Snag-It is okay, but a bit too-bitmapped looking and inflexible for my
tastes.

We developed a Photoshop action that loads a masking layer (anti-aliased
tear) that you position over an image (scale as needed), hit enter and 2 new
layers are created, you can use either one (or both by positioning the
content) and that's it. We also created some variations that do tears of
particular sections of a big screen (top left, top right, bottom left,
bottom right) and a variation that works for menus, including multiple
tears. And they all look smooth like torn paper, not jagged like a low-res
GIF.

So ... Photoshop and GIMP ... create an action or set of actions. That's the
best, most flexible solution.

If anyone really wants a copy, e-mail me. Please note that as they are PS
Actions, they will come into your installation with all of the possible
steps within the action enabled, and there are some steps that are not
desirable depending on what you are doing. You will also need to modify the
Open step to point to the correct PSD file for the mask. I am willing to
share this content, but not help out with it. This is provided as is.

Re: MadCap Blaze

2008-03-19 Thread William Gaffga
I downloaded it. Underwhelmed.

We purchased Flare in our move away from WebWorks Publisher Pro and I am
just starting to learn it. I looked at Blaze and was shocked that it
looked identical to Flare and that I had no idea how to go about making
a book. Never have I acquired a DTP, layout or text app of any sort and
had no idea how to proceed. If I banged my head against it for a little
while I'm sure I'd get it but decided instead to import a FM book (about
350 pages) and look at the results.

30 minutes later I had a bunch of files all in one structure. PNGs mixed
in with HTML files. Chaos. And HTML files? You gotta be kidding me.

If I have a lot of free time on my hands I might look again but right
now ... not looking at Blaze at all as a replacement for FM.

I have to agree. And for the CMS thing, just last night some of us in

Re: Tools for converting FM docs to WikiMedia?

2008-02-20 Thread William Gaffga
There isn't really a way to go FM - Wiki, i.e. there are no tools to do
so easily. You could dump out HTML from FM and just put them in the wiki
but that won't get you the wiki-goodness. We were able to largely
automate the process for our first foray but it was simply an ideal
candidate because the original content was largely uniform and the end
product wiki was template based. I'll summarize below.

We had a book that doc'd commands (roughly 15000 of them) for a
scripting language we use internally for our software. These commands
were in a tabular format. There were of course some paragraphs that came
before the commands in a section, describing their purpose or use, and
there were several chapters that were simply explanatory text. Nothing
complex.

We dumped this stuff out to text files. Wrote a PERL script to identify
the various components and modify the text files. We then wrote another
PERL script to convert that data to include the wiki template
information. We then populated the wiki and made many manual changes. In
total, the project took about 4 weeks including planning, which included
deciding which wiki format we needed.

So, this is possible but that strictly depends on your content, and it
will require extra knowledge on your end.

Hope that helps.

FM8, Vista and holding down the left mouse button

2008-01-23 Thread William Gaffga
Alrighty,

Before I get annoyed with Adobe Tech Support, I will ask the question
here. Has anyone experienced (and hopefully solved) a problem with FM8
under Vista in which holding down the left mouse button for more than a
second or two - as in to do a drag select - and FM locks up? We are
experiencing this on 3 machines, 2 are 64-bit Vista Ultimate (identical
machines) and 1 is 32-bit Vista Ultimate. Each has different
mouse/keyboard combos. The only commonality between the systems is FM8
and being Vista Ultimate.

Sound familiar? Hoping for some responses from those on the bleeding
edge (bleeding because it is Vista, edge 'cause ya wanna jump).

Thanks.

Re: FM8, Vista and holding down the left mouse button

2008-01-23 Thread William Gaffga
After not coming up with any good hints online, I spent some time with
Tech Support. It would seem that there is a conflict in background
services. At first it seemed to be SnagIt - running SnagIt AFTER running
FM on my machine caused the mysterious hangs to stop - but that was
quickly tossed out as this did not help on at least one of my
co-workers' machines.

So, we are in the process of restarting with various services enabled to
figure out what is what. I will keep the list informed.

The experiments begin.

FrameMaker to Wiki conversion

2007-07-17 Thread William Gaffga

Apologies for the cross-post.

Has anyone tried or know of a good way to go from Frame to a Wiki?
We are looking at moving a library of keywords for a dev tool from FM
to a wiki format. This would be a one time thing. I tried googling
this and one fella does a FM-HTML-Wiki conversion with a lot of
cleanup:

http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/User_talk:Daniel_K._Schneider.

We could write a tool to convert table entries to fill in the
database, and I suspect that is our only solution but I figured I
should first ask for experiences and feedback on this crazy idea.

TIA.

Some wiki software enables you to include raw HTML pages. If your
wiki can handle this, then just convert your FM to HTML using
whatever method you like. You may end up with an uneditable HTML
page, though, and not a wiki page, which is not particularly what
you want.

Actually converting fm content to wiki format is going to take more
work. If you have a small amount of content the easiest method is
probably just to save as text (or copy all the text out of the
files) and apply the wiki formatting by hand. If you have a lot of
pages, or very complex pages, then you'll probably want to write a
script/tool to convert from FM output (text, html, XML) to your
wiki's input format.

Alas, I know of no more general way to do this other than hand-
built tools, especially since every wiki has its own tagging language.

Good luck.

Laura

Thanks, Laura.

(Oof! Bottom posting freaks me out). It seems we're definitely going
to need to write an app or script to do the conversion as the keyword
list is something 15000 entries. Fortunately they are all in separate
tables and are mostly uniform.

Re: Anything new about when the next release of Framemaker will be launched?

2007-03-29 Thread William Gaffga
Adobe was at the WritersUA conference this week in Long Beach, CA.
They were saying FM 8 is due this summer. They didn't have much to
say except we will should be happy with what it has. It looks like
they're trying to do some integration with FM, Captivate and Acrobat
in a manner similar to CS.

They, as with several other vendors had a demo session on Tuesday
after the seminars. I tried to find someone who attended but never
had any luck - I was FAR more interested in what MadCap had to show .
Perhaps someone on this list was there?

As for Blaze, I like it. After talking to Mike Hamilton (head of
MadCap) I got a more clear sense of what Blaze is. MadCap sees a huge
opportunity in the space between Word and FM. Basically, they see a
lot of TWers who have maxed out on Word and see its shortcomings who
would benefit from moving to something more like FM (TOC, cross ref,
variables, conditions, etc..) They they see a lot of FM users who do
not need everything in FM who want a new product with most of the
features in FM without some of the esoteric stuff. It appears
promising and I am certainly in that range of users they see.

I was going to keep this to myself but now, what the heck. On Monday
I was talking to one of the FM guys in their booth, I don't recall
for sure but I think it was RJ Jacquez. After getting an answer about
something, DITA support I think, I jokingly said, So, if I told you
that we still have some Macs in our production and use FM on them
everyday, I suppose I should just turn around and walk away? He
started talking about how FM runs quite nicely on Parallels and that
Adobe has several systems set up that way and he uses Macs himself.
Then he implied that there may be, at some point, a Mactel version of
FM. I didn't believe that one bit and I wanted to say Yeah, sure.
In fact, I was taken aback that he was even talking about Parallels
and couldn't stick with him in the conversation. I'd like to see that
but really don't expect it.

Anything new about when the next release of Framemaker will be launched?

After getting an answer about
something, DITA support I think, I jokingly said, "So, if I told you
that we still have some Macs in our production and use FM on them
everyday, I suppose I should just turn around and walk away?" He
started talking about how FM runs quite nicely on Parallels and that

I'm not an Adobe employee but I'll bite.
First off, that is a VERY open statement. What about table ruling
does not work? I've never seen an issue where it does not work
correctly, except where it was my fault, such as a manual override
that I can easily clear out. Generally speaking, FM's tables are
about the best thing out there and I don't believe I've ever heard
someone complain about them.

Re: Frame's future

2007-02-28 Thread William Gaffga
I can't speak for the whole, but I can for this Mac fan and his Doc
Group. We are currently on Macs despite creating PC software (long
story, short is we used to be Mac and transitioned our code/product).
We've kept Docs on the Mac due to legacy docs and ease of use and
there was no real compelling reason to force a move. Now that we are
EOL'd by Adobe's lack of support for the Mac we need to look at
transition options.

Frankly, FrameMaker, as much as I like it, is showing its age and the
PC version has quirks that are a PITA (fonts, keybd shortcuts ...).
So, if we need to make a jump, why not look at MadCap and be excited?
Their workflow seems to be better than our current FM - WebWorks (we
use a PC for that).

I know of a few others in similar situations. So, for at least some,
it is about logic.

Then again, I dare anyone to try and take my G5 from me :-)

Re: FM 7.1 Compatibility

Oh dear god, I'd never actually use OLE, I was just listing it as the
one problem that another user was experiencing. Importing by
reference is the only way to go, especially if you have to do
localization.

As for the hardware, we'd planned on new dual core systems and our
type of software requires a kickin' video card and RAM. We are near
our point in the cycle for an upgrade so it seems fairly logical.

Perhaps I'll try FM on our test system first.

Thanks for the input.

FM 7.1 Compatibility

2007-01-30 Thread William Gaffga

Hi all.

Now that it is out, I am looking at moving (at least some of) our Doc
Group to Vista. I don't particularly want to but we always do the
screenshots on the latest OS. So, that will of course require some
software upgrades.

One person on the Adobe Forums has with mostly success ... he had
some OLE issues but that is not surprising. Has anyone here tried FM
7.1 running on Vista? I'd be interested in the results. If I can
avoid an upgrade to 7.2 to save a few bucks that'd be nice.

TIA.

Adobe did indeed make a v7.0 for Mac. EBay is one option for getting

You're not likely to find it in a font except by pure, wild,

Re: Cross-platform font conundrum

2006-01-23 Thread William Gaffga
The cross-platform fonts thing can be a PITA. We use the same
OpenType fonts on the Mac PC for our template but the PC does not
recognize one of the variants of Futura Condensed so when we bring
the files to the PC (fairly rare) the fonts shift. Fortunately for us
we only generate Help from the PC so the fonts aren't a big enough
issue for us to modify the templates.

Nevertheless, it is a lesson in the idiosyncrasies of cross-platform
compatibility ... It is not easy to make it perfect, but technically
can be done with experimenting.

So, lose the PS fonts and go OpenType. That is the first step.

Hope That Helps.
