This must be frustrating Along with a ZAP of the PRAM, I suggest a low level reset. Forgive me if you already know this, but here is the sequence: 1. ZAP the PRAM as already directed in a previous post. 2. On the 3rd chime, quickly switch your fingers to hold down Command+Option + O + F.

Have you tried the regular fixes, such as reset Pram, reset PMU, ETC? It almost sounds like just a software issue, or possibly the hard drive. If you have the original install disks, there should be an Apple Hardware Test, if you have that you might try running it and see what it comes up w

You might try an Archive and Install, I had this happen on my G4 iBook, but that was due to a bad DVD drive, that didn't install all the system files... Sounds like a similar problem. (System files corrupted) (Archive and install keeps all your files safe.) To get your files off, you could u

You may need to change the jumper setting and/or cable position on your boot drive. The easiest way to see if this is the problem is to put the old dead drive back in place, just as it was before. Your Mac should boot normally and you will be able to use Disk Utility to check the disk and permissi
