I have to say that I do not remember seeing in this discussion that in the context of FrameMaker MIF stands for Maker Interchange Format (i.e. Maker, not Model). When I used FrameMaker (last time was with 7.2) I used MIF to clean FM files, and also for FUN! For example, by editing MIF files

You could also try SciTE Text Editor. It's free open source, and works for many programming languages and HTML. It has lots of nice features, especially for a free program. You can mark all instances of a certain phrase and press F2 to go from one to the next. I use it as a regular text editor
