The doc has no Custom master pages, just right and left. Also no
custom body pages overriding master pages. And it's set to double-
sided with a right first page.

 Thanks for trying.

Text flow oddity

2007-12-19 Thread Grant Hogarth
I've got an odd one
I'm running FM 7.1/Win XP
I'm generating a single-sided document with two text flows in parallel
columns.
Flow A is generated list (LOP or TOC, both behave the same for this
issue).
Flow B is a pasted text list.
Basically I'm making sure that I've got a heading for each item in the
pasted list.

Problem
When I regenerate the list, Page one behaves as expected, with the two
text flows running in parallel. The problem comes on the following
pages.
The Pasted list (Flow B) runs onto the following page normally.
However, the Generated list *skips* a page, and begins flowing again on
page 3.

Both flows are set to autoconnect.

Suggestions???

Re: Strange right/left pages - SOLVED

2007-12-19 Thread Pat Christenson
I played around with this and was able to correct the problem even
though I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong.

There was a minor discrepancy in the column width on the Right/Left
master pages and this, combined with balance columns being turned on,
resulted in the problem. Unfortunately, fixing the column widths
didn't fix it but turning column balance off did. Since column
balance is essential to the files, I ended up rebuilding the
template with correct column widths and column balance ON and
importing Page Layouts and Doc Properties into the files.

I still don't know why importing corrects it when making those same
changes in an individual file doesn't but hey, at least it's working
now.

Thanks to all who responded -

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-19 Thread Austin Meredith
Having recently upgraded on the XP PC from Adobe FrameMaker 7 and
Acrobat Pro 7 to FM8.0p266 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.1 and Adobe Reader
8.1.1, we can't get our distilled hypertext buttons to function
anymore. Our Kouroo project is dead in the water!

We've tried View Generated PDF in Acrobat, and we've tried
Generate PDF Bookmarks, and we've tried Generate Tagged PDF, and
Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs, etc.

The routine, which worked fine in FM7 in distilling Acrobat7 docs,
but doesn't seem to be functioning for us in version 8, has been
while distilling to Embed All Page Thumbnails, and to Manage
Embedded Index, and to Automatically generate web links on All
pages, and to add a document description under Properties, and to
Reduce File Size, and then to Enable for Commenting and Analysis
in Adobe Reader.

However, now, whenever one punches a hypertext button on a web page
that we have generated, the error message we always get is There was
an error while performing an action. Attempt to call a method that
has not been implemented. These are hypertext buttons that work fine
on the PC, in connecting one FrameMaker8 document to another
FrameMaker8 document -- but in between two distilled Acrobat8
documents on the web, none of them work at all.

An example of this would be the interplay between
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/G/TheGrimkeSisters.pdf and
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/W/TheodoreWeld.pdf

Please somebody -- tell me that you do this successfully, that it
does still work in 8??? Reassurance would help a lot at this point.

Maintaining character tags in cross references

2007-12-19 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Jerilynne

It's do-able but painful. I worked it out (with forum help :-) a while ago for
preserving italics in courier font in xrefs.

Basically, FM only preserves font family info in xrefs, so you have to fool it
into thinking that the bold/italic/whatever form of the font is a separate font
family. To do this, you put entries in the maker.ini file.

This was the process I took to get the italics in courier:

1. Close FM.

2. Back up maker.ini, then in the [WindowsToFrameFontAliases] section of
maker.ini, replace this line:
Courier, Italic, *=Courier, Oblique, *, Regular
with this line:
Courier, Italic, *=CourierItalic, Oblique, *, Regular

This makes FM call the italics Courier font "CourierItalic".

3. Open FM. Define the character tag to use CourierItalic instead of Courier.

If different xrefs are supposed to be different fonts, you'd have to define
separate xref formats for each font. You can't just specify
italics/bold/whatever and leave the font name "as is". And if you're sharing FM
documents, everyone has to make the same change.

Cheers, Rebecca

Hello all and best wishes for an amazing holiday season

It has been a while since I used Frame so I was trying to rememberis
there a way to maintain the character tags in a cross reference. For
example, the source text has been neatly formatted with character tags to
emphasize the names of the menu options. When this text is cross referenced,
the character tag does not show up, although the text is correct, including
specially formatted areas. Am I forgetting something or is this impossible?

Thanks bunches for your help!

I hope you work with text symbols and borders displayed; if not, go to
the View menu and turn both on. Now look at page 2 (the page that Flow A
skips). Does the text frame in which Flow A should be actually exist?

If not, my first guess is that don't really have a single-sided doc, and
the Left master page is missing the text frame for Flow A. Go to Format
> Page Layout > Pagination to check. Or View > Master Pages.

If page 2 has the empty text frame, is there an end-of-flow symbol at
the top? If so, the text frame isn't connected to the flow. I'm not sure
how that would happen in Flow A, but not B (if you added a disconnected
page, both text frames would be disconnected).

Once again, though, I'd suspect that you really have a 2-sided doc with
a messed-up Left master page. If that's not the case, try just deleting
page 2 (Special > Delete Pages). If you just have something messed up on
that one page, that should fix it -- page 3 will become page 2, a new
page 3 will be added, and both flows will just, um, reflow.

HTH!
Richard

Strange right/left pages - SOLVED

2007-12-19 Thread Pat Christenson
I played around with this and was able to correct the problem even
though I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong.

There was a minor discrepancy in the column width on the Right/Left
master pages and this, combined with balance columns being turned on,
resulted in the problem. Unfortunately, fixing the column widths
didn't fix it but turning column balance off did. Since column
balance is essential to the files, I ended up rebuilding the
template with correct column widths and column balance ON and
importing Page Layouts and Doc Properties into the files.

I still don't know why importing corrects it when making those same
changes in an individual file doesn't but hey, at least it's working
now.

Thanks to all who responded -

while distilling to "Embed All Page Thumbnails," and to "Manage
Embedded Index," and to "Automatically generate web links on All
pages," and to add a document description under "Properties," and to
"Reduce File Size," and then to "Enable for Commenting and Analysis
in Adobe Reader."

However, now, whenever one punches a hypertext button on a web page
that we have generated, the error message we always get is "There was
an error while performing an action. Attempt to call a method that
has not been implemented." These are hypertext buttons that work fine
on the PC, in connecting one FrameMaker8 document to another
FrameMaker8 document -- but in between two distilled Acrobat8
documents on the web, none of them work at all.

An example of this would be the interplay between
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/G/TheGrimkeSisters.pdf and
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/W/TheodoreWeld.pdf

Please somebody -- tell me that you do this successfully, that it
does still work in 8??? Reassurance would help a lot at this point.

default Distiller zoom on open setting

2007-12-19 Thread Ben Hechter
Hi Folks,

While the PDF thread is still warm...

I once knew where to find the default Distiller zoom on open setting, but it
has mysteriously escaped me.

Does anyone have the silver bullet?

Thanks!

FM8 crashing when book building: Update

2007-12-19 Thread kanti.m...@schange.com
Hello all:

Thanks for great input.

Ran more tests yesterday in which I removed all char formatting with
IXgen/FM6, then reopened/saved in FM8 and
generated the book: all was well.

Also, book that was crashing in FM8 definitely survived without our IX
template. BUT: the generic index maintained the
char formats, and survived.

Anyway, Adobe has been in touch with this, and I sent them a zip of books,
test notes, and crash files. They have now
been able to reproduce the problem and will get back to us.

Text flow oddity

2007-12-19 Thread Grant Hogarth
Thanks Richard et al ---

Yes, Text Symbols and Borders are displayed.
Yes, Page 2 has a "end of flow" symbol at the top of the "generated"
column.
Paras are the same in both flows. Start anywhere, no frames, one widow,
no KWN.
Deleting the 2nd page and regenerating does not solve the problem
(although it does trim the static list!)
Dynamic document was created from standard FM 7.1 TOC option.
Source doc and dynamic doc are both single sided.

This *is* replicable --- I have even deleted the generated files and
started over, suspecting corruption.

I would be happy to send the pair of files (63k zipped) to anyone that
wants to look.
(The only change is that I've stripped the table contents -- that does
not change the outcome.)

Cheers!

HTH!
Richard
