In FM7.x, "Save as PDF" + Tagged PDF results in text missing from
shaded table cells in the resulting PDF

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

David's font cache deletion is actually the work-around that had to be used
before Microsoft fixed the problem.
Assuming you're on a Windows platform, use this to MS hotfix the missing
your problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909 (Gives details on the Hotfix)

http://support.microsoft.com/Hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=952909&kbln=en-us
(Direct Download Link)
This was released and documented in an Adobe blog:
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html

Note that this seems to be separate from the tagged table bug that Shlomo
mentioned, but it's still a required fix if you're on Windows.

Another main point is that from the information you posted, it's impossible
to tell whether both your FM version and your Acrobat program are fully
patched. Make sure they are And as long as you're on 7.2, don't use
SaveAs PDF.

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2009-02-01 Thread David Spreadbury
John,
This is a known issue, actually you have two issues.

One - Save As PDF has never really worked reliably.

Two - delete fntcache.dat, check in windows\system2 and i386 folders. Delete
both, if you have two, and then reboot. There is a fix from Microsoft that
is supposed to fix this issue. Yu should also be able to increase your
virtual memory to prevent it from happening again.

All,

PDF file. It appears to be totally random. For instance, one table will

have several blank rows blank followed by competed rows."

I am also using Frame 7.2, and I wonder if anyone else knows about this
problem and about any bugfixes.

My experience is that FrameMaker apparently puts the text in table cells
behind the table when saving as a PDF. When the table has shading, this
makes the text disappear entirely. Printing straight to the printer
works fine.

I have not found anything helpful on the Internet in general, which
strikes me as strange. Also, I'm sure this is unrelated to the previous
problem, but it does exacerbate the situation: Printing to my Acrobat
PDF "printer" fails for an unspecified reason and printing to a
PostScript file produces this cryptic error, which means I have
absolutely no way of making a pdf out of my document.

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-16 Thread Yves Barbion
Right,

like Schlomo said "check the PS driver resolution". I followed Dov Isaacs'
recommendations here for the Adobe PDF printer driver instance:

"Properties => Advanced (tab) => Printing Defaults ... (button) => Layout
(tab) => Advanced (button)

Open trees and make sure that the following are set
(other options leave at original default settings):

Graphic => Print Quality => 600dpi

Why? Gets around known Windows 2000/XP GDI bug associated
with large point size & high resolution text being converted
to outlines. Also gets around FrameMaker bug associated with
higher resolution settings in combination with large page sizes
(similar bug in other applications as well). Using this setting
does not restrict the resolution at which the PDF file can
print and has no known bad effects."

Good luck and best regards

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-16 Thread Ridder, Fred
But under the circumstances you describe, printing to the Adobe PDF
virtual printer is every bit as quick and easy as using Save As PDF,
(assuming that it is your default printer so that you don't have to
change printers), while having none of the gotchas of the Save As...
method.

Personally, I leave the Adobe PDF printer as my Windows default,
because 75% of the time that I'm printing a hard copy it's useful to
have a PDF as well as the hard copy. But if you can't live with
that approach, get the free SetPrint plug-in from Sundorne
http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm
This tool allows you to set up Adobe PDF as the default printer
*within*FM*, while leaving your regular h/w printer as the default for
all other applications.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Thank you, Schlomo,

I normally do print to .ps and distill using the watched folders
feature.
However, working on new development projects, I am constantly being
asked
for drafts of books other than the ones I am working on. Also, I often
have to publish specific page ranges. When it was working, the Save As
feature was a nice, quick shortcut.

I did get the Save As to work by deselecting the Generate Tagged PDF and

using the High Quality Print job option. The Press Quality job option
still erased text--both inside and outside of tables--even with tagged
PDF
deselected.

So odd.

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-16 Thread Art Campbell
Jessica,

I've been participating in a minor way with several other writers on
this bug in the
Adobe User forum, and there may be a solid work-around.

Try this: Assuming some flavor of Windows, delete the font cache file at
C:\WINDOWS\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT. Reboot the machine to force the font
cache to rebuild. Distill the file(s) again.

The problem seems to be related to how Windows handles some JKC
(oriental character) fonts, which can be huge files. A few people say
they've affected a permanent fix by deleting these fonts from their
systems, but I haven't tested that. I can solve the problem by
deleting and rebuilding the cache, however. It doesn't seem to be a
permanent fix, although it will work for a while. And no one has
ventured an opinion on what, exactly, it the problem, although Adobe's
Acrobat people are treating it as a bug now.

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-16 Thread jessica.nea...@handheld.com
Thank you, Schlomo,

I normally do print to .ps and distill using the watched folders feature.
However, working on new development projects, I am constantly being asked
for drafts of books other than the ones I am working on. Also, I often
have to publish specific page ranges. When it was working, the Save As
feature was a nice, quick shortcut.

I did get the Save As to work by deselecting the Generate Tagged PDF and
using the High Quality Print job option. The Press Quality job option
still erased text--both inside and outside of tables--even with tagged PDF
deselected.

So odd.

Turn off "Generate Tagged PDF", which may cause some text to be invisible,

in conjunction with "Save as PDF"
(see http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html#FM71 for a link to a sample
file
demonstrating this problem).

Better yet, avoid using "Save as PDF" -- instead, print to a .ps file and
distill.

If the problem persists, additional items to check are the PS driver
resolution and (less likely) the fonts being used.

Re: Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-16 Thread Yves Barbion

Right,

like Schlomo said "check the PS driver resolution". I followed Dov Isaacs'
recommendations here for the Adobe PDF printer driver instance:

"Properties => Advanced (tab) => Printing Defaults ... (button) => Layout
(tab) => Advanced (button)

Open trees and make sure that the following are set
(other options leave at original default settings):

   Graphic => Print Quality => 600dpi

Re: Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

Cheers,
Art

Not an answer to Jessica's problem, exactly, but I'm seeing something similar
with graphics, also never seen before.

I have a book that contains a lot of FrameMaker graphics. Without exception,
everything within the illustrations *except* the text does not show up on
screen, is not selectable, and does not show up on PDF. The author's original
PDF, done from PC FrameMaker, shows the graphical objects as expected.

I've messed with color views to make sure everything's visible, but without
success so far.

Is there anything that I've overlooked that can make FrameMaker graphical
objects invisible and non-selectable? It's as if all the components of an
illustration except the text simply aren't there.

Sounds like your "text" is callouts in text lines or frames within the
graphics frame, but that the viewing of the graphics themselves has been
turned off.

The author's original PDF, done from PC FrameMaker, shows the graphical
objects as expected.

Ignore this: I've found the problem and fixed it. (Sorry Jessica).

Re. your problem, could it be a font issue? I've never worked with a
version of FrameMaker in which 'Save as PDF' worked, but I'd guess that
whatever it uses, and Distiller, could be looking at different
populations of fonts.

Or maybe 'Save as PDF' is just still broken in 7.2?

View > Options > Graphics.

Sounds like your "text" is callouts in text lines or frames within the
graphics frame, but that the viewing of the graphics themselves has been
turned off.

Disappearing text using Save As to PDF

2006-10-13 Thread jessica.nea...@handheld.com
All,

Others may have experienced this, but I cannot find it.

I am using:

-Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0.7
-FrameMaker 7.2

When I use Save As to PDF my books, whole chunks of text disappear in the
PDF file. It appears to be totally random. For instance, one table will
have several blank rows blank followed by competed rows. I can't ascertain
a pattern (e.g., a bad paragraph or character tag). This occurs even when
I use the High Quality and Press Quality job options in Acrobat 7.

All the text does show up when I print to Scitex Brisque and Distill
manually, even when I use the Smallest File Size job option.

Save As to PDF worked beautifully when I was using Frame 7.1 and Acrobat
6. I can't figure out if the problem is Frame or Acrobat.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Or, better yet, figured out a solution?

Much appreciated,

Jessica Nealon

Mac FrameMaker 7.0, Acrobat 6 Pro
