sdl trados and FM (translation)

Hello,

I am familiar with FrameMaker but not with SDL Trados. I am trying to
translate some documents into French with SDL Edit, which allows *.mif
files as input. When I start a new translation, I select the *.mif file,
and then it creates four intermediarary *.itd files (one for the text, one
for x-refs, one for index entries, one for variables and number formats. My
question is that when I translate these four documents and reexport them to
mif, I end up with four documents. Is there some way to re-import my
translated index entries, variable entries, and numbering formats back into
my main document?

Odd keyboard behavior

This is fairly bizarre. I've been having no problems at all with smart quotes 
on FM8 p277. I spent
a moment or two wondering what Mr Griffith was talking about (but confident he 
did know ;-).

My maker.ini looks like this:

 the third paragraph under 'Oblating the Retromizer'?

Some standard document formats need line numbers as part of their
requirements. For example:

1. Some legal documents.

2. Patent filings (numbered every five lines).

Importing FM Text

Hello, Framers!

 

I have several (OK, 50) short Framemaker files that I want to combine
into what will be Chapter 3 of a book file. The book file has already
been created (it's for a user guide that is updated from year to year),
and the chapter already exists ... I've just revamped the chapter and
want to replace it with my combined 50 files. The 50 files have many,
many graphics imported by reference. They also include intra-file
cross-references. I'm waiting until they are integrated into the book
file before I worry about cross-referencing to other files.

 

My plan is open the existing Chapter 3 file (the one I want to
replace). I will delete the text flow from Chapter 3, then do a File 
Import  File  Import for each of my 50 short files. When the Import
Text Flow by Copy dialog comes up, I will select Body Page Flow and
Reformat Using Current Document's Formats.

 

I have been working in Framemaker for about a year and a half, but my
this type of import is not something I have done before. My concerns are
as follows:

 

1.  Will I lose my graphics? I tested this and it doesn't look like
I will. I'm just nervous. :-(
2.  Will the styles get messed up? Both the original Chapter 3
and my 50 files used the same document as a template, so the styles are
(or should be!) all the same.

 

Also, is there a better way to do this? Does anyone have any tips for
any preliminary steps I should take?

Dear Edwin,
 
the usual process (for translation using Trados Workbench or TagEditor, I do 
not know about SDL Edit) is:
 
1. save .fm as .mif
2. convert .mif to .rtf (for translation using Trados Workbench) or to .ttx 
(translation using TagEditor) via the STagger for FrameMaker filter. You should 
end up with as many .rtf or .ttx as source documents + an ancillary file 
(containing template information etc.)
3. translate your doc using Trados Workbench or TagEditor.
4. Backconvert to .mif using STagger for FrameMaker
5. Save your .mif as .fm and check that the layout, Xrefs, etc are OK (basic QA 
check).

In the Paragraph Designer, first use the Set Window to As Is command
(in the Commands list). 
Then set the new font family on the Default Font tab of the designer 
(leave everything else As Is).
Then choose Global Opdate Options from the Commands list. 
In the Global Update Options dialog, choose the Default Font Properties 
Only and All Paragraphs and Catalog Entries options, then click Update.

Hi

Frame 8.0p277 on Win XP SP2.  Smart Quotes turned on.  Font in test doc 
is Bembo.  Language = UK English.  Windows regional settings = English 
New Zealand.

I've just tested the single and double curly quotes in a Frame document 
and they all work fine for me.  The Smart Quotes section in my maker.ini 
looks like this:

; SmartQuotes \xd4\xd5\xd2\xd3 )  English curved quotes
; SmartQuotes \xe2\xd4\xe3\xd2 )  German-style quotes with base quotes

In case the actual quote characters don't reproduce correctly via the 
list, they are curly quotes in the ini file (ie like 6 9).  When I 
opened the ini file into my old text editor Kedit, they did not 
display.  However, they did display correctly in Notepad. 

As far as I can remember, I haven't modified my maker.ini file at all 
(although I have other customisations).

Despite what some others have stated, there is no viable way to do this in
FrameMaker without developing an API client.

And, despite what one poster suggested, development of such an API client
would NOT be trivial, because it would have to detect both the presence and
the vertical position of each text line, whether in or out of a table, and
would have to deal with all of the following, which affect whether a line is
numbered, and, if it is, the positioning of the line number:

a. The ability to suppress line numbering for text that should not be numbered.

c. Properly number text insets that are imported by reference.

d. The variable amounts of white space between wrapped lines of a multi-line
paragraph caused by the line spacing setting, and, if the paragraph is set

presence of subscripts, superscripts, larger font sizes of formatted text
strings within paragraphs, and anchored frames inserted within the text of a
paragraph.

e. Variations in the Space Above/Below settings of paragraphs and tables.

f. Variations in the top/bottom cell margins of rows, and the alignment
(top, bottom, or center) of text within cells.

g. Suppression of line numbering for table heading and footing rows that
repeat on each page of a multi-page table.

h. The empty spaces created by graphics.

Additionally, such an API client would have to deal successfully with:

a. Multi-column page layouts, inserting the line numbers in that case in the
gaps between columns.

b. Other variations in master page usage which affect where and how the line
numbers would appear.

c. If line numbers run consecutively throughout a large multi-file book (as
opposed to starting the line numbering at 1 on each page), the API client
would also have to deal with the continuation of the line numbering in each
file of the multi-file book, and the large range in the number of line
number digits (from 1 to 6), finding some way to fit them within the page
margins, and the gaps between columns in multi-column layouts.

Certainly, the complexity of a line numbering capability such as that
described above explains why it is not presently available in FrameMaker,
and why (to my knowledge) no one has developed an API client that will do it.

In my view, the only feasible way it could be done is to:

a. Add a line numbering on/off parameter to the Numbering or Pagination
properties panel of the FrameMaker Paragraph Designer palette

b. Add a line numbering on/off parameter to the FrameMaker Table Designer
palette.

c. Add a Line Numbering Properties dialog to the FrameMaker Format >
Document menu that would be similar to the existing Change Bar Properties
dialog.

d. Add a line numbering continuation/restart parameter to the FrameMaker Set
Up Document dialog in the book file.

e. Impose tight restrictions on paragraph and table formats, as well as
master pages (e.g., no multi-column layouts for columns where line numbering
is required), to minimize the problems imposed by variations in spacing and
page layout described previously.

f. Develop a set of templates that implement the capabilities and
limitations described in a, b, c, and d above.

There's been lots of discussion on how this could be achieved with 
varying degrees of difficulty, but I wonder if there's an easier way, 
depending on the *reason* your reviewers want the numbering.

Are they asking for this just to make it easier to pinpoint something on 
a page, to avoid having to describe things as "the second sentence in 
the third paragraph under 'Oblating the Retromizer'?"

If that's the case, perhaps they would be satisfied with something a 
little cruder.  You could create a duplicate template and add to the 
master pages in the margin area a vertical series of consecutive numbers 
at some small font and line spacing.  The numbers won't line up exactly 
with the body text, but would be close enough to enable reviewers to 
refer to "page 19, lines 40-50" to describe the location of the text in 
question.  If they include the page number, there's no need for the line 
numbers to be consecutive throughout the book -- each master page could 
have the same numbering 1-100 or whatever suits.  For production, 
reimport your regular template to get rid of the line numbers.

Importing FM Text

Hello, Framers!



I have several (OK, 50) short Framemaker files that I want to combine
into what will be "Chapter 3" of a book file. The book file has already
been created (it's for a user guide that is updated from year to year),
and the chapter already exists ... I've just revamped the chapter and
want to replace it with my combined 50 files. The 50 files have many,
many graphics imported by reference. They also include intra-file
cross-references. I'm waiting until they are integrated into the book
file before I worry about cross-referencing to other files.



My plan is open the existing "Chapter 3" file (the one I want to
replace). I will delete the text flow from Chapter 3, then do a File >
Import > File > Import for each of my 50 short files. When the Import
Text Flow by Copy dialog comes up, I will select Body Page Flow and
Reformat Using Current Document's Formats.



I have been working in Framemaker for about a year and a half, but my
this type of import is not something I have done before. My concerns are
as follows:



1.  Will I lose my graphics? I tested this and it doesn't look like
I will. I'm just nervous. :-(
2.  Will the styles get "messed up"? Both the original "Chapter 3"
and my 50 files used the same document as a template, so the styles are
(or should be!) all the same.



Also, is there a better way to do this? Does anyone have any tips for
any preliminary steps I should take?

sdl trados and FM (translation)

Dear Edwin,

the usual process (for translation using Trados Workbench or TagEditor, I do 
not know about SDL Edit) is:

1. save .fm as .mif
2. convert .mif to .rtf (for translation using Trados Workbench) or to .ttx 
(translation using TagEditor) via the STagger for FrameMaker filter. You should 
end up with as many .rtf or .ttx as source documents + an ancillary file 
(containing template information etc.)
3. translate your doc using Trados Workbench or TagEditor.
4. Backconvert to .mif using STagger for FrameMaker
5. Save your .mif as .fm and check that the layout, Xrefs, etc are OK (basic QA 
check).

Well,
Your plan should work fine. I'm assuming that you're planning to
convert all the text inserts to text after you import in order to
build a new chapter because it would be easier to manage and reconcile
tags.
But for an alternative you can keep them as referenced insets if you
think things are going to be changing

all paragraph tags. I just can't remember.

There's no need to do that if, in the Import dialog, you select Copy
Into Document instead of Import By Reference. And since Nina mentioned
the Import Text Flow by Copy dialog, that's what she's planning to do. 

Nina, I've never done a merge of that scale -- just combining 2 or 3
files into one. But there shouldn't be any issues or problems, assuming
you aren't changing the location relative to the referenced graphics.

In the Paragraph Designer, first use the Set Window to As Is command
(in the Commands list). 
Then set the new font family on the Default Font tab of the designer 
(leave everything else As Is).
Then choose Global Opdate Options from the Commands list. 
In the Global Update Options dialog, choose the Default Font Properties 
Only and All Paragraphs and Catalog Entries options, then click Update.

If you _really_ mean all:

1) Open Paragraph Designer. 
2) From the Commands list, select Set Window to As Is. 
3) On the Default Font tab, set Family to the font family you want. 
4) From the Commands list, select Global Update Options. 
5) In the dialog, select Default Font Properties Only and All Paragraphs
and Catalog Entries, and then click Update. 

The other options offer less-drastic solutions. For instance, All
Matching Tags in Selection can come in handy.
