 Use fc_assert* or not use it? Or did I miss something about the
 following comment?

You just missed the successive steps to get this patch ;). I let those
classical assertions at start, and then, I found another solution safer, not
allowing recursive calls on vdo_log().

state.
* Removed duplication of test PACKET_REPORT_REQ and PACKET_CLIENT_INFO.
* Moved the handle of packet PACKET_CONN_PONG.
* Remove reference to observer player which doesn't exist anymore since
2.0.
* pconn-observer is checked in the player test, because an observer is not
a valid player.
* pplayer-nturns_idle not reset to 0 when an observer send a packet.
* Removed not needed translation of an error message.

I hope there are not other oddities in that function I missed.

'-' is not a problem, I doubt '+' would be one. However, if it has been
changed, there is no reason to return to the old situation.

 On a related note, it seems to me to be overkill to append both
 the turn number and the year to the name. Perhaps we could just
 skip the year?

The string AD and BC are not hard-coded here, it just use the value of
the ruleset. So, this is not relevant for this ticket.

This bug can potentially cause the server to crash.  For example, consider
server/unittools.c : 744

if (what_pillaged == S_LAST  punit-activity_base != -1) {
  unit_pillage_base(ptile, base_by_number(punit-activity_base));
} else {
  tile_clear_special(ptile, what_pillaged);
}

Note that the field activity_base has type Base_type_id.  If it ends up with
the value 255 instead of -1 because of the bug, the if-clause will execute,
calling unit_pillage_base with NULL as the base.  The unit_pillage_base
function dereferences the NULL pointer.  Game over.

Is there any objection to the proposed fix?  It seems clear that if a type
uses signed values, it should be a signed type.

For S2_2: Could someone affirm that changing a type uint8 to sint8 is safe or
not in the network code? This field contains only small values [-1; 32[.

What is this branch? What is your line 906. For me there is really nothing
which could cause a crash there: only a comparison between normal integers.

 I'm also seeing pixel dust appearing when scrolling left -- it
 looks as though lines drawn to the extreme right of the screen
 bleed onto the left side by one pixel. I'm seeing this from city
 labels even with trade route drawing disabled, so this may be a
 new bug.

I think, this is quite linked, but I couldn't remove them. I think, it's
linked with the drawing code below the changes.

I have a vague recollection that '+' is troublesome in the DOS/FAT world.

to agree.

Follow-up Comment #1:

The main window has had a scrollbar added to it, presumably because there's
some widget that refuses to be shrunk further (the chat panel?) Perhaps we
could do something about that to avoid the main window scrollbar appearing.

For me the scrollbar appears around 854 pixels wide. Does it depend on the
length of strings and hence the translation?

Once you've got a scrolling window like this, you can end up not being able
to see the whole city report even though there is no scrollbar on the report,
because the report fits on the window canvas but not the scrolling viewport.
If so, you can scroll the whole window to see the report (but it's not
nice).

I can't produce a situation where I can't scroll to see all the columns of
the city report with one scrollbar or another. Is that what you're seeing?

Details:

Vadim Mikhnevych notes on -i18n that the English noun vote has two
meanings: a vote as a process or formalised choice (the council held a
vote), and a vote as an instance of voting (the mayor cast her vote).

The attached patch adds some TRANS: comments to disambiguate where which is
meant isn't clear from context. (In most cases it's the former.)

 For S2_2: Could someone affirm that changing a type uint8 to
 sint8 is safe or not in the network code? This field contains
 only small values [-1; 32[.

After a brunch of tests, I am now certain that changing this type won't break
the compatibility, as values over 127 are not used. So no need to perform a
capability string update in trunk, and use the trunk patch on S2_2 branch...
Ready for test!
