Re: alg5 accidentently deleted a folder and emptied trash

2016-03-08 Thread Lawrence David Eden
I agree with others who have suggested keeping backups of your computer. IMHO,
the external drive that runs TimeMachine should be ON 24/7. I have 2 external
drives: 1 runs TimeMachine and the other runs SuperDuper!. SuperDuper! is
like CarbonCopy Cloner in that it runs on a schedule that you determine and you
can use the external HD to boot your Mac. Very valuable.

Re: Camino won't start anymore

2013-08-14 Thread Lawrence David Eden

zap the PRAM. COMMAND OPTION P R until you hear several restart chimes
Then restart holding COMMAND OPTION O T (the letters)

at the prompt type: reset-nvram (RETURN)
set-defaults (RETURN)
reset-all(Return)

Your Mac will restart and, hopefully, Camino will be reset as well.

Larry

Hi,

Lately my main browser is TenFourFox but
sometimes the QuickTime Enabler won't recognize a
YouTube video. So I quit TFF and want to start
good ole Camino but the app tells me it's already
running!

It isn't. Restarting the Finder or rebooting my MDD doesn't help.

Has anybody had the same experience? Is there a
workaround? TIA for your comments.

Best regards, Jörg.

Re: Web sites suddenly blocked

2013-04-29 Thread Lawrence David Eden
A great solution is to find the fastest DNS serves in your area.
Download a free copy of Namebench. It will find your best
alternative.

Larry

It sounds like a DNS hijack.

Change you dns provider with the instructions here:

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

If you don't like google DNS servers, use the one provided by your ISP.

Subject: Web sites suddenly blocked

I came home from a trip, turned on my computer, and found that I am
now blocked from certain favorite web sites. I am taken to a page at
http://www.blocked-website.com/www.blocked-website.com which
tells me, for example, Sorry, but (site) is blocked on this network.
This site was categorized in (category). Contact your network
administrator. Underneath this message it says Powered by OpenDNS.

OpenDNS appears to be legitimate, offering parental controls, but
there are no children in this household, and I do not use their
services. There are only two computers in the house, my Mac and my
wife's PC, both connected to the Internet via a router. Neither have
parental controls activated.

I contacted my provider, Verizon, and they maintain that nothing has
changed with them and that the problem is in my computer.

Computer is a dual 1.25 GHz MDD PowerPC G4 running OSX 10.5.8.
Browser is Safari 5.0.6.

What goes on here?

Re: DT Beige G3 to Sonnet G4 upgrade

2013-03-15 Thread Lawrence David Eden
I have experience.several years ago. IIRC, during the
installation process some of my RAM became unseated, and I had your
exact issues. Go back inside the Beige and make press the RAM cards
in again.

Hope this helps you.

Larry

Has anyone here had any experience with installing a Sonnet G4 CPU
500Mhz upgrade? I have installed the Sonnet software on my current
OS 9.2 and then powered down and installed a Sonnet G4 CPU in my DT
Beige G3. On power up the monitor and disks come on, but no chime.

The manual says nothing about having to pull installed PCI cards or
the CUDA, PRAM battery or any of that, but I am wondering if some
additional procedures might be necessary to make the G4 come to life
on the mobo.

Re: Problem with ColorSync Profiles?

2013-03-06 Thread Lawrence David Eden
Try zapping the PRAM. I had this issue when I changed monitors on my
old Smurf and it took care of the problem.

Larry

Hi All,

I powered-up my G5 today and it was all a shade of blue. My first
experience of ColourSync. I ran the first aid thing and got this:

/Library/Application
Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/Recommended/CoatedFOGRA27.icc
Tag 'desc': Tag size is not correct.

So...I found this http://forums.adobe.com/thread/371295 and removed
the description from the Coated FOGRA27 profile.

Since then the repair utility tells me all the profiles are good but
everything is still very blue. It's better than it was (i think!) but
seems like there's a real lack of the colour red in particular.

Is there a way to re-install all of the profiles?

I don't have the system disks as a bought a preloaded HDD from eBay.
It came with an older Photoshop version and Elements and this may
have caused the problem.

Thanks,
Evan

Re: G5 2.7 RAM upgrade.??

2013-02-13 Thread Lawrence David Eden
I had a similar experience with my wife's iMac G5 (2005). I bought
bargain RAM online and the G5 did not recognize it. When I replaced
the RAM with RAM sticks that I bought from OWC, I had no problems.
If I learned anything from this it is that the brand of RAM is
important. I was able to return the bargain RAM for a full refund,
so the only loss was the loss of time and perspiration.

Re: can *anyone* advise on Flash PPC problem??

2013-02-09 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Use HTML5 instead of Flash. Look here:

http://www.youtube.com/html5

1.8 DP G5/Leopard PPC. Flash stopped working on OmniWeb when I
installed Leopard Webkit, which I've now uninstalled. Does anyone know
why this happens? I even reinstalled OmniWeb, no Flash. I even copied
my known good fake version of Flash 11.5 and placed it inside OmniWeb.
That version the OmniWeb prefs read as invalid, and the version in
Library it reads as registered---but not loaded. In any case, no
dice, no Flash on Youtube.

Why Why Why? Can anyone imagine a fix?

Re: Redirect iTunes?

2012-11-28 Thread Lawrence David Eden
You need to direct iTunes to Import Library.
During this process, you tell iTunes where to
find your music and moviesin this case: the
path will be your back-up drive.

Larry

Hi,

A big HD with all my music and loads of movies
died recently and when I want to play a selection
of tracks in iTunes now I have to show the app
where to find it. iTunes asks to be shown the
path to every single track.

I'm happy that I made a copy of my music recently
with the exact same directory (hierarchy or
folders) but I cannot find any function in iTunes
where I can tell the app to look for the rest of
the music it used to play and thus rebuild its
catalogue.

Do I really have to redirect iTunes to every
single track?? This is a real PITA. Running
iTunes version 7.7 and the last version of Tiger
on a dual MDD. TIA in advance for your comments.

Best regards, Jörg.

  Try this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2016390/FPforFBPPC.zip

It's a hacked Flashplayer plugin pretending to be a newer version.
It worked on my G5 iMac, G4 Powerbook and many others. It doesn't
work with every site that requires a newer version of Flash but it
  does with most.

What is the source (site) for this? I believe I have seen it before ...

It's been around. It's a Flash 10.1 with a hacked version number, which
does seem sufficient for many sites, but it still suffers from the bugs and
security issues of that version.

Flash needs to die.

The only downside for this model is the lack of

Any usb keyboard should work, although PC

this, like DoubleCommand:

You may be able to swap those keys in the

only happened in Snow Leopard, so it doesn't

Audio

2012-02-11 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Greetings Listers,

G4 Yikes! running Tiger (10.4.11)

Somehow a mini plug, that I was using to run my external speakers,
broke off inside the Yikes' headphone jack. Trying to retrieve the
broken portion of the jack has proven difficult.

I have some old Mac parts laying around and thought that maybe I
could remove the blocked headphone jack and replace it with a
different one.

My other great idea is to use my drill and go through the metal
casing of the jack and see if I can get a better view of the broken
piece and remove it.

I am sure that I can count on all of you to help me put out the fire

Any other suggestions?

Re: going to an Intel iMac

2012-01-14 Thread Lawrence David Eden

I just tried using Migration Assistant:

I am trying to get my Intel iMac to look like my DA G4.

I used my external FW drive that has a recent CCC of my DA's HD.
I allowed Migration Assistant to create a New User Account instead of
updating an existing account.

Now I have a few questions:

I did not migrate my USER folder. Is this what was meant by
allowing Migration Assistant to create a new user?

How do I move my iTunes library over to the Intel iMac if I did not
copy my user account?

Did my passwords and authorizations import with the Migration Assistant?

I am really enjoying the learning experience...and am thankful that I
don't rely on the iMac. It kind of eliminates the pressure :-)

going to an Intel iMac

2012-01-07 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Dear Listers,

I am currently using a Dual Processor DA G4. This Mac runs Tiger (10.4.11)

I recently acquired an early model Intel iMac that has Snow Leopard installed.

My question is: Can I use CarbonCopyCloner to transfer the contents
of my G4 over to the Intel? I realize that there are different
operating systems on each Mac, and that the Intel would inherit the
G4's Tiger, but I have the Snow Leopard DVDs and plan on a reinstall
of Snow Leopard to the Intel iMac after the clone is complete.

Will this work?

Macs don't get infected easily, so I am not sure if I need to take

Log into the router's GUI interface using IP address 192.168.1.1 and then
list the log, check it out, and, finally, issue the REBOOT command.

This can be done from any computer on the Intranet side of the router,

Re: New Member to this list

2011-11-01 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Welcome. Before I switched to Mac, I was an Amiga Man too.

Larry

Hello one and all of the G-Group.

I currently have too many G3, G4 and G5 Mac computers, but I am trying
to sell some of them. My interest in them is in using both MacOS
(versions 9 and 10) and MorphOS on these fine old systems. For those
that don't know what MorphOS is, it is a re-write of AmigaOS3.1 for
PPC hardware and it started out 11 years ago on Phase5 PPC accelerator
boards for the Amiga A1200, A3000 A4000 computers.

It is a very lightweight operating system, dubbed the Lightning OS.
Although I like MacOS9 and MacOSX and use 10.5.8 for most of my
computing needs, I support the growth and expansion of MorphOS and
hope to be able to use it as my primary operating system very soon.
MorphOS3.0 is about to be released and will include support for the
last few G4 PowerBooks produced by Apple (models 1106, 1107, 1138, and
1139). MorphOS2.7 is the currently released version and it supports
all G4 Mac Mini's, the 1.25GHz 1.42GHz G4 eMac's, almost all G4
PowerMacs, as long as you install an ATI Radeon video card in them.

For Mac owners that no longer enjoy using MacOS9, or MacOSX on their
slower G4 Mac hardware, you might want to give MorphOS a try, as it is
a free download for the 30 minute time limited demo version. After
the 30 minutes expire the system slows to a crawl until you restart
your computer and then you have another 30 minutes of unrestricted
speed for free. If you like it you can purchase a license keyfile
that will remove the time limitation and all updates are free for
registered users.

Proof of concept demonstrations of MorphOS have also been shown on a
dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac and a 2.1GHz G5 iMac, though the developers
have stated that they are concentrating on work to perfect MorphOS for
the currently supported G4 Mac hardware before they spend any time
working on porting MorphOS to the G5 models. Release of MorphOS3.0
with support for the 1.67GHz G4 PowerBooks will be a huge step forward
for all Amiga Like operating systems. MorphOS is capable of running
most AmigaOS3.1 friendly software natively by using a 680x0 to PPC
Just-in-Time compiler/interpreter. There are also many new MorphOS
native applications and games, or ports of applications and games from
other platforms.

I am bound to have many questions for the Mac users on this list, as
my experience with MacOSX is limited to only the last 5 years or so.
For example, I need to clone the hard drive in my dual 1.25GHz G4
PowerMac which has an Avid Meridian video editing system installed in
it. I bought 7 of these systems from a studio that was upgrading
their studio, with the break-out boxes for audio and video input/
output and USB dongles, but one of the systems had a damaged hard
drive and I am trying to restore use of the Avid Meridian editing
hardware and software by cloning the hard drive from one computer to
another. Since I have the USB dongles for all of the systems and both
the PCI cards inside the computer and the break-out boxes for input/
output, plus the USB dongles are required to use the software, I don't
see why the software on the hard drive would be protected from
copying, but it apparently is, as I have been unsuccessful in my
attempts to copy the Avid software from one hard drive to another.
Any help would be appreciated. I can also use Ubuntu PPC 10.10 to
clone the drive, if there are any tools for Linux that would be easier
to use than trying to do it with MacOSX. The Avid Meridian software
only runs on MacOS9.2.2, if that makes any difference to any of you
trying to help me. Thanks and I hope to get to know more of you on
this list in the future.

Regards,
AmigaDave

Re: USB Drive Issues

2011-10-25 Thread Lawrence David Eden
It is not uncommon for ports on a powered hub to go bad. Did you
connect the drive to a different port on the hub?

Larry

All of a sudden my Verbatim USB drive (AC320GB) will not work when
connected to my Targus USB hub. The hub is powered, and the power
supply seems to be working. All other USB peripherals work fine when
plugged into the hub, and the Verbatim drive works fine when plugged
directly into a USB port on the computer. Could this be an indication
that the drive is failing? Disk utility reports all is okay with it.

Computer is a dual-processor MDD running 10.4.11.

TenFourFox

2011-10-01 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Listers,

I recently installed the upgrade of TenFourFox (7.0) on my Mac G4
running Tiger (10.4.11).
TenFourFox is telling me that I need to install the Flash Player
Plugin and here is where the trouble begins. I am unable to find the
PlugIn on the Internet. The only versions that I can find are for
Intel Macs.

Interestingly, I also use Camino and it handles Flash just fine so I
know that the plugin is somewhere in my System. Safari can also
display Flash material.

Can I copy the plugin that Camino uses and make TenFourFox see it as well?
I need step by step instructions.

Thanks,

Larry

I used t use XPF on my old Beige G3 and it was challenging, but fun

When I failed to pay attention to the limit XPF would not install
anything until the limit was set properly. Jeremiah should give XPF
a try and not worry about corrupting his HD.

No! Bruce was right, the Beige has the 1st 8GB restriction, you may
corrupt the HD if you do this!@!

In order to make this work, you'd either need to add a partition
within the 1st 8GB or boot the HD from an external Firewire
enclosure (only the Beige internal ATA bus has this crazy 1st 8GB
restriction).

There are ways to non-destructively add a partition, but these
generally require at least Leopard or Snow Leopard to
non-destructively add a partition using Disk Utility. There are
other programs such as iPartition that can add a partition to a
active HD.

Re: Quicksilver HD backup problem

2011-01-12 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Have you tested the FW drive?

Larry Eden

Hi. I have a Quicksilver 2002 G4 with an OWC 1.8 Ghz CPU upgrade. The
hard drive is a Seagate Barracude IDE 80 gig drive. It's a few years
old, but has gotten only moderate use.

The computer is working perfectly, but I'm unable to back up the hard
drive contents by any of several different methods.

I've tried cloning the HD contents to my external FireWire drive,
using both Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper. In each case, the clone
operation starts but then stalls within a matter of minutes.

With CC Cloner, it states at the very beginning of the cloning
operation that There may be a physical problem with the disk. When I
check the option to continue, it runs for maybe 5-10 minutes, copying
maybe 2 gb or so, then freezes.

With Super Duper, it starts normally, runs 5-10 minutes, then states
that some particular file can't be read or written and freezes.

With either program, I can't opt to stop the cloning operation, you
can't force-quit the program, and I'm forced into a hard restart using
the power button.

I tried running Disk Warrior, which detected very little out of the
ordinary, and Disk Utility, which found very little was amiss with the
disk permissions. Neither made any difference, and the cloning
attempts still failed.

I then tried something short of a full cloning operation, erasing the
partition of the external FW drive and then trying to spot-paste the
System folder onto it. This promptly choked as well.

The one operation that succeeded was that I was able to burn a half-
gig or so of files onto a DVD, using the internal burner, without
incident.

The hard drive isn't making any untoward noises, and the computer is
operating perfectly normally. But having irreplaceable old Classic
apps, family photos and business data at risk makes me really, really
nervous.

Probably the best suggestion I've heard so far is to use my MacBook
Pro to copy this computer's HD contents by putting the G4 in target
disk mode (though I'll have to buy a FW 400 to FW 800 cable to try
it), on the theory that it will allow the MacBook Pro to do the heavy
lifting. As for me, I know nothing.

Could the problem be something other than the hard drive?

Thoughts? Theories? Suggestions?

adding printers to a G5 iMac

2010-12-24 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Dear Listers,

My wife's iMac G5 is currently connected to a Lexmark laser printer
that works fine. She wants me to connect a color printer to the
iMac The problem is, I can't ADD any other printers to this
computer.

I have been talked through the process of adding printers (OS
10.4.11) by a tech person at Canon, but we were not successful. The
printer I am trying to add is a Canon Pixma MX300.

The iMac sees the new printer and it is listed as being connected to
the Mac via direct USB in System Profiler, but the iMac can't find
the driver that the Canon tech and I installed and re-installed.

The printer works fine when connected with the same cable to another Mac.

I suspect that the problem is caused by some sort of conflict in the
G5, but I don't know how to fix it. Can any of you suggest a cure?

I have run Disk Warrior, Disk Tools, repaired permissions, zapped
PRAM, reset NVRAM and defaults and tried using a different USB port
and cable. No problems were discovered

Happy Holidays to all and thanks for your ideas and input.

installing a printer on an iMac G5

2010-04-23 Thread Lawrence David Eden

I have been trying to install an inkjet printer on my wife's iMac G5.
I have tried installing 3 different printers (Lexmark X75, HP8050
Canon MX300). All installations end up the same way: the iMac can't
find a driver to use with the newly installed printer even after I
have downloaded the latest drivers from the manufacturer's websites,
and followed all onscreen prompts

I am able to install the same printers on an older iMac G3 running
Tiger (10.4.11)

The iMac G5 is running Tiger (10.4.11.)

Have any of you on the List had a similar experience? What did you
do to resolve the issue?

Thanks,

Larry

older printer and a G5 iMac

2010-04-20 Thread Lawrence David Eden
A friend recently gave me a Lexmark X75. I downloaded the Lexmark
drivers from their website, but it seems that the X75 is unsupported.
The G5 can't find a driver...but it does see the printer and
identifies it by name.

Are there any other ways to solve this problem and get the X75 up and
running on an iMac G5?

Smurf startup issues

2010-04-05 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Listers,

My G3 BW will not boot up.unless I use Safe Mode. When I try to
boot normally, I see a rectangular black box in the center of my
monitor. The box appears pretty early in the start-up sequence.

I have nothing connected to the G3. No printer or CAT-5 for
internet. The OS is 10.4.11 and the G3 has 1 GB of RAM.

I have done a complete re-format of the HD (20GB Maxtor). This hard
drive will start my Sawtooth Mac, but not the Smurf.

Any ideas what might be causing the problem with the Smurf?

Re: OT - to UPS or not to UPS

2010-03-27 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Most people are too cheap to buy good surge protectors (I definitely
fit into that category!). That's where the marketing for the UPS
comes in -- you end up buying the better surge protector because
it's part of the UPS box.

What should I look for if I was in the market for a good surge protector?
Are there specific ratings that are a must?

A good surge protector sounds like cheap insurance.
Can you give make and model?

You can try this: (it may or may not work)

Go here http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ and download the package.

Double-click on it to ungzip/untar it. Go into the resulting folder
and find the PPD folder. in there open the hpcups folder.

Find the file hp-psc_1500_series.ppd.gz, drag it to your desktop or
someplace else you can find it easily.

Double click on that file to ungzip it.

Back in system preferences, select the HP printer, and when it asks
for a driver, select 'Other'. Navigate to the ppd file you just
uncompressed and select it.

See if it works. It may not support all the printing functions, and
scanning and faxing won't be supported but you'll be able to print
if it works.

Dual 500 G4

2010-02-20 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Dual 500 Mhz G4
1 GB RAM
2 internal HDs

I have MenuMeters installed so that I can monitor the activity of
each processor.

This evening I noticed that one of my processors was not
running--MenuMeters showed 0%.

To remedy the situation I zapped the PRAM, did a low level reset and restarted.

The G4 restarted in OS 9.2.2, and indicated that my date and time
were incorrect. When I went to the Date and Time Control Panel to
set the date and time, my Mac crashed.

I ran DiskWarrior and it repaired several itemsthe same issues on
each of my internal drives.

I don't know what the problem was with my date and time, or why the
Mac crashed when I tried to set it. My PRAM battery is freshyet
the date showed as 1904. Strange.

Thankfully, I am back to normal now.

What is the keyboard command that allows you to re-start and then
select a startup disk?

 Larry,

Other than getting a USB floppy, you can make Disk Images
of the floppies from a computer with Disk Utility installed.
Burn the Disk Images on a CD and transfer them. Disk Images
are the equivalent of a physical volume such as hard drive,
floppy, etc. You just double click them on your desk top and
 they act like a floppy.

Re: Why are you (still) using PowerPC-based Macs?

2010-01-23 Thread Lawrence David Eden
For me, the answer is simple: My G4 PPC works perfectly and runs the
software that I need at an acceptable speed. An added advantage is
that my G4 can still boot into OS 9 when needed and I can connect my
old SCSI hard drives easily too.

I have several friends that insist on buying the latest and the
greatest from Apple or various software vendors. I, on the other
hand, am happy with what I have. My only complaint with my G4 is
that it is a little jerky when I watch videos on the
internet...voice and video are a little out of sync.

My wife has a G5 iMac, and I have an Intel based laptop that one of
my schools issued meboth are very fast and very slickbut
neither Mac makes me envious. So, in short, I will upgrade when I
have to but probably not before.

Re: Laserwriter 4/600 cartridge problem

2009-12-27 Thread Lawrence David Eden
I bought a reconditioned cartridge for my LaserWriter 4/600 ages ago.
Not used it all that much (this is the bit that hurts!) and it
suddenly started causing darkish tones on one side of the paper that
was printed. I pulled the cartridge out and it was extraordinary,
when I tried to gently sway it to even the toner it simply started
to leak out of both sides like it thought it was a sand egg timer.
Bloody hell! Why would the toner do this, are there seals that
deteriorate?

Anyway, appreciate anyone knowing where best to get a replacement (I
am so loathe to get rid of it, I even have a perfect spare machine!
But perhaps I should just buy a new USB machine, they are cheap
enough I guess. I already have to start a 7300 on 9 to use it from my
Quicksilver on X via ethernet and a little apple supplied program...

I went through this very problem with a replacement cartridge for my
LaserSelect 360. Rather then tell you where I bought the cartridge,
I will tell you this: my NEW USB printer works much better than the
LS 360 ever did. IMHO, you should forget about the 4/600. Don't
waste any more money trying another cartridge when for about the same
price you can join the 21st Century.

I rebooted into OS 9 and ran Software Update. No new version of QT
here, but I did update to 9.2.2.

Question: What is the procedure for updating Classic? How do I get
QT installed on my OS 9 System Folder?

Thanks,

Larry

Re: Beige G3 suddenly won't turn on

2009-12-03 Thread Lawrence David Eden
When you open a Beige, it is easy to slightly unseat one or more of
the cards. Press down firmly on all cards. Also know as The Push
and Pray System for fixing computers.

G3 zif and spare RAM from the BW. But, now that I have opened the
case and removed parts I can not get the Beige to turn on.

When I press the power button the PS fan comes on for about a second
and then shuts down. That's it. I have tried leaving the battery out
O/N and resetting the MB, I have put the original 266MHz zif back in,
tried it with all the RAM modules it previously used, and without, and
tried it with all PCI cards removed. Same thing. Did I accidentally
fry the MB when I removed the cards? I now see a warning sticker on
the top of the PS that says you must turn off the computer and wait 5
minutes before removing cards from the slots. I think I had actually
had the computer off for more like a day when I removed the cards, but
maybe my memory is faulty. I can't think of anything else I might
have done to it. Anyone seen this failure more before?

Re: LaserJet 4100n problem

2009-12-02 Thread Lawrence David Eden
I had similar issues with an Apple LaserSelect 360. I tried several
new toner cartridges/ I cleaned everything.twice, but no joy.

I hated to part with my faithful servant after so many good years,
but I gave in and bought a Lexmark Laser printer.

If I learned anything from this episode it was that printers are not
worth the time and trouble to fix. In the long run, it would have
been far easier and much less expensive to just buy a new printer.

FWIW, the Lexmark E120 that I bought, is better in every way than my
beloved 360.

Your mileage may vary

Larry

Hi,

Hoping someone can point me here...

Our LaserJet 4100n is having some print problems -- light areas on
the pages, schmutzy dots, some light vertical bars.

M'housemate thought it was a toner cartridge issue, so he tried two
others (not new) - didn't fix.

I grabbed the original toner cart (real HP), tipped it a bit, and put
it back in. That made the pages print evenly (yea, the toner level
is low), but still with some schmutz and several vertical light bars.

Then I followed the directions in the manual... Printed the cleaning
page, used the cleaning page, printed a test. Immediately schmutz
went away! Five more cleaning pages later, and all the light bars
except one have gone away. That remaining bar is about 1/8 wide, 3
3/4 from the right edge of the paper; light but annoying. It's
quality has not changed at all, during the last couple of cleanings.

What should I try next? Is this a fuser problem? Or is this a
roller problem? Or? If it's a roller, how do I figure out which
one? How do I get in there to clean? I've been looking for some
sort of doc online that shows the internal guts of the thing, but so
far nada.

According to the printer's web interface, the maintenance kit is at
67% and the HP toner cart is at 4%.

Thanks,
- Dan.

installing old software

Re: Classic on Ruby Red iMac

Jim, I have the CD of 9.0. Held down the C key and booted from the CD.
The install attempt failed. I got a message that said I could not
install 9 on the volume with 10.4 and to choose Options. The choice
there was a Clean install and I don't really know what that entails,
so I quit the installer. What did I miss doing?

The iMac firmware is up to date.

Jane

Jane,

A Clean Install is what you want. It creates a new System Folder,
and that folder will be OS 9. You will then have Classic on your iMac.

Hey Larry,
Does it just seem to take a very long time to boot or it doesn't
boot at all??? Also what it the processer speed??? I had this
problem with a 366 G3 Clamshell iBook and it was running Panther
10.3.9 so I down graded it to Jaguar 10.2.8 and the problem went
away... Now I know there will be some people out there who will say
there is nothing wrong running Tiger in these G3's but I tried
everything I could think of and couldn't get it to boot up any
faster... Even with Jaguar in the 366 takes a little time but is
probably twice as fast then Panther was. I have a 466 Clamshell
running Jaguar and I have booted them up together at the same time
and the 466 always beats out the 366 by maybe 30-60 seconds... Also
I forgot to mention these machines are maxed with memory 576mb...
One thing great about the towers (desktops) you might be able to
increase the proc speed and I would always max the memory!!!
CoolKat

It won't finish bootingI fear that the HD is a little long in the
tooth as suggested by one of our colleagues on the List.
Interestingly, it was working fine until I updated JAVA via Software Update.

The processor speed is 400 MHz

(I'm assuming you meant USB v1.1 since AFAIK v1.0 was not widely
adopted.)

I've got a PC laptop (or maybe two) around here which only has USB 1.1

moving non-big files to/from USB attached storage. I suppose it would
be OK for copying pictures from a camera if they weren't too big and
you had patience.

OTOH, I have also tried to use USB v1.1 to attach an external drive.
My experience was that it really won't work for most of the things

I'm guessing you mean the 5200 LC? You might be confusing these with the
AIO G3's which DID have 3 PCI slots, but the 5200 LC's (which are AIO type

installing Classic over Tiger

2009-09-11 Thread Lawrence David Eden

I (we) have solved my problem with OS 9 installation over Tiger.

I was attempting the installation on 2 different Macs. One was a
front loading iMac G3 and the other was an iBook G4.

I was able to boot from my OS 9.2.1 CD on the iMac only. The
installer was able to run and I had to do a Clean Install of OS 9.
The installation was done over an existing Tiger 10.4.11 and I did
not need to reformat my HD. I do not need to boot from OS 9; just
run a couple of simple programs, and that problem is solved.

The iBook is another story. Apparently, due to a user stupidity
error, I thought that I was booting off the OS 9.2.1 CD..NOT SO.
And that is why the iBook kept telling me that it needed an OS 9
System Folder in order to run the installer. Looks like I will have
to dig up the CDs that came with the iBook if I want to install
Classic.

So, many thanks to my colleagues on this List who have offered spot
on advice on how to solve the mystery. You have all contributed to
the education of this old Mac user, and I am grateful.

.you can slap OS 9 onto a disk anytime.
If you want to boot from it (not just use it as Classic Mode) then
you need to make sure the driver was put on the disk when it was

Here is where I run into trouble. The Mac needs to run Classic in
order to install Classic.
When I boot from the OS 9.2.1 installation CD, the Mac boots just
fine, but when I attempt to run the installer, Classic tries to
startand then informs me that I do not have a usable OS 9 folder
from which to run Classic. Frustrating!

Disk Warrior is finding issues to fix, so right now, I am running DW
over and over again until it comes up clean. Any other suggestions?

Re: iMac G3

2009-09-06 Thread Lawrence David Eden

  Booting into Safe Mode (by
holding down the Shift key), clears the system and kernel caches then
rebuilds them. After that just reboot normally.

I tried Zapping the PRAM and doing a low level re-set (set-defaults),
reset-all).

Does that accomplish the same thing as your suggestion?

crash on shutdown

2009-09-05 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Here is what I did:

I used target mode from an iBook G4 to my iMac G3. I needed to use
the iBook's DVD drive to install an upgrade to OS 10.4 onto the G3.

The installation ran smoothly, but now, when I shut down the G3 I get
Apple's small black multi-language screen that tells me that I need
to re-start my computer.

I ran Disk Warrior and found NO problems on the G3

Any ideas what might be going on with the iMac?

Re: Question regarding non-mac monitors/display

2009-09-03 Thread Lawrence David Eden
Hello,

Quick question, request for advice. I was
wondering what are some of the pros and cons
and/or pieces ( cables/etcŠ) that I would need to
hook up a non-apple display to a G5 Quad? Is this
even possible? The monitor I am looking at does
have a DVI port. Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a Dell 20 flat wide screen
monitor for my G4. Works perfectly and it was a
great deal at $112.00 delivered. If Apple
monitors were that inexpensive, I would rather
have gone with one of thembut you know the
drill.

So the pros: Price and performance
The Cons: none

Ultra-SCSI on a G4

2009-09-01 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Greetings,

I have an Adaptec AHA-2930B(Mac) that prevents my G4 from waking from
sleep. I have removed the card and the Mac sleeps and wakes on
demand.

So, if I want to connect my external SCSI drives, what do I need to
install? I use the SCSI very infrequently, so my question is more
about getting an education than solving a problem.

MacBook Pro

2009-08-30 Thread Lawrence David Eden

My daughter has a 4 year old MacBook Pro that she tells me is
starting to run noticeably slower. She has plenty of HD space and
RAM and a G4 processor.

What can she do to revive her old Mac? Interestingly, her Mac will
not boot from my DiskWarrior CD. I am using version 3.0.3. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Larry

Clarke
He said early model... I would assume (knowing the saying) that he means
tray loader or maybe pre firewire.

The iMac has built in FireWire, USB.350 Mhz.
The CD is a Slot Loaderno tray.

More info on model would help us give u an definitive answer.

Hope I have provided the info you need

MacBook Pro has an intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor. Perhaps
you mean she has a PowerBook G4?

Use a tool such as OnyX to run the three system maintenance tasks,
clear caches, etc.

Re: OSX10.4 on G3

2009-08-29 Thread Lawrence David Eden

A question for the List Mavens,

I have an iMac at one of my schools. It is an early model and does
not have a DVD drive. I have 10.3.9 installed and want to upgrade to
10.4x. I have Apple's 10.4 update disc, but it is a DVD.

Is there another way to upgrade my iMacor must I purchase a DVD drive?

Thanks,

Larry

Re: Sonnet Encore upgrade for desktop beige G3

2009-08-25 Thread Lawrence David Eden

A couple months ago I bought in eBay an used 500MHz Sonnet Encore
ZIF card to upgrade a Beige desktop G3. The seller send me a pdf
file with the installation instructions but nothing else.

Due to work/burned computer/personal issues I wasn`t able to have a
close look to the upgrade intil now. I have read the instruction
manual and I have some doubts.

* First of all, has someone tried this upgrade before? Any tips?
* As I can see, I need to install de software included in the Sonnet
CD to install de G4 card, is that correct? The computer is currently
running Mac OS 9.1 (Spanish), has 416Mb of RAM, a FireWire/USB PCI
card and two HDs. It havent been used for some years, but runs
smoothly so far. VRM is correct.

Gorka

I had a similar set-up that worked fine for years. The directions
that you list above are correct. IFRC, you have to take a look at
the Beige's current processorthere were issues with some of them
that interfered with the installation of the Sonnet card. Do you see
that in your instruction manual? If you are planning on installing
OS X, be sure that the Sonnet is installed first.
