Aside from the aftermarket CPUs, you can also use a CPU from a B&W G3. If
so I’d suggest avoiding anything below 350mhz as you won’t see that much of
an improvement. Your 266 uses a 512k cache, in the B&W the 350mhz and
faster used a 1mb cache. That by itself made a noticeable difference.

How about a Sonnet SATA card? It'll boot OS 9. If you really want an
external you can add an eSATA adapter. You can easily get an external case
with eSATA and USB or FW so you could easily move data to another machine.
New SATA drives ate cheap enough, they're almost giving away small used
ones
For me this could prove awkward as My Airport Extreme doesn't connect to
the internet and I don't seem to see a stand alone installer. Looks like a

All the Lacie D2 DVD drives I've seen used a regular ide optical drive.
Since almost any ide optical drive works in the G4, why not just pull it
out of the case and install it in the G4 in place of the stock one?

If it is a failing or marginal power supply you could try removing other
cards and running the hard drives off an external power supply. Then if it
does reboot when hot, you'll know it's your power supply. If it still
doesn't then maybe there's something wrong with the video card.

I clocked a 78mb SCSI drive vs an 80gb ide on an ACARD adapter to see

This just turns of the automatic backup. If you keep Time Machine in

Got to be something drawing a particular group with Macs more than 6
years old. I know several hundred Mac users and of those that are
online, about 1% are doing it with a PPC.
They'd be running newer hardware if they could afford to. Actually
their budget isn't much over free.

difference from a user standpoint other than temperatures decrease. I
believe it throttles down the processors and possibly shuts one down

I have a lot of Apple IIs, IIIs and Macs and I really need to

If the backup is made by cloning your hard drive then it should be
bootable. Firewire is preferable to USB 2.0 as USB 2.0 is pretty slow
to boot from but in a pinch it works. If your backup was done with
Time Machine then it's not bootable.
