Subject: Creating bookmarks, more and top links in FM
Importance: High

Hello

I use FM 7.0 to create the User Guides and Automap to convert the guides to
HTMLs. Our FM template is mapped with the Automap template. My queries are:

1. How do I create a static H1 heading in FM so that when it is
converted to html the main heading remains in focus while one scrolls down
the page to browse through the contents/sub-headings in the specific
section?

2. Since some of the sections are very verbose am keen to create a
more.. or Top link to expand/collapse the sub and sub-sub-headings or to
move to the previous section in the file. How do I do this in FM?

3. How do I create bookmarks in FM files? Am aware that it can be
created in pdfs but not aware as to how it can be done in FM. Not sure
whether it will require a Bookmark plugin to create the same in a FM file.

Any help on the above issues is appreciated.

Regards,

Jaya Ghosh

Re: structured import and pgftag fonts

2006-10-12 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Noah,

I am not sure what is causing this by try this after you import the XML.

1) Choose File Import Element Definitions.

2) Leave Current selected in the Import from Document popup. Check the
Format Rule Overrides checkbox and click Import.

Hey all,

I'm having a very strange problem with my structure application. When I
import an xml file, none of the fonts follows the paragraph tags(which are
assigned by the edd, they show up just fine in the pgftag bar and menu,
but
the fonts just don't apply for some reason). They seem to be inheriting
the

font information from the root element instead.

However if I just insert an element manually the font follows the pgftag
correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Noah

Not sure.

Again, not sure. We have release guides that sport a table of short
descriptions on page one, and a More... link to take the reader deeper into
the doc for the rest of the feature's write-up.

3. How do I create bookmarks in FM files? Am aware that it can be

I think you are talking about the Named Destination feature for Hypertext
links in Frame. To add one:
a. Place cursor at the destination point.
b. Click Special | Hypertext... | Command: Specify Named Destination
c. Type a name for the destination.
d. Click New Hypertext Marker.

If you already know this, and are asking something completely different ...
then I apologize. If you get the answers to your first two questions, please
share them with the list.

RE: Creating bookmarks, more and top links in FM

2006-10-12 Thread Charles Beck
Hi JG,

I do not have a totally definitive answer for your questions (I think),
and I wonder if anyone else does either, which may be why you have not
heard anything.

The short answer is that I do not think it is possible to do the things
you want to do in Frame. Certainly not easily, in any case.

For questions 1 and 2, it *might* be possible--and I strongly stress the
word might--to use the HTML Macro marker, which inserts HTML code into
your output document as is, to do what you want. Be warned though:
Internet Explorer does not easily support statically positioned elements
of any type (Firefox and Opera do much better). So, even if you can get
the desired HTML code in your documents, there is no guarantee they will
work correctly in IE.

For question 3, the best thing I can suggest (maybe someone else can
offer something better) is to create a cross-reference to the desired
location in the documentation. But I am a little confused as to what you
mean by the term bookmark in the context of FrameMaker. Bookmarks make
sense in PDF files, because you have the navigational pane on the left.
They make sense in HTML, because you can use a browser to set and use a
bookmark. But I am not sure how you would want to use a bookmark within
the context of FrameMaker. It doesn't seem to make sense to me. Am I
missing something?

HTH, but afraid it won't,
Chuck Beck

RE: Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer does not make links

2006-10-12 Thread Ridder, Fred
Oops, just noticed that you are using PDF Writer. That's the
problem, right there. PDF Writer is a quick and dirty PDF
creation tool that does not produce hyperlinks. To get links
in your PDF, you must use a method that uses Acrobat
Distiller (printing to the Adobe PDF printer, printing to
a PostScript file and distilling, etc.) and you must use the
setting I mentioned in my previous response.

Re: Creating bookmarks, more and top links in FM

2006-10-12 Thread Brian Weis

Charles is correct ... the Cross-Reference feature will serve you much
better than inserting Specified Destinations as I mentioned earlier.

The great thing about X-Refs in Frame is that they are completely tied to
the paragraphs style, you can control how the reference appears, and they
are easy to update.

This has to do with the display settings of the PDF file, which could be
set to Single Page or Continuous, or Default (in which case, the
local user preference, either Single or Continuous, is used).

Both settings may be useful, depending on the type of PDF and intended uses.
The continuous mode is essential when you want links and bookmarks to
scroll the page so that the target location is automatically placed at the
top/left corner of window (rather than just taking you to the destination
page). This may be highly useful, for example, when you have links in index
pages -- in a single page mode you'll be taken to the page when clicking,
but you may need to do some exploration to find the specific target.

In any case, FrameMaker does not let you specify the PDF display mode. This
can be set as a general default using add-ons or advanced techniques, or
set in Acrobat manually for each PDF file.

Unrelated: I recommend to use the Adobe PDF printer driver (previously
known as Distiller printer driver, or AdobePS printer driver + Acrobat
Distiller PPD) when producing PDFs, rather than print-oriented drivers.

I'm arriving late to the party, but have you tried saving the file

Other hacks are to save it out as text (or even RTF) and then open that

lesser pain.)

If you can indeed OPEN and view the PDF file in
either Reader or Acrobat, the file is not corrupted.
An inability to delete or move a file is not indicative
of file corruption, but rather, that some program is
holding the file open. That program may be on your
system or perhaps the server itself or some other user
on the network. Note that sometimes even though you think
you have ended a run of Acrobat, it still is running for
a while and may have some files open.

Another possibility is that you put the file into a
network directory for which your access privileges are
setup to allow you to open existing files or even create
files in that directory, but not delete or otherwise mess
with file attributes.

Some simple things to try: Reboot YOUR computer. If your
computer was the culprit, i.e., some program holding it
open, then the reboot should clear it.

If the reboot doesn't clear the problem and you KNOW that
no one else on the network is accessing that file, you
should have your network administrator check your access
privileges on the server and specifically for the directory
in question. You clearly need read, write, file create, file
deletion, file attribute modification, etc. privileges for
that directory.

Major problems with generating TOC

2006-10-12 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Framemaker 7.2 on Windows XP.

I am trying to something very basic and simple - create a TOC for a
book. Right now, I have but a single file in the book. I use Add Table
of Contents, select the paragraph tags that I want to include in the
TOC, then generate the book. When I open the TOC and go to view the
reference page to format the TOC entries, the TOC reference page shows
absolutely no entries for any of the paragraph tags that I have
selected. Instead, it shows entries for tags that do not exist anywhere
in the single file for which I am generating the TOC and this file was
not created from an existing template/file. This single file was created
totally from scratch.

That is, I have chosen Heading1, Heading2, and Heading3 to generate my
TOC. When I open the TOC Reference page, I don't see any of the
following entries: Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, and Heading3TOC. Instead, I
see a bunch of weird entries with buried end of flow symbols and tab
symbols and only the first two are selectable and editable. I cannot
select anything else on the Reference page.

I am absolutely stymied by this. In all of my years of using Framemaker,
I have never seen anything like this in my life. Any and all help is
sincerely appreciated.

Oh yea - the other thing. The page size/margins on the body page of the
TOC look just fine, but when I open the reference page, the actual text
entry area is reduced significantly and the margins are shifted. On the
body page, I have a 1 inch margin on the left and one inch on the right.
On the Reference page, the left margin is shifted over to 0.25 and the
right margin is now over 2.5 inches.

 Appreciate your help

Tex,

It sounds like you're trying to create a landscape paper size. You don't

need to do that. You need to create a new master page and rotate it
(Format Customize Layout Rotate), then add a text frame to it as
well as header/footer frames if you need those. Then apply that master
to your body page.

Caveats: If your rotated page's flow is the same as your body flow, then

future edits can screw up which content appears on the landscape page.
It is often best to create a separate file for the landscape material;
you can make it act like part of the previous and following chapter
files by setting all their numbering properties correctly.

Alternatively, if you stay in a single chapter file, you can put a
distinctive pgf tag on your landscape material and use the Apply Master
Pages feature to ensure that content is given the right master page.

Hi, Tammy:

If you're using a copied or renamed or otherwise recycled book file,
you're probably picking up information from it in the TOC you're
creating. Have you tried creating a new book file and adding the new
document file to it, then adding the TOC and generating? What results?

Framemaker 7.2 on Windows XP.

I am trying to something very basic and simple - create a TOC for a
book. Right now, I have but a single file in the book. I use Add
Table of Contents, select the paragraph tags that I want to include in
the TOC, then generate the book. When I open the TOC and go to view
the reference page to format the TOC entries, the TOC reference page
shows absolutely no entries for any of the paragraph tags that I have
selected. Instead, it shows entries for tags that do not exist
anywhere in the single file for which I am generating the TOC and this
file was not created from an existing template/file. This single file
was created totally from scratch.

That is, I have chosen Heading1, Heading2, and Heading3 to generate my
TOC. When I open the TOC Reference page, I don't see any of the
following entries: Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, and Heading3TOC. Instead,
I see a bunch of weird entries with buried end of flow symbols and tab
symbols and only the first two are selectable and editable. I cannot
select anything else on the Reference page.

I am absolutely stymied by this. In all of my years of using
Framemaker, I have never seen anything like this in my life. Any and
all help is sincerely appreciated.

Tables not accepting Ruling settings

2006-10-12 Thread Karyn Hunt
Hi All,

I have a bunch of tables in an administrators guide and am trying to convert
them all to one consistent style that uses a thin line to separate all columns
and rows.

To achieve this look, I've used the Table Designer Ruling tab and have set
every single field to thin.

On most tables in my book, the thin lines appear. But some stubbornly refuse
to add the lines, even if I repeatedly import the template (which has thin
lines defined in the ruling settings), or set them manually and repeatedly
click Apply and Update All. I've even selected to remove overrides, but
still no luck. Why? And how can I fix this?

This happens on some files (chapters) within my book, but not in others. And
within a single file/chapter, it can happen on some tables, but not others.

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.1.

Aren't we forgetting the <$volnum> numbering builder? It works just like
<$chapnum> and can be used everywhere that numbering builder can be used.
Just insert a user variable containing <$volnum>, then select all the book
components that belong to a single guide and set <$volnum> to a fixed
value for all the selected components in the group.

structured import and pgftag fonts

2006-10-12 Thread Noah Evans
Hey all,

I'm having a very strange problem with my structure application. When I
import an xml file, none of the fonts follows the paragraph tags(which are
assigned by the edd, they show up just fine in the pgftag bar and menu, but
the fonts just don't apply for some reason). They seem to be inheriting the
font information from the root element instead.

However if I just insert an element manually the font follows the pgftag
correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Noah

Hi Noah,

I am not sure what is causing this by try this after you import the XML.

1) Choose File > Import > Element Definitions.

2) Leave Current selected in the Import from Document popup. Check the

Again, not sure. We have release guides that sport a table of short
descriptions on page one, and a More... link to take the reader deeper into
the doc for the rest of the feature's write-up.

Creating bookmarks, more and top links in FM

2006-10-12 Thread Charles Beck
Hi JG,

I do not have a totally definitive answer for your questions (I think),
and I wonder if anyone else does either, which may be why you have not
heard anything.

The short answer is that I do not think it is possible to do the things
you want to do in Frame. Certainly not easily, in any case.

For questions 1 and 2, it *might* be possible--and I strongly stress the
word "might"--to use the HTML Macro marker, which inserts HTML code into
your output document "as is", to do what you want.

But I am a little confused as to what you
mean by the term "bookmark" in the context of FrameMaker.

HTH, but afraid it won't,
Chuck Beck

Somewhat OT: Bookmarks in PDF Jumping to Wrong View

2006-10-12 Thread susan_corco...@handheld.com
Hello All,

I'm not sure if this is caused by FM, or Acrobat, but I know we have
plenty of experts with both programs on this list, so I hope you can help
me out here.
When I create a pdf (FM7, Acrobat 7 Pro), the bookmarks come through just
fine, but when I click on a bookmark in Acrobat, the display doesn't align
properly. So if my link is to something on page 4, Acrobat might pop me
to halfway between pages 4 and 5. If I click on the bookmark for the
front cover, I'm shown the bottom of the front cover, and about a third of
the following page. This happens with every bookmark.
I've created files using different print drivers (Scitex and Docutech),
then distilling, and tried printed directly to pdf, but get the same
results every time. And the weird display problem occurs on any other PC
viewing my file.

Has anyone else seen this? Got any suggestions?
Please copy any responses to me directly, since I'm on digest.

Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer does not make links

2006-10-12 Thread Ridder, Fred
Oops, just noticed that you are using PDF Writer. That's the
problem, right there. PDF Writer is a "quick and dirty" PDF
creation tool that does not produce hyperlinks. To get links
in your PDF, you must use a method that uses Acrobat
Distiller (printing to the "Adobe PDF" printer, printing to
a PostScript file and distilling, etc.) and you must use the
setting I mentioned in my previous response.

FW: Master Pages - landscape and portrait pages

2006-10-12 Thread Carol Wade
I have a book that has a rotated landscape master page and uses system
variables that are on other pages, but headers & footers are not
rotated. I have rotated only the main text flow frame by selecting it on
the master page and then selecting Graphics > Rotate (Rotate by 90 deg
clockwise).

Tex,

It sounds like you're trying to create a landscape paper size. You don't

need to do that. You need to create a new master page and rotate it
(Format > Customize Layout > Rotate), then add a text frame to it as
well as header/footer frames if you need those. Then apply that master
to your body page.

Caveats: If your rotated page's flow is the same as your body flow, then

future edits can screw up which content appears on the landscape page.
It is often best to create a separate file for the landscape material;
you can make it act like part of the previous and following chapter
files by setting all their numbering properties correctly.

Alternatively, if you stay in a single chapter file, you can put a
distinctive pgf tag on your landscape material and use the Apply Master
Pages feature to ensure that content is given the right master page.

Somewhat OT: Bookmarks in PDF Jumping to Wrong View

2006-10-12 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Susan:

It's possible that your PDFs are set to open in either

* Default viewing mode, and the default view setting for your Reader or
Acrobat is set to Continuous, which allows scrolling across partial pages

* Continuous viewing mode

Setting the viewing mode for your PDFs to single page viewing mode, or
side-by-side page viewing mode, would probably stop the effect you're
seeing. I don't believe you can set this in FrameMaker, but with Acrobat
Professional 6 or later, you can use batch processing to create a
process to set the opening view properties for a whole directory-full of
PDFs. Check your Acrobat Help for Batch.

It's not freeware PDF Writer though.  I never had a problem all these days;
since this morning the TOC is posing to be a big problem in the PDF file. I
follow the exact same method that you have suggested below.

  Still trying to debug

Thanks for your response; appreciate it.

Somewhat OT: Bookmarks in PDF Jumping to Wrong View

2006-10-12 Thread Grant Hogarth
Quick Question: Is the link taking you to a place where the "anchor" is
at the top of the screen, no matter where that falls on the page? IIRC,
this can be controlled with a setting (which you can set post creation
(in Acrobat Std or Pro -- NOT Reader) by setting the page presentation
(under File> Properties) to the way you want, and then resaving the
file).

Hello All,

I'm not sure if this is caused by FM, or Acrobat, but I know we have
plenty of experts with both programs on this list, so I hope you can
help me out here.
When I create a pdf (FM7, Acrobat 7 Pro), the bookmarks come through
just fine, but when I click on a bookmark in Acrobat, the display
doesn't align properly. So if my link is to something on page 4,
Acrobat might pop me to halfway between pages 4 and 5. If I click on
the bookmark for the front cover, I'm shown the bottom of the front
cover, and about a third of the following page. This happens with every
bookmark.
I've created files using different print drivers (Scitex and Docutech),
then distilling, and tried printed directly to pdf, but get the same
results every time. And the weird display problem occurs on any other
PC viewing my file.

Has anyone else seen this? Got any suggestions?

Major problems with generating TOC

2006-10-12 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Framemaker 7.2 on Windows XP.

I am trying to something very basic and simple - create a TOC for a
book. Right now, I have but a single file in the book. I use Add > Table
of Contents, select the paragraph tags that I want to include in the
TOC, then generate the book.

Major problems with generating TOC

2006-10-12 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Oh yea - the other thing. The page size/margins on the body page of the
TOC look just fine, but when I open the reference page, the actual text
entry area is reduced significantly and the margins are shifted. On the
body page, I have a 1 inch margin on the left and one inch on the right.
On the Reference page, the left margin is shifted over to 0.25 and the
right margin is now over 2.5 inches.

This has to do with the display settings of the PDF file, which could be
set to "Single Page" or "Continuous", or "Default" (in which case, the
local user preference, either Single or Continuous, is used).

Major problems with generating TOC

2006-10-12 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Tammy:

If you're using a copied or renamed or otherwise "recycled" book file,
you're probably picking up information from it in the TOC you're
creating. Have you tried creating a new book file and adding the new
document file to it, then adding the TOC and generating? What results?

Tables not accepting "Ruling" settings

2006-10-12 Thread Karyn Hunt
Hi All,

I have a bunch of tables in an administrators guide and am trying to convert
them all to one consistent style that uses a thin line to separate all columns
and rows.

To achieve this look, I've used the Table Designer > Ruling tab and have set
every single field to "thin".

On most tables in my book, the thin lines appear. But some stubbornly refuse
to add the lines, even if I repeatedly import the template (which has thin
lines defined in the ruling settings), or set them manually and repeatedly
click "Apply" and "Update All". I've even selected to remove overrides, but
still no luck. Why? And how can I fix this?

This happens on some files (chapters) within my book, but not in others. And
within a single file/chapter, it can happen on some tables, but not others.

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.1.

Karyn
