cannot
use binding braces in AS code.
Second, where is the data object you reference in that line?
I suspect you really want something like:

work. When I hard-code the following in my thumbChanged method, it
works...well if loading the same image no matter what thumb you click
means it works LOL:

this sort of thing, I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing

You pass values into the swf loading in the FlashPlayer using flashvars. If you are using the wrapper generated by Flex Builder, then look at the code of that html. You will see that the Flash Player is actually intantiated in code in a .js file, in order to avoid the IE7 click to use prompt. All yo need to do to add your values is to add/edit the flashvars line in the call to the AC_FL_RunContent() function. Here is one of mine: flashvars,'dataSourceUrl=' + _sDataSourceUrl + 'assetsUrl=' + _sAssetsUrl + '', If you are writing your own html wrapper, use similar techniques on your own. Editable renderers must be driven from the dataProvider. Then, you can loop through the dataProvider, test for the value of the selected property, then put the data into the array. the end, but your code makes a lot of sense...I couldn't figure out
how to deal with the XML part considering I was trying to grab it
from somewhere else, and then throw it somewhere else:

Also, in effort to homogenize my efforts, I also made the 2
different HTTPService XML files (galleriesData.xml
and 'alltheindividualgalleries'.xml) E4X with attributes per node as
opposed to many nodes, and the logic is much more clear now. I'll
post what I have when I get home:)

If I choose any option, the dispatchFilter function will filter the
data based on the option criteria, and it's not what I want, what I
want is the URL defined for the HTTPService so I can load a new XML
file on the fly. What I think I need is a different change= function
to do that. Hopefully, this is not too confusing. Thank you again

Is anyone else experiencing issues accessing LiveDocs for all Adobe technologies today? So far, I am having issues with CF and Flex. I am receiving page not found errors and strange loading of the docs. I did a Google and can't believe that if it is the case, we have not been notified somehow. -LIR

[flexcoders] data grids and font formating
Data grids are very column oriented it seems but i need to do more work with indivuidal cells and rows. I want the text of certain parts of a row to be different for a different value depending on the user input.(i.e lets set the value 1 means arhived i want the whole row to become italized.) I have been messing around with text formating but does anyone have any sugstions on what to do

now the issue is whenever i turn off a columns visibility and then turn
it on again the same column's width siz! e decreases.
if i repeat this several times on the same col! umn the width gradually
decreases.
after hours of wracking my head round i noticed that this anomally would
only occur if my datagrid has a set width(mine is set as a percentage)
otherwise without setting the width the toggle works fine.
is this a bug or is there a way to restore the hidden column's width
when shown?

[flexcoders] Converting AS3 class into XML
Hi, I need to convert an AS3 class into XML based on all the public/private properties that the AS3 class has. However, I have not been able to find a way or any API that allow me traverse through all properties that a class has. This should be a generic way that can be applied to any AS3 class. I did look at the XMLTools.as file written by Michael J. Prichard. However, it seems to work with AS2 only. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Regards, Tung Chau

Hello All, What is the proper way to bind Data to a DateField? I ask this, because I get an error when I bind a Variable contained within a ValueObject (which contains a Null Value), to a DateField Control. Is it safe to say, that this DateField doesn't act like a TextField? Do I require a regular Variable cast as a Date to serve as a go-between, when transferring the ValueObject data to the DateField?
