File sharing in Tiger
Hi all, hopefully someone may know why we cannot connect our two macs? Powerbook 17" hires G4 and G5 2Ghz Mac OS 4.11 on both. File sharing allowed on both, but when we try to connect via Finder Cmmnd + k to the other mac we cannot connect as a registered user we always get connection failed. The user presented each time is what we expect - that is the user we are running as in the calling mac. The password is assumed to be our respective user password. We have tried browsing to find the other mac rather than assuming the presented name is correct but still no change. We can connect as a guest but that does not give us the access we need. From google search we have learned that we should be able to connect with our normal user/password combination so has anyone had/solved this problem? Is there a way to tell the system that our passwords are good for file sharing? I vaguely remember something about using Netinfo Manager or Network Utility for something similar to this years ago but cannot find or recall the details! Anyone? QS2002 shuts down when sleep selected
Hi all, Quicksilver 2002 800 single cpu Mac os 10.4.11 Tiger 172GB startup drive 280GB additional data drive (not part of startup user but includes another user also on Tiger) Recently this G4 has decided to shutdown when requested to sleep. Occasionally it shuts down when not requested (while not working/ active). I have replaced the battery, tried different startup drives, and... removed power plug, removed battery, pressed power button, pressed smu/pmu/? button on motherboard ONCE... Apple 17" ADC replaced by an old 15" non-adc screen (as it seems to be associated with sleeping - a timed screen sleep causes shutdown)... all to no avail - it still cannot sleep but insists on a shut down. TIA Ged Hi, It's some years ago since I used such software but as I remember InDesign is vector (postscript) and the jpeg format is for rasterised images - if you have Pshop you could export the spreads from InDesign as pdf and then raster them into Pshop to vary the resolution and then save them as high quality jpegs and try that. The resolution needs to be high- ish to get typefaces to appear clearly - possibly between 180 and 360ppi to get somewhere near the legibility of a pdf. Not sure what the tv screen will make of it as this is down to the dot pitch resolution of the tv but many modern screens/dvd players have the ability to convert from mpeg and jpeg on the fly now and can adapt to various resolutions and frame rates instantly. Not sure it can be a cd though - shouldn't it be dvd for video_ts? This G5 is late(October) 2005 with 8 ram slots - does it need to be a PCI-E card or will PCI do it? It needs to be PCIe. However, PCIe support is incomplete on Power Macs; any device connected to it will almost certainly not be bootable, let alone Target Disk Mode-capable. It should work once OS X is booted, though. Cameron, thanks for that detail. Now I have tiger 10.4.11 up and running I'll just do my backups via usb2, though I will get a 6-9 firewire cable and try the 800 jack later. Why partial failure on G4 display card
Hi all, PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 2002, Mac OS 10.4. Apple 17 adc display and a generic 15 display on the vga link. These have all been working quietly together for about two years. Last night I tried to burn ASD 2.5.8 to DVD using Roxio Toast. I have never before burned on this mac. All ok until writing the leadout which did not complete. Unable to eject dvd using Toast, keyboard, Finder - all failed. Restarted while holding down mouse button but it failed to eject the dvd and what's more failed to startup! Tried target disc mode - nothing showed although.Command shift P R - failed to chime. Option - failed to give load disc options. Replaced macally keyboard with apple keyboard, replaced logitech mouse with apple mouse - failed. Removed all usb except keyboard and mouse, removed all cards from internal slots - failed. Finally removed second/vga display - success! So, the display was suspect, however when I tried that display connected to my trusty Pismo it worked as usual - perfectly. Which leaves the Nvidia GeForce4 MX as the only culprit, and with it the question why is the adc connection is still working perfectly with the 17 Apple display? While all this was happening both displays had a faint glow as if they were ready to go. It seemed as if the mac found the generic display but then let go as no rgb input appeared after a while. I guess it would be a good idea to look around for a new display card - unless someone has knowledge of a different reason for this event? Re: 2004/week 10 dual G5 with one cpu dead
Kris, Adam Thanks for your response. On closer inspection it does seem to have 2 single cpus and I assume the upper one is not working going by the fan speeds - 300rpm upper, 1000rpm lower. When my other half lets me get at the machine I'll try the simple fixes - pram reset and see what I can glean for any nvram optins. I don't have AHT nor ASD. Is AHT available to download burn? Ged On 23 /05/ 2012, at 16:25, t...@io.com wrote: In the list of devices connected to my router and assigned IP addresses, everything shows up as I would expect, except a G4 MDD (10.4.11) and an 800 MHz G4 ILamp (10.2.8). For those two machines the router displays something like unknown_MAC address without the for the Device Name. I tried entering the machine names into the optional DHCP name box (forgot exactly what it's called) in the System Prefs/Networking/ Ethernet/DHCP window, but that had no effect, other than, when I clicked Apply Now it caused the computer to release its current IP and obtain a new one. My old System 9.1 machine shows up in the router list under its machine name, even. It's just these two OSX Macs that don't. Now that I'm at work and where I can test it, the only thing I can think of is that the two Macs in question have space characters in their machine names. Do routers reject machine names if they have spaces in them, or is something else going on here? If the latter, what? Is there some way to get the machine name to show up under Device Name on the router, instead of the MAC address? The router in question is one of ATT's HGV3600 modem/router gateways. User files on second drive
Newly acquired Quicksilver (2002) G4 Tiger 4.11, 40GB system drive and 180GB drive added for data files. I would like to have the User files (some 82GB) on the second drive (Data Disk) while starting from the system drive (Mac HD). I'm sure I've seen an article about this before but cannot find it anywhere. I seem to recall it is not as simple as placing an alias in the 'Users' folder so I would like to get the real info before setting up the G4 for use by my wife. Can anyone direct me to the information about this? Re: Getting OS9.1 onto MDD
guess I'm gonna have to use one of the Quicksilvesr as an OS9 machine - I was hoping to install the image processing (for RAW files) software that came with my Minolta DiMAGE - a 12 year old camera that is in no way obsolete (IMHO!) and is as superb as something that originally cost £1200 would be .and also wanted it for a couple of older games that want Classic Apple provides Camera RAW support for OS X, and the Minolta DiMAGE is mentioned specifically in each update, so I think you're covered in OS X and won't be needing these OS 9 drivers. Here's a version of Tiger 10.4: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL303 Interesting, I downloaded the file at this link and it says This software requires Mac OS X version 10.4.8 and exits. 10.4.11 nor good enough? I believe this means that the Camera Raw support for this model is already included in later versions of the software; otherwise their updates usually tack on 'or later' to the requirements. Updates like these are their oops! we forgot to include something in these specific versions! variety. However, this merely means that that particular raw format is supported, the driver is installed; you still need to have an application (like LightRoom, Photoshop, Aperture, etc) that actually manipulates the RAW files. If for some reason it isn't included, you can use Pacifist to install this regardless of what the Installer says. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Tiger/Classic on dual G4/5
Just restarted Tiger on my Pismo/400MHZ, 1GB ram), started Activity Monitor, no other programs - System taking 1-5% Idle 87-96% Remainder would be Activity Monitor. Started Classic Started Pagemaker - no documents/files open - System 13-25% TrueBlue(Classic) 72-82% Activity Monitor 3-7% Idle 0% ! Always like that when Pagemaker is running. My better half needs to use Pagemaker in classic while using OSX simultaneously. Pagemaker uses up all the spare cpu cycles and slows down all other programs, and I assume this would still be the case with a faster Mac. Depends on how PageMaker is written. If it's polling for user input continuously, then it will certainly always (try to) use some cpu time, not a lot %-wise if you have lots to spare. That's OS 9 (and below) for you. Seems odd to me that PageMaker would be continuously piggy. Have you watched the system with Activity Monitor, to see what resources are actually in such low demand that the whole system runs slowly? if we move to a dual G4/G5 how does Tiger handle the two cpus? OS X (and OS 9) supports multiple processors (discrete, multi core, threads) two ways. First: when a process or thread is ready for cpu time, it is dispatched to one of the CPU/cores. Second: if the application knows how to use non-sequential threads, then the threads are dispatched the same way - to whichever CPU/core has time available. OS 9 supports letting programs use multiple processors but it's up to the program to handle multiple threads. Will it assign classic/pagemaker to one cpu only, leaving the other cpu to do any OSX work needed? No. Under OS X, scheduling is done preemptively, as resources are available. That means a process is given a quantum time slice on a CPU/core, and the CPU is taken away when the slice ends or when the process becomes otherwise blocked (waiting for i/o, etc). Classic is a process under OS X... so when its slice ends, the app running within Classic is suspended. When the next slice is available to that process, it is re-assigned to a CPU/core... Of course, if the process is still loaded in one particular CPU/ core, then assignment preference is given to using that particular CPU/core. But Pagemaker will be using only one CPU at a time (I'm guessing that OS X doesn't support OS 9's version of multiprocessor support. This would be ideal for us if one cpu is kept free of the Pagemaker loading. You need to think of the OS being the high muckety, not the CPU. The CPU, like memory, is *just* a resource that the OS controls / manages. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: PM G5: When booting the DVD drive opens up

This happens just a couple seconds after pressing the ON button (so it doesn't seem software-related) The DVD drive (original, AFAIK) works flawlessly otherwise. TenFourFox missing bookmarks
Hi I now have the latest TenFourFox and still do not have bookmarks - I try to import from safari but nothing appears after hitting 'done'. Also, nothing happens when I ask for a new bookmarks folder and saving a bookmark (command+D) generates nothing. I have tried restoring permissions (one font in error) and verified hdd. Restore from backup didn't work but that may be because I haven't made a bookmarks backup. I have tried these options one at a time with a quit and reopen of TenFourFox and all together with no difference. I have also performed Repair Disc Permissions with DiscUtility to no avail. I can't replicate any of these issues in either 10.0.3 or 11. It does indeed sound like a permissions problem, and repairing permissions does not fix everything, only the ones that Disk Utility specifically knows about. I'd look at the specific permissions on your profile, which is usually in your home directory, Library, Application Support, Mozilla Firefox. Short of that, you could try deleting that folder altogether, since you have no bookmarks anyway, and see if it is recreated correctly. Otherwise, I'm sorry, but since I can't cause the problem myself I don't have any other suggestions for you. Cameron, thanks for the tip - it worked as you thought.
