Re: missing fonts

2007-06-21 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

If you save the file as MIF and search that, then you got a flat file
(Document, Master Ref. pages all in one), easy to search -- and
replace -- in a fairly good text editor (TextPad, ConText, jEdit,
etc.).

Re: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Art Campbell

David,

This comes up often enough that it should be a FAQ; there are reams of
information in the archives here and in the Adobe FM User Forum (where
there's a full discussion; I think Adobe may have issued a tech note).

Near as anyone can figure, one known problem is a combination of
Windows and Frame font handling. Try this:

Find the C:\WINDOWS\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT file and note its size. Then
delete it. Reboot the system; the font cache will be rebuilt. Don't
open other applications, especially browsers that may hit the font
cache. Print the file to PDF.

If that clears the problem, you may want to look at reducing the
number of fonts on your system, especially the CJK fonts. By most
reports, if the FNTCACHE.DAT file tops 2,000, the bug surfaces. The
fix will work for a while, but will need to be repeated unless you can
remove enough fonts to get below whatever your system's threshold is.

One thing we are seeing is that the postscript file size is considerably

Links in framemaker source files to PDFs?

2007-06-21 Thread Van Boening, Tammy
All,

I have a directory structure on my hard drive that is going to be burned
verbatim to a CD. In this structure, I have a Framemaker file that I
want to contain links to the PDFs that are contained in various
directories throughout. I want these links to jump to the indicated
PDF when I click on the link in the framemaker file and have the PDF
open (I also want to convert the framemaker file to a PDF so that when I
click on these links in the PDF, the same thing happens).

I know, I know - this has been covered so many times before, but I am on
a tight, tight deadline and the archives are hard to search. Like I
said, the absolute path of the framemaker/pdf file to the various pdfs
will remain the same when I burn to CD, so. . .

How do I need to set up my links in the Framemaker file and is there
anything special that I need to do to the PDFs?

TIA,

RE: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
I'll endorse Art's response here! And both add to it and
refine it a tad ...

There are two distinct sets of missing text scenarios
that we know about.

The first such scenario is a associated with larger page
sizes and higher resolutions. As you go beyond US Letter
and A4 paper sizes, field overflow associated with intermediate
byproduct of the product of multiplying a page location by
the resolution can readily overflow a 16-bit signed field
and cause the location of text or other graphic objects
to go negative (off the page). This scenario is totally
repeatable between systems if you use the same settings.
The cure is to either cut the resolution value (as you
can readily do with printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript
printer driver instance or by cutting the page size.
Generally speaking, the former is easiest and safest (esp.
when creating PDF). Lowering the resolution down to 300dpi
only affects microspacing for line justification.

The second scenario is as Art describes it. We have heard
of customers experiencing it on some systems but not others
using allegely the same document and configuration. We
have even seen internally at Adobe, but cannot reproduce
it at will. On most systems, deleting the FNTCACHE.DAT file
followed by a reboot will solve the problem, at least for
a while. I have suggested that systems with this problem
be fitted with a logout script that automatically does this
delete every time you bring down your system and thus
proactively avoid repeats. Note however, I have heard of at
least one system for which this hack did not work.
Why does this happen? And why does deleting the font cache
fix it? Don't really know! It has nothing to do with Acrobat
or the Adobe PDF PostScript driver instance. Since application
programs, including FrameMaker, do not and cannot directly
access the FNTCACHE.DAT file, I can only guess that whatever
is causing this is the byproduct of FrameMaker having its own
character set and of its use of old Windows GDI calls for
display and print.

Note that from our experience, the number of fonts on a
system doesn't seem to be a common vector for this
problem to occur. I typically have more than 1400 typefaces
installed oncurrently on each of my systems and for better
or worse, I'v never been able to duplicate the problem
on these systems!

We will need to see whether the next major release of
FrameMaker resolves the problem once and for all! :-)

RE: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
Jacob,

Good to hear from you.

(1) No, I wasn't referring to leading but rather the
exact positioning and amount of space between text characters
on a line of text. Obviously 72dpi is going to look very
poor. I normally recommend a setting of 600dpi for all
layout work (and then always creating PDF with the Adobe PDF
PostScript printer driver instance set to 600dpi) to assure
no reflow problems - a big problem with Microsoft Office and
probably much less of a problem with FrameMaker (Shlomo says
he has seen this; I haven't so far). I do not advise going
below the 300dpi setting. For most FrameMaker type documents,
any fine spacing quality loss at 300dpi compared to 600dpi
or 1200dpi would normally be quite acceptable.

(2) So far we haven't seen the NUMBER of fonts as the key
variable as to what causes corruption or too large a
font cache file. As I have indicated in early communications,
my systems routinely run with about 1400 to 1600 active
typefaces, all concurrently installed.

One area that I would have others look at is the size of
the virtual memory file. Disable automatic paging files
and enable a constant paging file size of at least twice
the amount of real memory in the system which in reality
means a four to six gigabyte paging file. I am only
speculating about this, but you never know.

(3) With regards to the GDI calls, FrameMaker's code still
uses very old (Windows 3.x) GDI calls that are very resolution
dependent and that can yield multiplication results that
overflow 16 bits if you are talking about higher resolutions
and larger page sizes. As I indicated there is a known problem
due to these overflows that cause text drop out on systems
that don't suffer from the problem fixed by the font cache
deletion hack. (For example, this problem is consistent on
all systems for page size tabloid for 2400 dpi for the
same document!) The other problem occurs when this overflow
should not be a problem. The problem is that the GDI calls
used by FrameMaker are not really being maintained by Microsoft;
it's likely that there are bugs that have infested that area
of the code that are somehow tickled by FrameMaker and its
interesting remapping of character sets. But we really don't
know what is causing the problems.

(4) Because we can't debug problems we can't reproduce,
this whole issue is exceptionally frustrating not only to
the limited number of customers who repeatedly experience
it on particular computer systems, but also to the FrameMaker
support and development organization.

 Hi Dov,

Normally I don't argue your statements, but sometimes
exceptions exists and require a tiny dialog:

 You wrote:
... Lowering the resolution down to 300dpi only affects
 microspacing for line justification.

First, I'm not completely sure what you mean when you
say line justification. My mistake, but if you mean
leading I don't think of this as a problem. However, if you
mean character spacing I don't believe your statement is
 entirely correct.

In my judgement lowering resolution (in printer
properties, which I assume you refer to) to anything less
than 1200 dpi WILL affect character spacing output from
FrameMaker. If you try with 72 dpi and compare the result
 (e.g. in a PDF) with a similar 1200 dpi result I'm sure
you'll agree. Often, but not always, you'll find serious and
very visible spacing artifacts in the 72 dpi result.

Hence, generally I'd hold my horses and keep resolution
up, at least to 600 dpi.

 You wrote:

I have worked with this issue weeks and weeks to find a
reasonable and reproduceable scenario, since several of our
Grafikhuset Publi PDF customers ask us for advice.
Unfortunately, we haven't found a bullet-proof answer so far.
The best we have to answer is

 (1) Reduce the number of fonts to a minimum.

 (2) Delete the FNTCACHE.DAT file and reboot.

This problem has definitely nothing to do with Acrobat

Formatting rules in EDDs

2007-06-21 Thread Adam Schweitzer
Hi all,
I'm having a problem with formatting rules in an EDD - particularily,
with the combination of two character formats acting on the same text.
We use a tag called emphasis to indicate when text should be bold,
italicized, superscript, etc. and another called change to indicate
when text has changed since the last release of the manual. In the EDD,
text formatting rules apply a character format to these elements.

All works well, except when there is an emphasis element within a
change element. In this case, it seems as if the two formatting rules
conflict, and we lose the emphasis formatting.

We were able to get around this in the past by simply re-applying the
tag (ie. highlight the emphasis or change, select the same from the
element catalog and choose change), which would apply the proper
formatting. This is no longer possible, as we're now using conditional
text, and each time we change what is shown in the document, the
formatting reverts, and we again lose the emphasis formatting.

I'm a bit puzzled here - because when we re-apply the tag manually, it
is my understanding that the formatting comes from the EDD.. and the
same for when we change conditional text settings. To have the same EDD
produce different results doesn't make a lot of sense - unless (for some
reason) the rules are applied in a different order in these cases,
leading to the emphasis rules being overwritten.

The only solution I can think of is a framescript which would go and
reapply these tags everytime conditional text settings are changed - but
that seems to be a when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like
a nail type solution.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

RE: Some questions about importing/resizing screenshots

2007-06-21 Thread Nina Rogers
Hi all,

Would you believe, I've figured out the answers to all of my questions
that I posted a couple of hours ago. I guess that's one of the benefits
of being a tech writer-I know that if I play with the software for a
while, I'll eventually find what I'm looking for!

Thanks.

Subject: Some questions about importing/resizing screenshots

Hi again,

Many thanks to all of you who responded to my request for FM Crash
Course resources. Your input has been of tremendous help. And I'm sure
many of you will be glad to know I've (mostly) been able to find
information I need, rather than firing off questions to this list every
two minutes!

But now I have a question about graphics. In Word, I would just Insert
Picture From File and the selected screenshot would appear in Word as
the same size (in inches) as the actual screenshot, and then I would
adjust the size to fit as needed. In Frame, I can't figure out how to
make an imported screen shot smaller without turning the screenshot text
into chicken-scratch. Should I be saving these screenshots into a
particular format? (I'm using FullShot for screenshots.) I was using
GIF, then switched to JPG ... but I must admit that my knowledge of
graphics formats is very limited. (I miss the days when I worked
side-by-side with a graphic designer!)

I am copying the screenshot files directly into the document, not
importing by reference. This manual will be seen in two forms by the
users: as a print manual (if they ever open it, ha ha), and as a PDF, so
I'd like to go with a graphics format that would be good for both.

Also, I'm using a template that has a side head. How can I make it so an
imported screenshot will straddle the two columns (of the side head
and body paragraph). I wasn't planning to have it do that, but I want to
be able to have the option, in case I'm using a large screenshot with
lots of text on it.

Thanks!

visio fonts don't show in FM

2007-06-21 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,

I have visio drawings embedded in my FM files that include the symbol
font, to show, omega, delta and sigma symbols.

The symbols show properly in the Visio embedded object, but do not show
in the FM or the generated PDF.

I realize that FM is not reading the fonts correctly. Is there a way to
fix this?

I need the words in the figures to be searchable. The symbols don't have
to be searchable, and if I must I will create some type of drawing of
the symbol and insert it as a pic. But, I would rather save myself this
extra effort. If any of you can tell me what make FM tick and tell me
how to fix this problem.

I'm running FM 7.2 on Windows XP.

Thanks,

Orly Z.

SV: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Jacob Schäffer
Hi Dov,

Normally I don't argue your statements, but sometimes exceptions exists and
require a tiny dialog:

You wrote:
... Lowering the resolution down to 300dpi only affects microspacing for line
justification.

First, I'm not completely sure what you mean when you say line
justification. My mistake, but if you mean leading I don't think of this as
a problem. However, if you mean character spacing I don't believe your
statement is entirely correct.

In my judgement lowering resolution (in printer properties, which I
assume you refer to) to anything less than 1200 dpi WILL affect character
spacing output from FrameMaker. If you try with 72 dpi and compare the result
(e.g. in a PDF) with a similar 1200 dpi result I'm sure you'll agree. Often,
but not always, you'll find serious and very visible spacing artifacts in the
72 dpi result.

Hence, generally I'd hold my horses and keep resolution up, at least to
600 dpi.

You wrote:
We have heard of customers experiencing it on some systems but not others
using allegely the same document and configuration. We have even seen
internally at Adobe, but cannot reproduce it at will.

I have worked with this issue weeks and weeks to find a reasonable and
reproduceable scenario, since several of our Grafikhuset Publi PDF customers
ask us for advice. Unfortunately, we haven't found a bullet-proof answer so
far. The best we have to answer is

(1) Reduce the number of fonts to a minimum.

(2) Delete the FNTCACHE.DAT file and reboot.

You wrote:
Note however, I have heard of at least one system for which this hack did not
work. Why does this happen? And why does deleting the font cache fix it? Don't
really know!

We have tested with a debugger and tried to nail down memory leaks in
FrameMaker. No *significant* such beasts seem to exist with FrameMaker. Bravo!

You wrote:
It has nothing to do with Acrobat or the Adobe PDF PostScript driver
instance.

This problem has definitely nothing to do with Acrobat nor the Adobe
PDF PostScript driver instance. It occur during PostScript creation via a
combination of GDI, GDI+ and the universal Windows PostScript printer driver --
system components each of which are very hard to point out as direct offenders.

And the problem -- when it's present -- occur whenever you print
directly to a physical high-res device, PostScript or 'Save as PDF'.

You wrote:
Since application programs, including FrameMaker, do not and cannot directly
access the FNTCACHE.DAT file, I can only guess that whatever is causing this is
the byproduct of FrameMaker having its own character set and of its use of old
Windows GDI calls for display and print.

Hmmm ...

Typical for Windows GDI calls are the differences in resolution between
display and print. That is, in fact, a major -- if not the only major --
difference between the two device contexts, by concept.

So, why can FrameMaker display stuff it can't print at any resolution?
And why does lowering resolution sometimes help? I don't know, but I'd love to.

You wrote:
Note that from our experience, the number of fonts on a system doesn't seem
to be a common vector for this
problem to occur. I typically have more than 1400 typefaces installed
oncurrently on each of my systems and for better or worse, I'v never been able
to duplicate the problem on these systems!

Sorry, but I'd be quite surprised if you personally produce anything
significant in FrameMaker, i.e. build from scratch/work with hundreds and
hundreds of pages spread out in multiple chapters forming a book. Opening
documents on a test basis may not reveal enough information to establish beyond
doubt what's going on.

In my view the strict cause is pending and -- apparently -- unknown,
and that is a serious problem.

You wrote:
We will need to see whether the next major release of FrameMaker resolves the
problem once and for all! :-)

I wish you folks at Adobe a good hunt added all the luck you can get --
for all of us :-)

Does anyone have an EDD for the Bible?

2007-06-21 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I think you must all be hinting that the final EDD will be rock solid!
 ;-)

Actually the last joke about the tablets fits in Icelandic too. I may
even have heard it with God as the adviser -- which also gives a
deeper meaning to the joke.

missing fonts

If you save the file as MIF and search that, then you got a flat file
(Document, Master Ref. pages all in one), easy to search -- and
replace -- in a fairly good text editor (TextPad, ConText, jEdit,
etc.).

Slightly OT: Style checker?

2007-06-21 Thread Yves Barbion
I'm looking for a style checker tool that dynamically checks whether
DITA-structured text complies with terminology databases and style
guides. Something that does the following:

Original: "Choose Print from the File menu to print the doctor's contact
details. A dialog appears. Click on the Print button."

Corrections suggested by the style checker: "Choose *File *> *Print *to
print the *physician*'s details. A dialog box appears. Click *Print*.",
where:

* "doctor" is replace with "physician" to comply with the
  terminology database.
* The syntax is changed ("Choose File > Print...") to comply with
  the company style guides.

These are the basic feature requirements. It would be really nice if the
style checker can do the following too:

* Check multilingual terminology databases
* Check multiple style guides in order of a user-defined preference.
For example, check Microsoft Manual of Style first, then the Apple
Publications Style Guide and, if there's a conflict, give
  preference to style guide A.

Kind regards

I highly recommend FrameScript: A Crash Course by Rick Quatro (yes, the
same Rick Quatro who responded to your earlier post). It's available from
www.frameexpert.com. I tried writing my first FrameScript script using just
the reference material shipped with the product and failed miserably.
Rick's book got me started on the path to success.

Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread David Spreadbury
We are running into a similar problem since upgrading to Acrobat 8 from Acrobat
7.

We purchased the CS3 set, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat.

When we create a Postscript file from FrameMaker 7.2p158, the PDF has random
missing text. Sometimes complete pages, othertimes maybe a few words in a
sentence.

Of four systems, three are experiencing this problem.

We have completely removed Acrobat from these machines and reinstalled. I say
completely because we let Windows delete the Acrobat instance through Control
Panel, then manually removed all instances of Acrobat 8 from C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat.

Then reinstalled Acrobat from the CS3 DVD. Problem remains.
One user when so far as to install Acrobat 7, instead of Acrobat 8, problem
still exists.

I have deleted the AdobePDF prineter instance and manually created it.
Problem still exists.

One thing we are seeing is that the postscript file size is considerably
larger when the PDF fails.

  4,285 is a good PDF
  4,940 is a corrupted PDF.

  Any have any ideas???

Please respond directly as I am on Digest.

Update all files in a Book with a Paragraph Format?

It's not at all clear what you're doing -- a revision number needs
changing, so you change a paragraph format? Are you using the autonumber
string of the pgf format to hold your revision number? That's not a good
idea. As Karen noted, that's what user variables are for.

Your description of "importing" formats doesn't sound like importing
formats. Even with your non-variable approach, manual changes to master
pages and pgfs aren't necessary -- if you actually import your change at
the book level, all the files are updated in one step.

Do this: Create a variable called RevisionNumber, define it with your
current revision number, and insert the variable into the Revision pgf
on your master pages (get rid of Revision's autonumber, if that's what

Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

Update all files in a Book with a Paragraph Format?

2007-06-21 Thread Art Campbell
As Karen and Richard point out, a different way to do this would be to
use a user variable.
However, updating either the 'graph you're using or the variable would
require the same procedure: Change the rev number either in the 'tag
or the variable, save that "source" file; highlight all book component
files that should be updated, and then do Import Formats... and
specify either variables or paragraph tags.

2007-06-21 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
You can also use Esc v,P. There's a document called
Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf that is installed with FM that describes
how to add your own shortcuts. I added Esc b,b,b for following a
cross-reference back by adding to:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\fminit\configui\cmds.cfg
You add the new sequence directly after the old one (with a space in
between), by searching for the old key sequence. In this case, it is

I'll second Beverly's and Chris's advice to check out Rick Quatro's book
and online tutorials. I also recommend buying his Super Web Bundle of
scripts because (a) they perform a broad range of tasks and may take
care of a good portion of your scripting needs as is, and (b) they serve
as examples and starting points for developing your own scripts.

That said, the OP didn't know that FrameScript adds a menu to FM -- that
suggests that the OP hasn't even spent much time looking at the
information at the Finite Matters website, much less the documentation.
Also, the OP mentioned downloading the trial version. It's necessary to
request an evaluation license from Finite Matters (this is explained on
the website). FrameScript won't work without a license key; maybe that's
the reason it's not working.

I want these links to "jump to" the indicated

TIA,

default import dpi?

2007-06-21 Thread Yves Barbion

I think there is, but I forgot.

Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
I'll endorse Art's response here! And both add to it and
refine it a tad ...

There are two distinct sets of "missing text" scenarios
that we know about.

The first such scenario is a associated with larger page
sizes and higher resolutions. As you go beyond US Letter
and A4 paper sizes, field overflow associated with intermediate
byproduct of the product of multiplying a page location by
the resolution can readily overflow a 16-bit signed field
and cause the "location" of text or other graphic objects
to go negative (off the page).

We have heard
of customers experiencing it on some systems but not others
using "allegely" the same document and configuration. We
have even seen internally at Adobe, but cannot reproduce
it at will. On most systems, deleting the FNTCACHE.DAT file
followed by a reboot will "solve" the problem, at least for
a while. I have suggested that systems with this problem
be fitted with a logout script that automatically does this
delete every time you "bring down" your system and thus
proactively avoid repeats.

Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
Jacob,

Good to hear from you.

(1) No, I wasn't referring to "leading" but rather the
exact positioning and amount of space between text characters
on a line of text.

(For example, this problem is consistent on
all systems for page size "tabloid" for 2400 dpi for the
same document!) The other problem occurs when this overflow
should not be a problem. The problem is that the GDI calls
used by FrameMaker are not really being maintained by Microsoft;
it's likely that there are bugs that have infested that area
of the code that are somehow tickled by FrameMaker and its
interesting remapping of character sets. But we really don't
know what is causing the problems.

(4) Because we can't debug problems we can't reproduce,
this whole issue is exceptionally frustrating not only to
the limited number of customers who repeatedly experience
it on particular computer systems, but also to the FrameMaker
support and development organization.

- Dov

Formatting rules in EDDs

2007-06-21 Thread Adam Schweitzer
Hi all,
I'm having a problem with formatting rules in an EDD - particularily,
with the combination of two character formats acting on the same text.
We use a tag called "emphasis" to indicate when text should be bold,
italicized, superscript, etc. and another called "change" to indicate
when text has changed since the last release of the manual. In the EDD,
text formatting rules apply a character format to these elements.

All works well, except when there is an "emphasis" element within a
"change" element. In this case, it seems as if the two formatting rules
conflict, and we lose the emphasis formatting.

We were able to get around this in the past by simply re-applying the
tag (ie. highlight the emphasis or change, select the same from the
element catalog and choose "change"), which would apply the proper

The only solution I can think of is a framescript which would go and
reapply these tags everytime conditional text settings are changed - but
that seems to be a "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like
a nail" type solution.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Adam Schweitzer

Some questions about importing/resizing screenshots

2007-06-21 Thread Nina Rogers
Hi again,

Many thanks to all of you who responded to my request for "FM Crash

many of you will be glad to know I've (mostly) been able to find
information I need, rather than firing off questions to this list every
two minutes!

But now I have a question about graphics. In Word, I would just Insert >
Picture > From File and the selected screenshot would appear in Word as
the same size (in inches) as the actual screenshot, and then I would
adjust the size to fit as needed.

How can I make it so an
imported screenshot will "straddle" the two columns (of the side head
and body paragraph). I wasn't planning to have it do that, but I want to
be able to have the option, in case I'm using a large screenshot with
lots of text on it.

Thanks!

Some questions about importing/resizing screenshots

2007-06-21 Thread Nina Rogers
Hi all,

Would you believe, I've figured out the answers to all of my questions
that I posted a couple of hours ago. I guess that's one of the benefits
of being a tech writer-I know that if I play with the software for a
while, I'll eventually find what I'm looking for!

Thanks.

Subject: Some questions about importing/resizing screenshots

Hi again,

Many thanks to all of you who responded to my request for "FM Crash
Course" resources. Your input has been of tremendous help. And I'm sure
many of you will be glad to know I've (mostly) been able to find
information I need, rather than firing off questions to this list every
two minutes!

But now I have a question about graphics. In Word, I would just Insert >
Picture > From File and the selected screenshot would appear in Word as
the same size (in inches) as the actual screenshot, and then I would
adjust the size to fit as needed.
(I miss the days when I worked
side-by-side with a graphic designer!)

visio fonts don't show in FM

Thanks,

Orly Z.
