Hi Beverly
I'm not saying that it's a good idea, but you can make a PDF behave like
context-sensitive "help". We have done this recently for one of our
customers. The idea is that you insert "context hooks" (custom markers) in
your FrameMaker files and then use those markers in the URL which point
Hi,

I have a book of 40 files, graphics imported by reference; no text insets.
The translation company want me to provide files in MIF format. I am surprised
that Trados does not accept the files in .FM format. Is this normal?
I have never created MIF files before. At least,

Hi Stephen,
All translation memory systems (such as Trados) can import only
FrameMaker MIF files. Only if the translation agency offers DTP services,
they could convert binary FrameMaker files to MIF themselves.
You can export all files of a book individually. Or you can do this

Unless you are just using FrameMaker as a hobby,
I would go for the current version (Frame12).

For instance, you might need to open a .fm file from a colleague - and if that

With all respect to Maxwell, special offers do not answer Rick's point. Adobe

cause it to rethink.

I thought I'd invented the term 'wordmonger' (in 1995, during a bout of more

Don't forget that the people on the newer version will now be incompatible
(unless the engineering changes) with their non-cloudy colleagues; they'll
have to save as MIF until everyone is up to FM13.

Hi Steve,
Yes, you are right, I didn't answer Rick's question. I have no answer, other
than that Lynda.com provides training which wouldn't be used weekly in
production as FrameMaker usually is.
I do however feel that everyone should be aware that they only have 10 days

I assume, and maybe Max can enlighten us further, that any updates (or
upgrades) can be triggered or refused as desired by the user (or the users
administrator). That's the way it works with Adobe Creative Cloud at any rate.
So I think the Really Bad Thing scenario is unlikely.

Maybe there is somebody out their who can sell Robert their copy of FM 8 via a
license transfer and then use that money to buy a new FM 12 license. (Or,
better yet, work a swap via license transfer with him. I think he's on FM10.)

Helen, you can install the 30 day trial of Frame 12 from Adobe's site, and test
your templates in it.
I would expect them to still work, however.

Thanks to everyone replying to my question.
Well, I am definitely not using this for a hobby...can't think of any hobby
that would involve FM. (No offense intended.)
I am still not convinced which route to take - stay with FM8 or upgrade.
It sounds like with the patch I can stay with FM8 an
The FM10 license belongs to the company that bought my old employer. I
haven't upgraded my personal copy since FM6 since I haven't needed it
for freelancing since then.
Unless and until it's possible to integrate FrameMaker with a wiki, I
can't see using it again except for legacy docs.

Right on, about automatic upgrades. They should be optional.

Most translation companies have the FM software and saveAs MIF themselves. And
as Alison says, they then return them as FM files that have been adjusted via
DTP services that take care of overflows and other problems created as a result
the translation process.

Hi Framers,
I'm trying out my new Frame 12 by trying to produce an ebook in several
