Sorry again and good luck for the upgrade!

Thanks. It's what I am using, since the upgrade script seems to have been

Which one of these two is the correct version?

Hello FreeBSD Gnome users,

As for the price, I'm thinking of 100 000 HUF (about 400 EUR) as *very*
maximum. The price is important, but the first point is more important at
all...I color laser printer would be cool if this amount of money is

My suggestion would be a used HP LaserJet 4050, preferably with a JetDirect
network interface. I've used them as network printers for FreeBSD with
excellent results, they're built well and cheap to run. Have not tried toner
refilling, though.

You could probably buy a color laser with mostly-empty starter toner at
this price, but replacing supplies could cost as much or more than the
printer.

I just purchased a Brother-2070N that works fine. $130.oo from
Costco with a 1500 page toner cartdridge. It has a network
interface built in too.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11037212whse=BCtopnav=browse=

Shit... it's $40.oo cheaper this week than it was two weeks ago when
I bought mine!

the HP's would print envelopes better than the Brother.

I haven't found any printer that really works well with envelopes
(unless you count some Pitney Bowes printers that are designed
specifically for printing high volumes of flyers, envelopes and
 brochures).

An original Apple Stylewriter 1200 was exceptional at envelopes. The
printer most closely resembled the wringer on my grandmother's classic
Maytag washer when I was a kid. Straight path, no bend, printer was
about 3 thick.

Have been feeding about 1500 envelopes per year between a pair of HP-990
and HP-970 inkjets. The older 970 is faster but doesn't fully release
the envelope on eject and will wad it up if one doesn't pull it out
before the next starts. The 990 often pauses before starting, then
spends extra time with optical sensors looking for page edges. And about
half the time pulls a #10 envelope thru cocked at an angle. I use them
anyway.

Recently the 990 feed screwed up to the point it was not usable. Took it
out to the garage and blew it out with compressed air. Didn't find any
smoking guns so I didn't have much hope, but that did the trick.

Have not been terribly happy with HP inkjets and my statement above
is based on the apparent observation the HP inkjet crew has been
 designing lasers lately.

I have an HP Photosmart 7360 that I like, largely because I don't use it
very much, and it's designed so that it can through long periods of
 inactivity without clogging the nozzles.

In the HP print driver there is an option deep in the settings for
black only. The default setting mixes color with black to print text.
Black text looks awful if the color cartridge is empty, but perfectly
good if you select the black only option. One thing I'm not happy
about is that the printer flat out won't work without a color cartridge,
no matter that I'm only printing black. Had an empty color cartridge go
bad and the printer quit. Since then I've collected empties from friends
to keep around so that the printer will still run if it decides the
color cartridge must be replaced again.

 - prints in good quality, speed and noise is not that important
 - should work under FreeBSD / Linux, not just under Windows

About 14 months ago and 10,000 pages I bought a Brother HL-5250DN at
Staples for $250. That seems to still be the going price. Have no
regrets. Prints both sides, ethernet and USB interfaces, rated 30 ppm
and prints faster than any printer we have at work. Postscript-3 clone
and PCL-6.

Works perfectly from MacOS and FreeBSD, altho I almost never use it from
FreeBSD and can't really say I've given it a FreeBSD workout.

As an early adopter it took a while for aftermarket refills to hit the
market but the rated 7,000 page refill is under $20. Only difference I
have noticed is the smell, and its only different, not better, not
worse.

Am a little concerned about the cost of replacing the drum, rated for
25,000 pages. Going rates for Bother toner + Brother drum is almost the
same as a new HL-5250DN printer. With any luck the resurfaced drum
companies will be ramped up by the time I need one.

No point in running an envelope thru this printer, it wrinkles.

Shortly after making my purchase some were running a special including
an optional paper tray which would hold a full ream. The special bundled
all that at the same $250 I paid. Have not seen that extra tray offered
since.

As for the price, I'm thinking of 100 000 HUF (about 400 EUR) as
*very* maximum. The price is important, but the first point is more
important at all...I color laser printer would be cool if this amount
of money is sufficient for this, but a BW one is ok, too.

If you are concerned about refill prices then I would expect color would
be out of the question as operating costs are higher even when printing
BW.

I've found that the price per page doesn't vary that much between
printers. Some, but not that much. Its more a matter of how long
you can go between replacing the toner.

I've used by Xerox a lot under MacOSX, FreeBSD (using CUPS mostly)
and printed maybe 5 pages from Windows... It definitely works
with FreeBSD.

I have a Phaser 6300. Xerox includes the .PDD file to make CUPS
recognize all its features. Its priced a bit high for your requirements
but a Phaser 6180 might be something you are interested in.

My suggestion would be a used HP LaserJet 4050, preferably with a
JetDirect network interface. I've used them as network printers for
FreeBSD with excellent results, they're built well and cheap to run.
Have not tried toner refilling, though.

You could probably buy a color laser with mostly-empty starter toner
at this price, but replacing supplies could cost as much or more than
the printer.

I haven't found any printer that really works well with envelopes (unless

printing high volumes of flyers, envelopes and brochures).

I have an HP Photosmart 7360 that I like, largely because I don't use it

inactivity without clogging the nozzles.

2005-04-19 Thread Didier Wiroth
Hi,

I'm planning to buy a new graphic adapter, which should fulfill a few
conditions.

a) dual-dvi output
b) no fan (well yes, it needs to be silent)
c) fast 3d acceleration NOT required
d) tv-out not required
e) cheap ;-))
f) tending to a NVIDIA adapter because of their freebsd support

Is someone using such a card, if so, which one?

Many thx

this work in a linux type environment.

Only if they have a linux port. I would suggest keeping your life
simple instead of trying to shoe horn it in using wine or a modified
wine that comes with some linux distros. Go dual boot or make one
system for your unix of choice and another for windows.

I want compatability seamlisly, but also want off of WIndows.

Depends... as far as networking and the like that is entirely
possible. If you are counting on running unix apps on windows and vice
versa, you won't be able to well or effectively.

Any ways, have fun :)

Not sure which one to download

2004-01-04 Thread keithjacksonmusic
I was looking into the different platforms FreeBSD supports, and most of them are 64
bit processors. Does FreeBSD support AMD Durons clocked at 1.3 ghz? If so, which one
should i download? Thanks a bunch

The main version of FreeBSD is for i386 stuff.

Yes, the i386 version will work on it.

Welcome to FreeBSD.

As a complete beginner, we recommend that you start with the
production release: 4.9-RELEASE.

http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.9R/announce.html

Detailed documentation about installing the system chan be found here:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install.html

However you've said you want to cut yourself some installation CDs.
You need to download .iso images from one of the FTP sites:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html

The Mirror Sites database is very handy for locating this sort of
thing: http://mirrorlist.freebsd.org/FBSDsites.php

However essentially you will want to go here:

   ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.9/

or the equivalent directory on one of the mirrors.

There are 3 iso images available:

4.9-i386-mini.iso

This is the minimum set of stuff you need to get FreeBSD
installed. Note that this *doesn't* contain anything other than
the basic FreeBSD system. So, for instance, if you want X windows
(you probably do), you'll have to download it separately once
you've got the OS installed.

4.9-i386-disc1.iso

This contains the same stuff as the mini .iso above plus quite a
lot of extra useful stuff -- it's 3x the size of the mini-iso.
You need either this or the mini-iso.

4.9-i386-disc2.iso

This is a live-filesystem image which you can boot and run from.
It's principal use is for repairing systems where the normal boot
process has been broken. It's nice to have around, but you don't
have to have it for doing the installation.

The CHECKSUMS.MD5 file just contains this text:

MD5 (4.9-i386-disc1.iso) = 9195be15a4c8c54a6a6a23272ddacaae
MD5 (4.9-i386-disc2.iso) = 51d28c35308cc916b9a9bfcacb3146b8
MD5 (4.9-i386-mini.iso) = 2635f02aebce8e1c2b83d1acdbbcb2ea

which lets you verify that there were no errors in the image you
downloaded by comparing this checksum against a checksum you can
generate locally. Again, not necessary for installation, but useful
to do.

If you were to buy the 4-CD installation set from one of the vendors
(http://www.freebsdmall.com/ or http://www.bsdmall.com/), you'ld get
precisely these disc1 and disc2 versions as the first two CDs with
another 2-CDs worth of precompiled 3rd party software packages.

When you come to generate the installation CDs, beware that you don't
end up with a CD that contains just the one .iso file, rather than
expanding the .iso into a whole load of stuff: check the archives of
this list for details of exactly what you need to do with various CD
burning software -- http://freebsd.rambler.ru/ is a good site to use
for that.

Cheers,

Matthew

Hi, if you want to install freebsd from a cd, i suggest you to download
the .iso from this adress and than burn it on cds.

here's the link for the production release 4.9.
ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-i386/4.9/
This is the best version to get the best support and most port will already
be there.

You can order the original cds from this adress if you don't have a cd
burner.

As I know teTeX is a distribution of LaTeX and many packages.
The packages included in teTeX is quite complete, and you will
be able to do most of what you need to do without any extra

teTeX is the standard install for TeX, it includes pretty much everything
you need (metafont/LaTeX/pdflatex)--at any rate they're all on my system
and all I remember installing was teTeX.

If you mean cdrtools, it works on IDE burners with options ATAPICAM and
necessary SCSI devices in your kernel, using a recent -STABLE:

grip cd ripper - which one

2002-12-09 Thread John Bleichert
Hello All

I'm looking for a ripping utility to tell grip to use to pull tracks from
an audio cd - which one does everybody use? The default is cdda2wav which
isn't in the ports collection.

I see a few other rippers in the ports collection, but I like grip - which
ripping utility should I tell it to use?

Thanks - JB

Ports should *not* overwrite the base system.
To find out how a port installed itself, use the pkg_info(1) command.
In this case, I think you'll find ${PREFIX}/libexec/proftpd
is what you're looking for, assuming you haven't redefined your ports
prefix.
