RE: FIles of old FM versions

2006-08-23 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi everyone,
If I'm not mistaken, for that technique to work you must have at least one
document open in Frame. It can be a new blank document.

Hi, Klaus:

Do you see any messages when you try to open the file?

FrameMaker 7.x can read FrameMaker files as far back as 4.x, I believe.
Your file may be corrupted. One technique that might help is called
OpenHeroic. This bypasses FrameMaker's validation checks that are usually
performed when opening a file. You perform it with these keystrokes:

* Tap and release Escape
* Tap and release lowercase o
* Tap and release uppercase H
* Locate the file in the openFile dialog box.

How to get really old FM versions (set of diskettes)?

With a virtual environment or an old Windows 3.1 machine some
bootstrapping

Do you know of other means to read an old FM file?

Well there still is the problem of reading it physically (a diskette

BTW does anyone know the details of the header information? What does
the

Thanks for your ideas

Color questions

2006-08-23 Thread Scott White
I have two cmyk images that I copied into Framemaker 7.2 on the PC. They are
both made by Makita. Makita's color is a teal/aqua color.
One image looks teal/aqua in color like it should, however, the other image
looks blue/green like the coral reefs in the Caribbean. In photoshop the
images are not the same density of -- the good one is darker in nature than
the bad one.
Why does Frame display like this? Is there a fix in Frame? In photoshop I
can fix the image but its time consuming and a lot of trial and error.
The bottom line is I have a client who doesn't want to send his files out to
the printer but print them on a color printer. Thus his images do not all
look correct when printed on the business printer.
Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

New Distiller Settings

Capturing a certain view of a document in FM

2006-08-23 Thread Stephen O'Brien

Hi...I'm looking for a direction in which to go...

Documentation: in FM 6 books I make use of text insets (by reference)
and variables, both being affected by conditional text.

Situation: Must provide FM files for translation (German, Japanese...).

Problem for translation: text insets with conditional formats
imported by reference, variables in a document controlled by
conditional format -- hard to translate from English (no gender, etc.)

Solution: (conceived after discussion with client and translation
firm) transform the user variables and text insets to simple text
using proper conditional formats in a copy of the book...(done, using
a script).

Question: When I open a FM document, I see just what I need. And when
I print that to PDF, that's what gets printed. ANy way to print that
to ... another FM document...or capture that view (what I can see) in
a FM format? I ask the question because this conversion to text to
ease the translation, while operating well and quickly, is like
working hard to see what FM shows me an opening the book . Am I
missing something?

Thanks...it's like I can't see the forest for the trees...got a chain saw?

sure that 'leave heading rows empty' is not checked.

Hi,

Add the variable called Table Continuation after the text in the table
header. It won't show unless the table breaks, and then only on not-first table

Re: New Distiller Settings

2006-08-23 Thread David Flynn

Hi Jeniffer,

Here are some my methods of resolution of this problem:

1. I hope you have
  (a) Rendered the Standard or whichever .joboption file you use as a
non-read-only file. Only then will you be able to save your settings for
future and subsequent use without having to change them again.

  (b) Made your settings and then marked the joboptions file read-only
again. Please search for this file if you cannot find it. However, I haven't
needed to becasue when you press the save as button, the window pop-up
allowing you to save this file is actually the windows explorer at the
backend so it allows you to perform rt-click, properties, readonly checkbox.

2. The second resolution to this problem is more to do with Framemaker. Any
version.
By default, Framemaker to PDF conversion is done via a imaginary printer
(port). The broker file maybe a prn file or essentially a postscript or .ps
file. Now it is this ps file which can be read by Distiller to be rendered
into a PDF. Okay now in english, You need to set the PDF Writer 7.0 or the
Adobe PDF printer as your default printer in Framemaker. Do check up on
http://www.leximation.com/ where u can look for a printer plugin which
enables you to set this printer by default so evertime you invoke Adobe
framemaker 7.0, this printer is set as your default printer.

Once you have done this you may be able to Save As... PDF However, this
feature is slightly unstable at times so it is advisable to simply print
your PDF as a .PS or a .PRN file and then invoke this PRN /PS file into
Distiller (accessible via Start button) and a simple drag drop into
Distiller will render a PDF for you with the images.

I hope this solves your problem.

Please do inform me if this doesn't solve you problem.

Thanks,

RE: Table heading rows

2006-08-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
Oof, that really is the hard way to do this, particularly if you've
done any work tweaking the table format (e.g. adjusting column
widths) because all table formatting is lost.

The conventional way to do this is to use the Add Row or Column
command to add an empty heading row, then to cut and paste
the contents of each pseudo-heading cell to the corresponding
true heading cell one at a time, then to select and delete the
original pseudo-heading row. Yes, it's kind of a PITA.

If you have to do this frequently (e.g. if you have a lot of tables
that originated in Word, since the heading row property is not
imported from Word into FrameMaker), you'd be well advised
to buy Rick Quatro's excellent TableCleaner plug-in which
(among quite a few other things) can individually convert a
body row to a heading or footing row with a single command
or can globally convert a specified number of body rows to
heading rows for all tables of a particular format. TableCleaner
is probably the single most useful plug-in I have in my toolbox,
but that may just because much of my content originates in
Word.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

RE: Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

Hi,

Text which has a condition applied and is hidden is not
imported into Trados.

However table rows which have a condition applied and are
hidden do get imported.

At least that's what I noticed with our translation agency
half a year ago.

As a work-around you have to assign the condition also to
the text in such table rows.

 Dear all,

this is not a pure FM problem but here it is: are conditional

I'm currently writing procedures to repair hydraullic motors.
 The client has

different depending on the size of the motor, but not totally
 different. My
idea was to use conditional tags (1. big motor size ; 2.

We have to translate these documents into several languages

You must have experienced this in the past... Any help appreciated!

2006-08-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

Thank you all very much for your suggestions.
Solutions were:

o 2 separate translations:
  - Convert to HTML, get it translated and convert to
HTML Help.
  - Convert to Word, get it translated and create a PDF.
Thus the online help will still be context sensitive.
The second translation will cost money but in the era of
translation memory systems hopefully not to much.

o Convert to XML, get that translated. Then:
  - Convert the XML to HTML via XSLT.
  - Convert the XML to PDF via LaTeX.

o Convert everything to InDesign. However then I don't
  have an online help.

o Mess around with the registry to get FrameMaker to
handle right to left languages. Seemed to be only a
  solution for 2 page documents.

No-one suggested a converter from Word to HTML Help.

Best regards

Winfried

 Hi,

probably in the next year we have to translate a
FrameMaker book into Hebrew and Arabic and also
convert the translation into an HTML Help. As FM
cannot handle right-to-left languages I plan this:

1 Convert the FM book to Word with Mif2Go.

2 Get the Word file(s) translated.

3 Convert the translated Word file(s) to HTML Help.

Does anybody know a suitable converter? What about
WebWorks ePublisher Pro für Word? Does anyone use
it already? Can it handle Hebrew or Arabic?

What do you do when you have to translate into
Hebrew or Arabic and convert into an online help?

Thank you very much for your help

RE: Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

2006-08-23 Thread Martinek, Carla
I send docs with up to 50 conditional tags to my translation companies.
Any conditions that are set to 'show' within the Frame file when it is
prepared as .mif are made available for translation through S-Tagger.

If you have a translation vendor who is telling you that you cannot use
conditional tags, then you need to find another vendor who understands
the abilities of Trados.

Subject: Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

Dear all,

this is not a pure FM problem but here it is: are conditional tags
handled by Trados's extension S-Tagger for FrameMaker?

I'm currently writing procedures to repair hydraullic motors. The client
has large powerful motors and smaller ones. Repair procedures are
somehow different depending on the size of the motor, but not totally
different. My idea was to use conditional tags (1. big motor size ; 2.
little motor size).

We have to translate these documents into several languages later, but
i've been said not to use conditional tags, because Trados do not handle
them.

You must have experienced this in the past... Any help appreciated!

Mathieu.

RE: Table heading rows

2006-08-23 Thread Steve Rickaby
Steve Kubis' new Table Tools plug-in also has a command for table heading rows.
Here's what the documentation says:

'Table Tools provides the Fix Table Headings routine that examines the tables
in the document. If a table doesn't have any heading rows defined, it will ask
the user whether the first row of the table should be converted into a heading
row.'

No cutting or pasting required.

Although I don't know your process, Match Color works for me in
similar situations quickly and easily...

Welcome to the (hellish) world of colourmatching. Fussing with the colour
on screen is virtually meaningless. If the two are supposed to be the
same, they SHOULD be the same. If they are displaying differently, they
undoubtedly are different and do need edited in image editing software.

As for what exact colour is shown on screen and what is printed, well it
depends on the strengths, weaknesses, and settings of each device (whether
screen or printer). On a printer, the output will be affected by what
paper and processes are used.

If the colours used are selected using Pantone numbers or other matching
system, you have the basis for the expectation that the final printed
output is identical to the Pantone swatch. If the printer and media have
been correctly colour matched. If the colours are being designed on-screen
and you want your output to exactly match the on-screen colour, you have
to colour match and adjust the display before doing colour work, colour
match the printer, and know what the colour limitations of your devices
are.

A Plugin for scrubbing files before localization

2006-08-23 Thread John Posada
Hi, guys...we're getting ready to send some files out for
localization and our L10N company asked us to prep the files by
removing anything that isn't used in each file; anything being
defined as P and C tags, table definitions, cross-references,
variables, conditional settings, etc. If it can be imported through
Import - Format, and isn't used in the file, scrub it out.

I'm not asking for input on whether this is a good practice or not
and I have no input into the process anyway.

My question has to do with seeming to remember a plugin that did
this. Does anything about this sound familiar?

Gillian - there may be a slicker method, but one thing you can do is convert
the table to text, then back into a table, specifying a heading row and making
sure that 'leave heading rows empty' is not checked.

New Distiller Settings

Thanks,

the contents of each pseudo-heading cell to the corresponding
true heading cell one at a time, then to select and delete the
original pseudo-heading row.

TableCleaner
is probably the single most useful plug-in I have in my toolbox,
but that may just because much of my content originates in
Word.

Gillian - there may be a slicker method, but one thing you can do is
convert the table to text, then back into a table, specifying a heading
row and making sure that 'leave heading rows empty' is not checked.

Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

2006-08-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

Text which has a condition applied and is hidden is not
imported into Trados.

However table rows which have a condition applied and are
hidden do get imported.

At least that's what I noticed with our translation agency
half a year ago.

As a work-around you have to assign the condition also to
the text in such table rows.

Best regards

Winfried

Translate FrameMaker book to Hebrew/Arabic and convert to onlinehelp

Winfried

Table heading rows

2006-08-23 Thread Steve Rickaby
Steve Kubis' new Table Tools plug-in also has a command for table heading rows.
Here's what the documentation says:

'Table Tools provides the Fix Table Headings routine that examines the tables
in the document. If a table doesn't have any heading rows defined, it will ask
the user whether the first row of the table should be converted into a heading
row.'

No cutting or pasting required.

FIM (foot in mouth) here :-( Just goes to show that you can learn something new
about FrameMaker every day - I'd always assumed that the 'Add Rows or Columns:
to heading' option wouldn't work if there was no heading to start with. Sheesh.

Color questions

2006-08-23 Thread Art Campbell
Scott,

It sounds as if you're asking why FM displays the images accurately,
given that you've already identified one as being off in Photoshop.

Is Match Color not working for you in Photoshop? In theory, it should
be able to coordinate the two images' blue/green tones to match.
Although I don't know your process, Match Color works for me in
similar situations quickly and easily...

Cheers,

Converting Mac 6 Russian doc to PC

2006-08-23 Thread Jerrilynn
Hello,
I tried searching the archives but didn't find an answer there. I have a
couple of documents that are currently Macintosh Framemaker 6 and need to be
converted to Windows. I've tried several things but not getting the correct
characters. I have Trados available to me and tried running a MIF back
through there but still have corrupted characters. Somewhere I still need an
encoding conversion. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

If it can be imported through
Import -> Format, and isn't used in the file, scrub it out.

I'm not asking for input on whether this is a good practice or not
and I have no input into the process anyway.

My question has to do with seeming to remember a plugin that did
this. Does anything about this sound familiar?

Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

2006-08-23 Thread Martinek, Carla
I send docs with up to 50 conditional tags to my translation companies.
Any conditions that are set to 'show' within the Frame file when it is
prepared as .mif are made available for translation through S-Tagger.

If you have a translation vendor who is telling you that you cannot use
conditional tags, then you need to find another vendor who understands
the abilities of Trados.

Dear all,

this is not a pure FM problem but here it is: are conditional tags
handled by Trados's extension S-Tagger for FrameMaker?

I'm currently writing procedures to repair hydraullic motors. The client
has large powerful motors and smaller ones. Repair procedures are
somehow different depending on the size of the motor, but not totally
different. My idea was to use conditional tags (1. "big" motor size ; 2.
"little" motor size).

We have to translate these documents into several languages later, but
i've been said not to use conditional tags, because Trados do not handle
them.

You must have experienced this in the past... Any help appreciated!

Deleting color definitions

2006-08-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
Well, if they are spurious colors with names like
RGB Color 255, 255, 255, saving the file to MIF and then
re-opening it in FrameMaker (or using the "Wash via MIF"
command that comes with the Mif2Go tool) will scrub them
out in one operation. But if they are real color definitions, I
think you may be stuck with the one-at-a-time method or
seeing if it can be scripted via FrameScript.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.
