[Frameworks] Submit to Black Box @ Edinburgh International Film Festival
CALL FOR EXPERIMENTAL SUBMISSIONS – EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL DEADLINE: 6 FEBRUARY 2020 FESTIVAL DATES: 17 – 28 JUNE 2020 Hello Frameworkers! It’s January again and time for the (slightly delayed) annual invitation to submit to Black Box, the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s experimental strand. This year I’ll be splitting the work with Lydia Beilby who has moved over from Shorts to join me as Experimental Film Programmer. We’d like to offer fee waivers to Frameworkers again. To receive a FilmFreeway Fee waiver code please email the EIFF Submissions Team at submissi...@edfilmfest.org.uk and make sure to quote 'Frameworks' in the subject header. Please note the following: Shorts cannot be older than June 2019. Shorts cannot have been previously broadcasted or available online. UK shorts must be a Scottish Premiere. International Shorts must be a UK Premiere. Any questions please get in touch. I’ve received some emails already and if you haven’t received a reply yet it’s just because I’m still catching up with myself after a crazy intense year of writing. Please be assured that if you’ve sent me a link to your film it will be processed as normal and I’ll do my best to send confirmation of receipt. I won’t be at Rotterdam this year but Lydia will, and she’ll be happy to meet up. Drop her a line if you’re attending: lydia.bei...@edfilmfest.org.uk. All the very best for 2020! [Frameworks] Fee Waiver: Edinburgh International Film Festival
CALL FOR EXPERIMENTAL SUBMISSIONS – EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL DEADLINE: 7 February 2019 FESTIVAL DATES: 19 – 30 June 2019 Hi Frameworkers and happy new year to you all! I’m a bit behind with sending out this annual announcement, but as is usually the case, Frameworks subscribers are entitled to a submission fee waiver for the BLACK BOX experimental strand of EIFF. Many of you have screened in Black Box before and some of you have even made the trip to present your films in person so you know what a cool and welcoming place it is! 16mm, 35mm, digital: all are welcome! Shorts and mid-length films are preferred, but features are also considered. The procedure is slightly different this year. As some of you may know, I’m working on a book with a looming deadline and therefore my emailing and submission processing time is severely limited. If you would like to submit, please contact Melissa Conneely, the Submissions Co-ordinator at submissi...@edfilmfest.org.uk<mailto:submissi...@edfilmfest.org.uk> with the subject line clearly marked FRAMEWORKS FEE WAIVER and you’ll receive the relevant forms. Some people are emailing me directly with links – this is fine and your film(s) will be processed, but you may not receive a response from me for some time! I’ll try to answer email queries as quickly as possible but please be patient. PLEASE NOTE: a UK premiere is required for all feature films and international short films, and works should be no more than 12 months old at the time of the Festival. If your film can be viewed online without a password it will unfortunately be ineligible. A Scottish premiere is a requirement for UK short films. Rules and regs here: https://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/press-industry/submissions/submission-rules-and-regulations. I will be attending the Rotterdam Film Festival from Thursday 24th to Monday 28th. Come and say hello. I look forward to seeing your work/chatting to you/having a beer together etc. Peace and love, as always. Re: [Frameworks] Analog and digital
I'm wondering how to think through some of these issues on a theoretical level, a way of teasing out the complexities around medium-specificity, aura, nostalgia etc. Someone mentioned hybrid works, those that bring together the qualities of film and (digital) video and the different things that can be done in each medium. I've been looking at some films by Thorsten Fleisch ('Wound Footage'), Shambhavi Kaul ('Scene 32') and Makino Takashi. I was excited to see the thread developing in this area and then disappointed to see it fade so quickly. I love film, deeply, and lose sleep over the thought of its demise (really!), but I wonder how film and video might be able to talk to each other, to have the conversation that they really need to have, to work things out, accept their differences ... I wonder how theory might follow, how our understanding of film/video aesthetics might be changed as a result. There has been some (well, a lot!) of work on medium-specificity in the digital era but none of it seems to look at hybridity, especially in terms of the embodied responses that some Frameworkers have been referring to. Does anyone know of work in this area? I think this has been a fascinating and inspiring thread. The voices of film lovers should be heard. Play loud! Kim Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2011 00:23:09 -0400 From: ste...@gladstonefilms.com To: frameworks@jonasmekasfilms.com Subject: Re: [Frameworks] Analog and digital On 8/27/11 9:12 PM, Flick Harrison wrote: I'd call film analog because each grain is exposed to a light of varying colour and brightness, for any amount of time, focused by any amount, then processed with more or less chemicals and time, all of which are analog variables. The placement of grain on a frame is also random and analog. Digital - provides a precise voltage state (either on or off) for each photosite/pixel. Here is the thing. 1. If you say digital is ones and zeroes you are referring to and analog representation of on and off. It isn't really ones and zeroes. Noise floor and strength of signal, and signal degradation will all affect how this is represented. In digital it is either on or off, if a signal is above the off state but not fully at the on state, then what? It is rounded either up or down to on or off. This can lead to various issues in either capture, or display. 2. All imagers are ANALOG. In the process of converting the light striking the imager (film or electronic sensor) to an electronic version (um analog) for storage and later display it is sampled and converted to numerical values. The more samples per second, the smoother the resulting waveforms will be when the digital information is reconverted to analog for display. The more pixels as well, equates to smoother transitions. -- Steven Gladstone New York Based Cinematographer Gladstone films Blog - http://indiekicker.reelgrok.com/ http://www.blakehousemovie.com http://www.gladstonefilms.com 917-886-5858 ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
