disabling my mouse nipple

2006-01-01 Thread Jason Dusek
i'm using a dell d600 with 6.0-STABLE and Xorg on it. my mouse nipple
is crazy|damaged: sometimes when i type keys next to it - 't', 'y',
'f', 'g', 'h', 'j', 'v', 'b', 'n' - the mouse pointer goes zooming
across the screen, usually to the left.

i don't know anything about the underlying hardware or drivers, so i
would like to disable the mouse nipple at startup until i make time to
consult a professional.

i also have a touchpad, but i can't figure out which device is the
touchpad and which is the mouse nipple - my dmesg only lists one
device as a mouse.

Zend Studio Installed Not

2004-10-27 Thread Jason Dusek
I tried to install Zend Studio today, but after make all something funny
happened: it popped up a window and started asking me questions. I told it to
cancel - I'd run the install target later.

When I try to run install, I get this:
  # make install
  ===  Installing for ZendStudio-3.5.1
  ===   ZendStudio-3.5.1 depends on file: /compat/linux/etc/redhat-release -
  found
  ===   Generating temporary packing list
=== Checking if devel/zendstudio already installed
pkg_info: package bsdpan-IO-stringy-2.109 has no origin recorded
pkg_info: package bsdpan-OLE-Storage_Lite-0.13 has no origin recorded
pkg_info: package bsdpan-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel-0.2603 has no origin recorded
  ===   ZendStudio-3.5.1 is already installed
You may wish to ``make deinstall'' and install this port again
by ``make reinstall'' to upgrade it properly.
If you really wish to overwrite the old port of devel/zendstudio
without deleting it first, set the variable FORCE_PKG_REGISTER
in your environment or the make install command line.
  *** Error code 1
so then I run make deinstall:
  # make deinstall
  ===  Deinstalling for devel/zendstudio
pkg_info: package bsdpan-IO-stringy-2.109 has no origin recorded
pkg_info: package bsdpan-OLE-Storage_Lite-0.13 has no origin recorded
pkg_info: package bsdpan-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel-0.2603 has no origin recorded
  ===   ZendStudio not installed, skipping
I forced the install, by setting FORCE_PKG_REGISTER like it says above, and
now I have a copy of Zend Studio that doesn't work. The uninstall script that
comes with Zend Studio is the only thing that works. What is the problem with my
ports tree?

Strange Internet Problems

2004-09-06 Thread Jason Dusek
In certain places, I am unable to get on the internet even though I am
recognized by the DHCP server and assigned an IP address. In most cases, I am
not able to ping anything, but even when I can (for example at my parents'
house, which is serviced by MSN) my browser times out. What is the name of this
problem, and which section of the docs will help me to fix it?

Mozilla linuxpluginwrapper

2004-09-05 Thread Jason Dusek
Yesterday, I built the linuxpluginwrapper without error. However, Mozilla seems
to have trouble loading the plugins:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
  /usr/local/lib/linux-flashplugin6/libflashplayer.so
  [Shared object libpthread.so.0 not found,
  required by libflashplayer.so]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
  /usr/local/Acrobat5/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so
[Shared object libc.so.6 not found, required by nppdf.so]
But the libraries seem to be on my system, in /usr/compat/linux:
   locate libpthread.so.0 locate libc.so.6
  /usr/compat/linux/lib/libpthread.so.0
  /usr/compat/linux/lib/libc.so.6
This is probably something more general than a flash or mozilla problem -
presumable there is something I need to know about Linux libraries that I don't
understand yet.

No /dev/io

2004-08-12 Thread Jason Dusek
I just rebuilt my system and put Xorg on it. I'm running CURRENT
(grabbed the source yesterday). When I try to start X, I got the
following error:
xf86EnableIO: Failed to open /dev/io for extended I/O
Lo and behold, I have no /dev/io. How did that happen? And what do I do
to fix it? There is a fix in the mailing lists - add device io and
rebuild the kernel - so I just did that and got yet another error:
xf86MapVidMem: Address 0xfcff outside allowable range
Any help on this one would be appreciated. I just cvsupped and am
rebuilding my world as we speak - but that's going to take a little
while and I was hoping to get some feedback in the interim.

Re: No /dev/io

2004-08-12 Thread Jason Dusek
Well, I have certainly learnt my lesson. And I have been kicking myself
all afternoon. From now on, I will peruse the list carefully before
updating. Scout's honor.

At the risk of exposing myself to more abuse, I have another question -
how do I make the system automatically load io.ko and mem.ko when it
boots? For that matter, how do I make it load ndis.ko? I am having
trouble finding the generalized load x.ko at boot instruction. Does it
go in rc.conf?

C include question

2004-08-04 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I would like to compile some OpenGL stuff on my BSD box. Unfortunately, the GL
libraries are not in /usr/include/GL - they are in /usr/X11R6/include/GL and my
C compiler does not see that by default.

One easy way around this is, I think, to just soft link /usr/X11R6/include/* to
/usr/include/ - but that would defeat the point of seperating the X11 includes
from the system includes. What is the right way to set this up so that my C
compiler, no matter which one it is, will always find the GL libraries? Is there
some kind of 'cc.conf' somewhere in the same sense as there is a 'make.conf'?

I am new to C - in fact this OpenGL stuff is my first exposure to it. I'm sure
that this is an elementary question, and the only reason that I post it to the
list is that I am trying to find a way to solve my problem that is more in
keeping with BSD philosophy than simply moving /usr/X11R6/include into /usr/include.

Re: C include question

2004-08-04 Thread Jason Dusek
No, because the libs have include statements in them. For example, in my source
code I might write:

  #include /usr/X11R6/include/GL/glut.h
But this fails because glut.h has the following statements in it:
  #include gl.h
  #inlcude glu.h
For it to work, I would have to ammend it to say:
  #include gl.h
  #inlcude glu.h
But at the point where I am rewriting bits of the standard GL libraries, it's
time to take a different approach.

Tomcat Goes Its Own Way

2004-07-16 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I am having a weird problem with Tomcat:
If I go into the jsp examples and modify the .jspx files, my changes have no
effect on how they are executed! I can even delete them, it doesn't matter -
they run just as before. But deleting or modifying .html files in the same
directory has the expected effected. I have tried restarting Tomcat, and I 've
even rebooted my machine - it doesn't seem to make any difference.

How is this happening? Does Tomcat keep redundant copies of the .jspx files
somewhere?

So how do I use my wireless card? Is there some command that I run to turn it on

FAILURE - ATAPI_RESET no interrupt

2004-07-13 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
My CD-ROM has a rather discouraging message attached to it:
  ata1-master: FAILURE - ATAPI_RESET no interrupt
  acd0: CDRW QSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM SBW242U at ata1-master PIO4
(The whole dmesg is attached to this email.) What does 'FAILURE - ATAPI_RESET no
interrupt' mean in this context?

I recently rebuilt my world and kernel with source from current. I am using a
custom kernel (also attached) that got along fine with the CD drive before I
rebuilt the world. A generic kernel can read the drive okay - but I wanted to
have someone else look at this one before I started the laborious process of
removing devices one by one to get at the cause of my trouble.

kldload won't load

2004-07-12 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
Yesterday I built the ndis module (ndis.ko) but I can't seem to load it:
  5 # ls /sys/modules/ndis/ | grep 'ndis'

  ndis.kld
  ndis.ko
  subr_ndis.o
  6 # kldload -v /sys/modules/ndis/ndis.ko
kldload: can't load /sys/modules/ndis/ndis.ko: No such file or directory
I'm running 5.2.1, and I have not done a buildworld since I installed from the

If possible, we should printf() as well, since linker errors may not

Redirecting Output Into The Copy Buffer

2004-07-12 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
Most of the time, when I click the third mouse button something gets pasted
wherever my cursor is. Presumably it gets pasted from some buffer somewhere,
let's call it the X buffer or buffer X. Is there some way to redirect the output
of a terminal command into the X buffer? Then I can run something like this:

5 # dmesg [wherever the X buffer is]
and then click the third button to drop the output into a mail message.

hello jason,
if you're trying to mount a 'blank' cd, i do not believe that it will work,
because there is no 'filesystem' to mount. please note that the same is
true of music cds. they have no 'filesystem' in the unix sense and cannot
be mounted. both, however, can be manipulated by programs (ex. disc
burners or music players/rippers).
if you're doing something other than what i suggest above and are still not
able to mount your 'filesystem' disc, please let us know what type of disc
it is and what is on it.
hope that this helps.

mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0c /cdrom
Also, if you're trying to mount a DVD instead of a CD, you may need to

What does this error mean? What does it mean in reference to a hard

The superblock is a chunk of disk that has housekeeping information
like the amount of free space, where to find free inodes, and so on.
The error can mean pretty much the same things no matter what the
medium. It might mean that you've specified the wrong filesystem --
mount (which defaults to FreeBSD's UFS filesystem) instead of mount
-t cd9660, say. It might also mean that the the filesystem hasn't been
formatted yet, or (if a CD) that you've burned a coaster. Or, it might
mean that you are about to be very grateful for your carefully-followed
backup plan. :-)

Can't Mount Optical Drive

2004-07-10 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I'm on a Dell Latitude D600 with a CD-RW/DVD-R. When I try to mount the
drive I get an error:

 5 # mount /dev/acd0 /cdrom
 mount: /dev/acd0: Input/output error
But dmesg says:
 acd0: CDRW QSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM SBW242U at ata1-master PIO4
So although my drive is recognized correctly, it doesn't work with
FreeBSD. But it worked for building and installing FreeBSD a few days
ago, so I know the drive is functional. How do I get the drive to mount?
Does it make any difference that I am running GNOME 2.6?

Can't Mount USB Flash Drive

2004-07-10 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I have a Dell D600, and I count mount flash devices on it. They show up in
dmesg. Here I put the drive in the top one, pull it out and stick it in the
bottom one, and then put it back in the top one:

ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2
  ugen0: at uhub0 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected
  ugen0: detached
ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2
  ugen0: at uhub0 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected
  ugen0: detached
ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2
Strangely, they show up as the same address on the same device. When I try to
mount ugen0, I get a message that sayeth:

  Block device required.
What does this mean? What do I do?

Huh...you should have /dev/acd0c already. Try going to /dev and
running:
sh ./MAKEDEV acd
sh ./MAKEDEV cd
and try it again. If it *still* doesn't work, I would wonder if there's
a problem with this particular disk. Is it a rewritable? Do you have
a known-good CD that you can try, or another machine you can try the
problematic disk on?
Remember, /dev/cd0c is to be used if this is a DVD you're trying to
mount. (That said, I'm going by memory here, and you *may* be able
to get away with mounting a DVD using /dev/acd0c.)

Do I need to create some directories for this to work? How will my
computer know what directories to attach the drive to?

The mount command (or its variants like mount_cd9660) usually takes
two arguments: the device you want to mount, and where you want to
mount it. (I'm ignoring other, hyphenated arguments like -o rw
and so on.) So for:

mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0c /cdrom
you're saying that you want the device /dev/acd0c to be made available at
the *already-existing* directory /cdrom. (So yes, the mount point -- the
directory you want to mount the device at -- has to be present already.)
You can leave out one or the other argument (but not both) if there's
an entry for the device in /etc/fstab. For example, you might have this
entry:
/dev/acd0c /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0
which would mean you could get away with either

mount /cdrom
or

mount /dev/acd0c

reinstall world

2004-07-10 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I gave my entire laptop's hard drive to FreeBSD, but I am beginning to have
second thoughts - a lot of my devices don't work. I think I might try dual
booting FreeBSD and, say, Gentoo. So this will probably work, because I'm only
using a small portion of the disk at present:

  17 root # df -m
Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
  /dev/ad0s1a 247 123 10454%/
  devfs 00 0 100%/dev
  /dev/ad0s1g 89310 8216 0%/home
  /dev/ad0s1e 9890 910 0%/tmp
  /dev/ad0s1f 24790 3621 1918616%/usr
  /dev/ad0s1d 989 37 872 4%/var
What is a good way to make space on my disk? If I just repartition /usr and
/home, I'll probably screw them up. So if I tar up each of the partitions, and
maybe etc and some other junk as well, and then:

  1. Reformat and reinstall. Put on Gentoo and BSD.
  2. Go into the BSD slice and nuke everything, then unpack my tarballs.
do I have a good chance of everything working right?

Investigative Computing

2004-06-02 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi Everyone,
I wrote in earlier with a problem on my Compaq Presario R3000 - when I
try to install 5.2.1 from the cd, I can't boot the kernel - after I pick
a kernel, the machine powers down.

What do I do to figure out how to fix this thing? I've tried several
Linux distributions as well - they are Gentoo, Fedora and Jollix (A
German Gentoo derivative). I was able to install Fedora successfully,
and all the other Linuxes can boot from the cd. Jollix successfully
starts X and brings up a KDE desktop. So it seems that getting Open
Source to work on this machine is not so impossible - and I would really
like to have FreeBSD on it if I could.

If the problem lay in the ACPI (my first guess) how would I fix it? Is
there something I could lift from one of the Linux distros to get my box
to work?

5.2.1 on Presario R3000

2004-05-29 Thread Jason Dusek
I'm sorry, I forgot the subject line last time.
Hi All,
I am installing 5.2.1 on a Compaq Presario R3000. I made the CDs with
Roxio
Classic Creator on the Windows side.

The machine gets to the boot select screen okay, but no matter what
boot option
I go with the machine powers down. I've tried option 2 (FreeBSD without
ACPI)
several times.

So, what do I do now? This machine is hardly my first choice, but it's
a gift
and I'm stuck with it. It's got nice hardware, but there just seems to
be no way
around the Compaq curse...

So, anyway, user questions should not be surprising.
(But please ask reasonably specific questions or it is hard to
 give a relevant answer)

 jerry
Fair Enough,
My question is 'how do I edit a disklabel?' I assume that I am supposed
to add an 'e' partition, but it seems that the c partition has eaten my
disk. The partition file looks like this:

...stuff in the front omitted...
8 partitions:
#size offsetfstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg]
  c: 7816403704.2BSD 2048 1638489 # (Cyl.0 -
12406*)

Does this mean that my disk is 'dangerously dedicated'? Isn't the fstype
supposed to be 'ufs'? How do I toggle soft updates? I want to use this
disk as backup media, so is one undifferentiated partition a good idea?

Through a combination of this list's suggestions, I managed to get fdisk
to successfully operate on my disk. Thanks. However, the step about
'editing my label' as given in the handbook:

# disklabel -e da1s1 # Edit the disklabel just created.
is not something I really understand. Where is some nice documentation
on this?
man disklabel is pretty comprehensive.

Yes. But, you have to read it together with man fdisk to make any
sense of it and even then the writing is rather convoluted and confusing.
They could both use a complete systematic rewrite. I don't think I
know enough of the extra stuff (the stuff I don't usually use) to do
it or I would try it.

So, anyway, user questions should not be surprising.
(But please ask reasonably specific questions or it is hard to
give a relevant answer)

Broken Disk

2004-05-21 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi,
I am trying to put a new disk on my system. I read the description of
the process in FreeBSD Unleashed and apparently I misunderstood it,
because I ended up installing a boot manager on the new disk. Now I can
not mount it - I get error messages like:

# mount /dev/ad1e /mnt/backup
operation not permitted
How do I 'start over'? I have tried to add this disk many times with
/stand/sysinstall. Eventually I gave up and went to the command line
utilities as outlined in the handbook. The error I got was interesting,
but I have no idea what it means:

# fdisk -BI ad1
*** Working on device /dev/ad1 ***
fdisk: invalid fdisk partition table found

Setting Up IMAP

2004-05-12 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi Everyone,

I have two bsd machines that have seperate connections to the internet.
I set up one of them with IMAP-UW and stunnel. So I set up Kmail on the
other one with a recieving account configured to get mail from port 993
using TLS authentication. This sort of works, but there are interesting
problems:

 Problem 1
My mail server's certificate 'fails' the authenticity test because it is
self-assigned. Why is this bad (aren't I *supposed* to get a certificate
with
 # make cert
in the stunnel port?) and what do I do to get a better certificate?

 Problem 2
Kmail allows me accept the bad certificate and logs in succesfully. It
then shows me my *entire* home directory, not just the mail folder. Why
does this happen?

Graphical Hex Editor

2004-05-12 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi List,

Which hex editor in the ports is good for a guy who doesn't know vi? I
am trying to figure out bvi, but of course I spend more time trying to
figure out the commands than I spend on my hex codes!

Re: Graphical Hex Editor

Unfortunately, I do not have KDE. Is there some kind of EMACS mode for
hexediting?

If you have KDE installed there is always khexedit

Kill Sendmail

How do I kill sendmail? I set 'sendmail_enable=no' in /etc/rc.conf but
when I reboot the mail daemon is still up.

Nested Xdmcp

2004-05-04 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi Kids,

I have an interesting problem. I would like to do a nested login to a
remote machine using xdmcp. My machine is running 4.9BSD and the latest
GNOME release. The other machine is running 4.9BSD and KDE. So, here's
what I know:

On my machine, both xdmcp and nested logins work. However, they don't
work together. When I initiate a nested session and then select 'xdmcp'
from 'actions' in the Gnome Display Manager, the nested window simply
dissappears. Why?

When I try to do an unnested login to the remote machine, I can't find
it - apparently it has to be configured to serve the screen to
outsiders. So, what do I do about this?

Thanks for your help guys.

Port Hacking

2004-04-18 Thread Jason Dusek
Hi Everyone,

I would like to edit the code for one of my ports (Inkscape, a graphics
tool for GNOME) and then wrap it up in a tarball, dump it into distfiles
and reinstall it. However, the ports system hits me with a checksum
mismatch. What do I do about it?

When my system boots up, it tries to start the 'usbdThis' daemon and

What files do I need to dig in to fix this problem?
