Re: [Audyssey] Suggestion about the list

2011-12-28 Thread dark
Well Quentin, that is true and might be a possible way around, however most
people might find it irritating to have an audigoames.net link automatically
chucked at the bottom of their posts.

in fact on the couple of Yahoo lists I'm on that do this I find it slightly
irritating myself when I want to read say the original message I replied to.

Also, in my experience, if something is always there, people look at it
less. I think new members would probably just take it as an auto advert and
ignore it. Also, it seems a bit silly for the majority of members on the
list to keep having this message sinse obviously all the regulars already
know! about audiogames.net.

Of course this is just my opinion on an attached text and link and other
people might think differently.

Hello,
I think you could do even more. You could also add an audiogames.net link
at the end of each e-mail. Many mailing-lists automatically add a
signature containing useful links at the end of each e-mail going through.

Obviously one major purpose of the games list is to answer questions about

It seems one of the most common is the where do I get games question. I
don't mean someone asking about where to get stratogy games or games with

For this reason, I do wonder if it might be possible to put links to the

possible to alter the text of that mail, put together a sort of short

a very quick and easy page that people get when they join.

that way new members can start finding games streight off the bat when
they join up, rather than having to sit on list and (as a recent new

Of course, I suspect people will stil ask about their favourite game types
or subject matter, or games on a given os, but stil this might help to at
least give people a bit of a start, and avoid the where do I get games

Re: [Audyssey] New golf courses

2011-12-28 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

Well, the very first accessible games that I made and shared on the FidoNet
mailing lists such as Blind Talk, Blink Talk and NFB Talk were my casino games.
You know black jack, the slot machine and 5 card draw poker. They were on the
Henter Joyce BBS. And the thing about them was, I wrote Jaws for dos script
files to make them accessible. I later learned how to make them accessible for
all dos screen readers and when I up loaded them to the PC Ohio BBS they got
distributed to all of the BBSs around the world via the planet connect system.
And of course I also made sure to up load them to Willie Wilson's Blink Link
BBS. The next game was my dos version of my golf game. And then probably the
trucker game. You see where this is going? That is that I have converted all
of my early games to much better windows sapi5 versions. I have the source
code for some of the games, but not the very first versions as I wrote better
versions and that is the code that I still have. So the versions that are on
my dos page is the earliest versions of my games that I believe that I have.

Thanks for asking.

Re: [Audyssey] Suggestion about the list

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Quentin,

Well, the problem I have with putting that information in the message
footer is that often times that information goes unread. For example,
every single message sent out on the Audyssey List gives the
information on how to unsubscribe from the list, but I can't tell you
how many times the moderators have been asked how do I unsubscribe
from the list?

I don't know if they just don't read down far enough to see it, or
they've seen it so many times that they ignore it and forget what it
actually says over time. Either way the answer is there in plane sight
both in the welcome message and in the message footer of each post and
it still goes unnoticed. Although, we might want to put this
information in multiple places, because in my experience some people
are just lazy. They don't want to take time looking up things on their
own unless its easy to find and quickly available. I might talk to
Raul and see if he'll give me access to the website so I can add some
useful information like this to the home page where it would be easy
to find and immediately available to anyone who does a quick search of
the ?Audyssey site.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Competition time was Re: BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Philip,

That sounds fair enough to me. I can't speak for everyone, of course,
but I've always been a bit of a quick study.

For example, back in 2004 I noticed a lot of job applications were
looking for people experienced with .NET. Of course, I left college
before .NET was released so had to learn it on my own. So I got a
book, Sam's Teach Yourself C# .NET in 21 days, and completed the
course in under a month. In order to practice my skills I started STFC
a month later and ended up getting better at the language and learning
more as I went. So I know picking up the basics in a month can be done
if a person is somewhat familiar with programming, and from what I've
seen of BGT it is much much simpler than taking on a programming
language and x number of APIs anyway.

I do have a question though. Is there any specific genres or types of
games we are suppose to develop during this contest?

The reason I ask is someone who writes a Space Invader clone will
obviously have an easier time of it than if someone writes a complex
side-scroller or FPS action adventure. I can see newbies offering up
games like Simon, BopIt, Space Invaders, while others might take on
something more technical. How are you going to judge games in a case
like that?

Cheers!

On 12/27/11, Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com wrote:
 Hi guys,

I've been thinking about the duration of the competition as well as the time
it might potentially take for new people to familiarize themselves with the
engine, and have come up with the following.

What about having the competition last for 2 months, starting on February
first? This would mean that those who wanted to learn more about the engine
had plenty of time to do so before the contest begins, and that those who
are less familiar with programming in general would have a bit longer to
complete the task. But when it comes down to it, the competition probably is
not suitable for those who know nothing about either BGT or programming in
general. But there's not much I can do about that. This is just one way in
which I want to, A, encourage the use of the BGT engine by a greater number
of people and, B, get some exciting new games published.

Let me know what you think of these suggestions.

 Kind regards,

 Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] Suggestion about the list

2011-12-28 Thread dark

Hi tom.

while I do certainly agree that there are plenty of people who just don't
take the time to look things up, indeed I get a trifle exasperated
sometimes when someone will ask a question about a game which is answered in
it's documentation, or asks about something which could be found on
audigoames.net or pcsgames I do think there is another point at least where
things like footer information are concerned.

Your phrase in plane sight actually said it very correctly.

The point of having footers, banner adds on web pages, info in margins etc
is that people who are visually skim reading the page will absorb some of
the information as they read the main text.

this is afterall the poin behind most advertizing, not that people actually
pay attention to it, just that it is there on one side so that people will
have it in mind when shopping.

that however is not true for someone using a screen reader, sinse obviously
there you go as quickly as possible to the information you want, indeed I
rarely if ever know what adds on webpages or constant footer info on
messages says, sinse I always endeaver to skip past it or not bother reading
it.

While hell for navigation (especially on pages that are ful of adds), this
is good for avoiding seeing them generally.

this does mean though that information needs to be in a place that people
will actually pay attention to looking, such as a welcome message or a page
which they will at least hopefully take the time to read.

Re: [Audyssey] Facing the empire.

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,

Yeah, go ahead and send it. I'll certainly take a look at it. As for
porting it that would depend on how complex the game is and what sort
of features you might be looking for here in the port.

For example, do you want SAPI support, direct screen reader support,
onscreen text, etc? Do you want a full blown Windows application
complete with its own Window buttons and controls, or do you want a
Windows console application that runs in a Command Prompt Window that
is similar to the original, but built for modern versions of Windows?
Do you want sounds and music?

If you can give me an idea of what you want me to do with the game,
how you want me to port it, I'll be in a better position to give you a
direct answer. However, in the meantime go ahead and send the Dos game

No, I don't remember the game, but it sounds cool. If it is a Dos

Re: [Audyssey] Suggestion about the list

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Right. That is all perfectly understandable and you are absolutely
correct about the difference between how a sighted and a blind user
gathers information in an e-mail or on a website. Which does present a
problem of where to put the information so that it is likely to get
noticed since as you say all the convensional places like in the
footer of an e-mail post doesn't work because most blind users with a
screen reader are likely to skip it.

Sure I am willing to edit the default welcome message info, but I do
not think that in of itself is enough. I think that this information
should go somewhere on our home page as Audyssey is one of the main
resources for accessible gaming, but the website itself doesn't hold
much information on the topic. Instead, it has been used as a simple
page to direct people to the list which I think should change. While
we don't need to necessarily become another Audiogames.net we should
at least mention the site and have quick links to important content
for first time new comers. Things like the 7128 Top 25 websites is a
great resource for new accessible gamers and we should mirror that
list on Audyssey somewhere. Having this information right on our site
might cut down on the where do I go to get x type questions because
it will be in a logical place to look.

Cheers!

audigoames.net or pcsgames I do think there is another point at least where
things like footer information are concerned.

Hi Jim,

No, Flight Gear wasn't written in Basic. I believe the engine for
Flight Gear is written in C which makes sense given that this is a
real time simulator, and in a case like that you want the added speed
and performance a language like C could offer. Plus Flight Gear is
multiplatform and uses a lot of open source APIs like OpenGL for 3d
graphics. However, that isn't to say someone couldn't get the jist of
how the engine works and rewrite it in another language of choice.

For instance, I might rewrite it in C# .NET and use all standard
Windows UI controls to make the menus etc all accessible. Thanks to
SlimDX I would have access to Direct3D, XAudio2, SAPI, and
DirectInput. In other words I could read the original source, see how
it works, and clone it in a language better suited for a blind
friendly simulator if I were so inclined.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Airic the cleric question

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

No, whatever he did with Airic the Cleric he definitely did something
wrong as its dificult to get the game to run on a number of computers.
Even brand new computers.

For instance, I have an older Compaq with a 3.6 GHZ Processor with 1
GB of ram and Windows 7. Ok, according to the system requirements the
game should work. Guess again. I try and play it and it frequently
locks up. I'm guessing not enough memory because it requires a huge
amount of memory to run and since Win 7 is also a memory hog there
probably isn't enough for both.

Alright so back in October I purchased a new 64-bit Toshiba with a
duel core 1.66 GHZ processor, Windows 7 64-bit, 3 GB of ram, and
because it is a duel core system I figured it should be fast enough
and have enough memory to play Airic. Nope. I get as far as the intro
where Airic wakes up and it locks up and crashes. I have a desktop PC
I recently fixed with an Intel Pentium 2.8 GHZ processor, 2 GB of ram,
running Windows XP. It won't run on that system either because the
game won't run on XP. That's three systems that should handle any
decent audio game, but Airic won't run on either of them. Its a poorly
designed game as far as I am personally concerned. If we were handing
out ratings I'd give it a 1 out of 5 stars just because of the lack of
stability and poor performance.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-28 Thread Scott Chesworth
Whether there'd be enough interest (or indeed time in Philip's
schedule) to justify such a framework is debatable, but how about
this.

People vote by rating games out of 10 on different aspects, as in a
score of 10 is this is killer, a score of 5 is it ticks the boxes
and a score of 1 is meh, not so much. A few categories that would
apply across the board to most genre of games I can think of would be
originality, replayability, sound design, stability (you'd need a
catchier title for that one), and perhaps round it off with a very
generalised overall, how awesome is this game question. That way,
the categories combine to make it fairer. A Bop IT clone might recieve
low marks from most people for originality, but there's room for an
inovative genius to step up to the mark with a Bop IT clone that turns
out to be totally addictive and they'll get the credit they deserve
for replayability. Similarly, games that are great can shine even with
bad sound design, or awesome sound design can still stand out as what
it is even if the gaming experience ends up being a bit drab. I
suggested the overall awesomeness category because, for me at least,
there have been games I've loved or gone back to time and again but I
can't always explain why.

It'd be a balancing act, but with the scores being made public, I
think there could be a fair system here.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Scott,

Those are some good suggestions. If I were to create a modern clone of
Asteroids I wouldn't expect it to rank high in originality since the
game has been around in one form or another since the late 70's. On
the other hand good music, game play, replay value, and extra features
that were not in the classic 1979 Atari version might all rank it high
among voters. So I agree we probably can settle the genre and format
question by putting together some criteria that spans all of them by
voting on creativity, audio quality, replay value, originality, and
personal like/dislike. I suggest a scale from 1 to 5 which seems to be
a standard for polls like this.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Airic the cleric question

2011-12-28 Thread dark

Hi tom.

The compatibility issues with Airik I've always found confusing.

The old beta demo worked fine, and I don't recall anyone having trouble
running it including myself. What is more, on xp it is not that the game
gives an error, fails to load, fails to play sounds or runs slowly, it's
that one command, the find command doesn't work, which seems an incredibly
strange consequence of a compatibility issue.

From comments Jake has made on audiogmaes.net, he essentially designed a
graphical game with the engine and maps, but used a sound model rather than
tying the spacial objects of the game to actual images and collision boxes
on screen.

I believe he thought all audio games were programmed essentially as a boppit
style play sound react model, without in built logic or a virtual
environment at the back, so used a graphical model, though I'm not sure how
successful this has been.

We'll have to see how his new game works out.

Beware the grue!

Cheers!

That's a good idea, though I stil think the welcome message needs to be done

Hopefully betwene some sort of intro webpage and a welcome message people

Hi Dark,

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-28 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Scott,

This is exactly what I had planned on doing, though perhaps I wasn't clear
enough in my original post. Here's a short quote:

The public would then vote on a few aspects of each game such as sound
quality, stability, playability, innovation, etc. All of these scores would
be added up to form the final score for each game, and the one with the
highest over-all score would win. The contestants would of course be able to
vote as well, on anything other than their own creation.

I haven't decided on the exact criteria yet, but certainly the ones listed
above plus perhaps one or two more.

Kind regards,

[Audyssey] the voice controlled blackjack games

2011-12-28 Thread Allen
Hi, Gamers,

Just a quick review of the two Blackjack games for the iPhone. I've tried both
and they are alot alike except for the voices. Both games are very responsive
to specific voice commands, though you do have to wait to talk until the dealer
has stopped talking. The sounds were very good and the humor was entertaining.
The only thing I did not like with both games, which is just a personal
opinion, is that after 2 or 3 rounds of being told which cards I had been
dealt, the dealer stopped explaining what each voice command does, which was OK
because it sped up the game play a little, but the dealer stopped saying which
cards I had been dealt. He or she would just say for example, You were dealt
a total of 18. Say hit or stay. I would have liked it better if I had been
told the card or cards I had been dealt which would have made it feel more like
sitting at an actual Blackjack table.
Other than that, they are fun and well-done games.

Sincerely,
Allen

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-28 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Chris,

To answer your questions in order:

1. As you might have guessed, the main reason for limiting certain features
to specific license types of the engine is to provide people with an
insentive to upgrade. If I just gave everything away in the demo, the
commercial versions would offer very little in terms of advantages other
than compiling and, in the case of pro, selling games. It works rather well
when people are buying the engine normally, but in the case of this
competition I can see how it might present a problem if you want to exploit
a certain feature to make the game stand out. Still, I'm not sure how I
could rectify that without compromising the security of my regular licenses.
There was a suggestion earlier in the discussion about making a timed
competition specific license, but the problem there was that a timed trial
is relatively easy to bypass and once that has been done, my sales are
toast. Have you any other suggestions?

2. Luckily for me, I don't actually have to define what innovation means
technically. Instead I set up a poll once all the games have been published,
and let the public vote on each one of these aspects of a game on a scale of
either 1 to 5 or 1 to 10. That way I merely have to decide on a set of good
criteria, and then let the forces of mankind do the rest. Convenient! Grins.

Philip Bennefall

Hey, Allen.
There is something you might have not realize about the games, and that
is you can change the voice for the dealer on both games.
What you got to do is go to options and then under the word dealer
select which voice you want to use.

I personally like using Gino voice.

[Audyssey] ScreenReaderAPI.dll Supernova support patch

2011-12-28 Thread QuentinC

Hello everybody,

I have added supernova support in my ScreenReaderAPI.dll. In
consequence, all applications using it can now speak through that screen
reader.

It works of course for the playroom, but also for greenies. Jean-Luc is
also using my API in his latest SoundRTS, so you can also patch SoundRTS.

Download at http://vrac.quentinc.net/supernova-patch.zip
Just go in the game folder and replace ScreenReaderAPI.dll with the new
one, and don't forget dolapi.dll.

Tested on a XP VM with latest supernova 12.6, 30 days demo.

Have fun !

[Audyssey] adventure sr help please

2011-12-28 Thread Allen
How do you get started in this game? I hear a recorded voice say, Welcome to
Adventure SR. Would you like instructions? I get the same four buttons no
matter if I say yes or no. If I say nothing and just try swiping left or right
with VoiceOver still on, all I see are the same four buttons of Record, Send,
Console, and Map. Nothing seems to happen if I double tap Send or Console.
Double tapping Map apparently just displays a visual map, and double tapping
Record just kills VoiceOver. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Sincerely,
Allen

Since you have to set some form of deadline, it really would be

But maybe you could do more than one such competition? Then everyone who

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - Types of Games

2011-12-28 Thread Loravara
Good Afternoon,

The possible BGT competition has me thinking, and I have two very general
questions.

First, can BGT be used to design any type of game? For instance, card game
to aircraft simulator? If not, what limitations should I be aware of? (I
intend to do more research this weekend, but I wanted a general assessment
of the tool's capabilities.)

And second, what types of games would you like to see? Before you answer,
let me tell you a bit about me and my constraints. I am highly unlikely to
build a first-person shooter, or any standard arcade style game. There are
likely others who know far more about designing such games than I do. What
I bring to the table is extensive knowledge of board and card games, as well
as role-playing games. It seems likely that for a competition I'd start
with something like a board or card game, because these are somewhat more
static, while a role-playing game would be very dynamic. Are there
particular board or card games you'd love to play, games that are not
represented at all in the blindness community at the moment? For instance,
I used to love playing Risk, and I've never seen an accessible Risk game.
Similarly, there are tons of unusual games published every year, from
Carcassonne to Ticket to Ride, Dominion to Qwarriors. If you don't know of
a specific game you'd like to see, is there a type of game that might
interest you: a dice game, kingdom building game, card game, etc.?

And with all that in mind, will BGT allow me to design games that can be
played over the Internet, so that players can play against one another, or
should I aim for a game where you play against the computer?

Many thanks for any input you can offer.

Nancy

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - Types of Games

2011-12-28 Thread Philip Bennefall

Good afternoon there,

BGT can definitely be used to design any type of game. BGT is basically a
set of modules (I guess you could call them), all wrapped into a scripting
engine that allows you to use everything from sounds to timers to networking
to text-to-speech to artificial intelligence and lots more, in a very high
level language. The language itself, AngelScript, is very similar in syntax
to languages such as C++ but takes some of the low level work out of your
hands. For instance, you don't have to manage memory or clean up any
resources that you may use. In other words, BGT is a framework that you can
use to build pretty much any game imagineable.

As for the types of games that are prefered in the competition, there are no
specific requirements. I personally am not the one who decides what game is
the best, I leave that up to a public vote. After the deadline, all the
games will be made available for the public to test, and then they can vote
on a few separate aspects of each game such as innovation, sound quality,
replay value, and a few others. Therefore, whether I personally do or do not
like a particular genre is of no consequence; it all comes down to what the
community enjoys. But to speak for myself as a gamer, I certainly wouldn't
mind testing out a new board game if it was made available to me.

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: Eamon Deluxe Update-12-27-2011

2011-12-28 Thread Michael Gauler

Hi thomas,
I have a very important question about this topic.
I'll use JAWS as an example here, because I am not sure what other screen
readers do.
You said that any program which uses the Windows API is theoretically
readable with a screen reader because the program broadcasts some
information through the API which the screen reader can optain.
But of course programmers can allways do without the main API of any given
operating system. This might cause confusion for a screen reader as you
said.

But now there is my question.
A screen reader should be able to read most of the information currently on
screen, at least in theory.
When JAWS is first installed on a PC, a program wants to install Video
Intercept which adds a virtual? secondary graphics card into the control
panel.
Video Intercept should be able to get all information from the real
graphics card to the screen reader.
Even if a program doesn't use non Windows API controls, it should be
possible to find non standard controls and recognice them via Video
Intercept.
Even if controls are different, the basic principles still apply: selecting
entries from various lists, radio buttons checkboxes or any and all forms of
fields to enter any form of text...
So, the question is why do create a secondary Graphics card (probably a
virtual one) when most information gained from it seems to be unused all the
time, or does JAWS (or any other screen reader) need an update to the list
of standard controls it knows?
There are so many forms of editable fields in forms or other programs where
you can enter text, but you have to tell your screen reader manually that it
is an edit (in JAWS via your the configuration Manager).
I know that the list of known controls can be seen via the Insert+7 key
combination, but as far as I can remember (my first long term contact with
JAWS was before JAWS 4.0), this list has not seen many changes since that
time, and it can't be good this way...

Hi Dark,

erm, is it possible you mixed up something here? *smiles*

I know that there were some people who asked where the game can be found,
but my original question was about the game itself. And I got an answer
from Bryan now, but it came after your complaint about the game that
doesn't exist for you. *lol*

And it's not that I can't understand your frustration, I just didn't want
to stray so far from my original question.

Best regards
Sarah

2011-12-28 Thread dark
I'm not as technically up on this as I might be, but I'm fairly sure Hal
does things rather differently sinse there's never any need to tell! hal
somewhere is a text entry area or anything similar, you just wander around
with the dolphin curser.

if it's got recognizeable controls on screen Hal will tell you and you'll
get the area dolphin curser, ie, a curser which goes in windows areas like
webpages, but if not, you can stil play with the text which hal will do it's
best to present to you as reasonably as possible in lines and columns.

this is why a game like smugglers which uses textual, but none standard
controls was fine with hal.

Hi thomas,
I have a very important question about this topic.

A screen reader should be able to read most of the information currently
on screen, at least in theory.
When JAWS is first installed on a PC, a program wants to install Video
Intercept which adds a virtual? secondary graphics card into the
control panel.
Video Intercept should be able to get all information from the real
graphics card to the screen reader.
Even if a program doesn't use non Windows API controls, it should be
possible to find non standard controls and recognice them via Video
Intercept.
Even if controls are different, the basic principles still apply:
selecting entries from various lists, radio buttons checkboxes or any and
all forms of fields to enter any form of text...
So, the question is why do create a secondary Graphics card (probably a
virtual one) when most information gained from it seems to be unused all
the time, or does JAWS (or any other screen reader) need an update to the
list of standard controls it knows?
There are so many forms of editable fields in forms or other programs
where you can enter text, but you have to tell your screen reader manually
that it is an edit (in JAWS via your the configuration Manager).
I know that the list of known controls can be seen via the Insert+7 key
combination, but as far as I can remember (my first long term contact with
JAWS was before JAWS 4.0), this list has not seen many changes since that
time, and it can't be good this way...

Cheers!

However, in the meantime go ahead and send the Dos game
and I'll take a look at it.

Cheers!

However, the game works fine on my desktop. It seems to be only my laptop that
