I mentioned these historic examples. The first describes a hydraulic analog computer. {The MONIAC (Monetary National Income Analogue Computer), also the Phillips Hydraulic Computer and the Financephalograph, was created in 1949 by the New Zealand economist Bill Phillips to model the national economic processes of the United Kingdom, while Phillips was a student at the London School of Economics (LSE). The MONIAC is an analogue computer which used fluidic logic to model the workings of an economy. The MONIAC name is suggested by associating money and ENIAC, an early electronic digital computer.} https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MONIAC This second subject, explains an algorithm's mistaken assumption. Its economic cost was USD 1.2 billion, or EUR 1.1 billion! {Put in place in July 2016 and announced to the public in December of the same year,[6][7] the scheme aimed to replace the formerly manual system of calculating overpayments and issuing debt notices to welfare recipients with an automated data-matching system that compared Centrelink records with averaged income data from the Australian Taxation Office.[5][6]} {The Australian government lost a 2019 lawsuit over the legality of the income averaging process, and settled a class action lawsuit in 2020. The scheme was further condemned by Federal Court Justice Bernard Murphy in his June 2021 ruling against the Government where he approved a A$1.8 billion settlement including repayments of debts paid, wiping of outstanding debts, and legal costs.[17]} {"That the Department of Human Services should resume full responsibility for calculating verifiable debts (including manual checking) relating to income support overpayments, which are based on actual fortnightly earnings and not an assumed average; and provide those issued debt notices with the debt calculation data required to be assured any debts are correct".} {In November 2019, the federal government agreed to orders by the Federal Court of Australia in Amato v the Commonwealth that the averaging process using ATO income data to calculate debts was unlawful, and announced that it would no longer raise debts without first gathering evidence – such as payslips – to prove a person had underreported their earnings to Centrelink.[1][2]} {On 31 May 2020, Attorney-General Christian Porter, who was Minister for Social Services when the Robodebt system was first implemented, and who had previously defended the scheme,[33] conceded that the use of averaged income data to calculate welfare overpayments was unlawful, stating that there was "no lawful basis for it".[9][47]} https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robodebt_scheme {The report concluded that the robodebt scheme was "devised without regard to the social security law", and that the use of income averaging in estimating entitlements "was essentially unfair, treating many people as though they had received income at a time when they had not".[20]} {In the aftermath of the final report, Kathryn Campbell, secretary of the Department of Human Services from 2011 to 2017, was suspended without pay from her position as a special adviser on the AUKUS nuclear submarine project, a position with a $900,000 salary.[27] Additionally, a PwC consultant who testified to the Royal Commission was fired in the hours after the final report was released.[28]} https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Commission_into_the_Robodebt_Scheme -- My old address "kilgal...@iinet.net.au", will die 2 October! Re: [Freedos-user] USB serial & DOSBox
Yes, Louis: Very cool! In my Ubuntu Home directory is the hidden directory ".dosbox". And within that, is the latest-version configuration file "dosbox-0.74-3.conf". At the end of that, I have edited a section thus. {[autoexec] # Lines in this section will be run at startup. # Belkin F5U409 Serial-USB interface. serial1=directserial realport:ttyUSB0 # You can put your MOUNT lines here. # Mount POLAR heart-monitor software directory. Change to it & run POLAR. mount c ~/snap/dosbox-jz/108/DOS/POLAR/ C: POLAR} So now launching DOSBox, changes to the heart-monitor software directory. Re: [Freedos-user] USB serial & DOSBox
Yay, Louis: It should be at `/dev/ttyUSB0` and you should refer to realport `ttyUSB0` or something like that (`serial1=directserial realport:ttyUSB0`). Yes, I found that character device. lsusb lists the following. {Bus 001 Device 005: ID 050d:0109 Belkin Components F5U109/F5U409 PDA Adapter} In DOSBox, at the C: prompt, I entered: "serial1=directserial realport:ttyUSB0". [Freedos-user] USB serial & DOSBox
My heart monitor is an old Polar Sport Tester 4000. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1393035/Polar-Electro-Sport-Testert.html Its interface box has an RS2323 socket. I had been downloading data to an old PC with a serial port. That PC runs FreeDOS. VER/R reports "DOS version 7.10". My Ubuntu PC does not have a serial port. But I have a Belkin F5U409 USB-serial adaptor. My Linux kernel is 5.19.0-50-generic. {The device is supported by kernel versions 2.6.0 and newer according to the LKDDb: Ver Source Config By ID By Class 2.6.0 - 6.3 drivers/usb/serial/mct_u232.c CONFIG_USB CONFIG_USB_SERIAL CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_MCT_U232 050d:0109 *} https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:050d-0109 That adaptor's LNK LED is on (green). The Ubuntu PC has DOSBox v0.74-3. It runs the POLAR software OK. That can set serial port to COM1 or COM2. DOSBox Wiki says this. {Configuration:SerialPort Jump to navigation Jump to search serialX = device [parameter:value] device can be: dummy | modem | nullmodem | directserial parameter is: irq value is: for directserial: realport (required), rxdelay (optional). for modem: listenport (optional). for nullmodem: server, rxdelay, txdelay, telnet, usedtr, transparent, port, inhsocket (all optional). Defaults: serial1=dummy serial2=dummy serial3=disabled serial4=disabled An example of how to configure an actual serial port for I/O use: serial1=directserial realport:com1} So in DOSBox, I enter that last line. Then I launch the POLAR software. And I check its default serial port: "THE SELECTED SERIAL PORT FOR HR INPUT IS: COM1". Then I instruct the heart monitor to transmit data. And the adapter's RX LED illuminates red. But the POLAR software fails to detect data! Re: [Freedos-user] Can't see USB stick
Thanks, Ralf: I much rather think that the confusion is that (Free)DOS is not plug, so if you plug in the USB stick after FreeDOS is booted up, it will very likely (though depending on the BIOS of the machine) not recognize that there is a different drive. Boot up with the USB stick inserted, and it is very likely to see it just fine. That's how it works on my old Dell laptop... I had tried that without success. Re: [Freedos-user] Can't see USB stick
Thanks, Travis: Dos doesn't handle fat32 devices by default. Via a card-reader, I plugged an old FAT16 CompactFlash memory card into my FreeDOS PC. FreeDOS recognised that as drive D:. Hi Thomas: OS/2 2.x and Warp could boot DOS from a floppy, but I don't think even they could run it from a disk partition. I used OS/2 Warp 4. Being delighted by the speech-recognition interface! I ran OS/2 from 1.3 to Warp 4 Fixpack 12 until it crashed and destroyed most hard drive data sometime during the single-digit days of April 2001. I struggled to keep it alive. Discovering that my installation disks got corrupted! I even remember my room temperature at that time was 83 F, which was, and still is, quite comfortable to me. My desk temperature is now 27 °C (81 °F). Re: [Freedos-user] tunein.com and freedos?
Hi Eric: I do have some experience with writing a simple adapter for Dutch text to speech long ago, so I am actually aware of the limitations of the technology. Even now, youtubers who prefer to stay anonymous use annoyingly artifically sounding speech engines. I think I even have a chip from back when it was important to offload speech output from the CPU to dedicated hardware somewhere in my collection: I made a couple of Arduino projects. One drove a SpeakJet speech synthesiser chip. I tried to make that American voice express Australian phrases. So I discovered some dialectical differences. American English is rhotic--whereas Australian English is non-rhotic. English orthography (spelling)--does not guide how a speaker pronounces a word. Take for example "I drove my car to the bar to play cards.". An Aussie says "I drove my kaa to the baa to play kaads". As in "Baa, baa, black sheep", without pronouncing any `r's. Australian English Also has the triphthong "oua". Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS make better compatibility with DOS games [current status]
Yes, Eric: Networking with Samba is a bit complicated to configure, but Bryan and Frantisek have recently done that for Bryan's computers, so they can probably share some tricks. We have indeed done this! So I don't need to transfer data via USB stick. I mainly use FreeDOS to receive heart monitor data. The receiver talks to a hardware serial port. Its software is DOS. I also wanted to print text files from that PC. Hence we started this project. We've run into a Samba bug. That truncates files received from DOS. So only the first hundred or so characters, print. This was a heterogeneous printing project. Thus it used Samba for networking. While CUPS was used for printing. Only the networking part works right from FreeDOS. This project lasted months. It required patience and goodwill. I gave needs, analysis, and trial and error testing. Frank advised, simulated, researched, and tested. My main computers run Ubuntu. Its GUI applications include a CUPS front end. I repeatedly installed Brother's printer driver. That installer, and the CUPS front end, offer many options. Those lack documentation. And half the installer options gave error messages! Configuration files were scattered across PCs. In the Linux file system, some were in /etc, /mnt, /run, and /var. On the FreeDOS PC, I installed MSNET. Suggested syntax sometimes didn't work in practice. So I repeatedly used command line tools. Such as editing configuration files. In the Ubuntu file system, I worked mainly in the /etc directory. Therein I was mainly in cups/ and samba/. There I was editing hosts, smb.conf, printers.conf, and *.ppd files. In FreeDOS, I repeatedly edited files. Those were LMHOSTS and LOGON.BAT. We found password and file name limitations in FreeDOS. An Ubuntu password--failed in FreeDOS. FreeDOS also fell over at Brother's default printer name! I recursively edited and tested configuration. That was on both Ubuntu and FreeDOS computers. For one printer, Ubuntu's CUPS GUI made multiple print queues! Configuration was transient. Then applications did or didn't print. Their listed print queues, mostly had various errors! We disabled a daemon. This limited the many print queues listed by Files/Nautilus. Samba runs from two servers. They are my Ubuntu PC, and the router's USB stick. My Ubuntu computers can use both. But the FreeDOS PC only sees the PC server. We cooperated well. So I learned kludgy command-line tools. Re: [Freedos-user] Print
Thanks, Ralf: If you have mapped LPT2 to the network printer then you *must* print to LPT2. Sending to PRN or LPT1 won't do anything because there's no device there. I will henceforth direct printing to PRN. On the FreeDOS PC, in C:\MSNET>, I have edited LOGON.BAT. That now says the following. "net use PRN: \\%SERVER%\%PRINTQUEUE% %PASSWORD%" The easy way to print to any port is just to copy or echo a file to that port. I have entered this: * "copy readme.txt prn". 3.4 lines print. That doesn't make any sense. There must be something else in play for that to work. PRN: is an alias to LPT1: I wanted to simplify usage, hence the above. There should be no printout what so ever of you would send data to PRN: and have the network printer assigned to LPT2: As above in the mean time I have assigned printing to PRN (no longer to LPT2). -- members.iinet.net.au/~kilgallin/ ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] Print
Thanks for your interest, Liam: From the FreeDOS PC, I can print a little over a hundred characters. So does that meant that it _can_ print something? Yes. I have just got that function operating again. PRN: -- the default printer Hm, I'd like all printing to go to the Samba-network printer! So I have edited "C:\MSNET\LOGON.BAT". That is to direct PRN: to the network print queue. Then on the FreeDOS PC, I entered "print readme.txt". Next, "Printing" and "Completed" messages on my Ubuntu PC, coincided with output from the printer. The printed output was 3.4 lines. COM1: (and 2--4) -- the serial ports I have my heart-monitor's receiver-box plugged into the FreeDOS PC's serial port. That is my main reason for using FreeDOS! If you have mapped LPT2 to the network printer then you *must* print to LPT2. Sending to PRN or LPT1 won't do anything because there's no device there. I will henceforth direct printing to PRN. The easy way to print to any port is just to copy or echo a file to that port. I have entered this: * "copy readme.txt prn". 3.4 lines print. You *do not need* the PRINT command. The print command is for *background* printing, so that a user of a non-multitasking OS can get on with doing something else while the printer works. This is called printer spooling. A test that I haven't done is timing printing via different commands. "Copy" (as above) takes one minute. Whereas "print readme.txt", takes one minute 6 seconds. We need complete and accurate information to try to troubleshoot this, and you are not providing it... I do not perceive your specification of further information required! copy readme.txt lpt2: {README.TXT => LPT2} I notice a seemingly long time elapsed after entering the command on the FreeDOS PC. So I reboot the printer. I do not know what the material in {curly brackets} means so I do not know how to interpret your reply. On the FreeDOS PC, I entered "copy readme.txt lpt2:". That action resulted in this PC replying to me "README.TXT => LPT2". Is the printer a laser printer? Yes, it is a GDI dumb printer. If so, then when printing, it will store up text until it has a full page _then_ print it. The README.TXT document is several pages long! A laser printer is physically only able to print a whole page at a time. It can't print a few lines at a time like a dot-matrix or inkjet. So if you only send a few lines, you need to send a form feed after it to tell the printer "that's all, now print it." I have sent a document comprising several pages of text. But only the first hundred or so characters get printed! So you'd do: echo myfile.txt > lpt2: ... then... echo ^L > lpt2: On the FreeDOS PC, I entered this: "PRINT README.TXT & PRINT ^^L". One minute 17 seconds later, was printed the first 3.4 lines of the "README.TXT" document. -- members.iinet.net.au/~kilgallin/ ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] Print
Thanks, Liam: On the FreeDOS PC: * LMHOSTS lists the printer against its IP address; and * LOGON.BAT lists the server and print queue, and specifies "net use LPT2:, with the server, print queue, and password. That looks good! Great progress from when you first asked. From the FreeDOS PC, I can print a little over a hundred characters. But I cannot get PRINT to work! OK, question 1: why do you need the PRINT command? Because I want to print, and it's called "PRINT"! It's a background spooler. It is not in any way needed for DOS printing. It does seem to partially work as above. That is, of a text document, the first 3.4 lines appear from the printer. {PRINT README.TXT} Did you not specify to print to LPT2:? I have been experimenting. Whether I do or don't, the result's the same! Next I read "Device to direct Print [PRN=0]". So it's not going to LPT2: – it's going to PRN: Then I used this option. It only worked after the file name. If before it, I got a "not found" error! "/d:device" https://www.computerhope.com/printhlp.htm [1] You don't need PRINT. To test if printing works, just do copy readme.txt lpt2: {README.TXT => LPT2} I notice a seemingly long time elapsed after entering the command on the FreeDOS PC. So I reboot the printer. [2] If you *do* want background printing, you need to tell PRINT where to send the data: PRINT /D:LPT2: readme.txt {print README.TXT /D:LPT2:} {Background... Version... FILE ADDED TO QUEUE. PRINT QUEUE SUBSYSTEM IS INSTALLED Device to direct Print [PRN= ]:} But nothing seems to be printing. Perhaps I should be rebooting computers? Thanks, Frank: ...while looking for some existing "LPT port redirection software" for DOS, I've first found this proggie: I have tried using that. But I found its documentation limited! And I have not been able to get printing done thereby. It's a little TSR in .COM format that installs in memory, captures any printing on LPT1 (done using the BIOS printing service at INT 17h) into a chunk of XMS memory and upon another invocation, can dump the captured data into a file. So it does not write the file in the background... I thought that the documentation claimed it rewrote the file that I was trying to print! Re: [Freedos-user] Catching up on FreeDOS articles at OpenSource.com
Thanks, Jim: Q: What are the advantages of using FreeDOS over alternative ways of running DOS applications (e.g., DOSBox)? A: Using DOSBox to run DOS applications in Linux is a great way to run certain DOS applications. But DOSBox is really intended to launch a single DOS program, like a game. The DOS command line is pretty limited in DOSBox. In contrast, FreeDOS provides a full DOS command line. My Polar Sport Tester PE4000 software just wouldn't work properly under emulation. I couldn't get a USB serial link to go! So I was unable to upload heart rate data to a more modern PC. But I have a working 32 bit PC with a built-in hardware serial port! And that works fine with the Polar DOS software. Q: Why work on DOS in 2021? A: [I talk about a few things, but mostly about how programming in DOS is not the same as programming on Linux. You can't just "load everything into memory" because you don't have a lot of memory to use, ... and that makes programming more challenging and interesting.] I thought that I would keep my brain alive! Q: How big is the FreeDOS community? A: FreeDOS was a very popular project throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s, but the community isn’t as big these days. But it’s great that we are still an engaged and active group. I have especially appreciated detailed help from Europe! [I also mention the virtual get-togethers.] Q: How does someone get involved in the community? A: I think our community is very welcoming, so anyone is free to join. Re: [Freedos-user] Printing over the network
Thanks, Frank: I'd hazard a guess that the Ubuntu PC has some listening sockets open for access via IPP, LPR and with some minimal effort we could have Samba. IPP is no use from DOS, so we have LPR or Samba left. I used lpoptions to set my Brother printer as the default. Re: [Freedos-user] Print via USB
Thanks again, Frank: Basically I'd say you're all set to try and load the DOS network stack, and see if that works I take it that means entering "start", in either MSNET OR PKTDRV. :-) Again there are two alternative flavours of the DOS TCP/IP stack, one tastes of Microsoft, the other one of "independent open-source stuff" (the CRYNWR packet driver API). This is what you should try next - either A) or B), reboot inbetween A) and B) when you want to switch to the other: A.) the one Microsoft way: cd msnet start ping 10.1.1.1 ping 10.1.1.2 ping 10.1.1.92 B.) the CRYNWR packet driver: cd pktdrv start ping 10.1.1.1 ping 10.1.1.2 ping 10.1.1.92 I suggest that you also try mem /c /p after A) and B) in turns for comparison. Look at the "largest executable program size" at the end of the listing In MSNET, that's "510K (522,512 bytes)". In PKTDRV, it's ""628K (643,024 bytes). If you get bored before I end up sending further "printing" instructions to you, try tcpdump or Wireshark on the Linux box OK, in a terminal window, I entered "sudo tcpdump -A". I see reports of the router. These entries mention: * HOST; * CACHE-CONTROL; * LOCATION; * SERVER; * NT; * USN; * NTS; * OPT; * 01-NLS; * BOOTID.UPNP.ORG; and * CONFIGID.UPNP.ORG. Ubuntu Software installed the Qt version of the Wireshark sniffer. In a terminal window, I launched it via sudo. But I didn't understand the reportage. I need to read the documentation! Maybe one small thing to test on your Ubuntu box: if you open a terminal window, and type which lpr what do you get? /usr/bin/lpr If you get something like /usr/bin/lpr, could you also try this? which lpq /usr/bin/lpq lpq -a no entries lpr is a command-line program that allows you to copy/send a file to a print queue, locally within your Linux box. The file = print job is expected at standard input. lpq is a print queue "manager" command, for your overview of the jobs being printed, and the queues present in the system. Dear Eric: feel free to notify the bootablecd.de maintainer that you would prefer less contrast for the Blinky mascot background to distract visitors less from reading the text on the page. Yes, I've sent an e-mail request there. Indeed ! marks a line as "always use" while ? marks it as "ask user". Note that there are a few bugs in the config, which I have listed in a mail about 1.3rc3 or rc4 recently. 1?DEVICE=C:\FDOS\BIN\JEMMEX.EXE NOEMS X=TEST I=TEST NOVME NOINVLPG 2?DEVICE=C:\FDOS\BIN\JEMM386.EXE X=TEST I=TEST I=B000-B7FF NOVME NOINVLPG device=DOS\JEMMEX.EXE X=TEST NOEMS You could edit the "1..." line above by removing I=TEST NOVME NOINVLPG to make it match the FD_NET example, while still being menu-driven: It will still only be loaded when you select menu option 1 at boot. Other differences worth copying are: break=off buffers=30 stacks=0,0 You can add those lines to your config, at any place, but for readability, I recommend "nearby the old settings for those". Of course, you remove the "!buffers=20" in the old config. SHELLHIGH=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:4096 /P That actually makes a big difference to your old 12?SHELLHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\COMMAND.COM C:\FDOS\BIN /E:1024 /P=C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT The old line expects command.com to be in c:\fdos\bin\ while the FD_NET line has it in c:\ so only change the old line if you want to use the command.com in the new location. Also note the different /E: values: They define how much space you want for environment variables and you may have to go from 1024 to 4096 if the network config needs that much space. Re: [Freedos-user] Print via USB
Thanks, Ralf: Without any additional software, a printer being used from DOS needs to be able to receive plain text, with additional capabilities either through the industry standard ESC/P (developed by Epson, who was for a long time the leader in printers before laser printers started to show up, then they kind of missed the bus) or by being "LaserJet II" (PCL3) compatible. That rules out my Brother HL-3150CDN colour laser printer. An additional hurdle is that a lot of (El Cheapo) printers these days aren't actually processing "text/graphics into pixel" themselves anymore, but just expect to get all the final pixel data from the OS, which is not a problem for GUI OS like Windows or macOS, but pretty much is a no-go when printing from DOS. Full stop. Yes, my printer is GDI only! DOS as designed only supports good old parallel (as in Centronics) or RS-232 type serial connections. Both of those are rare as hen's teeth on both newer computers and/or printers. I do have both parallel and serial ports on my Dell OptiPlex GX270 running FreeDOS. I currently use the serial port for my POLAR Sport Tester PE4000 heart-monitor receiver-box. https://www.suchebiete.com/foto_Polar-Sport-Tester-PE4000-Pulsuhr_Interface,15849589.html Another possibility is printing on a networked printer, if that printer is accessible through an established network connection. Used to be a breeze back in the days on a Novell network, is a bit harder these days when you require SMB (and likely the nowadays frowned upon SMB 1.x protocol). But the whole networking on DOS these days is lik going down a really dark rabbit hole. :( That leaves us once again with the dreaded (from the viewpoint of operability in DOS) USB connected printers. Finding USB drivers, given that the printer is software compatible with DOS as mentioned above, will likely be an exercise in futility. :( -- members.iinet.net.au/~kilgallin/ ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] Print via USB / deprecate or improve PRINT queue tools?
Thanks, Adam: It's worse than that. I've tried to get many different printers working under Linux (which generally has pretty good hardware support) and it turns out that a lot of manufacturers cut corners on their devices and don't support standard print protocols like PostScript or PCL, and instead use a lightweight translation layer to pass the drawing calls in the Windows API over to the hardware. I've read that my Brother HL-3150CDN laser printer only does GDI! It basically means there are a number of (usually cheap) printers out there that will only work under Windows. Ubuntu Linux prints to it OK. But apparently not my old PC running FreeDOS! If you can find a modern printer that supports both PostScript and PCL, there's a fair chance that you can still get a parallel port interface adapter for it too so you won't need the USB drivers anyway. So what is a purchasable printer suitable for printing from FreeDOS on bare-metal? They're usually aimed at industrial/point-of-sale type users where the modern equipment still all uses the traditional interfaces. I suppose something like this could list text. {This is a thermal printer like you would find on a cash register or adding machine. It will print simple strings passed to it via TTL serial, bitmap images (poorly) and it can generate several different formats of barcodes. This model can even print QR Codes! You may have to remove some paper from these rolls in order for it to fit into the printer. But, you can always use the excess paper in the printer, since you don’t need to have a ‘core’ in the paper for it to work. Re: [Freedos-user] Print via USB
Thanks, Frank: Epson dot matrix printers (ESC*P language) were perfectly willing to print individual characters, a line at a time I guess. They were (are) line printers and the ESC*P "language" is little more than an "extension" of raw ASCII + control characters (CR, LF, FF etc) by "escape sequences on top" - for switching fonts and maybe more complex tasks. Back in the day, I wrote in PROLOG, a custom word-processor outputting from my DOS palmtop to a dot-matrix printer. Laser printer formats are page-oriented, and are not "evolved from plain ASCII" in the way that sending a paragraph of raw ASCII text would yield visible output on paper, even if a "formfeed" provokes the printer to load paper and print a page (not sure if this even works). Even in PCL, you need to provide some commands to the printer, to place some text on the page and get it "rendered on paper". Let alone PostScript - quite a tightly specified "well formed" format. Obviously you can embed bitmaps in PCL and PostScript print jobs. Esc*P can do it too. When printing from modern software, every page can be just a huge embedded bitmap. And, there are printers that can *only* print bitmaps, albeit in a thin wrap of some standardized format: think PCLm (in spite of its name, it is a gutted / stripped down version of PDF).
