FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Ridder, Fred
FWIW, the technique I use and have disseminated to all the
other writers in my group is this:
- in the same directory as your book file, make a copy of each
generated file template using the expected name (for example,
  booknameTOC.fm and booknameLOF.fm)
- use the book file's "Add" menu to add the generation details
(tags to collect, etc.) for each type of generated file; when
FrameMaker prompts you to update the book after adding
each of these file, decline that option.
- when all generated files have been added, update the book

It saves the time it takes to do the initial update/generate pass,
which can be substantial for large books or documents that
have graphics pasted into them instead of referenced.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Joe,
Any time you turn around, save the file. Changing the settings as you
did is the same as altering the text in the file. If you don't save,
you lose.

And, is the List file set to double-sided pagination?

Well, I hate to ask, but have you _ever_ saved the generated file(s), or
are you creating a new one each time you generate?

If the latter, that would explain a lot of your problems.

FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I had this problem with 7.0 once, but I was trying to set the
properties from within the component file.

Check the settings for the file in the book file. The book file
overrides the settings in the component file and changes its settings.
And, IIRC, the book file wants all its components to have the same
pagination, so check the settings for the other files, especially the
preceeding files.

Structured or unstructured -- it's all the same here.

Joe,

Have you tried to set these properties _in the book window_?

- select all the files you want to set up
- in Fromat > Page Layout > Pagination set 'make page count even'

=> The properties will be propageted to the individual files.

FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Art Campbell
First, check the internal pagination setting of the generated file and
make sure it's set to double-sided, not single sided.

Then check the pagination settings of the files that come before and
after it in the book; ideally they should all be set the same and at
the book level.

Also,

Art

No, FM handles generated files just fine. Have you ever saved the TOC
to file before regenerating it? If not, try that. Other than that,
ensure your file and book pagination settings are both set to "make
page count even".

It's not necessary for all book components to have the same pagination,
as someone else suggested. But it _is_ necessary that they be logically
compatible. First, make sure all the book's files are set to Double
Sided. Then, check the 1st Page Side settings of the LOT, the file
preceding it, and the file following it -- are these settings consistent
with each other?

You can't, for example, set the LOT to start on a right page, have an
even page count, and be followed by a file that starts on a left page.
If you do, FM has to ignore one of your settings, and I'm not sure which
one it will drop (maybe not the same one every time).

And as someone else mentioned, after you generate/update, you _are_
saving all the files in the book, right?

HTH!

preceding it, and the file following it -- are these settings consistent
with each other?

You can't, for example, set the LOT to start on a right page, have an
even page count, and be followed by a file that starts on a left page.
If you do, FM has to ignore one of your settings, and I'm not sure which
one it will drop (maybe not the same one every time).

And as someone else mentioned, after you generate/update, you _are_
saving all the files in the book, right?

HTH!

Re: FM driving me crazy!

First, check the internal pagination setting of the generated file and
make sure it's set to double-sided, not single sided.

Then check the pagination settings of the files that come before and
after it in the book; ideally they should all be set the same and at
the book level.

Also,

No, FM handles generated files just fine. Have you ever saved the TOC
to file before regenerating it? If not, try that. Other than that,
ensure your file and book pagination settings are both set to "make
page count even".

Re: FM driving me crazy!

Only thing I can think of is to make sure the pagination settings are the
same in the file and at the book level. Does that make a difference?

Thanks. I did that once, and it worked. However, every time I update the
book, it goes back to being one page!

I *wonder*, though, if this isn't really an artifact of generated files.
I update the pagination which fixes the problem, but then I regenerate,
which creates a new, "broken" file. I wonder if FM is simply not smart
enough to generate an extra page when it regenerates the list of tables.

Update the pagination for the whole book. FM applies the pagination
accross all files in the book.
