Which Laptop for FreeBSD

2006-04-05 Thread David Schulz

Hello all,

i would like to buy a new Laptop in the very near future, and of course
it has to run my favourite OS. I have never searched for a Laptop, and
now that i did i am overwhelmed with the confusing variety of different
Brands and Models. One of the big Questions i am having is; Should i
look for a 64 bit Laptop or better not? I am just not sure wheter or not
64bit will come trough this year on Laptops, and how well is it (and
will it be) supported by FreeBSD. I know that there are some Internet
Sites which try to maintain some data about linux / unix on laptops, but
i found them to be quite outdated. I am looking for a Workstation
replacement kind of Laptop, and it must have a DVI out for my Monitor. I
kind of would like to go with 64bit, since its supposedly the future, if
this isnt quite the time for 64bit Laptops yet, please someone educate me.

If there is anyone out there, that can recommend a new Laptop (Price is
not an issue) that runs FreeBSD nicely, please let me know, i would most
appreciate it.

Thanks and best regards,
David

i have had the exact same thing when running portupgrade -ra on my

How do I get my keyboard working again?

Piping output from serial device to file does not want to work

2006-09-14 Thread David Schulz

Hello,

Data coming from /dev/cuad0 looks like this when read using cat /dev/
cuad0 :

->Snippet start
09/15/06 11:17AM 8003 13 17909013923793510 00:10'58

  Date TimeExt CODial NumberRing Duration
Acc code CD

09/15/06 11:17AM 8072 13 17909013923793510
00:00'00TR

09/15/06 11:27AM 8036 050'00
00:30'17TR

->Snipped end

Now i would like to strip away the blank lines, the line with Date,
and the ---Line and then pipe it to a logfile, so the output looks like

->Snippet start
09/15/06 11:17AM 8072 13 17909013923793510
00:00'00TR
09/15/06 11:17AM 8072 13 17909013923793510
00:00'00TR
09/15/06 11:17AM 8072 13 17909013923793510
00:00'00TR
09/15/06 11:17AM 8072 13 17909013923793510
00:00'00TR

->Snipped end

So using this command : egrep -v -e "\---|^$|Date" -D read /dev/
cuad0 , works, and puts out the data to stdout for me to see, but
when i want to pipe it to a file, using egrep -v -e "\---|^$|Date" -
D read /dev/cuad0 >> logfile , then never any data appears in the
logfile. Can anyone tell me wht that is, and maybe suggest a better
way to do this?

Thanks a lot,
David

Zabbix Port

Hello,

The /usr/ports/net-mgmt/zabbix Port consists out of two components,
Server and Agent. I would like to install the Agent only, so it
shouldnt need all these large dependencies such as mysql etc, but i
cant figure out how to do that. I skimmed trough the Makefile, and
it mentions things about ZABBIX_AGENT_ONLY , but i can figure out how
to turn that knob. Can anyone tell me please?

IPFW and PF

2006-10-28 Thread David Schulz

Hi all,

IPFW seems to be the same IPFW that is used on MacOSX, so it seems to
make sense to learn and lean on IPFW when using in a mixed Machine
Environment. On the other side, many People seem to say PF is easier
to manage once a setup gets complicated. As usual, both sides have
their own valid points. My question though is not whether any of the
two , IPFW of PF is better then the other, but which of the two do
you use, and why?

NIC not coming up when Ethernet Cable is replugged

2006-11-05 Thread David Schulz

Hello all,

i am having a strange Problem, which was more apparent under FreeBSD
5.5 and 6.0, but still happens to me under 6.1, on different machines
with different NIC`s.

Basically when during the day something happens to my Machines
Network Connection, for example someone pulls out the Cable, when it
is re-plugged in, sometimes it doesn't become active anymore. It
doesn't says No Carrier under ifconfig, but the Machine cannot be
pinged and also cannot ping another host. Restarting the Machine is
no help.Helping is logging in as root, and issuing a ifconfig vr0
down followed by a ifconfig vr0 up. Then there is a console message
saying vr0: Using force reset command. After that everything works
again as usual. For some machines this is a real problem for me
because they dont have Keyboard Mouse or Monitor, and i cant get in
remotely.

Thanks for any Ideas,

David

Huawei UMTS Wireless Modem

2006-11-09 Thread David Schulz

Hello all,

i have a Huawei UMTS wireless Modem, which plugs into a USB Slot, and

work under FreeBSD? After plugging it in, dmesg just reports ugen0:
Huawei Mobile, rev 1.01 . addr 3 . It doesn't just respond to normal

Zabbix Port out of Date

Version in the Ports is going to get updated. I have send the Port-
maintainer two E-Mails with long breaks between them from two
different Mail Accounts, but there isn't a response. So my question

fetch - size of remote file is not known

to be honest, i actually like the sys-install program. i did it so

An understatement. There are situations where sysinstall is
positively
quixotic. I don't mind the simple character-based interface. But
I do

find it worrying that I sometimes cannot know what sysinstall will do
next. In any case, this is bad publicity for FreeBSD since
sysinstall

is the first bit of FreeBSD they encounter.

All of this is true.

Time and again we hear rumors about a new installation program.
Is it
actually nearing completion? Keep in mind that many of us do not
even

consider getting involved as long as we believe a better program is
under way.

There is no new installation program underway.

This comes up every year or so on the various discussion lists,
everyone

bashes sysinstall and claims it makes FreeBSD look bad and when are
we going to get a replacement, etc. The arguments die away when faced
with the following cold realities:

1) You can probably get consensus from everyone that sysinstall is
ugly

and needs replacement. But your never going to get any consensus on
what the replaement should look like. And any replacement is going to
have places where the user cannot know what it's going to do next,
that

is just the nature of install programs - it is due to the fact that
different people
interpret things differently. What is obvious to you isn't obvious to
someone
else. And, when is the install program going to cross the line
between

acting as a install program and acting as a training video?

Review the steps needed to install a self-signed SSL certificate into
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, and then come back and tell me that
those steps are more intuitive than sysinstall. Yeah, right. Face
the

facts, boys. Every year, computers get more complex to operate, and
every year, the Average User is paying more and more to have a tech
set the computer up for them. Open your eyes and look around. People
think nothing of paying $30 to have a tech install Microsoft Office
on their

new Windows PC for God's sake.

Who really is sysinstall's audience? The average l-user? Or the
average
technician? If it's the average tech, then who the hell cares how
ugly
sysinstall is? You think sysinstall is bad, you ought to see the
diagnostic

interface
the average auto mechanic has to use to troubleshoot your car. If
you are

not the ultimate end-user for the FreeBSD system your installing, then
you don't have any moral ground to make a call for pussifying the
FreeBSD
install program. I can tell you that for myself, every FreeBSD
system I've
installed in the last year and a half has been for OTHERS to use,
NOT ME.

2) There's an immense amount of effort that has gone into
sysinstall and
it's libraries. Your talking about taking on an old, established
program

that
is pretty throughly debugged, a program that is like an octopus in the
amount of icky, ugly mucking around with config files and such that
it does,

and replacing this with a new program that is going to have all of the
intelligence and institutional knowledge in it that the old program
does.

And furthermore if this replacement is to ever get traction among the
userbase it's going to have to work PERFECTLY in the FIRST version
that is released, otherwise everyone is just going to turn their
back on it

and keep using the existing sysinstall.

3) The largest complaint about sysinstall is that it's not
graphical. The

problem is that a graphical installation program has some -severe-
constraints on it. First, it has to work in ALL instances. That
means,

640x480x16 colors VGA screen. You have a lot of people out there
installing on systems that have, for example, monitors with inadequate
horizontal/vertical frequency ranges and very capabable video cards,
unless you force the X-server to use the original VGA resolution,
it's going
to overdrive those monitors and the user is going to see a black
screen

when the installation program comes up. And the only way FreeBSD
is going to get a graphical anything is by using Xorg, and FreeBSD
does

not maintain that distribution - so we are now dependent on the Xorg
group writing their code with no bugs for our installation program
to work.

4) Installation programs by and large are not "fun" programs to work
on. Most developers avoid them. They are thankless ta

Loosing Ethernet Connectivity

2007-01-21 Thread David Schulz

Hello all,

every once in a while i have a machine (6.1) that out of the blue,
sometimes after days, some after 6 months, looses Ethernet
Connectivity. My Machines just run some Service, and have no
Keyboard / Mouse or Monitor. When the Machine goes down, eg, i am
unable to ping it from another Machine on the Network, even
restarting the machine using "reboot" will not fix the Problem. The
only way to fix it is to login as root, and issue a "ifconfig vr0
down && ifconfig vr0 up". Then a dmesg Message appears : "vr0: Using
force reset command.", and after that i can successfully ping the
machine again. I have had this Problem on different machines with
different Network Cards, on different Ethernet Cables, and with
FreeBSD Versions 5.5 until 6.1.

Can anyone please help me to understand and possibly even fix this
Problem?

Hey,

sure, i can do a script which does the up-down when it cant ping the
router or something, but to be honest i think that is not a
production solution. cheap nic..maybe, some of the nics in question
where onboard ones, which are not the best ones out there, but
others, such as the 3COM 3c90b5 Fast Etherlink XL PCI, is that also a
shitty one? I also have a tried a simple D-LINK and a Realtek one. It
seems that under a certain condition FreeBSD just shuts down its
Networking, and if thats true i wonder if that can be done remotely,
that would not be cool.

When something is frequently erratic, suspect software. But your
problem looks like intermittent hardware. I have observed that the
LAN

will be marked down if you boot without it connected. Then if you
connect the LAN and click a web bookmark, it will recover
automatically

without human intervention.

CAT5 LAN cables with RJ45 plugs are not very robust. And people
tend to
handle them carelessly... stepping on them, tripping over them etc.
They

are usually single strand copper which can break inside the insulation
with frequent flexing. The RJ45 plugs have poor strain relief such
that
the outer insulation pulls out of the plug creating another failure
point.

So for vexing problems like yours, I would examine the hardware very
closely.

Those Images then i want to make accessible to old Macintosh PowerPC
Machines, so the Users can access one or two Applications that only
run under Windows XP. I would like to know from anyone in a similar
situation how to accomplish this best.

Currently, I pretty much have it setup for myself, so when i open X11
on my PowerPC Machine, and type in ssh -X server_address windows_xp ,
i do get an instance of Windows XP on my PowerPC Machine.

The trouble here for now is server and network performance. I would
like to know if anyone of you has any suggestions for me on how i can
make the network load as little as possible. I read that freenx is
offering really good responsiveness, but unfortunately it is marked as
broken on my System using FreeBSD Version 6.3.

Thanks and best regards,
David Schulz

noone mentioned www.win4bsd.com , win4bsd can be used to run a windows
machine from within freebsd nicely. performance is pretty good also.

I'm planning to do something similar but have moved to

Hey,

to download it:
For Win4BSD: ftp://ftp.vbridges.com/pub/releases/bsd/pro/1.1/Win4BSD-1.1.iso
I think you can try the trial for 30 days, after that, its 29.99USD

Thanks,

i think it uses kemu, but its really a simple installation process,
the whole thing is just a package, contained in the iso image i linked

does it need special requirements on kernel versions, modules etc?

i will look at it for fun, but - i always prefer "normal" than
"simple" installation process because it's good to know what
actually happened.

Re: spamfilter

2006-08-02 Thread David Schulz
I can only recommend a program called dspam, which is also in the
ports. I personally had a very hard time to install and configure it,
so this is not a praise only, but once i had it running it almost
immediately started taking care on 99 percent of my spam.

I'm running SpamAssassin and spamass-milter. They seem to do an
 okay job.

While I run (and like) this combination myself, there are at
least two caveats of which one ought to be aware:

1) spamd (part of SpamAssassin) is written in perl. This is
fine for a workstation, not so much for a high-volume mail server.

This is because SpamAssassin is CPU and memory intensive. High-
volume, I wouldn't see running on anything less than a dual 2.8ghz
with a bare minimum of 4gig ram (8 would be better).

2) installing spamass-milter requires rebuilding sendmail. (I
have no idea about other MTAs.) This usually sounds more
frightening than it is, but can still lead to complications.
