I will go on to the blastbay site and see what the latest version is. THe side scroller game does sound rather interesting, and full of new challenges. For those who haven't seen it go to www.audiogames.net and you can locate it under the news headlines section of the site. [Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script
Thomas or any other major coder out there, Please give me your opinion of a possible technical solution to getting SAPI into our games. I recently discovered that Windows XP and later include the ability to run Visual Basic scripts from the DOS command line. Also, I recently discovered that said VB Scripts can speak SAPI voices. Thirdly, I can invoke VB from within a Java app. I wrote an experimental Java program that does just that. It seems that we could ship our games with a simple VB script that they invoke, and Voila! we have SAPI speech. What do you think? As both a game developer and game player, what are the negatives, if any? [Audyssey] ESA Report supports white paper
ESA has just released their 2010 annual “Essential Facts about the computer and video game industry” report. The percent of American households that plays computer or video games has risen to 67% from 65%. The average game player age has also risen to 34, and the percent of gamers over the age of 50 has risen to 26% more than those gamers under age 18. All of these figures support the findings spelled out in the white paper written by Eleanor Robinson from 7-128 Software and Stephanie Walker from AbleGamers Foundation. It is clear that if the trend continues, more and more potential customers will be unable to play computer and video games because age-related disabilities (as well as non-age-related disabilities) prevent them from accessing the games of their choice. If game developers continue to ignore including accessibility options in their games there will be a lot of very unhappy former customers. Since many games take several years to develop, the loss of potential revenue will only continue to increase even if the developers start the changes today. This information might result in more accessible main-stream games if the developers realize the potential revenue loss. You can read the Gaming on a Collision Course paper at our website, 7128.com or at the AbleGamers website. Re: [Audyssey] ESA Report supports white paper
Hmmm, the under 18 stat is actually rather worrying, considdering I began playing games like space invaders and Berzerk at about the age of 4. It sounds a lot like what my friend said about her cousin, kids don't want the latest gigantic 3D graphical extravaganser which the industry churns out, they'd rather have something easy and fun like good old super Mario brothers. I hope notice will be taken of this, though I'm afraid the capitalist crytic in me says probably not. Beware the grue! [Audyssey] Looking for some usb gamepad advice.
Hi to all, I'm thinking of up dating my philips 2909. Someone recommended a ps3 usb gamepad. Just was wondering if anyone from the list has one and if so, what they think of it? Also was looking for a layout of all of the buttons and their features and if it has one stick or two. Also, if at all possible, a txt copy of the manual would be nice as well. I'm looking for something that has force feedback of course. Then must work with the three flight simulators. Jim Kitchen's puppy one, BPC Programs tdv and let's see if we can't get it to work with fsx and IYP. The jurrey is still out on fsx and IYP. Would like it to work with aliens in the outback. Then from bsc games classic pipe, hunter, troopanum and especially blast chamber. The philips 2909 works greatwith puppy one and tdv, but I can't get it to work with blast chamber and it's tricky to get it to work with the other above mentioned games. So was looking for some advice to up grade. Someone told me that it does work with blast chamber. I think the problem I was having with the philips 2909 and blast chamber is that I couldn't twist off the valves. I couldn't even get through the practice round with the usb handheld and that's bad enough. SMILES. So thanks to all in advance. Re: [Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script
hmmm that would work however av and other security programs like to detect vbs scripts as viruses. but yeah that is a point not sure how usefull it would be. At 02:23 a.m. 20/06/2010, you wrote: Thomas or any other major coder out there, Please give me your opinion of a possible technical solution to getting SAPI into our games. Thirdly, I can invoke VB from within a Java app. I wrote an experimental Java program that does just that. It seems that we could ship our games with a simple VB script that they invoke, and Voila! we have SAPI speech. What do you think? [Audyssey] materiamagica
well on the advice of a friend from the audiogames.net forums, I'm now giving this another try sinse apparently the timed quests aren't too bad when youve got used to the game, and this was what frustrated the heck out of me before. (beware spoilers below). so far, I'm level 9, have completed the errands for the village master, done the ghosts a favour, got the orienteering mark, got the inhailer from the boy on the road, got the first leaf from the graveyard and the second from the caves, as well as getting the mothers portrate. I'm now a litle stuck. The maze to the dragon is proving a right royal pest, and though I met the gypsy woman on the road and have killed the three gypsies she wanted, she doesn't seem to be around anymore, neither do the two blue and red imps for dealing with the statue. I guess the gypsy and the imps I just have to wander around until they appear again (randomly appearing npcs are such a pest), but that maze is an absolute terror! I got through it before, but only after a good few hours of trying, so any tips would be appreciated, also letting me know if I've missed anything, other than atraxus sinse I'm waiting until I level up to take him on. Re: [Audyssey] Registration methods
I couldn't agree more. I recently had my laptop's hard drive go out on me and therefore it had to be replaced, though thankfully it was still well within the warranty I purchased along with the machine a year ago. It also helped that my dad had created system restore CD's the instant the laptop was configured properly after taking it out of the box. But anyway, at the time of the crash I had copies of SOD, GTC, LW and even Sarah on the machine. But even though I've managed to reinstall and reregister most games i haven't written to request new keys for the GMA titles precisely because of this situation. The sad part is that SOD used to be a name and key-based system, at least back when I purchased it back in '04. It's fortunate because at the time I was using a dinosaur of a computer running WIndows 98 Second Edition with only 64 MB of ram. Then the machine had a stroke or something and died on me, and then I moved out here to Idaho and, since I was living with my folks I was using my mom's computer which was even older. But fortunately the unlock code I had for SOD was valid, so I was able to install it on the new machine. This was still V1.0 as I recall. THen 1.2 came out and switched to hardware-based registration and every time i've had to get a new computer or the computer has crashed I've had to write David. I'm just glad he's thus far been willing to replace keys, but it just proves the point that if people would stick to name-based keys this probably wouldn't happen so much and the developer could focus on the really important stuff. I've been working on a white paper on this issue, and was planning on publishing it it after I am done upgrading the USA Games website. However, the conclusions in my white paper are pretty much the same as yours below. Hardware based product registration doesn't work. For one thing in my white paper I site a number of products such as Windows Vista, Windows 7, Jaws, etc that use some kind of hardware based licensing such as tying the product key to the computer hardware or in Jaws's case a dongle. In each and every case I was able to locate cracks for each of those software products one could download and install that would disable or remove the licensing system in the software. That, of course, proves that no matter how good you think your security system is there is someone out there who can break it and then redistribute the crack to others over the internet. In fact, my research seams to show the more difficult you make it to crack the registration system the more crackers will try and break it until they eventually find away to do so. It is like a big challenge to them. However, the bottom line is that given enough motivation any security system can be cracked by someone with enough skill to do so. I then go on in the white paper to discuss the many ways that hardware based license keys have harmed both the developer and the legal customer alike. For one thing developers have to constantly deal with key replacements, because computers and hardware often does change invalidating the license key. Usually, companies like Microsoft charge lots of money for a hardware key replacement which is totally unfair to the customer as he or she has likely purchased a legal copy of the software, and shouldn't have to pay extra for a new key. At least not a large sum of money. Bottom line hardware based keys are a major inconvenience for everyone involved, and don't even stop piracy from taking place. The final section of the white paper goes into the problem that hardware licensing, current marketing, etc hasnt' addressed the underlying issues involved in software piracy. Instead of addressing those issues as best as we can the software industry has decided to forge ahead with more and more restrictive licensing systems, and as a result the legal customers suffer more than the pirates it was suppose to protect the software from. One of the big issues, of course,is money. The number one group of people most likely to pirate software are those who are finantially unable to purchase the software legally. Jaws, for example, is a very expensive piece of software for most people, and the problem is made worse when you take in account the majority of Freedom Scientific's customers are unenployed and living on some sort of disability income. They don't offer any kind of payment plan, nor do they lower their prices for foreign markets where the income is considerably less than in the united States. Do to the current price of the software and the way it is marketed it is not surprising that someone somewhere would crack it and make it available to those low income

Hi Bryan, Definitely. I have never fully agreed with GMA's decision to use there current licensing system either, but I do understand where David Greenwood is coming from. He felt the old system was too week, and it was far too easy to pirate the GMA software. Re: [Audyssey] Registration methods
I can relate to what Thomas Ward wrote concerning registration methods in his white paper. My Dad used to say that we should always lock the door when we leave the house. He would not buy big heavy locks, chain locks, or other such devices to keep burglars out. He said, If you make it really difficult for someone to get in, you've just told them that there is something really valuable inside. Now, they're going to be more determined to get it from you, and they will get it. So, not only have you lost the battle, but you've also lost the war. You spend the money to keep them out, and they'll certainly get in. - Original Message - From: jenni...@4dewitt.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, June 18, 2010 9:36 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Registration methods my brother will be there on Monday June 21, 2010 we will talk later I'm at work Take care Jenn Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: dark d...@xgam.org Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 14:30:12 To: Gamers Discussion listgamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Registration methods Hi Tom. Re: [Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script
Hi John, Ideally I'd use something like the JNI or JNA to wrap SAPI directly, but I think using a VB Script is definitely the easiest way to go about it in your case. I'm no expert on this topic, but it sounds like something that is worth a try. The only downside to this I can see is that SAPI tends to break quite a lot in my experience. I don't know why, but some peopel install and then uninstall certain third-party voices which ends up breaking SAPI completely. When that happens it can be a real tech support issue helping them getting SAPI working correctly again. It is a nice technology when it works, but when it doesn't it can be a major pain in the butt. Smile. On 6/19/10, John Bannick jbann...@7128.com wrote: Thomas or any other major coder out there, Please give me your opinion of a possible technical solution to getting SAPI into our games. Re: [Audyssey] Registration methods
Hi, Exactly. Part of it is a certain attitude, a mentality, that black hatters have. The more difficult the ssecurity system is the more determined the black hatter is to crack it. At that point it is less to do with pirating the software than the thrill of breaking a difficult security system, and being able to brag to his/her buddies on the internet that he or she broke this or that security system. Black hatters love to brag about their accomplishments, and there is no glory in cracking something easy to crack. I would think that you wouldn't then need BGT installed. But maybe you won't once it's officially released. THat would be a bit disappointing if you actually had to have BGT installed to play any game created with it since probably not everyone will. That's probably why a lot of people are switching over to Mac, and not merely because you don't need to pay for a separate screen reader with Mac computers anymore. I'd get one myself but for a lack of funds. Of course even if I do I'll probably always have a Mac and a Windows machine around so I have both for when I need them. I have never fully agreed with GMA's decision to use there current licensing system either, but I do understand where David Greenwood is coming from. He felt the old system was too week, and it was far too easy to pirate the GMA software. Unfortunately, the new system is too restrictive if you don't know how to defeat the registration system, and yes I know of some cracks out there to break the registration system for the GMA Games. So in the end what did switching to the new registration system really accomplish. Not really much. Black hatters will always, always, always find out how to defeat your security system leaving the developer wondering why his/her great security system failed. Meanwhile those of us who paid for the software, did things the legal way, have to put up with more and more restrictive licenses that makes it harder to install a game on more than one computer or install it on a new one when we get rid of our old one.
