Re: [Audyssey] Chillingham sequel.

2012-01-20 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

This is in effect what I've done, if you check the pages for Gg and
chillingham on audiogames.net you'll notice that their status has been
changed to unknown and there are warnings that people do not attempt to
order their games.

I sent a mail to bavisoft threatening I'd do this unless they sorted their
act out, but as usual got absolutely no reasponse, indeed the last time
we heard from them was in august 2009 when yes, they just said don't
destribute our games and nothing else.

Shaun,

Actually, we've already reached the point where the games won't run.
I've tried them on a Windows 7 64-bit machine and when I try to start
the Bavisoft games I get a runtime error and they crash. I don't know
about others experiences, but the fact of the matter is they've
reached the point where they are out of date with little to know hope
of them being upgraded by the developer.

As for how to handle Bavisoft they haven't done anything that would
get them banned from the audio games forum or Audyssey list, but we
can warn new gamers not to buy their products based on customer
experience. If Bavisoft doesn't like the negative feedback they can
either correct their behavior or close their doors. We don't have to
advertise their products and recommend them when they clearly have no
desire to support their products.

They have not updated their website since 2004, so unless they renew
their copywrites each year they may as well be dead.
Not like we havn't tried to go legal, I have seen blatent threads
with communication messages asking for a responce on status.
Their site went down got infected with malware, but then was put back
up in its origional form.
Its like they are dead but still want to exist like some sort of ghost.
At any rate I don't know why people would bother actually getting the
games legally or otherwise.
I didn't buy them, but then I played them once or twice on a friend's
pc and to be honest technology has moved on.
Eventually they probably won't run.
I do also wish that they would respond.
If they quit, fine, we can download their games, we are already doing
it and they don't seem to care as a company if you can honestly call
them that.
Or they come back.
I have no real idea what we can do, but if they do come back unless
they give proper explanations, I wander if we can just bann them or
something, I mean its like they think they can just lose orders and
things and not respond.
We have patiently waited for ages, we have asked them nicely several
times, its not like we havn't tried.

Re: [Audyssey] Multiple playable characters

2012-01-20 Thread dark

Hi tom.

That is true to a point, but I certainly have seen several examples of games
where there is a single main character, but multiple other options.

Even if you discount marrio brothers 2, (afterall technically both the
brothers are the main characters of the series), what about the Mega man x
series?

X is the main character and much of the plot is about him, however as Zero
got more popular people begged for the chance to play as him, which they got
to do in a limited sort of special assist way in Mega man x 3, and in a
complete sense in each game after that, indeed in Mega man x 7 Capcom
introduced Axl as a third playable character (the fact I think axl is
completely dull and uninteresting doesn't change the fact he's there).

Then look at the Donkey Kong country series. In each game you play two
characters together, however tey are not always the same two even though the
big ape has his name on the title.

In Dkc1 you play Donkey and his little buddy diddy. In two however, Donkey
is captured and you have Diddy and his Girlfriend dixy. Then in the third
game both! Donkey and diddy are captured and it's Dixy with Kiddy kong,
a large baby ape she is baby sitting at the time.

This isn't to say you should! put other characters into Tomb hunter, only
that just because you have one main character and a story revolving around
them, multiple characters are not impossible depending upon how you want the
plot and gameplay to go.

Samas Aran in the Metroid games is an absolute Loner, indeed in Metroid
fusion she only took a computer as commanding officer on her mission under
protest. It's very difficult to imagine Samus teaming up with anyone at
all, one reason why the game Metroid Prime Hunter has been rather
disliked by several people, simply because it broke a games character for
seemingly no good reason other than nintendo wanted to turn metroid prime
into a more standard multiplayer fps.

I sort of imagine Angela the same way as Samas, so it deffinately wouldn't
be unreasonable to say that multiple characters are out, just pointing
out though that even in a one character series, you can always slot in
extras.

indeed, I think a game like SSuperliam, Q9 or shades of doom could support
multiple characters very well, sinse there the main characters aren't
explicitely said to be loner types.

Hi,

To me the ability to play or select different playable characters is
dependent on the story more than anything else.

For example, if we had a Star Trek FPS game you might want to play
that game from the perspective of different characters. Each would
have extra features or abilities that would be unique. In a TNG game
Data might be faster and be able to exist in hazardous environments
that would normally kill a human being without requiring a hazard
suit. La Forge has his visor that allows him to see things that can't
be seen with the human eye that could be handy in certain situations.
Warf would have superior strength, stamina, and hand to hand combat
skills that would make him a great fighter in combat situations.
Playing a game from those different perspectives could be interesting.

With Tomb Hunter the game is about a single character. No one else can
fill her roll. In order to add more playable characters I'd have to
invent them for that purpose, and then the plot has to be rewritten to
tie them into the game. I'd personally not want to do that.

2012-01-20 Thread dark
Well it's an interesting genre and setting for games, and could fit either
an action or stratogy game fairly well.

One game I remember on the old Amstrad computer which would make a very nice
audio convertion was a game called Kane.

You were a desperado riding into the town of cane attempting to rob a bank.
The first stage was you out in the desert, trying to get some provisions for
lunch by targiting and shooting chickens with a bow and arrow duck hunt
style, accept that as well as your moving horrizontal and vertical
targit you also ran around the bottom of the screen so the arrow fired
upwards, making the mechanics quite different.

Then, you rode your horse to cane and had to jump fences and cacti, arcade
style.

Then, you got the shoot out, which was similar to bow and arrow accept that
the marshal's men defending the bank fired back if you were too slow.

Finally, you were trying to catch up to the train out of town, which was
another horse riding stage, accept that as well as jumping over stuff you
had to keep up with the on going train.

I think Jim or someone could create an awsome homer like game along those
lines fairly easily, and it's a fun setting to play around in.

HI,

Just wanted to mention that a few have reported that when they startr the
game, they are on channel 20. So if anyone starts and don't hear any

Thanks for the changes. Especially the adjustment for footsteps.

On audiogames.net, on the Swamp thread, I've posted a new testing client.
You'll still need the one you have for the sounds and other files, but I've
posted a new executable and map files which were changed.

If zombies get to enter the truck, they should start destroying the items that
are loaded. I think they should also be able to damage or destroy the truck. If
truck is destroyed, mission fail.

As for the latest change, I do agree that high health should be able to defend
our weapons better, but if it only breaks below 75% I'm not sure if it is a bit
low. If a player is careful enough not be surrounded and heal up everytime when
health is below 80%, there is little chance for the zombies. My suggestion is
to make it 85 or 90%. The player with best armers may be able to sustain 2 or 3
hits before zombies have a chance to break their weapons. They would have to
decide whether to use up more med kits or risking their weapons.

Re: [Audyssey] Wild west games was

2012-01-20 Thread Jim Kitchen

Bavisoft
Hi Dark,

You know I have never really cared for human speech in games. I really do
prefer the sapi5 speech. You know other than the little bits of human speech
like Homer saying Woo hoo, Doh etc. And I really do not care for the heavy
western accent. I do very much like shows such as Bonanza, Big Valley, Gun
Smoke, Rifleman etc, but they do not have that heavy western accent like that.
But, so, if a western game such as you suggested would work with sapi5 speech...

- Original Message -
Well it's an interesting genre and setting for games, and could fit either
an action or stratogy game fairly well.

Beware the gRue!

I think it will be similar to Oregon Trail, a text and sound turn based game

[Audyssey] personal opinion of bavisoft

2012-01-20 Thread Charles Rivard
This is strictly a personal opinion. Given the number of games that Bavisoft
has produced over the years, and taking into consideration how well informed we
have been kept concerning their current production, I think we should show them
the same consideration and support that they have shown us. Forget them until
they have something to show.

Re: [Audyssey] Wild west games was

2012-01-20 Thread dark

Hi jim.

Well you could always explain the plot and circumstances with written text
in sapi, then have just a couple of yeeehaaaww, type quotes in the game
itself, western is the setting not just the accent afterall.

I must admit I'm less keen on actual in character speech being done in sapi,
that is speech that is supposed to come from a human.

An example of this in one of your gamesJim might be the quotes from crew and
merchants in starmule, which imho would be better if recorded.

I know though this isn't always easy what with getting voice actors etc, and
certainly no game that uses synth speech where imho it should use a human
has ever utterly put me off playing it, it's just a preference.

Hi Dark,

You know I have never really cared for human speech in games. I really do
prefer the sapi5 speech. You know other than the little bits of human
speech like Homer saying Woo hoo, Doh etc. And I really do not care for
the heavy western accent. I do very much like shows such as Bonanza, Big
Valley, Gun Smoke, Rifleman etc, but they do not have that heavy western
accent like that. But, so, if a western game such as you suggested would
work with sapi5 speech...

One game I remember on the old Amstrad computer which would make a very
nice audio convertion was a game called Kane.

You were a desperado riding into the town of cane attempting to rob a
bank. The first stage was you out in the desert, trying to get some
provisions for lunch by targiting and shooting chickens with a bow and
arrow duck hunt style, accept that as well as your moving horrizontal
and vertical targit you also ran around the bottom of the screen so the
arrow fired upwards, making the mechanics quite different.

Then, you rode your horse to cane and had to jump fences and cacti, arcade
style.

Then, you got the shoot out, which was similar to bow and arrow accept
that the marshal's men defending the bank fired back if you were too slow.

Finally, you were trying to catch up to the train out of town, which was
another horse riding stage, accept that as well as jumping over stuff you
had to keep up with the on going train.

I think Jim or someone could create an awsome homer like game along those
lines fairly easily, and it's a fun setting to play around in.

I think it will be similar to Oregon Trail, a text and sound turn based

No information on when it will be done.

Actually med kits are not really valuable. There are plenty on the map. Even
if the break point is at 90%, I believe I will still heal. 75% won't really
change how i play but 90% might. I usually donate most of my med kits and my
field kit before i go out on the run. I am pretty sure i will find before my
health drops below 75%.
One thing i noticed in 1.9 test1 is when in a mission is zombies never break
any of my armer before. they only broke my weapons.

This is strictly a personal opinion. Given the number of games that
Bavisoft has produced over the years, and taking into consideration how
well informed we have been kept concerning their current production, I
think we should show them the same consideration and support that they
have shown us. Forget them until they have something to show.

2012-01-20 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Good point Steady. I'm writing this down so I don't forget it for later.

Hi Jeremy, I haven't get to testand
compile the list of items that will crash the game yet. Will
 try to do it soon.
A couple of things I hope you will consider adding to your
already very long list of things to do.
send a message and maybe also an alert tone to every1 on
the map when someone leads a mission. And also to the person
who logon to the server when there is mission awaiting
 people to join.
If zombies get to enter the truck, they should start
destroying the items that are loaded. I think they should
also be able to damage or destroy the truck. If truck is
 destroyed, mission fail.

As for the latest change, I do agree that high health
should be able to defend our weapons better, but if it only
breaks below 75% I'm not sure if it is a bit low. If a
player is careful enough not be surrounded and heal up
everytime when health is below 80%, there is little chance
for the zombies. My suggestion is to make it 85 or 90%. The
player with best armers may be able to sustain 2 or 3 hits
before zombies have a chance to break their weapons. They
would have to decide whether to use up more med kits or
 risking their weapons.

Actually Dallas I did it that way on purpose. I wanted people to have to
decide between 2 main crate collecting strategies. The slower method is to
head back to the truck each time you find a new one, where you spend more time
traveling back and forth, but you aren't risking the crates. The faster method
is a bit more risky. Instead of dropping off crates you just keep looking for
them until you have a bunch. This doesn't waste time traveling back and forth
to the truck, but also means you are risking the several you're carrying. If
you should happen to die, your team loses those undelivered crates!

HI,

You mean that you can pick up more than 1 crate at a time? I didn't know
that. I thought it was limited to 1 crate. That would have been nice to know
on a mission where I was the only 1 left with 8 crates to go.

And, also to be clear. Is there only 1 crate in the warehouse at any given
time?

So let's say I pick up a crate. Is another crate spawned somewhere else
randomly at that time?

Love the missions and just want to make sure I understand them as best as
possible.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Audyssey] swamp mission suggestions

2012-01-20 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Correct Richard. When you pick up a crate another will randomly appear
somewhere within the warehouse. You aren't limited to how many you can hold,
so some players will gather up a few before making the trip back to the truck
to drop them off. There will only ever be 1 crate in the warehouse at any
given time.

It has confused a few people when they realized they could gather up more
crates than the mission is even for. This was done intentionally since dying
means the crates you're carrying will be destroyed. In a mission where you
only need 10 crates, you could have 6 people on your team all carrying 5
crates! That's 3 times as many as you actually need, but it was done this way
in case some of your team mates are killed before returning to the truck. This
does mean that a single person could wander around collecting 30 or 40 crates
if they wished, but it won't give them anything extra if they do.

 HI,

You mean that you can pick up more than 1 crate at a time?

[Audyssey] most epic soul calibur trailer yet!

2012-01-20 Thread Clement Chou
I couldn't remember the link for the English version, but here's a new trailer
for Soul Calibur 5... which supposedly shows off parts of story mode. If that's
true, this game's story mode will be the closest thing to an action adventure
game's presentation I have ever heard. If I didn't know this was a fighting
game that's exactly what I would've assumed. I'll do my best to translate,
though if someone finds the English version of this vid, the dialog may be
different.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjsRZlt9oAo
The lines wil be in order, but I don't know who's saying what, so here we go...
sis!
You are worthy to wield Soul Calibur...
Never heard of it.
It is the spirit sword which was destined to stop the catastrophy brought on by
the demonoic blade known as Soul Edge.
Welcome back... I missed you.
You dare to stand in my way?
You mean the azure knight who wielded soul edge? That's just a fairytale to
keep idiots from going after it...
Wh--what's that?
Is that the true soul edge?
Fate has already decided my victory... as it has decided your defeat.
I have to do something!
This was all your fault... you kidnapped my sister and destroyed our family!
Hmm... things just got slightly more interesting.
You bastard!
Patroclos Alexander... if you wish to stay here, you must make a vow to battle
and destroy nightmare.

Re: [Audyssey] Multiple playable characters

2012-01-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

I see what you are saying, and I guess what I was trying to point out
that some games are just character specific. For example, Tomb Raider
is and always has been about Lara Croft's personal story. When Edos
Interactive added a male playable character in Angel of Darkness it
did not go over very well with the fans. Most people, yours truly
included, wanted to play the game as Lara Croft as usual not as
someone else.

With something like Shades of Doom the main character isn't even named
and that game is open enough to add more than one character. David
Greenwood could change the story so that instead of one person
entering the lab perhaps its a highly trained team of special forces
types. He could design multiple characters for that roll, and whoever
you decide to play ends up getting trapped and has to find his/her way
out of the lab. Given this revised storyline you still get the
first-person action, but a choice of character rolls to play.

Basically, weather a game has multiple characters or not depends on
the game in question. Some games are not so character specific that
other characters and rolls can be added. Others like Tomb Raider are
lone wolf types where it is very character specific, and adding
additional playable characters detracts from the game instead of
enhancing it. A good developer will know when is and is not a good
time to add multiple characters.

Cheers!

On 1/20/12, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Ok. Considering that I'll probably be able to grab up all the various
guns pretty soon, I'll review the rifles, then the pistols, then
accessories and attachments as I can. The first review I have will
probably actually be on basic gameplay with no tech data beyond the
basics needed to play with any gun and setup. It'll be basically a
learn game sounds style review with game objective and mechanics
laid out as neatly as possible.

Turns out, guys, that I was wrong about the Phoenix LTX. Hasbro
released it as the Phoenix, then Nerf, which is a subdivision of
Hasbro, took it over and resold it without the neat accessories as
something else, something along the lines of the Nerf Two-player
battle system, but then they discontinued it. In short, if you want
one of these, get it second-hand.

Also, if you search for laser tag, you'll find a lot of stuff. Most of
 it sucks. Don't buy it.
Essentially, stick with Light Strike. Yeah, it may not be the very
best ever made, but it's really pretty good, and it's got a lot of
roleplay value too. I'll point that out when I get the podcasts done,
as I don't really feel like bugging my wife into making the youtube
 video look decent.

That brings me to another point. Unless I get strangely lucky and I
can get ahold of a pistol early, it'll be at least April before I have
all three rifles and all three pistols. Right now, I have all three
rifles, and I could review them, but I want to know what you guys
 want.

Either I can do an individual podcast on each specific piece of
equipment, as well as a sort of introductory podcast to the game, or I
could just do a podcast on the game, then a podcast on the rifles,
then a podcast on the pistols, then the rifle accessories as they
 arrive, and so forth.
the advantage to the podcasts being on each piece of equipment is that
you could jump to the piece of equipment that you have, or whatever
you are considering purchasing. If I do it combined, I'll probably be
more brief since there's more to cover, and it'll be a little easier
to take it in all at once, but there's still the haphazard nature of
the thing, doing the podcasts as the new stuff arrives.

Finally, I could just wait until I have everything, including vests
and the I.T.S., a turret device, and then release it all at once as
either one huge podcast or as a huge project of them. The thing is,
it'll probably be at least June before that happens. Good, because
people will be more likely to be able to go outside in comfortable
clothes to play. Bad, because you guys may not like the idea of
 waiting.

Please get back to me on what you all prefer.

Either way, I'll try for conciseness, if you guys want, or I can just

Either way, I want to give you guys as much info as I can. As I said

Re: [Audyssey] personal opinion of bavisoft

2012-01-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

That's always very possible. However, if that is the case all the
Bavisoft developer/developers would have to do is send a message to
the forum or Audyssey List saying we've now got a full time job and
don't have the time to continue audio game development. That would be
the end of the mystery and we'd know exactly where they stand.

Justin from BSC Games sent a message to the BSC Games list and
Audyssey stating he was now working 50 hours a week with a full time
programming job and everyone understood. Dan sent a message to
Audyssey stating that he was hired by a college to be a programmer and
that he no longer had the time to put into DanZ Games. Liam let all of
his customers know about his employment status as well. As long as
someone lets the community know people are willing to understand. its
the people like Bavisoft who go years without so much as a hello or
goodbye that gets people upset.

2012-01-20 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

Yes, PCS Games, BSC games and L-works have let us know what is going on and at
least kept up with tech support and communicating with gamers. And of course
Phil has taken up game programming and great web design.

I can't wait until 12 20 20 12.

Hi Charles,

That's pretty much my feelings in a nutshell as well. It would be
different if they sent out a news letter saying what was happening
with their future titles, or if they gave us a message that they can
not continue for reason x. However, remaining silent, not answering
their e-mails, not providing answers to support questions, and so on
doesn't leave us to think much about their customer service.

On 1/20/12, Charles Rivard wee1s...@fidnet.com wrote:

This is strictly a personal opinion. Given the number of games that
Bavisoft has produced over the years, and taking into consideration how
well

informed we have been kept concerning their current production, I think we
should show them the same consideration and support that they have shown
us.

Forget them until they have something to show.

Hi,

That would make sense, but why not tell the community. Why stall, not
answer e-mails, and basically leave everyone in the dark?

Hi Nicole,

What has happened to many blind game companies such as PCS games, BSC
games, L-works etc is that the programmer ended up getting a job doing
business programming for some main stream company, and thus doesn't have
the time to do the creating blind games thing. I am pretty darn sure
that, that is what has happened to bavisoft.

[Audyssey] Your Opinion on Game Development Documentation

2012-01-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,

I've started working on the USA Games developers website
http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com
and before I really get started on the language tutorials and things
like that I'd like to get an idea of what you guys want me to do
first. We've got a lot of different programming languages to cover
such as Python, Java, as well as C# .NET, VB .NET, AND C++. I'm able
to write and provide documentation for any and all, but it might help
if I get an idea from you where you'd like me to begin.

While Python is definitely easy enough for beginners I think there is
already enough free documentation available on python.org and through
the PyGame documentation that there are already enough beginner
resources to get people started. All I'd have to do is perhaps link to
them and my job is done unless you want me to attempt to write
something that goes into more depth.

Java is also doable and good free documentation is sometimes hard to
come by. While there are free language tutorials like Thinking in Java
is a great intro to the language the authors fail to write from an
accessibility standpoint. I think Java could use some documentation
written from a blind programmers perspective where SWT is the graphics
API is used as the toolkit rather than Swing.

Plus I've looked at JInput and Joal and while the APIs are decent
enough for game programming the documentation isn't in a form for a
beginner. I think this needs some tutorials aimed at a new Java game
developer. What do you think?

Finally, there is C# .NET and Visual Basic .NET. There is a lot of
good commercial documentation for these languages, but not a lot of
free documentation. While there are good resources on the languages
I've found documentation on things like SlimDX very thin. Often the
SlimDX developers point you to the Microsoft DirectX documentation
that is geared for a C++ developer. Clearly this isn't going to work
if you don't already know C++ and can translate the code examples into
C# .NET or VB .NET in your head.

Since I know C# .NET very well, and have been working on building a
game engine for .NET languages I think that this might actually be the
best place to start. I'd even be willing to release a public version
of G3D.dll for .NET developers to help ease people's transition to C#
.NET or VB .NET. Any thoughts on this?

Cheers!
